i wonder what quirrel's job actually was

we get some snippets in game that yes, he was an apprentice of sorts to monomon & knows many things about hallownest in general -- but overall, we have no idea what actual things he may have researched

most fan interpretations of this i see make him very culturally aware in mostly a socio-economic-political way. like he's done some sort of political science degree. it makes sense due to his wide knowledge of the kingdom's intertwined politics and society.

however, he still seems to have some sort of appreciation for the physical landscape of hallownest? take the blue lake for example, him wanting to see the source of the rain or his comments on the hot springs.

everything could simply just be seen as a thirst for knowledge, but then again i think quirrel is much of an observer as he is as someone who just wants to learn: it's also much about experience to him.

therefore, putting everything i have together, quirrel simply must be:

Honestly I can't think of any specifics rn hdggjndg I just know I am a Nishikiyama Understander. I think one off the top of my head is that yes, he's clearly more emotional than others, but he is not remarkably so and he is NOT a 'crybaby'. Like every time he's cried on screen it's been for very understandable reasons and in highly emotional situations.

Or the idea that him not reciprocating Reina's feelings is like, an inherent character flaw??

so there was this pub, the crooked house or the siden house, where im from that was kinda famous for being the "wonkiest pub in britain". its been there since 1765 (it was originally a farmhouse) and let me tell you, the inside was some of the coolest shit ive seen. it was fucking bostin.

but four days ago, it burnt down. now its nothing but rubble, and its being treated as an arson for the investigation.

and just,,, im so gutted. i have that kind of sadness where you feel empty inside because this was our pub. we're an impoverished area and a lot of our country laughs at us for the way we speak, but we're proud of our local culture and history.

honestly the siden house represented us; we're a little wonky bunch with our dialect the most close to old english and banding together like misfits in a movie.

but now its just gone. its one of the few tranklements of our history we get to hold and its just fucking gone, at someones hand. it was probably new developer who just bought it because its the cheapest way to clear a lot.

and i ay even angry at whoever it was, im just sad. as a brit, i hold no pride for my country and the history of it. but i am a proud yam yam, and right now, it just hurts.

You awoke once in a dream. You were alone in the middle of a field of crops, you were dazed and confused, spending a few minutes trying to get your bearings before wandering around the field. While wandering you eventually came upon a house.

Approaching the house, you see a woman sitting on the porch. You hesitate for a second but decide to continue forward albeit much more cautious. Now that you're nearer you see her more clearly and hear her humming a tune, your breath hitches as you recognize her.

You pick up your pace, trying to reach her faster. You notice that she wasn't wearing her usual outfit, instead her wear was a green dress that looked to be embroidered with gold with a crown resting upon her head and wings that shone like gold.

She greeted you and asked for your name when you were finally close enough. You were confused as you two were close friends but you answered the question regardless. She said that it was a nice name then mentioned how she wished she remembered hers.

Confused, you ask her about it. She went silent for a moment before speaking.

"I have been called many names throughout the years, the lady of sunflowers, Santa Perla being some of the most common but none of them felt right. The name that I feel is the most correct however is how a man I once knew uttered it" She said

You pause for a bit before asking this 'lady of sunflowers' what that is. She gave you a look before answering

i think the thing i’m disliking the most about the amazon show so far is how it flattens out all the elven and dwarven (and human too, to a less pronounced extent) cultural complexity of tolkien’s world? as someone whose engagement with the legendarium pre-reading the silm was mostly through the movies, one of the best surprises i had while reading it was learning that elves have ethnicities! they have different cultures, they have different languages, they have inter-group tensions and messy history that fuels it, it made them feel so much more like actual people than the aura uniform wisdom and unchanging perfection the movies gave off, and though the old man didn’t give the dwarves nearly as much attention i know he sketched out several different dwarven cultural groups, multiple of whom show up across his work

and the show just... isn’t depicting any of that? it’s presenting the elves as ‘the elves’, with one high king, one war against sauron, one grove where they honour their heroes. granted, i’ve only watched two episodes, but the fact that we haven’t had a hint that there are any elves who aren’t ambiguously noldosindarin is... concerning. it’s a little more implicit with the dwarves (at least to the extent i’ve seen) but the mere fact that the king of khazad-dûm could potentially banish elrond from ‘all dwarven lands’, as if there were no dwarven realms outside of the misty mountains, says a lot about the assumptions behind the writing

sure, you could say all that internal elf drama would be too much for a casual audience to keep up with, but half our protagonists are elves! if there was ever a time to discuss their different cultures and worldviews and opinions of each other, you’d think it’d be here, if nothing else to add texture to the world and make the characters feel like actual people! as it is, though, all the elves in the show feel more like the impression someone who only knows this world through its cultural reputation would have of them, rather than the complex, flawed, lifelike cultures tolkien actually wrote. to an extent the whole show feels like that - middle-earth-y, without being middle earth

The way a lot of people genuinely think disabled ppl are faking it for x y z reason is crazy to me... what? I've seen a lot of people say that it's for money/pity but the thing is that when u start to think like that, you'll eventually become distrustful of EVERY disabled person u meet whether they're "faking" or not which is incredibly dangerous for obvious reasons (AKA: people actually fucking dying), and u end up harming so many people for what? for a few cases of people who wanted money? it's ridiculous to me & it's not to say that I myself don't hold ableist views because I have had to mentally slap myself sometimes when I catch some insane thought (to some extent I think everyone has ableist views just from the way society is which is bleak as hell), but it is more the fact that it seems like such a popular point of view and most people are just like "yeah just the way it is!" ?? what ???

as far as we are aware, the objects in bfdi have always existed together in that grassy plane of existence. and they didn’t have anyone else, it was just the 20 of them. this is emphasized with stuff like golfball’s tips and tricks book being millions of years old and stuff. the bfdi characters only ever had eachother— thats all they would’ve known they’re whole life.

leafy breaks this mold a bit by being able to travel to yoyleland, but those were still the only people she ever knew. and even if she might be not the best-friend (example number one bubble) she very much cared for all of them. i could even say she loved them all to a fair extent, they were all she really knew.

and via one mistake made in petty rage, she loses everything she ever knew and her whole identity. her existence revolved around being friendly, about always being the nice one. and a thief doesn’t really fit that definition, does it? the only people shes ever known try to permanently kill her, people who she helped throughout the first season. she lost everything. it all falls apart infront of her

and she forgave them. and i believe that leafy truly is a good object-person at heart. even if she kinda is an asshole sometimes.
