After weeks of merely having Diluc’s letters as your only company when you were out there somewhere in the world, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that your husband would be trapping you beneath him in the sheets once you’ve finally arrived in the manor.

“Mmph— mm— D–Diluc—“ you pant out heavily, as you pull away from his lips for air. Diluc towers over you, his disheveled state no more better than yours, as his wild fiery hair cascades down his back and curtains on both side of his head.

You watch how his breathing is ragged, and observe how his strong arms are keeping you. There’s a sign - an implication - that your man neither has intentions of letting you go, nor giving away or taking your attention away for granted. He simply has no plans of doing so. Not when you’re finally here, after sleepless nights of not being beside you.

So handsome, you think, as Diluc’s eyes are lowered halfway and cheeks flushed a deeper scarlet. You are aware of how he’s trying to resist right now, and you are, too. 

But seriously. “Relax, love,” you coo at him, and press a hand on his chest - preventing him from dipping his head to kiss you senseless. “I’m not going anywhere. I promise - I’m yours—mmph—“

And even if you’re the only one who has the power to keep him still, have the power to make him listen to you and only you because you’re his lover, you have no match for his strength. You have no match for a husband who has yearned badly for his absent wife.

He crashes his lips again with yours, and compared to the previous kisses, this one is more passionate. More wild. Diluc’s pouring all his love into the kiss, and you’re not sure if you’ll be able to take it all.

Because when Diluc Ragnvindr loves, oh, he loves. He loves tremendously.

Despite being with him for a long time, you still have to get used to his sudden affections for you. After making you say yes and putting a ring on your finger, his love only grew. His love only intensified—and it will continue to overwhelm you as the years pass.

You raise a hand to dig your nails on his back when you feel Diluc’s tongue tangle with yours in a dance. He swallows up your small moans, and as he ravishes you, with his hands slowly starting to roam everywhere, you attempt to push him away.

“D–Diluc, wait—“ For three seconds, you’ve succeeded, but then he grasps your wrists and pins it on the bed. You gasp when Diluc meets your lips again with a loud smack, and your chest bursts with more warmth. Oh. He’s so needy.

And as much as you want to indulge his whims, you’re ever so curious to his… fervent actions. And you’re only human. You need oxygen. 

“D–Diluc…” You murmur, still out of breath, when he separates from you only so briefly. The man finally gives you mercy and allows you to talk - but you know that this will be temporary. There will be more to come. 

The man caresses your cheek, and by that, you notice that there’s a string of saliva between your mouths when he wipes it away. Oh.

You blink at that, and embarrassingly ask, “W-what’s gotten into you…? I’m not going anywhere, you know.”

Diluc doesn’t meet your gaze. Instead, he continues his ministrations - he drags his hand from your cheek down to your shoulder and pinches the strap of your camisole. He stares at your lips and you feel your stomach flutter as you register that it’s a look of hunger and desire. 

“Diluc…?”

He shuts his eyes tightly for a moment, before releasing a sigh through his nose. Finally, his red hues meet yours, and you still. It’s so intense.

“Forgive me,” He says, timidly. “I did not - I did not manage to control myself, but—“

He glances at the strap of your shoulder again, and slides it down. You catch him gulp, and your heart pounds in your chest from the anticipation.

“I have waited for too long, and I - the sight of you finally coming home to me… I gave in.” Diluc confesses. “I have missed you. Terribly so.”

He slowly buries his head on your exposed shoulder, and you shudder when his heating face makes contact with your skin.

“I do not wish to part from you. Not now. Not ever.”

words truly cannot convey what a missed opportunity glossing over the letters was. why didn't we get a voice over of Colin reading them? or see what Penelope did with them? he sent all these letters and Penelope didn't reply. He was clearly feeling that! He was carrying that around with him. It's why he tried out a new facade in the first place! You know what would have been such a damn good scene that would do SO much with building the narrative of how much Pen loves him? And how much Polin is about being mirrors to each other?

Sure, build up to it. Can't happen at the start. Not when she's trying to find a husband or after Colin apologized to her. It's not about the immediate satisfaction. It's about showing how Penelope changes and matures and grows as a character that she CAN revisit them, about who Colin is and what he sends, how he sounds, the cadence of his voice when he writes to someone he cares about, discussing subjects he's passionate for. About their connection itself getting stronger or repairing after being frazzled by the LW reveal and the ghosting and the lies and and and

You can't tell me that after they're married, she's not reading his letters. You CANNOT TELL ME that she's laying in that big bed all alone, feeling such distance from him, not recognizing that she had put him in a similar position over the off season. He said and did something that hurt her heart and she froze him out from her affections. SHE said and did something that hurt HIS heart and now he froze her out in turn. When Colin reads HER letters to feel close to her, it's such a beautiful moment of the audience seeing how much he cherishes her.

