’twas the time when I ran into the X-Files

It’s been more than twenty-one years since I fed my kindergarten-mate with a gravel, pretending it to be alien food. I was playing Fox Mulder at the time; even though I am female. I had to play Mulder, because I was the tallest of my friends. But don’t worry, it didn’t left scars on my childhood. And I met the above mentioned mate of mine a few years ago. And she still was healthy…

I can’t find words. Not because I’ve long written something artistically beneficial, but because I am flooded with nostalgia. My childhood shows and movies returned! They are at my door, knocking, calling me to harvest those old feelings and memories; to time travel to carefree days, where social expectations, work and relationships were just far, futuristic daydreams. I am of course talking about the ninties. Somehow the terms „ninties” and „ninties kids” are nowadays a bit overused gags. But I have to admit, I too identify myself with these terms. I was born in 1990. I remember a lot of things from that time-period. But I’m not gonna talk about them. I’m here to celebrate the return of one of the greatest shows of all time, which had a huge impact on me over the past twenty-plus years. And I’m not talking about Friends, because they haven’t reunited… Yet…

I don’t know the exact same date when the Hungarian MTV 1 (not Music Television, M stands for „Magyar”, which means Hungarian) channel first aired the pilot episode, called „Pilot” (wich is dubbed „Scars”), but I can still remember, that the episodes were aired on Sundays… Around 1994… I was four at the time; mad about TMNT, Disney, afraid of C-3PO… Pretty average little girl with a latent-geek mother and a sci-fi-hater father, both children from communist Hungary. Do You guys want a little history from my little country? Or just wanna skip the exposition and read Wikipedia later? Anyway, my parents’ pop cultural ubringing was very limited. But the ninties filled some gaps. It was the time when my Mom started watching Twin Peaks, Friends, Batman: The animated series and much more. And that’s when The X-Files came into the homes of people around the globe.

The groundbreaking, smart, bold, mysterious show blew everyone’s mind, including my father’s who hates sci-fi and fantasy, and my grandma’s who only watches comedy. As far as I remember, Hungary had very high ratings when it came to The X-Files!

My parents and my grandma gathered in the living room to switch to MTV 1 channel. I was begging to stay and watch the show with them. Needless to say, they said no; it’s too scary and violent for a four year old. I started to beg for the intro, and only for the intro. My parents agreed. And it has just begun. The music… Oh, the music. Sometimes I still shiver, when I hear the first notes. And those pictures, the screaming man… I was terrified. I ran into my room. The next day I was thrilled to tell my friends at kindergarten about the X-files. If my memory recollection is correct, E.R. the series were a regular on television. Nearly everyone watched E.R. at this point, even the kids. (My Mom is a doctor, so naturally E.R. was on all the time.) I remember, my mates and I used to pretend, we are doctors and we recreated the operations from the show on a huge stuffed pink bunny…  The kindergarten teachers had to sew in the bunny’s butt after those operations… But back to the X-files; that Monday everyone talked about that spooky show all the parents started to watch. All about scary aliens and a male and a female cop. (Later on, we learnt about the F.B.I.) Nowadays, when I’m chatting about the X-files with my friends, nearly everybody recollects their childhood memories of the show and these memories are almost similar to mine.

From 1994 to 1998, Sunday evenings belonged to the X-files. I could feel the hype coming from the TV screen when the shoulderpadded talkshowhosts announced the upcoming episodes of X-Files. These were times, when my parents brought me back to my room. „It’s not for kids. It’s scary. You are not allowed to watch. You have to sleep!” I was told all the time. Sometimes I was lucky to sneak into the living room, where I could catch the chilling intro or a glimpse of Mulder and Scully investigating. Speaking about Mulder and Scully; was I the only minor at the time, who totally wanted to see these two as a couple? I was a weird kid...

My very first episode - I was able to watch for about ten minutes - was “Jersey Devil”. I still remember the first time that creature attacked agent Mulder. But I have clear memories of Tooms, the “rubber man” (actual Hungarian translation) with the creepy eyes and his nest made out of bile; the alien amish people from “Gender bender” and Scully’s dad. I also have clear childhood memories of Scully’s abduction and return, Mulder’s alone time with the vampires and of course the “War of the Coprophages”, when Scully eats bonbon from the floor. Time has passed, I started school and my classmates and I used to pretend that our season ticket holders are F.B.I. badges. Scully was my idol. I wanted to become a police woman. My parents convinced me that I should study law in the future, so I can be anything; even a police woman. And I do become a lawyer, but I’m not working for the police…

In the early 2000s I saw Fight the Future. It was good, but kind of confusing for me. I only had my vague memories of the early episodes. After that my interest slowly died…

In 2008, at the age of eighteen,everything changed. X-Files came back after years for one big hit movie. I was pumped. I gathered a few friends and we went to the movies to watch „I want to believe”. I was so happy, yet confused again. Mulder and Scully are happily married (?) together! They had a son (?)! They are hiding? What the heck happened? Where are the aliens? Lucky for me, two separate TV channels were airing all the episodes. And that’s how the real thing happened. 2008 was my new-old introduction to The X-Files! As of 2016 I’ve seen all (202) episodes and the two movies on multiple occasions. I finally realized why I fell in love with the show, even at such an early age. The atmosphere, the mystery, the humor, the intelligence, the characters…

X-Files is and will be one of my favourite series of all time. It gave me so many things: laughs, spooks, tears, inspirations. These are the signs of a good show and quality entertainment.

I’m two episodes into the revival and I’m waiting for the rest of the season. It’s hard to give a review at this point, because as I stated earlier, I’m filled with nostalgic emotions. (Plus I’m about to write a critic of Star Wars 7!)

