absolution by slypstream
Lord of the Flies (William Golding)
Gen | Completed | 4.7k Words | 1/1
Character Study, Introspection, Post-Canon
absolution · formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment or: Simon didn’t die a martyr. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, Ralph knows this, and knows that this is not a revelation but rather a quiet truth, one that can only be understood by children with heavy weights chained to their hands, dangling on a cross for no one's sins but their own. Simon didn’t die alone, but he might as well have. Is humanity worth salvation, when Simon’s death had been paraded, a sick, boisterous cavalcade not in his honor but for the sake of his death itself?
fic out now! give it a look :>

i think quite a few people actually missed what the original midnight episode of dr who was about! the creature made everyone turn their backs on each other. this was the first interaction it had with any kind of life, and the message it learned was that power to one comes when people are divided. the first time it met the Doctor, the lesson it came away with was that the way to gain power is by making others turn on each other. the people become monsters, and do the work for you. it became what it is precisely because of what they did to each other, and the original episode was intended to highlight exactly this concept. also, likely why the doctor was so incredibly haunted by it originally. he's seen the best and the worst of the universe, and yet, life doesn't change.

something that stood out to me very distinctly upon watching shoto’s quirk-induced dream sequence in the newest mha movie was the imagery with his father - specifically: his beard, his distance from the children, and his expressions.
in shoto’s dream world, enji still has his beard, which is odd considering that’s a symbol of his aggression or of his anger, generally. having the beard makes him distinct as an authoritative, strict figure in shoto’s eyes because of how he was raised. even in his ideal reality, shoto can’t imagine a world where his father doesn’t still fill that role, regardless of what his dreams are. enji, as a figure of anger, generally, is all shoto has known during his life. his training and his interactions with his father have all been with purpose. he’s never had just a dad to go to when he needed one. shoto’s view of his father with the beard is incredibly significant in that it really does add quite a bit to the idea of shoto forgivinga enji. this movie takes place after the period of time in which enji began to repair his relationship with his remaining children, shoto included. the fact that despite emoji’s efforts, the only thing shoto can see him as is the symbol of aggression speaks to how deeply shoto has been damaged. enji’s treatment of shoto was incredibly intentional and i believe this is something shoto recognized. he acknowledged his dad as a shitty father and refused his power, but despite this, enji still kept a very close watch on his son and still kept a very direct approach to his training. we see him interacting with UA teachers frequently, outside of simply being a pro hero with them, and i don’t think it’s a reach for him to be checking in on shoto’s progress, especially after students have moved to the dorms. endeavor treated shoto as a tool; he was not a son to him (but he traditional sense, at least - shoto was his son in that it’s why he received such treatment; because he’s of endeavor’s blood, because his successes are endeavor’s successes. it’s his surname that comes first on all of shoto’s hero applications) was the means to which enji could achieve his dream. and the fact that in his dream, shoto can’t picture his dad as anything other than an abuser speaks more to the nature of the unique type of abuse he went through than anything else in the show.
shoto dreams of a world where his father doesn’t constantly swallow the world around him - it’s why his distance from his children is so significant. endeavor takes up a very large space in shoto’s life, both physically and mentally (evidenced by many manga panels that tend to express him suffocatingly close to shoto), and having him distant in shoto’s perfect world is exactly why that’s so important. abuse does not go away, but healing cannot happen until in a different environment. shoto, being given the opportunity to exist as a child, can only achieve that if endeavor changes.
