Are you SHITTING me?! I’ve personally worked on a Lake Sturgeon stocking program, and if you think the populations A. fulvescens have recovered then you are either willfully ignorant or have suffered a recent blow to the head!

For those who don’t know, lake sturgeon used to be so abundant that they practically choked rivers during spawning runs, and now they literally would not exist without stocking programs. Even for sturgeon they take a LONG time to mature (10-14 years!) and so many of their historical spawning grounds are inaccessible to them, so it’s not as if they can bounce back in a few years!

Anyone who seriously believes that these fish aren’t endangered probably also thinks that wolves and white rhinos are doing okay.

I know of a few places in Michigan where you can keep a sturgeon, but it’s like, single digits of fish total. Per year. Populations are better in some places, but that’s saying SO. VERY. LITTLE.
