A year in the life - Chapter 11: An important decision

The sharp chime of the doorbell pierced through Rebecca's head, jolting her awake. Her temples throbbed with an unforgiving rhythm, and the thought of opening her eyes was unbearable. She rolled over with a groan and buried her head under the pillow, in a futile attempt to block out the world. Whoever was at the door could wait, or, better yet, leave. It was probably just an unwelcome solicitor anyway.

Unclear memories of the previous evening began to surface through the fog of her hangover. She’d gone out with Keeley and Barbara, and they’d had a great time, but she also remembered a lot of alcohol; far too much alcohol.

A year in the life - Chapter 10: Drunk confessions

Jelka started travelling to Richmond with Matthijs more and more frequently when she didn’t have school, especially after Kristi announced that she was leaving for a six-month business trip around Africa. It wasn't the first time that she’d travelled far away for work reasons, but she’d never gone for such an extended period of time.

Jelka didn't even really know how long six months was until her parents explained that she couldn’t see her mother until next spring. Despite being used to not spending much time with Kristi, that news saddened Jelka. Matthijs tried to spoil her a little bit more in the following days to cheer her up and avoid tantrums. Rebecca was glad to help him, buying Jelka gifts and bringing her to her favourite Amsterdam ice cream shop for a girls’ night out.

A year in the life - Chapter 9: The new season

Now that Jelka knew about them, Rebecca visited Matthijs in Amsterdam more frequently, so that they could spend more time together but he wouldn’t neglect his daughter.

The first time she returned, she booked a room in the same hotel she’d stayed at the previous time because they still had to figure out how to manage things with Jelka. However, after Matthijs put the girl to bed, they started cuddling and kissing and ended up having sex in his bedroom, being careful to be as quiet as possible behind the curtain that closed it. Rebecca fell asleep there and in the early morning went back to her hotel room to change clothes.

They decided it was pointless for her to keep doing so, and from that moment on she started sleeping in the houseboat. Matthijs installed a sliding door to divide his bedroom from the rest of the house, so they could have a little more privacy.

Miracles happen (when you least expect them)

She was thinking about all her friend’s unusual behaviours when suddenly she put together the information she had gathered in the last few minutes. She stopped mid-movement and, without any warning, asked, “Do you and Thijs use protection?” 

“Protection?”

“Yeah, I mean during sex.” 

Rebecca was used to Keeley's weird queries after years of friendship and didn't question the reason for that one. 

“Well no, actually we don't. We had stopped after a few weeks of dating since we weren’t seeing other people. And I stopped taking the pill some years ago when I divorced.” 

Keeley looked at her without saying anything. She could only think about one thing and couldn’t understand how Rebecca hadn’t considered it even for a second. 

“Why are you asking?” Rebecca prompted her when the silence started to feel uncomfortable. 

“Babe…  I think you should take a pregnancy test,” Keeley finally said. 

Rebecca almost choked on her own saliva as her eyes opened wide, “Keeley, you know I can't…”
