Artist: Gross Reality Title: Overthrow Genre: Melodic Thrash Metal / Prog Metal Release Date: 6th May 2014 Label: Divebomb Records Just the other day I asked an audience that is mostly well-disposed towards me for new music to review and a few bands reacted. The one band I had to review right away is GROSS REALITY from Raleigh, North Carolina. GROSS REALITY was formed in 1991, the first part of their musical journey only lasted from 1991 to 1996. However, the band did not record a single bit of music at the time of their demise. The band came together again in 2009 (perfectly timed for a new generation of thrash was on the rise). They gained exposure again, played alongside icons such as DEATH ANGEL, EVILE and others and started to work on new material. This record here saw the light of day in 2014. ‘Overthrow’ is a steel-clad fist punching your face in, this beast of a record is fast, wild and mean as fuck. Daniel Powells vocals remind me of Hetfield, Matt Drake and sometimes a bit of Dave Mustaine and he plays his bass like a god damn pro, Roland Arthur on Guitar is in charge of riffs and hooks and he deals them out like he has millions of it. Last but not least: Jason Wheeler on drums is a top notch batterista and I will tell you why I use the Italian word for drummer... because the dude batters his drum-kit into oblivion and he does it very precise. All in all, this is a really great Thrash Metal record with absolutely talented artists doing what they do best: rip your head right off! FFO: HAVOK, ANNIHILATOR, DEATH ANGEL 8,5/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #doom #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #heavymetalmusic #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB8YSUVib0t/?igshid=1sf4sdiwtvpp7

Artist: Cursed Blade Title: Cursed Demo Genre: Heavy Metal Release Date: March 4th 2020 Label: Self-Released Demo time Headbangers! Today: CURSED BLADE from Indianapolis, Indiana!!! The band formed in 2019 because Ty Winslow (v) wanted to start a traditional heavy metal band and Andy Hassing (g/v) showed interest. Musically this is a fucking old-school 80`s heavy metal blueprint. The band says their main influences are: JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN (a bit of Tipton/Downing and Halford is felt here) MERCYFUL FATE/KING DIAMOND (a bit of screaming here and there, good ones) MANOWAR, EXCITER ( the grandeur of Eric Adams and Joey is clearly admired) 3 INCHES OF BLOOD (no audible influence) Raw and dirty, booze reeking speed metal worshipping?Check! Audible KING DIAMOND fandom including high pitched screams ? Check! A vocalist that sounds best when screaming his throat to pieces? Check!!! Also I think it is legendary and a bit hilarious that everyone involved here seems to be singing (except Sara on drums). To think I stumbled over this asking bands for their band camp pages… this band here offers their demo for free and because I feel guilty when I download music for free I write this review (and because this somehow really rips in a die hard underground kinda way). Conclusion: If you like your metal with sharp and rusty edges and don’t mind a little bit of toxaemia you should check this out immediately! 7/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #doom #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #heavymetalmusic #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB6DR1Siph5/?igshid=1azomm0qwy5yr

Artist: Empress Title: Premonition Genre: Doom /Sludge/Post Release Date: July 24th 2020 Label: Self-Released Tonight on this channel from Vancouver, Canada: EMPRESS!!! EMPRESS was formed after Peter Sacco (g/v) and Chris Doyle (dr) went to a gig by doom band ELDER, the guys were truly inspired by the bands massive and powerful sound and psychedelia. After that fateful gig they enlisted bassist Brenden Gunn to join them on very own slow-paced riff journey through the genres of stoner, doom and sludge. Let’s cite the press text: “EMPRESS is not a vehicle for entertainment or flashy showmanship. Rather, it is an emotionally driven, abstract band, and meant to serve as an artistic experience which has a culmination of life experiences, doubts, and growth from what life has brought each member. ” ”Premonition” is their first full-length output to date and it rips. Musically the narrative is mostly commuting between chill, slow passages that quietly bridges the distance to the next sonic outburst. This structure somewhat appeals to me even if I don’t like the harsh vocals Sacco throws at the listener from time to time. You have to allow yourself to engage with this music, best be seated or lay down on your couch and be sure to have your favourite beverage at your side to chill a hundred percent. Conclusion: recommended for fans of THE SWORD, AMENRA, ELDER, and YOB Rating: 7 / 10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #doom #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #heavymetalmusic #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB2hHKJiRdz/?igshid=79kgt9nwcumj

