RANDOM LATE NIGHT RAMBLE POST

Move along now. I'm just tired and using Tumblr as a mini diary for my ranty thoughts so I can sleep.

So it appears ship shaming FICTIONAL CHARACTERS is the big thing now in Fandoms?

Before the break, I'm going to go on record and state I lived through the shipping wars of the 2000s and 2010s.

I was scrolling through Tiktok comments and... I've seen quite a bit of ship shaming. Things like "I hate that pairing," "that pairing creeps me out," "Why would you pair them?!" And other comments which might make someone feel like they're being attacked.

You can definitely tell who are younger users and who are older users. Younger users have never lived through many of the stages that shipping and the development of fanfics went through, including serious shipping wars.

You can almost always see this on posts where videos or comments mention two male characters being paired for one reason or another, and specifically certain pairings of the *ahem* blood related varieties.

Example:

People were talking about shipping, and someone mentioned Wincest (which I recall being very popular for a long time), calling it creepy, and then commenters mentioned Thorki and called it incest.

My mind is going "wait...what?" In the sense that I've read a lot of Norse mythology as well as novels written with Loki as the main character (non-Marvel) and went through the mental list how Thor and Loki are never depicted as blood related in any of them. Loki was always depicted as being brought to Asgard (usually brought in as a "blood brother" through a pact or something like that.) But he's never referred to as being actually blood related to Thor in any way.

My mind then went through the process of going through what I remember from the Marvel characters and still boils down to them not being blood related. Even when "adopted," Loki was basically a spoils of war and rebelled when he learned the truth.

Only Thor still considers them ADOPTED brothers.

Then, I realized... I'm desensitized to most pairings in fanfics because my brain separates characters in them from the original source material so I tend to read fanfics as stories with characters who happen to have similar appearances and names to characters from books (I mean some are so well-written its not difficult to separate the fanfic from the source material).

Add to the fact that in college, I had a classmate who constantly threw random crack pairings at me. And I mean REALLY random pairings. They'd read new fanfics and then go on and on about them.

I guess I'm trying to say... a lot of pairings don't bother me anymore, but freaking out about the ones I don't like will not change the fact people pair who they want to.

I mean... they're fictional characters. Not a lot of characters are based on real people unless it's stated, so... why are people ship shaming?

Either way... unless the original author openly states they don't like fanfics being written, it won't stop people from pairing who they want. You don't have to ship shame others just because you don't like the characters as a pairing. If you don't like the pairing, JUST DONT READ IT. MOVE. ON.

It's not that difficult to just keep scrolling. ESPECIALLY on Tiktok, which is a scrolling platform. You'd do the same thing on AO3 if you see a story with a pairing you don't like, would you not?

On that note, to my knowledge, only ONE AUTHOR openly stated they didn't like or want fanfics written about their characters, and that was Anne Rice. So all fanfic sites basically banned them (yet there was if I recall the forbidden archive website, which was ALL fanfics for Anne Rice's characters. I remember reading about it).

And a lot of books that became popular also started out originally as fanfics.

Also...people have an issue with certain ships between male characters, yet when it happens with hetero pairings, it's okay? Like enemies to lovers? I've seen that being shamed, too.

I've jumped around a bit, and it's like 4 a.m., so I don't think any of this will make sense, so I'm going to bed. I'll probably delete this in the morning.

I'm thinking about initiating a challenge for myself. This challenge will be for the month of March.

Once a day, I will write a sentence or paragraph. Each sentence or paragraph will build off the one from the previous day. By the end of the month, the whole goal is to see if I made a story that makes sense or not.

The only thing is...I'd need a beginning.

Im thinking of letting the comments write a beginning, and I'll draw at random which one it will be, but I don't get many comments 🙃.

Someone mentioned Lilith as Pride, and while that is an interesting theory, this post was my own theory.

Lilith as the sin of Pride wouldn't work with my theory for a couple of reasons:

Lilith wasn't born in hell. She was cast down into Hell by heaven. The theory centers around the Sins being born in Hell.

Lilith is currently on a beach likely in heaven.

Finally, Lilith is Queen of Pride just as Lucifer is King of Pride. The ring where the sinners reside, which makes them King and Queen of Sinners.

So, no, I didn't miss the opportunity for Lilith as the sin of Pride. It simply didn't fit with my theory. If I decide to explore other theories in the future, I will. But for now this is my current theory.

So... everyone is talking about the 7 deadly sins from Helluva Boss, but I have a theory. You may disagree, you might agree, but the theory has been discussed with a few other huge fans in person.

Lucifer IS NOT a sin.

I have reasons to back this up;

So, as we see with the sins, they're generally born in hell. Lucifer is a fallen angel. He was not born in hell.

Lucifer is the King of Pride. Pride as in the circle of hell that the sinners reside in, not the sin itself. In fact, we rarely see Lucifer act on the sin itself, really only when Alastors involved.

He has a throne in the courtroom...because he's the highest authority in hell. The hierarchy lists him as such, followed by Lilith and Charlie and THEN the sins. He didn't have to show up to the trial because it wasn't necessary for him to.

The sins could be as followed:

Asmodeus- Lust

Bee- Gluttony

Mammon- Greed

Belphagor- Sloth

Leviathan- (both heads could represent different sins) Envy and Wrath

Satan- Pride

Now you might wonder why I list it this way, but have you noticed the way Satan talks? He brags about creating the imps, claims to have ruled hell before Lucifer fell, he's extremely prideful when his authority is questioned, etc. And he has his own personal guru master imp for when he almost breeches into the sin of wrath.

So

My theory is that Lucifer is not a sin. Do with that knowledge as you will.

Also

Leviathan representing 2 separate sins just makes sense to me. My headcanon is that the head closest to Mammon is Envy and further from Mammon is Wrath.

I did stew on the idea that Satan would be Wrath but with the way he talks Pride is just more...Satan. If that makes sense.
