not to post even more Villains Discourse on main but it really bugs me how people read giving villains tragic backstories as inherently excusing their actions and/or demonizing trauma survivors.
the actual message of Tragic Villains is (almost) always “people who are never taught or given any healthy, constructive outlets for their emotions will often find unhealthy, destructive outlets.” it’s that people who are traumatized and never learn how to cope with that trauma can become a danger to themselves and others. the message isn’t “trauma makes you evil!!!!” or “genocide is okay if you’ve been sad before!!!!” it’s “people need compassion and help to recover from trauma instead of becoming increasingly angry and harming themselves and others in the process.”
this site takes an alarmingly behaviorist and punitive approach to everything and it’s literally the most annoying thing. y’all have this concept that “if we just punish people hard enough, if we just scare them enough, if we just make them feel guilty enough.” that people just Do Bad Things Because They Do Bad Things, I Guess, and Because We Didn’t Threaten Them And Shame Them Enough. but humans are an innately social species. at our very core, we need compassion and kindness. we need healthy relationships with other humans.
you can keep looking at traumatized villains and being like “haha this dumb pathetic sadboi thinks murder is okay because his parents died” but as a survivor myself, unaddressed/untreated trauma absolutely can make you ragey and destructive. i was lucky enough to have support and eventually get the treatment i needed. but it’s not hard at all for me to imagine how, if that hadn’t been the case, that could’ve been me. obviously not on a movie-villain scale like murder or war crimes, but it’s so irritating as someone whose trauma has always manifested as anger to watch people on this site be like “this is just bad writing!!! real survivors/good survivors don’t end up like that the writers just hate survivors and want the audience to condone murder!”
#yeah ok#this is literally what the untamed is about#and people (real and in the story) completely miss it#jin guangyao and xue yang ARE the villains but like….#the entire point of the story is that they don’t exist in a vacuum#as more and more gets revealed wwx watch all the clan leaders sit there and curse jgy and xy and he Knows That Nothing Has Changed#jgy and xy could have been avoided#they are villains and their actions can’t be excused#but they are the symptom of the problem#they were treated with cruelty and at best apathy#they received no compassion in their lives#and by the end of the story only the main cast realizes#and for everybody else the evil has been defeated#it’s good now#but like wwx knows that it will happen again#inevitably there will be another jgy there will be another xy#what I DONT like is when people minimize their actions tho#however much I think jgy and xy could at some point have been redeemed#or that their actions were avoidable#and that they needed compassion#it doesn’t change the fact that they ended up inflicting that trauma on others#even with all their own trauma they are not entitled to forgiveness#xy wasn’t entitled to forgiveness from xxc#yes they wouldn’t have been that way if they were treated kindly#but they have now done horrific crimes that can’t be excused#explained yes but not excused

I feel like due to mom-trauma in a modern au that Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji would be in contact with each other weekly if not daily, no matter what. If it goes longer than a week without hearing from each other they both get a little antsy and Lan Wangji will straight up panic if it goes longer than two weeks and Xichen won’t answer his calls (tragedy of a broken phone and no memorized phone numbers and Wangji’s refusal to get social media)
They’re both appalled to find out that WWX and JC will go months without speaking and then just show up at each other’s house with nothing more than a “you up?” Text. Xichen is less so, because he gets that not everyone is as close as he and Wangji. Wangji however is extra confused because the only other brother relationship he’s seen is Huaisang ans Mingjue and they call each other daily even when they’re both hella busy atleast for a few minutes.

Who do you think should be the only human character in a Muppets The Untamed adaptation? I think it'd be hilarious if human Lan Qiren had to struggle to get a bunch of muppets to behave.

The modern equivalent to Wen Ning pushing Wei Wuxian around in the wagon is Wei Wuxian gathering all six feet of himself into a shopping cart and having Wen Ning sprint him down the frozen foods aisle at 9pm just before closing time