Artist: Shuulak Title: Citrinitas Genre: Heavy Metal Release Date: 30th November 2019 Label: Self-Released How come I seldom review stuff from the Netherlands? I like the Netherlands! I will find out why later... first: SHUULAK! I stumbled upon this very cool sounding folks during a YouTube video of Germany’s Gore minister (‘Durch die Nacht mitm Goreminister’ - Teil 88) and at first I was a bit shocked because visually SHUULAK reminds me of quite a few 90s bands (from Goth / Shock Rock aesthetic to a bit of Industrial kinda look). I played the guessing game and was unprepared for the simple fact that SHUULAK sound fucking great! Everything I guessed, feared or thought to know based on the visuals was shattered to pieces as soon as Bastiën Baron started to sing. A good technique, good sound, and on top a rich and versatile voice (right up my alley when it comes to vocals). Towers drums are precise and well timed, bass and guitars work as a unity and all together SHUULAK create an appealing high melodic, modern heavy metal package. My fave is named ‘Chaos Born’, a rocking straight forward tune with great melodies. Conclusion: If you never heard of SHUULAK: after reading this you ran out of excuses bud... Artist: Falconer Title: From A Dying Ember Genre: Folk/ Power Metal Release Date: June 26th 2020 Label: Metal Blade Records Tonight on this channel: A swansong, a goodbye, a last reach for the stars… This is the review of the last record of FALCONER, as the 5 guys from Sweden have announced to disband after the release of “From a Dying Ember”. The band was formed in 1999 after the splitting of the Viking metal band MITHOTYN (Stefan Weinerhall wanted to continue to make folk-influenced music but discard of the harsh vocals and use clean vocals). In 2000 FALCONER released the first demo and one year later the self-titled first LP. Now in 2020 we await the ninth and last full-length record “From a Dying Ember”. Here is an excerpt of the press text: “Before song-writing began for the follow-up to Black Moon Rising, the band took some time off. Stefan Weinerhall decided not to rush the writing process, but rather take an extra year just to make sure the written material would be of the utmost quality. Some of the earlier material was scrapped and re-written halfway into the process; additionally, Stefan re-wrote one song with his old MITHOTYN bandmate, Karl Beckmann (guitars/keyboards). The echoes from MITHOTYN are surely noticeable on the track “Rapture”. The effort that was put into this record: writing , composing and mixing is audible in every second, well-thought-out melodies, high melodic and catchy structures and top notch lyrics sung by Mathias Blad (that guy is in top form). Even if this is a record that never denies his folk roots it sometimes remind me of IRON MAIDEN when it comes to guitars and pacing, the structures differ in ways of length and tempo (the overlong guitar solos are not a part of this band unlike IRON MAIDEN`s sound). The only other bands that are partly similar are VISIGOTH and BLIND GUARDIAN but the similarities are small concerning this record. All in all this is a record worthy of FALCONER`s legacy. If you like high melodic folk metal with awesome clean vocals you may have a new favourite record to become acquainted with. 9/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #folk #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBvlUebiC3q/?igshid=1tentkrgqdjmv

Artist: Scrollkeeper Title: Auto da Fe Genre: Heavy Metal Release Date: 11th June 2020 Label: Self-released Album Review Tonight we taste a bit of Texan steel from SCROLLKEEPER. Formed in Houston, Texas in 2016 these guys like it old-school and a bit on the odd side of Metal. This is the bands full-length debut after one EP and three singles. The sound of these guys remind me of ARCANE TYRANT, the vocals thwart the guitar melodies (like in early ANTHRAX with Joey, he did sing awesome but against the grain). Once you get over this you realize their melodic appeal. I would say most of the time the compositions have a NWOBHM feel to it mixed with early US Metal. Justin McKittrick’s voice is a bit special, not approaching the songs like most singers too, sometimes he rather speaks very accentuated instead of singing in a classical way. From the feel this goes into an Epic Metal direction sometimes reminding me of never bands like MEGATON SWORD and even CIRITH UNGOL OR MANILLA ROAD. It is an odd mix for sure but it grows over time like so many classics do. The LP at hand was engineered by Alexander K. and the cover artwork is by Last Light Designs. 7/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #doom #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #heavymetalmusic #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBtGiSeCbEh/?igshid=uk06148ym9qg