As for now, search for the X! Binge watch or Netflix and chill! The ninties are back!

Europe’s most tallest uninhabited apartment block will be unbuilt in the near future. The building is in my home city, in Pécs, Hungary. It is a high-rise residential building of 84 meters' height and 25 floors and was built between 1974 and 1976. The building became unstable, and the inhabitants had to move out by the year 1989.

I just realised that I have never taken any pictures of the building. Today I filled this gap.

I added some PS effects to the pics. The smokes on the second one symbolize the neglected and upsetting “life” of this building. (And also made for some artistic effect.)

What if Fifty shades was good?

I just forced myself to watch the movie, Fifty shades of Grey. I’ve never read the books properly; I just read half of the first book. To be honest, I really hate the story. Not because it’s a Twilight fanfiction turned money-machine, but because of the romanticised unhealthy relationship the main characters have. I won’t rant about the relationship, because there are a lot more interesting and detailed essays about the topic, and to be honest, every non-fan are talking about this issue.

Today, I want to talk about the author’s missed opportunity to write an interesting story with morally - non pun intended- grey characters.

If I were the author of “Fifty shades”, I would definitely start with the morals and goals of my main characters. And who are the main characters?

1.) Anastasia Steele

The young, naive college girl, who’s sexually inexperienced- as created by E.L.James.

First of all: what is her backstory? She has a messed up family with a neglecting mother and a stepfather. She also had problems at school (maybe bullied, because of her shyness, because she was studious etc) . She couldn’t fit in. So probably her angst and shyness comes from her childhood and teen years. OK. So, what could be her real dream? Maybe, she wants to be a normal, loving mother and wife; wants to have a career etc. Normal life goals. She goes to college to  study literature. OK, we’re done with her backstory. She becomes the roommate of Kate (see later). She befriends Kate. Kate is an extroverted character; as the “new friend” of Ana, she wants to get her out of her shell. They both apply for the college newspaper/magazine jobs. There they meet Jessie Rodriguez (not Jose, see later), a second year art student, who is the magazines “photoreporter”. The three of them will become close friends over this first semester. Ana finally met people, who can understand her and she gradually becomes more comfortable around others and starts to socialize.

2.) Kate Kavanagh

Comes from an upper-middle class family. She’s fun and outgoing, but she has her own snarky moments. She can also be selfish, lazy and immature sometimes. She’s studying literature, because she’s still struggling wich path she has to choose for her future. Her dorm roommate is Ana. At first, she wanted a close ally and “yes-man” all to herself, who can be dragged wherever she wanted to. After they joined the magazine group, Ana and Kate slowly developed mutual respect towards eachother and became friends at the end of the semester. 

Life goal: to find her own path in life and live full to the max.

3.) Jessie Rodriguez

Note: Honestly, i think E.L.James created a cardboard latin-american character to foil Grey as a satellite love interest in her series. That’s why I made his name into Jessie, instead of Jose - but really, it’s just a slight symbolic alternative.

Jessie is a second year art student. His father originates from Mexico. Jessie wats to become a professional photographer, but he has intrests in other arts such as drawing and sculpting. He’s also huge comic book and movie fan and often tells dirty jokes, but all in all he’s generally a nice person. He has a huge crush on one of his teachers. The girls (Ana and Kate) often make jokes about it.

Life goal: To become a famous and rich artist.

4.) Christian Grey

36 year old, billionaire playboy, Christian Grey is a famous alumn of Ana and Kate’s college.

He is handsome, dashing, charming, rich etc. Grey was just appointed to CEO of his family’s business after his father’s resignment. (Telocom and technology)

Grey grew up in a wealthy family: his father, CEO of the above mentioned company, his mother, a lawyer. He has two younger siblings: Mia and Elliot, who live the lifes of spoiled rich brats. (The Grey kids are NOT adopted!)

Life goal: To maintain his wealth and social position, or to “get, what he wants”.

Christian’s personality should remain the same: he shows signs, that he’s a sociopath. He’s manipulative and has little to no respect to other people’s feelings or personal space.

Main conflict:

Ana, Kate and Jessie are working on the Grey interview for the college magazine. Grey is a famous alumn and is invited to the annual college days as guest. Christians behaves normal, yet charming, friendly and funny. He also invites the three students for a drink. Christian is intrigued by Ana’s shy presence, he becomes somewhat obsessed. He slowly manipulates her into a “relationship”.

Alternate story no. 1.)

Coming of age story of Ana, or how Ana became stronger character. How Ana overcomes her fears and ends her relationship with the abuser.

Alternate story no. 2.)

Thriller/investigation

- Christian is also a serial killer, who kills women with low self-esteem out of sexual pleasure

- with the help of his money, his mom (she’s a lawyer) and his social status he feels protected

- Ana becomes the “martyr” of the plot

- Kate becomes the main protagonist, who “investigates” Ana’s “accidental” death

Well, that was my 50sog version in a nutshell. I won’t write a story about it at all, because a.) I’ve never written fanfiction of anything copyrighted out of respect and because I’m a lawyer and I have alternate thoughts about using other people’s characters and elements b.) I don’ like 50sog, so I won’t use my free time for something I don’t like

Finally! One year ago I asked my Mom to make me a yarn/needle punch picture. When she was younger, she made some yarn punch pictures. She told me, that the process is very easy, but it needs patience and a lot of free time. So, after a year, she finally made it. I love it! Thanks Mom! Love You! Update

So, it’s been six months and I’m still uneployed. Life sucks? No. I have plenty of time to organize my shit. Plus I have tons of ideas for novels and stuff. And of course I can go out with my friends. (Who are still studying or still unemloyed, living in my area.) I will be posting some ideas in the future and I hope I can put my life on a good track. Oh and btw. I joined twitter...