why don't we get a similar scene with her? because chat, I won't lie, it rubs me the wrong way. It rubs me the wrong way, chat. That he sat down and had a whirlwind of a travel adventure for his final year studying on his grand tour and wrote and wrote and wrote and had NO IDEA why no one was replying and felt that profound loneliness so close to his skin but turned around and blamed himself and we know it because we have THIS fragment of his journal

which in part reads:

After my travels last year when I wrote so much and received very few replies. I am trying out a new personality. A new way of seeing the world and interacting with others. I want to be less needy, less insecure, while still maintaining the core of my vulnerability that makes me who I am.

and chat, I do not understand. I do not get it, chat. Penelope, who criticized him for being fake, who canonically has read parts of his journal, coming across THIS entry? It would break her heart into pieces.

AND I NEED TO SEE IT.

I NEED to see that she cherishes him the way he cherishes her. That she didn't just cast his letters out into the fire in her frustration with him. That she didn't throw him away, even when she was upset. Because he doesn't throw her away when he's upset! And you know what? Even if she did, for us to see her have some remorse for it! She was so hungry to read his journal, and then got letter after letter from him? Of COURSE she's reading those letters! That journal is an insight into his thought process with himself, but the letters are insight into his thought process with her.

And you know what? I want to see her write him letters constantly in the next season. Like a regency equivalent of love letters on post-it notes plastered all up in their house. I want him to wake up to another letter from her even when she slept right beside him that night but had to wake up early for whatever reason so, here, have this letter hand-crafted with her heart in the quill just because. Just because she loves him.

Colin is so good at apologies, namely because they always have actions that follow up to show he's understood what harm he caused and how he's committed to fixing it. And yes, Penelope apologized, but it didn't have much action behind it. I think Penelope NEEDS to understand that part of Colin's insecurities come from her. Her actions. Her lies. Come from that off season where she did not answer him and gave no reason why. Come from saying he loved her and not having her say it back. Colin builds his bridge about her being LW and gets over it largely on his lonesome. We stan an emotionally mature and available man!

But. . .Penelope doesn't have much hand in that. Even when she tells him she wrote about him because she wanted the Colin she knew back. That was a lie. But she can have that Colin back! THROUGH HIS LETTERS!!! Which we should see her read!!!

Anywho, I like to believe that Penelope felt some remorse for their distance and once she knows just how much her not replying hurt him, perhaps via journal entry, one way for her to heal over that harm is to write to him. Why wouldn't she write to him even when they live together? They spent months not doing so. Surely she misses it. And it would be cute. A love language on her part to show him how much she cares. I need Colin to discover that oh she kept them, all those letters he sent. She didn't answer, but I want him to know she read them. I want him to know she likes them. Colin does so much processing on his own, and that's important. But it's okay for her to go 'this thing I did hurt you, and this is how I'll fix it'.

Because look: we all know that an enormous part of Colin's insecurities are because he has been rejected. By his family, by his society, by the one person he believed would never forsake him. He understands why she did, but she still did, and it would do a lot for him to know she didn't just discard him, even if his self esteem isn't great and he'd blame himself alone for the breakdown in communication. And it would do a lot for him to get letters from her again.

Do you KNOW how much shorter their freeze out post-wedding would have been if when he went to get a blanket, he found Penelope reading his letters from the last season? That she kept them? That she keeps them close? Do you KNOW how much that pours into the intimacy between the two of them? Just imagine it

"What are you doing?" "I should think it to be obvious." "Why read them, now?" ". . .because I miss you."

Imagine the parallels. Imagine her delivering 'I miss you' the same way he delivered it. Imagine how conflicted that would make him, pleased and in love but aching and sad all at once. The angst. The romance. The romangst. Think about all we could have!!!

Make all the crossovers you can think of it allows the people like me who only know DC stuff through dpxdc crossover to look up stuff about the people to learn more. go buck wild with all the characters.

Oh you betcha man! My main goal for this blog was to post ideas out of the norm and to add more DC knowledge to the dpxdc fandom. I think Linda Muir costume designer for Nosferatu remake also said in one interview that Thomas is driven to wealth and it’s his downfall. For whatever reason somehow it is now character flaw that doomed him. Making money is bad now.

like, okay. I still think it would be a very classist and uncomfortable decision if the final film had been more like the 2016 draft where Ellen and Orlok did not have a pre-existing bond, and so Thomas going there is more of the first domino. but if they had, these statements would at least make more sense. but the moment Eggers decided to change it so that Ellen and Orlok already knew each other and he already staked a claim over her, that makes Thomas' "wealth motivation" moot.