Artist: Kalahari Title: Theia EP Genre: Death Metal / Groove Metal Release Date: 26th June 2020 Label: Self-released Italian Death / Groove Metal you say? Yup but don’t forget the mixed vocals and the Prog Metal moments in the mix which make it interesting for a guy like me that normally would never review a death band. The object of my confused delight is KALAHARI from Forli, Italy. KALAHARI was formed in 2016 and it is a band that has done quite a lot in that tight time-frame (1 Demo, 1 EP, 2 singles and the EP I am writing right now). The PR Agency says: “The band members have a musical background that touches different shades of the metal genre. Powerful break-downs and galloping riffs alternated with acoustic arpeggios and sinuous melodies: the result is an overwhelming sound, which remains clean, and still. Vocalist Nicola Pellacani stated: ‘‘Theia’ has been a hell of a ride. A 5-track EP might not seem that big of a deal on paper, but recording this thing was a real challenge for us. This record signs a transition for KALAHARI. We have always been an underground band and this represents our first approach with the environment of a professional studio. We understood there is still so much to learn, and this is the message we have for all the young bands like us out there: be hungry! Never stop learning and always listen, but chose well who you are going to listen to.’” Listen: I am really not a fan of growling or Death Metal at all but if you do it occasionally to set a course and use it as a stylistic device instead of overdoing it to a point where it doesn’t matter if there is an actual vocalist or an angry orang-utan in front of the microphone... you get what I intend to say. Vocalist Nicola does it all: thrash vocals, growling and actual singing (and he does it pretty good). My fave is ‘I Am The Mountain’ a prog epic with awesome vocals and a high pitch scream that was totally worth every growl on the way. Conclusion: Even if you do not dig Death Metal growls  you should give this a go, these dudes are talented as fuck and deserve your full attention. Artist: Conjuring Fate Title: Curse Of The Fallen Genre: Heavy Metal Release Date: 15th November 2019 Label: Pure Steel Records It is a seldom thing to review bands from Northern Ireland (Belfast to be precise). I don’t know the reason but I just don’t come across many musicians from that area. CONJURING FATE is an exception from that rule. Formed in 2005, ‘Curse Of The Fallen’ is their second full-length record to date. In 2019, I was made aware that there is a band I should check out. The new record was not done so I could not do one of my brilliantly written reviews at that time and because I involved myself with a lot of work both the band and me had soon forgotten our digital encounter. It was just lately that I read a few reviews and lots of praise about CONJURING FATE and their record, ‘Curse Of The Fallen’, and once again I got quite curious and wanted to have a go at the material myself. Luckily, I caught Phil Horner on the right foot and finally got my hands on this sweet stuff. So, let’s get a look at the press text: “Hailing from Northern Ireland, CONJURING FATE bring classic Heavy Metal in epic proportions! This highly energetic Heavy Metal was originally formed in 2005 by guitarist Phil Horner and vocalist Tommy Daly. Born from the love of all things Metal, guitarist Karl Gibson, bassist Steve Legear, and drummer Niall McGrotty joined forces to bring this Metal machine to the stage once again! Their style of Heavy Metal has been compared to bands such as IRON MAIDEN & HELLOWEEN.” I, myself also think that the musical approach of CONJURING FATE has a bit of a Teutonic sound to it sometimes like a mix of GRAVEDIGGER, SAXON and IRON MAIDEN would sound: heavy, old-school, very melodic and catchy as hell. Daly’s voice pretty much reminds me of Byford’s pipes to be honest, the less classic approach when it comes to pace and rhythm is what sets CONJURING FATE apart from bands that only do good worshipping. Every involved musician is pretty skilled in my book but I have to take up the cudgels on behalf of Niall Mc Grotty: his drumming is exceptional. #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #northernirelandartists #belfast #conjuringfate (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBnMHEZi8Dm/?igshid=1jfcyqwzm7hh5

