I’ve decided I want to start making weirdly specific playlists on spotify. So here’s the first: it’s cold and rainy, and you’re in bed next to someone you love (or wish you were)

its the year 1997 you’re a teen at the shopping center. you’re warm in your jean jacket. you end up in the video store after a long day of shopping ur deciding what vhs to take home. as you walk through the aisles of movies you can hear the radio playing on the store’s speakers. 

its past midnight you’re on the train and you’re heading home after a concert. you sit down with your head against the window. you’re still buzzed with energy from the show yet you can feel the tiredness coming over you. you pop ur headphones in and stare out the window as thought after thought crosses your mind

you’re in the midst of a hard time. you’re plagued with stressful thoughts that you keep choosing to ignore. you have the strongest urge to change everything about yourself. you want something new. you’re home alone and you decide what you need is a change. you cut your hair. you get out hair dye. maybe this is what will comfort you for now.

the few minutes right before you drift off to sleep. your thoughts are filled with the person you are infatuated with. plagued with scenarios you daydream about all day. you lay there and think about what holding their hand would be like. what it would be like to be loved by them. although it may never happen this is enough for now. you listen to music as you fall asleep to the thought of them

you’re a kid in the 2010s. you’re outside playing in the backyard. you sit on the chalk stained pavement and you can hear the radio playing from inside. you distractedly sing along to the songs as you enjoy the warm summer air and a orange creamsicle. you think about the shows you’ll watch on the tv later. you’re a child with no complete worries. these are the songs that’ll bring you nostalgia later in life.

playlist ideas

catching feelings for anyone that shows me the smallest ounce of affection? it’s more likely than you think.

it’s early in the morning and you’re chilling with the person that you absolutely love. there is no sense of nervousness, just a sense of warmth that they will forever love you and you with them. 

crying alone in your bed at the middle of night. tears keep coming out and for some strange reason you can’t understand why you’re feeling this way. why must this happen? 

the feeling at the peak of a coming of age movie. some topics that this playlist reminds me of: discovering that the group that you’re going to at prom aren’t as fun or you’re dancing alone in the rain not caring what happens next

running to catch the train and the adrenaline is coming over your body. sure enough you can even hear the sound of your heartbeat in your ears as you attempt to sprint to the entrance.

music that fits an anti trump mood, both lyrically and musically 

music for people who relate to lorde albums and just live in rainy cities while being a young adult who has no clue what the future holds

you’re in your first apartment and it’s too small and it’s raining and you’re a little stoned, but your succulents and the sound of raindrops hitting the window are gently comforting

you are cursed to live in an abandoned church that has been overgrown with vines and filled with damp earth. you spend your days with sun-bleached deer bones and your nights with the ghost of a young man, whose lips are always just barely too cold on your neck

you’re twelve years old, and you and your weird but likable neighbor have decided to go on a road trip (i.e. however far you can get on your bikes before it gets dark and your mom calls you home because the pizza’s here), so you blast your boombox as you ride off down the road

it’s 1988 and you’re at a shitty house party and not feeling it, so you make eye contact with the girl who likes the smiths a little too much and decide to go make out with her in the bathroom

it’s midnight and you’re drinking shitty coffee in a rundown diner that’s nearly empty. you think this place may only exist after 11PM. in fact, you think this place may not really exist at all

had to jump on this trend

you’re hanging out with the cutest girl in the whole wide world, driving around in a pink cadillac convertable, ignoring the male gaze, and eating cherry popsicles on a warm summer day. you think you finally know what joy feels like

having a picnic on a hill filled with wildflowers, you feel the sudden urge to cry from both an underlying sadness and an overwhelming appreciation for the beauty of queen anne’s lace and daisies

you’re parked at the beach at 3:30 in the morning on a warm summer night, and you feel weirdly nostalgic for a time you weren’t alive for 

you’re driving in a car filled with friends with the windows rolled down, and though it’s never possible to fully leave your sadness behind, in that moment, everyone is smiling and everyone is happy, and there seems to be blue and yellow glow over everything

you walk deep into the woods and flop onto your back into a snowbank, staring up at the bare trees and falling snowflakes as the sky gets dark, feeling as if you could lie there forever

you’re riding the subway late at night, listening to an old ipod classic. the car is dimly lit, it’s empty, and it seems as if the train will never stop, but you’re not going anywhere in particular
