But we grew up together. You looked out for me. You knew I was different. We lived in the same home. Taken care of by the same parents. Played with the same cats.

My big brother, always a people person. Everything seems to come so naturally for you. Always the over achiever

I’m a fish out of water. Not meant to be here on land. My home is the sea.

We are not the same. Not the same species.

But I’m glad you are here. I’m glad you’re my brother. Some how we were brought together and now you are a part of me forever

So no matter how much I may change. Even if our faces no longer resemble each other

My whole life I held on to the belief that I wasn’t alone

That I would find a pod I could call my own

How am I supposed to find a partner when my face isn't mine?

It's so frustrating. It bothers me enough to not recognize myself in the mirror, but knowing that whatever future partner I may find will also see that, is even worse.

I want my partner to see me.

Pros about being a mermaid is that technically, everyone do know that you are a mermaid because they see it as you wanting to be a professional mermaid or a hobby.

Cons is that nobody knows how deep of a level this identity is. It shaped who I am today. It saved me from a lifetime of insecurities because all mermaids are beautiful. It made me be able to see myself rather than being a shadow figure in my head. It gives me a piece of mind of just me escaping deep into the ocean when things get too tough on land.

Some times I get really uncomfortable breathing air. It feels so empty to me.

I wish I could breathe underwater. Take a deep breath and feel the water flow through me and filter out from my gills.

I feel like I borrow the air. Hold it in my lungs then push it out again. It feels hollow and dry.

Maybe that’s why breathing exercises never helped to calm me down. Every breath felt like I was gasping for something that wasn’t there

I feel like mermaid/merfolk is the best way to refer to what I am. It means a lot to me to be a mermaid and it’s a title I wear with pride.

However most people have a different definition of what a mermaid is. While there are so many types and variations the most well known one is half-human half-fish. Like in The little mermaid. I am not human. I am not part human. I may have humanoid characteristics but I am more related to fishes and whales.

It’s something I feel like I have to clarify. I am a mermaid. That’s what I’m called. But my existence is not tied to humanity

The thing is I like life on land for others. I like people and the way they dance. That they can hold each other’s hands. The variety of languages and sounds they make.

I like the animals of land and sky. Animals who are fluffy with long tails, the expressive ears. Creatures that skitter and crawl. Those that jump, run and gallop. They live in trees and climb. Some fly and have feathers. Some need to be under the sun.

Grass is soft and flowers are pretty. Trees are big, tall, and strong. Cacti can hurt yet still provide nutrients for life around it.

Bugs are small and have an amazing amount of variation. With communities as complex as any humans.

I like the land I really do. It’s just not my home. It’s a world I don’t belong to. I’m grateful to have seen it but I want to belong. I need to go back to the water. It’s incredible up here but I never asked to be amazed. I just want to go home
