it's 9:04am on a Sunday and i've already done so much
This month we're creating new routines and sticking to them! If you're on TikTok, I'm sure you've heard of the new "that girl" trend.. waking up at 5am, drinking your greens, working out, showering, making coffee, getting dressed, reading and journaling, and making a to-do list for the day all before you start your 9-5 job from home.
This is not that. This is inspired by #ThatGirl, but it's not that strict or overwhelming.
Instead of waking up at 5 and working out for an hour and going on a "quick trip to Trader Joe's at 8:02am" like I've seen in some of these videos, it's much much simpler.
Set an alarm for 7 or 7:30. When the alarm goes off, sit up. Drink some water. Don't snooze the alarm and sleep for "5 more minutes." You've conditioned yourself to snooze your alarm and your reward is more sleep. What we're trying to do by sitting up and drinking water as soon as your alarm goes off is conditioning ourselves to a new reward. Instead of snoozing the alarm and sleeping as a reward, we're waking up right away and rewarding ourselves with starting our day on time. No more rushing out the door at 8:34am or logging on at 8:59am.
After you sit up and drink your water, try to avoid scrolling through Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok, a couple minutes on social media can very easily become a half-hour, and then you're back at square one, rushing out the door. Instead, get out of bed and start your new routine. Put on some nice music that gets you ready for the day (I've recently created a new playlist for this sole reason and it's really helped me wake up and enjoy my mornings). Wash your face, brush your teeth, and get dressed. Stretch for 10 minutes. Or do yoga. Either way, move your body. Make some coffee and breakfast. Read while you eat. Do the dishes after you eat.
Make your to-do list. Follow the Big Three Bonus Three Method. This is a method I created and started using over a year ago and it's really helped me avoid feeling overwhelmed by all the things I have to do. Your Big Three and 3 things you MUST complete by the end of the day, and should probably be the first three things you do for the day. Your Bonus Three and 3 additional things you could do that have upcoming deadlines, but it isn't the end of the world if you don't get to them.
After you make your to-do list, scroll through social media for a bit. You deserve it. That's your reward.
Then stick to this routine. Wake up at the same time every day. Go to bed at the same time every night. Enjoy the bookends of your day without distractions. This is your YOU TIME. Mornings should not be stressful; they're the start of your day. You want to set a positive tone for the day.

If you have a similar morning routine, or this post has inspired you, let me know! MORNING COMMUTE PLAYLIST

Job Search
In just 100 days I will be graduating from my Masters program and officially have M.Ed at the end of my name. After 2 very difficult years of grad school amidst a pandemic, I’ll be able to finally say, “I made it!”  I’ve been working towards my degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs and my goal is to move from Massachusetts to Colorado for full-time work. I’m currently in the process of looking for work, but I’m struggling to find jobs in my specific area of interest.
If there’s anyone that is aware of any job openings at colleges/universities in #Colorado, please don’t hesitate to send me a message!
Also, any tips on cover letters, CV/Resume-writing, personal statements, and interviewing would be helpful.
Connect with me on LinkedIn!

I’m very fortunate to be in a program that offers courses like LGBTQ+ Issues in Higher Education. Last semester, I took Multicultural Issues in Higher Ed and both of these classes have opened my eyes and offered an opportunity for much reflection and discussion. These are just two of the textbooks I’m reading in my LGBTQ+ Issues course this semester.
What are you reading this semester?

this pandemic will end and you’ll claim the window seat in your favorite cafe, stand in a crowd at a concert, visit a museum and make crappy art in the park. sometimes things feel like they’ll go on forever, sometimes bad things feel heavier than good things, sometimes life feels like it’s slowing down and all you’re doing is waiting for the full stop— but just because this hopelessness is all that you’re feeling right now, doesn’t mean that it’s all there is. there’s always more and you will experience that, and you will feel alive again.

tips to get your life back on track after a breakdown™
sleep. your body needs to rest. the average panic attack takes as much energy as running a half-marathon. let yourself rest. take a 20 minute nap. any longer and you’ll hit your REM cycle, and you’ll wake up worse off. after, you’ll feel so much better.
clean something. literally anything. a plate, a drawer, the whole mf bathroom. it doesn’t matter how much or how little. it’ll make you feel more in control, and it’ll make your surroundings more appropriate for recovery.
get some fresh air. even just opening your window for a few hours will help. if you feel up to it, take a walk. take your dog. pick some flowers. cloudgaze. even just sit in your garden for a bit. your body will thrive off of non-stale air.
eat and drink. I know for some people, myself included, this is Hard. it’s alright if all you can manage is a granola bar, or some cereal. anything is progress and will fuel your body. drink water if you can, but anything apart from alcohol will hydrate you.
take a shower. I have clinical depression. have done since I was 12. I know how hard it is to take a shower. but it fucking helps. if you don’t do anything else off this list, do this. it’ll help more than you know.
talk to someone. I can’t stress this enough. humans are social creatures! we crave interaction. even the most introverted introvert needs to talk to someone. call your mom. text a buddy. skype your brother. chat to your local cashier. anything !! you’ll feel less alone, and hopefully get some good serotontitty flowing.
do something fun! same as above, it’ll make u feel so much bette, and provide a distraction. some good options are writing, drawing, watching a movie, dancing - anything you enjoy!
be kind to yourself. it’s okay if you relapsed, or if you had a bad day, or anything else. treat yourself gently. you wouldn’t so harsh to a friend in your situation. it’s gonna be okay.
if you can’t do all of these, it’s okay. there are better days ahead. this, too, will pass.

