Recurring Real-Life Inspirations in Steinbeck’s Works

While I was rereading The Grapes of Wrath after finishing East of Eden, I noticed a particular similarity between the character of Uncle John Joad in “Grapes” and Tom Hamilton from “Eden.”

Now, as East of Eden is semi-autobiographical, and features members of Steinbeck’s real life family, we learn that Tom Hamilton was Steinbeck’s actual uncle. From Steinbeck’s descriptions of him we can tell that he did love his uncle deeply, and that’s part of why I believe he was also the inspiration for John Joad in The Grapes of Wrath. 

Using Tom Hamilton as inspiration wouldn’t be the first time that Steinbeck has incorporated aspects of his close friends and family into his books either. The most famous example of this would probably be Ed Ricketts, his best friend, who inspired the characters of Doc from “Cannery Row,” Slim in “Of Mice and Men,” Lee in “East of Eden,” and even the preacher, Casy, in the aforementioned “Grapes of Wrath.” 

Now, it’s said of Tom that “you could feel Tom when you came near him- you could feel strength and warmth and an iron integrity. And under all of this was a shrinking- a shy shrinking.” And later, “Violence and shyness- Tom’s loins needed women and at the same time he did not think himself worthy of a woman. For long periods he would welter in howling celibacy, and then he would take a train to San Francisco and wallow in women, and then he would come silently back to the ranch, feeling weak and unfulfilled and unworthy.” Now, compare this with Steinbeck’s description of John’s vices in The Grapes of Wrath. “It was told of him that once he went clear to Shawnee and hired three whores in one bed… But when one of his appetites was sated, he was sad and ashamed and lonely again.” In addition, both men ‘punish’ themselves quite similarly, “(Tom) would punish himself with work… would cut tough oakwood.” And “(John) cut wood and took no pay.” And, finally, the thing which finally cements this theory for me is that Steinbeck “knew when Tom had arrived… because under under our pillows, Mary’s and mine, there would be packages of gum.” And John also “left gum under pillows for children.” 

(Also, on an unrelated note, I find it interesting that The Grapes of Wrath character’s name is John… It’s likely that Steinbeck just gave him that name because it’s common, but I can’t help but feel like there’s some deeper meaning to it.)