Artist: Coltre Title: Under The Influence EP Genre: Heavy Metal Release Date: 31st July 2020 Label: Dying Victims Productions All hail England! From the land of milk, honey and the legendary NWOBHM comes: COLTRE! Three guys from London that play kick-ass tunes in the ways of the old. But behold the label info first: “COLTRE was forged in London, England by guitarists Daniel Sweed and Marco Stamigna in May 2019. They met at a MIDNIGHT concert and decided to form a band inspired by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. They started rehearsing, and by the beginning of 2020 had recorded the four-song EP "Under the Influence". The band self-released "Under the Influence" on CD and digital formats, but now Dying Victims steps forward to champion COLTRE’s cause and release it as a five-song work, featuring an exclusive new track. I really like the press texts of Dying Victims Records (always imagine the writer doing the write-up only one handed because he has a burning sword in the other hand to feel the almighty power of metal while writing... yup, I need a sword). It is an understatement to say these guys sound pretty old-school and yes, they are clearly inspired by some of the bigger names of the NWOBHM (ANGELWITCH to only name one band) and of course the obvious bands apart from that particular scene like THIN LIZZY. The guitar-work is excellent, the bass is audible and works as a pacemaker together with the kick-ass drumming. Conclusion: If you love epic melodies played with killer riffs and yet need a bit of dirtiness in the mix, check out COLTRE! Artist: Malleus Title: Your Nightmare Calls Genre: NWOBHM / Doom Release Date: 3rd July 2020 Label: Golden Core Records Andro Coulton formed MALLEUS very shortly after leaving WITCHFYNDE. The band recorded four songs and more or less disbanded right after that. It took 40 years to record and release a debut and here we are: ‘Your Nightmare Calls’ is a piece of music that is quite rough and more than old-school from the sound of it. Coulton mixes Doom and 70s Rock into the mix as well as the DIY sound of the NWOBHM. This is no plastic production for the brainless masses this is raw, handmade, real authentic doomed Heavy Rock with Gram Swan on vocals! Swan's voice reminds me a lot of Ian Astbury’s sexy pipes with its cocky verve and a natural produced vibrato. The press text mentioned the special bass sound (I listen to this over cheap ear plugs, so the subtleties mean nothing to me as there’s nothing audible for me). In the most mixes I simply can’t make out the bass audio track. All in all, this is an old-school record from an old-school band. Gram’s voice sounds way better on the new tracks by the way since the old ones were sung by Andro. Check this out and tell me what you think about it, dear reader. 7/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #doom #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #heavymetalmusic #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBii_S6CANQ/?igshid=1lhvpk26bizat

Artist: High Spirits Title: Hard To Stop Genre: Hard Rock / Heavy Metal Release Date: 31st July 2020 Label: High Roller Records It is always nice to review artists that have already won you over as a fan (except for the chance a new output is really a let-down, spoiler: this is not a let-down). The first LP of multi-instrumental genius Chris Black ( PROFESSOR BLACK, AKTOR, PHARAO, SUPERCHRIST) ‘Another Night’ was critically acclaimed in 2011, the 2014 follow-up ‘You Are Here’ was one of my first reviews (I enjoyed it quite a lot) and now, as I try to expand into every platform I can find there is the chance to review a new HIGH SPIRITS record. In 2015 I saw the guys live and what I remember to this day was how he introduced his band: “My name is Chris and these are my friends”. Of course, the gig was smoking and the crowd went nuts for the whole play time (I got me a nice blood-red shirt... I had to). What I think is funny is that he originally started HIGH SPIRITS because he was bored by the local scene of his home-town. I was fascinated by the first output of Chris Black and I am still struck by his mastery, he is able to put a record together all by himself (many very skilled artists struggle even if they play multiple instruments). The key to this is simple: even if Black writes, composes and plays every instrument on his HIGH SPIRITS records he never lacks compassion and heart (this often gets lost when working alone it seems). Not here, the melodies are well-thought-out, old-school, high melodic and full of the raw power every fan of HIGH SPIRITS loves so dearly. This is the bands fourth full-length record to date and it is a hit, again! This is for fans of NIGHT DEMON, VANDERBUYST, HAUNT and CAULDRON. Hurry up and Pre-Order this right now at https://www.hrrshop.de. 9/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #highspirits #hardrock #chrisblack #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #highenergyrock #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #multiinstrumentalist #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBfo_9uieEs/?igshid=mnkluqdrsacm