I got exposed to someone with COVID
So now I’m alone in quarantine housing for 2 weeks. There’s not much to do other than homework and work.. and of course we have a long weekend.. I’ts only day 3 and I’m starting to get really antsy and anxious.
For those of you know me, know that I make a lot of playlists. So I need your help: comment song suggestions or artists & I’ll add them to my playlists. I have playlists for just about any mood/genre/style (and if you’re looking for some playlist to follow, I have a whole post here!) please comment, I’ll listen to EVERY song suggested -- i have nothing but time.

I’ve been feeling so good about this semester. I finally feel like I have a handle on things, especially when it comes to working two jobs while being in a masters program. I’m good at my job; it’s rewarding. I’m finally beginning to feel that sense of happiness I had when I first decided this was the field I wanted to be in.
I’ve been waking up early every morning (which is a big deal for me) and even making my bed before sitting at my desk and working 9-5. I’ve been eating during every meal and staying really organized. I feel good. I feel content and normal and happy and actually feeling. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what changed, but there was definitely some sort of shift in the universe. The energy is lighter. I’m hopeful.
[comment your favorite song(s) to play in the background while you get work done and i’ll add it to my study playlist]

Okay, so you’ve been called smart all your life. As a kid, you were one of the smartest in your class. Maybe you could read at a much higher level than your peers, or you could fly through multiplication drills like they were nothing. Then, you get to high school and suddenly you’re surrounded by lots of people who were ‘gifted kids’. None of what made you ‘special’ seems all that important now. Your work is actually challenging, and it’s actually requiring effort.
If you’re experiencing this, just know that so many students have gone through the same thing. Maybe it happens in high school, maybe college. But a lot of us who were considered gifted as kids suddenly run into this and it challenges our entire identity. It can be paralyzing, but it’s 100% possible to overcome it and succeed! I’ve compiled a few tips for ex-gifted kids dealing with impostor syndrome and self-doubt. I’m not a therapist, psychologist, or any sort of education expert. I’m just speaking to my own experiences, and I welcome any input from others who have insight into this as well!
1. Understand that working hard does not mean you aren’t intelligent. If something doesn’t come naturally to you, that’s not a reason to give up. Believing that people can do things “just because they were born with a talent for it” is only going to hurt you. It’s not true! People may have natural aptitudes for things, but hard work is involved even for the smartest or most talented people. You are capable of learning anything, and you don’t have to be “good at it” right away to do so.
2. Comparison will kill you. You are your only competition. Focusing on how you rank with other students, and comparing yourself to your classmates is going to exhaust you. By focusing on others, you can’t put your full energy into focusing on your work and yourself. You belong. Even if you struggle with your work, you belong. Focus on your own self-improvement and doing your best.
3. Don’t focus on the goal, focus on your current actions. If you’re always thinking about the future, and about whether you’ll get into that school or that program or win that award or get that scholarship, you’re not using that time to get work done. Don’t worry about college applications, just do your homework. Focus on what you are doing now to reach your goals so you can apply to schools with confidence later.
4. Your grades may not reflect intelligence, but they do reflect work ethic. Don’t let others convince you that grades mean nothing. They sure as hell mean a lot to colleges, and thinking that you should “reject the current education system” is not going to harm anyone but yourself. If you don’t feel like you’re learning anything in your high school classes, that’s all the more reason to want to get into a university that will challenge you. If you put effort into your work, it will not let you down. Your hard work will be reflected on your transcript. Don’t lose focus.
5. Talk to someone. Let people know if you’re struggling. It can be hard to feel like you aren’t allowed to identify as “smart” or to feel pressure to constantly compete and improve. I went to a highly competitive high school that pushed kids to cope in dangerous ways. This is not healthy and not okay. If you’re feeling overwhelmed you need to find healthy coping mechanisms. Speak with someone you trust and don’t let yourself spiral. Don’t try to self medicate. Your well being is always more important than your grades. Period.
6. Enjoy yourself. School may seem like hell, and you may feel like it will never end and you’ll always be stressed and worried. But high school is only four years, and you can do things during that time that you probably won’t ever again. Take advantage of things that seem fun, even if people think they’re nerdy or weird. Try and remind yourself that you’re lucky to have your education and you have the power to do great things with it. Don’t lose sight of your own ability and your bright future!
