i feel like one of the reasons i love atla so much is how it portrays the fact that the protagonists- the hero’s expected to save the WORLD- are just kids.

Like they get distracted doing stupid stuff and make dumb mistakes and have fun and want to go adventure but they can’t let themselves forget the world they live in, where they’re expected to end a tyranny and KILL PEOPLE despite the fact that they’re kids

It’s so heartbreaking thinking about what they were all robbed of, especially Aang because he’s one of the ones who acts the most ‘childlike’. I mean, the poor guy is literally TWELVE at the start of the series when he learns that everyone he’s ever known has been murdered by a nation he’s expected to take down all on his own. Of course he still wants to play with some big fish and have some fun.

And also Azula. Like she’s a 14 year old that’s been so involved in war and destruction since she was a baby that she can’t even play a volleyball game without needing to decimate the opposition. Or get invited to a party and talk to a guy like a ‘normal’ teenager. Those scenes were made to make the audience laugh but watching them again makes me realise how sad the reality these children are living in is.

For me, it’s what makes the show one of the best. Because while all this big shit is happening and nations are falling and people are dying, we’re still reminded that these ‘heros’ are all just kids. And that makes everything just so much worse.
