How to Study- when you’re unmotivated
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! Today we’re gonna tackle the big question: How can I study when I have no motivation, at all?
I’ve just gone through a whole week full of tests and I’m really tired of revising material, again and again. Yes, even I lose motivation to study sometimes!
So, let’s move on to the tips.
1. Set goals and visualise them. And imagine what will happen in the long run. If I really work hard for this exam, I’ll be going up that stage in front of 500 students to receive that .prize that everyone’s eyeing for. Take Oprah Winfrey, as an example. As a child watching her grandmother toil away, Winfrey says she’d tell herself over and over again: “My life won’t be like this. My life won’t be like this, it will be better.”

2. Break down your tasks into tinier chunks. That way, you’ll feel like you’re being more productive and feel more motivated to cross of the entire list.
3. 10 minutes rule. Your brain will think it’s more acceptable to learn 10 minutes, but when you are learning, you may want to continue to finish the task (which will exceed 10 minutes).

4. Study with friends/a pal/family member. This tip varies, it depends whether your friends/buddy/family member is supportive and will actually motivate you to get your work done. I’m not really into the whole ‘group study’ style, because well, I’m not that productive if there are people around me.
5. Get the help you need. If you’re still confused about algebra, ask your teacher for help. He/she won’t bite! Instead, they’ll be pleased that their student has the initiative to ask for an explanation.
6. Think about how privileged you are, being in a school and having an access to education. Many kids out there don’t even go to a school. Be thankful people!

7. Acknowledge Your Accomplishments
Reward yourself when you complete a task. Snack on some granola bars, watch a YouTube vid— whatever that makes you happy . Then move on!

That’s all! Hope you have a really productive study session after trying out these tips + tricks!

One of the more profound things I’ve heard recently came from a Mr. Rogers documentary. In a clip from his show, Mr. Rogers had just visited with a musician, and tells his audience that some people play music, and some people don’t, and that’s okay.
And then he said, “The important thing is to find something you feel good about doing.”
That phrasing struck me. “Something you feel good about doing”. Most people would have phrased it as “something you enjoy doing”. Or “something you’re good at doing”. But Mr. Rogers’ subtly different phrasing leads to a profoundly different connotation. “Something you feel good about doing” may not be enjoyable–people who work in hospitals or in disaster zones might not enjoy much of their day, but they probably feel good about helping people. “Something you feel good about doing“ may not be something you’re particularly good at–you may be a terrible artist by any objective standard, but if you feel good about making your art, then it’s a worthwhile endeavor. Looking for “something you feel good about doing” can help you find a truly satisfying life path.
That phrase is also helpful with daily decision-making. Too often, I can make choices based on “what feels good.” I put aside tasks that are too stressful or avoid activities that seem too difficult, in favor of mindlessly browsing the internet. And I enjoy myself. I feel good while I’m doing that. But at the end of the day, I don’t feel good about how I spent my time. However, reminding myself to do “something I feel good about doing” can motivate me to accomplish those more difficult tasks. It can push me to do something outside of my comfort zone, to try something new that I might not be much good at. And maybe this is a blindingly obvious philosophy to everyone else. But I’m grateful for the reminder.

School’s really overwhelmed me already, honestly, and it’s been negatively affecting my mental health, so I’m gonna take a break on here for a while. I’ll probably return at some point, but there’s no guarantee. Sorry y’all!

10 Things I Tell Myself When I Don’t Want To Study
1. You are very lucky and privileged to have access to almost unlimited knowledge and you should appreciate that.
2. Be one of those rare people who step over their insecurities and succeed.
3. You will know what to do as soon as you start. Ideas never appear from inactivity.
4. Make yourself proud.
5. It’s not supposed to be easy. Nothing good ever is.
6. One hour every day doesn’t feel much but its 365 hours a year. You can’t not succeed after so much work.
7. If you give up now, you’ll have to return to this later anyway but from the very beginning.
8. Maybe you think you can never find something to use your skills and mindset for. But if you continue investing in what matters to you, it will find its way out there.
9. Every moment you thought your fears would suppress you has become the time you made it.
10. Make yourself proud.

Day 6 of the Back to School Challenge!
6. Do the handwriting tag! Write “the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog” in lowercase, uppercase, and cursive.
As you can see, I finally got to the handwriting challenge. And as you can see, not only is my handwriting subpar, but I also did it smack dab in the middle of my lab notes (I didn’t really need that space anyway, so it’s fine). ALSO, I can’t cursive for the life of me.

Day 5 of the Back to School Challenge!
5. What is your favorite spot on your school’s campus?
I’d have to say the school’s Online Learning Center. I’ve been going there to get the required amount of working sessions in for my online course (AP Psych) but generally it’s just a nice place for me personally to hang around in. There are very little people there when I work there, as the others who have a release hour tend to sit outside in the commons, and the seats are really comfy. I often just work on my online course while listening to music the entire time. It’s a very chill spot to be in and probably one of my favorite parts of my day!

Day 4 of Back to School Challenge!
4. What are your stationary ride-or-dies?
I’m not super into stationary, but I love all six of my Pilot G2 pens. I use them for debate, generally, and they’re great--mostly because they don’t smudge or anything, which is basically my only requirement for a good pen. I also have this cute pen my cousin gave me that’s really thin and has musical notes on it! Otherwise, I’m not super particular on what stationary I want, though a lot of stationary looks hella cute.

Day 3 of the Back to School Challenge!
I guess I already answered question three in my past post, but anyway...I’ve been trying to study my Spanish vocabulary more consistently through Lingvist. Maybe that’ll help y’all too, if you’re studying a foreign language!