Artist: Savage Blood Title: Downfall Genre: Heavy Metal / Thrash Metal Release Date: 26th June 2020 Label: Self-Released The next band comes from Osnabrück, I have some good memories concerning that town but that is another tale to be told. The band is named SAVAGE BLOOD and they play a mix of power, thrash and old-school melodic heavy metal. Let’s hear the band on that issue: “No question: In the nineties ENOLA GAY were an absolutely firm component of the European Power Metal scene. Their mixture of catchy melodies, crunchy riffs, lusty thrash elements and catchy hooks knew how to inspire, and also on stage the Osnabrückers could always convince. As headliner, as support of acts like STRATOVARIUS, ICED EARTH, METAL CHURCH, SAXON, TESTAMENT, KING DIAMOND or NEVERMORE, or festivals. SAVAGE BLOOD have all the trademarks that were the hallmarks of ENOLA GAY at the time, but they carry their sound to a new level. In addition, a fresh, contemporary component is added, thus combining tradition and modernity. The band is already looking forward to many live gigs in the future! Stay Metal!” Aside from the vocals I can even make out an ICED EARTH influence or resemblance in SAVAGE BLOOD’s approach. Tough Thrash like structures all over, very melodic, good vocals... all the things I like. I really dig ‘Queen on the Run’ this is a catchy motherfucker of a song, melodic, riff-laden with nice hooks and even a sing-along chorus. The only thing I have to mention is that, again, I cannot hear the bass (I think I’d have to put it on full blast on pretty good headphones to hear it but I never listen to music on full blast and my headphones are shitty 15€ pieces) aside from that this is really fun to listen to and I recommend you folks buy it. #schwermetallisch #reviews #picoftheday #nwothm #nwobhm #heavymetal #metal #rock #music #metalhead #hardrock #thrashmetal #metalguy #metalmusic #metalband #doom #metalheads #headbanger #powermetal #guitarist #concert #rockmusic #heavymetalmusic #speedmetal #blacksabbath #ironmaiden #doommetal #metallica #band #reviewoftheday (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBaXFUeiBS7/?igshid=nrry8n0dct8t

Artist: Poison Asp Title: Beyond the Walls of Sleep - The Complete Work Genre: Thrash Metal Release Date: 21st February 2020 Label: Golden Core Nightfall in Duisburg, the world is ridden by the pandemic and America is on the brink of a civil war, the perfect moment in time to review old-school Teutonic Thrash Metal! Tonight, it is POISON ASP from Speyer, Rhineland-Palatinate. Formed in 1984 on the verge of Thrash Metal to conquer the world, POISON ASP released their demo in 1987. A great year for Thrash Metal as it saw the release of: TESTAMENT’s ‘Legacy’, HEATHEN’s ‘Breaking the Silence’ and TANKARD’s ‘Chemical Invasion’ among other big releases from various bands. Normally they should have had their big breakthrough as thrash bands were in great demand but sadly it worked out different. The band were signed by TRC (The Record Company) but TRC was history after only three releases and the self-release of ‘Beyond the Walls of Sleep’ was made difficult because the B-side of the master was missing. POISON ASP disbanded while the record was still in the pressing plant. Years later, POISON ASP had become almost famous and the old material was still in Thumer’s house who returned from New Zealand, this was the chance to finally release all that stuff on CD. The CD includes a 24-page strong booklet with interviews, liner notes, photos and memorabilia. Aside from the Ultimate editions of the MANILLA ROAD back catalogue this is the most expensive and elaborate production Golden Core did yet. Sound-wise this is quite rough but not due to the mixing and restoration, no! POISON ASP were quite the rough bunch when it came to Heavy Metal. The songs are mostly mid-tempo, the guitar sound rips . The drums are a bit too far in the background here and there but I blame the original recording for that, the bass is heard here and there as it not bluntly mirrors the guitar melodies. This is a rough old-school Thrash band that still manages to kick ass with their work from the late 80s and the vocals are authentic as fuck. So, if you are into 80s Thrash / Speed that does not fuck around with too much finesse or melody you. 7,5/10 #schwermetallisch #reviews #goldencore (hier: Neumühl, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBXuc6MCrKO/?igshid=1gvs5sneop1yz
