Welp, now I wish their was something with the premise of: RW lore otherwise completely intact, but the scugs now have a modern society.

I find modern AUs too canon divergent to enjoy them. Like people will strip everything interesting and unique about the world of Rain World for the sake of putting the characters in a boring, modern setting. I have seen people just make iterators normal people and the slugcats being just regular cats, or if it focuses on the slugcats, they would just make them normal furry characters, and like-how is that fun and interesting??? I'm genuinely struggling to see the appeal
