Mommy, Maligayang Kaarawan! I miss you beyond words. One month ago, I lost one of the most important people in my life. She was vital in raising me and my sister in the Philippines. She was the one who dropped everything when I called for her at night because I couldn't sleep. She would sit with me on our cold concrete staircase and peel an orange with a perfectly in tact twist to entertain me. She cooked the best meals! Oh if you only saw how small our kitchen was, and how BIG a feast she magically whipped out from inside it! Stories of mommy always circled around her generosity, and that she taught many in our community valuable, concrete lessons. She didn't have her own family, but she raised two little girls like they were her own....and helped do the same for others before and after us. As a kid I really didn't realize we would leave the Philippines, let alone our family there. But our family knew. Mommy knew full well she would need to let us go when the time came to reunite with our actual mom. She fully embraced rearing us knowing she would make the same sacrifice our mother did 10 years earlier....letting go of your children. But until that time came, she became the mother figure we needed, owned it wholly, and did it incredibly. In her lifetime, Mommy Auring (Aurora) showed us her selfless love and strong faith through her actions. I hope I can honor her by showing at least an ounce of that same selflessness in mine. Maraming Salamat Mom. Mahal na Mahal ka namin. I'm so grateful you now get to rest in heaven with our good and faithful Father. This is my Mom's portrait. I drew it on a note app on my phone with my fingers. I'll do her more justice with a hand drawn or maybe painted portrait later on. This morning, still in our bedroom, I was tickling my son & asking him whose Jersey he was wearing. It was Michael Jordan's but he kept saying Kobe Bryant! I asked him about three times...and over & over he said "Kobe Bryant!!" laughing, yelling it out. . Hearing the news later on seemed like the cruelest joke. I remember when Kobe debuted as a rookie. I remember him being compared to or people saying he was the next Jordan. I remember I and my sister picking up our first signed Kobe rookie card (we collected them Topps). I remember the endless games we watched of the Lakers, the losing seasons, the championships, my first live game seeing him play...all the way upto his epic last game before retiring. Needless to say growing up in LA, seeing Kobe become the legend that he is and knowing that he's gone, is devastating...even more so, finding out his daughter, just 13, has passed with him. My heart goes out to his family and to everyone lost in the helicopter with them. Friends & Fam, this Friday, June 7th, I'll be a part of a group art show at @staygallery in CA. I'm super humbled I get to do this again.
