It's here — the polyamproud polyamory flag vote has begun! My thoughts so far:
I'm glad that each finalist flag has a different design concept. It's good that we're not choosing between just differently colored 3/5/7 striped flags.
I like how two of the designs leave room for people to place their preferred symbol in!
I've seen multiple comments online expressing not liking any of the designs. I think that should have been an option to vote for, so we could get an indication of how many people feel that way!
I've also seen comments expressing frustration over the limited selection. On one hand I agree — many people had put in effort to submit their designs and I would've loved to see them all! On the other hand, I know that that will make voting less optimal. That's because the votes would be much more spread out, and so the winner will be selected by a smaller majority and therefore by a smaller part of the community.* **
[* A solution to that can be to do elimination rounds where we vote multiple times, and after each time the flags that didn't garner enough votes get eliminated from the next vote. But that will make the process much longer and will run the risk of people losing interest over time. Bottom line is I think the way it ended up being makes sense, even if it means making some sacrifices.]
[** But I would love for polyamproud to post the designs that didn't make it! Maybe after the vote is concluded.]
It could be great to see the voting figures at the end — how many people voted, from how many countries.
Lastly I'm left wondering how accepting the community will be to the winning design, considering a not insignificant number of people are frustrated. I guess in the end it maters less which design wins the vote, and more which flag(s) the community will actually end up using in the long run.

Sometimes I feel like breaking down asking myself "why is everything so hard for me?" "Why can't I do the same things as other people?" "Why do I need to struggle with the stupidest of things?" But then I remember autism is a ✨️disability✨️ and I am, in fact, disabled

We need to talk more about Autistic, ADHD and Neurodiverse Joy
As a kid I felt hopeless because the only narrative you ever see about Autism is the loneliness, the otherness, the bullying and the struggle. I never once saw anything about the joys of having autism or that autistic people can actually have nice things in life. It was all doom and gloom. The world tells autistic and neurodiverse children that their lives are going to suck because of the way their brain is, because of something they can't control and had no say in, and it's wrong
I'm Autistic and I fell in love. I'm Autistic and I have friends, good friends, who love me back. I'm Autistic and I do feel joy and togetherness and peace. THAT is the message we need young Neurodiverse kids to hear. No more shows about our hardships, more stories about our joy please

There are valid ways to tell when someone is lying. For example, maybe you notice minor details about their story that don't add up.
But their inability to make eye contact or keep a straight face is not one of them.

I don't remember where I heard this, so not mine.
But, for everyone who says "oh, everyone does 'insert neurodivergent trait here'"...
Everyone urinates, too. Everyone coughs sometimes, sniffles, gets an upset tummy, feels poorly etc.
But if you're doing it all the time, every day, it's no longer normal.
So, no. You also "sometimes rocking" or "sometimes jumping at noises" doesn't make you like me. It makes you a person, too.
But you're not neurodivergent.

My 10yo had a couple events at our place today and one friend was going to be coming for both, with five hours in between. To save his parents driving, I offered that he could stay through, but explained when I made the offer that my kids need a break from social time or they'll get drained, so could their kid bring a book or something over for some alone time in the middle of the afternoon for my introverts to recharge? His parents happily complied and I've been chatting with the kids about it. "I'm worried that you guys are having a ton of fun right now because your battery is still charged, so you're not taking a break—I want to make sure that you don't crash and need a recharge right before the party starts tonight, because at that point you won't be able to take your break to recharge." Both kids very seriously listened, agreed, and have been having their chill time separately. One's reading and one's watching YouTube.
Can you fucking IMAGINE learning this kind of energy management, which is so important for neurodivergent people to avoid shutdown/meltdown, before your 30s?

I've discovered the best (personal) example of the difference between a neurotypical interest and an autistic special interest.
Was discussing the show Inside the Mind of a Cat at work. They are neurotypical and know I'm autistic.
I got very very excited when they mentioned they watched it, but they just shrugged and said:
"I found it boring. I like cats, so already knew all the information."
And that floored me. Because cats are a huge special interest of mine and I adored that show, even though I, too, learnt nothing new.
And that's when I realised: That's the major difference!
I liked it because my special interest is a constant want of interaction with the topic. I want to learn new things and rehash old things. I just want to interact with it! I am 1000% invested in this topic. It makes me happy.
They wanted something new, full stop. Rehashing old knowledge is boring because it wasn't catching their interest. There is no constant investment in the topic, so old info brings no joy.
