Bamboo Fabrics; Facts and Secrets

So happy to introduce our guest blogger Rachel Stinson with her insight on the awesomeness of Bamboo!

When you think of bamboo, you’ll most probably refer to household materials, trees, paper, furniture, and other wood-like materials. However, the use of bamboo has also expanded to cover clothing and textiles as well. The use of the bamboo fiber was introduced in the 20th century and since then, it has gone on to carve a niche for itself in the textile industry.

To those who might still not know about it, here are a few facts about bamboo that will help you to better understand what it is and how it can be used:

When looking from the perspective of how the fabric is made and the contents as well, it is possible to classify bamboo fabric into four different varieties. These four categories are pure, blend, viscose and mechanical. It goes without saying that all these are pretty unique in their own way.

Just as you can guess, pure bamboo fabric is made completely out of bamboo, with no other material added to it. The fabric is rare and due to its lack of general flexibility, it is not usually used in the manufacture of textiles and clothes.

In order to yield clothing and textiles, it is common practice to combine bamboo material with other materials like cotton and various other fabrics. The percentage of bamboo to other materials in the cloth can vary from manufacturer to manufactures. For instance, while So Rad might use a higher percentage of bamboo, another fashion designer can choose to dial back on the bamboo use a little bit more and make use of a higher percentage of other materials like cotton or jute.

Manufacturers make use of machines in order to create the mechanical version of the bamboo fabric. First, they break the bamboo down by hand and treat it with the aid of these machines in order to create the fabric.

Viscose fabric is the commercial product of bamboo. It is the category of bamboo that is much more popular among manufacturers and fashion designers and it is also preferred to other fabrics in order to make textiles. It is made by breaking down the bamboo with the use of chemicals and forming a pulp-like texture. Viscose fabric is quite flexible and it is also quite easily wound.

Bamboo fabric is extremely soft, light in weight and it has a slight glossy appearance and matches well with similar textiles. Bamboo fabric is hypoallergenic so you can rest assured that you won’t get any allergic reactions or irritations when it comes in contact with your skin. It’s also able to wick moisture, it’s antibacterial, so it won’t smell and it’s breathable. This fabric is a perfect choice for babies and children.

Bamboo is biodegradable, highly sustainable and an eco-friendly fabric that has been endorsed by fashionistas and environment enthusiasts all over the world. If all of these facts don’t sell you on Bamboo fabric, find a sample and touch it. You’ll be in love.