ORLOK WOULD COME THERE NO MATTER WHAT.

honestly, Thomas doesn't even seem that money-driven in the film. he seems concerned about being in debt, about being of a much lower class, of how fragile his and Ellen's current financial status is.

(especially if you compare him to the incredibly unsubtle Thomas in 2023 who was worse than the 2016 Thomas.)

I find it incredibly uncomfortable that Thomas is the poorest/lowest class character - and his great sin and big character flaw is greed, with the filmmakers acting like his character arc is learning money cannot save him/them. especially considering the historical context of class in Germany/Prussia at the time.

(I would argue that in the film we get, that actually isn't the crux of his character arc, just a part of it. like I said, the actual desire for wealth is rather downplayed compared to the 2016 script and the 2023 remake. also I know that it isn't simply that Thomas wants financial security but that he wants to be wealthy like Friedrich but that is less apparent/important in the film than it is in the 2016 script. and still, again, it feels...uncomfortable, in the historical context and in a modern context.)

okay, maybe this makes sense? the silence particular to conspirators [which had] blossomed from the pale pavilion? kind of weird though...maybe it's related to the next part instead.

he also has an endnote after "courait" which reads

The subject of this verb is le silence particulier. Boulanger uses the inversion to convey stylistically the all-embracing secrecy of the meeting.

this is making me cuckoo. obviously the subject of courait is le silence particulier. what else could it possibly be!! that's the least confusing thing about the sentence!

what is actually confusing is everything that happens after le silence particulier. fleuri is a past participle which i would think is acting as an adjective because there's no auxiliary. what's it modifying? silence? are we saying [le silence [particulier des comploteurs] [fleuri du pavillon pâle]]? and where is the pavillon pâle coming from? this is the first use of the word pavillon. the translator takes it as figurative language, which maybe it is, but i can't figure out what it's doing in the sentence because...

what the fuck is going on with multiple? if it's an adjective modifying pavillon, then shouldn't it (and pavillon!) be plural? like by definition?? the translator has clearly interpreted it this way by the inclusion of "many pale flags". however, i originally interpreted pavillon not as flag (flags have not been mentioned in the story at all so far) but as outbuilding, because on the previous page the pergola was described as having "murs aveugles" which the translator thought was odd because pergolas don't have walls, let alone windowless ones, so he thought maybe it was referring to an outbuilding. also, if multiple is somehow modifying pavillon despite the fact that they're both singular, everything up to and including multiple is a complete sentence. what is des questions and everything after it doing? that's a completely new noun phrase. what verb phrase is it part of?

at one point i was thinking, could multiple be a verb? but it would have to be a verb in the 3rd person singular present indicative (or i guess subjunctive), so it can't parallel courait. there are present indicative verbs in this sentence, but they're both in the subordinate clause after "des questions". the subject would either have to be le silence (which doesn't make sense because courait also has silence as the subject and is in the imparfait) or le pavillon, which doesn't make sense because there's an et in between pavillon and multiple.

i can't say the translation is incorrect because i don't understand the original sentence. but if i start from the translation and try to work backward, the biggest problem i run into isn't "many pale flags" (maybe le pavillon pâle et multiple could be a plural noun phrase stylistically?) but rather "fluttered". he's added a completely new main verb that doesn't exist in the original. and at first i was assuming that he was getting fluttered from fleuri somehow, but i can't make that make sense either semantically or syntactically which maybe is a skill issue, i don't know!!

if we try to line up the correspondences between original and translation by color:

it does seem like fluttered and fleuri have to be related somehow. maybe fleuri is actually supposed to be fleurit (most of the story is in the passé simple)...but if des questions is the subject, it would have to be fleurirent because questions is plural. and it still seems pretty weird not to have a conjuction in the french (he's added "and" in the translation). and where did the "above them" come from in "fluttered above them"? i am losing my mind. what am i missing.

Hi there! First let me apologize for my egregious dereliction of duty when it comes to answering these Asks/Anons. RL stuff has been clogging up my brain and so I just haven't been in the right headspace for answering questions (hence why I temporarily shut off Asks altogether).

To your question, I did indeed see that clip! I think there were SO many interviews happening that day that this somehow passed us all by, but it absolutely is worth talking about...

For those who may be wondering about the subtext here, "nerve curve" (in anatomical terms) generally refers to something related to the curve of the spine. What Michael (shamelessly) seems to be alluding to, then, is him seeing David's bare back and/or his arse.

I mean...good lord. This marks at least the third occasion where Michael has publicly talked about/thirsted over David's body ("slinky hips" twice, and also "sylph-like chest") in the last four years. Whatever filter exists in most human brains clearly does not exist in his, and I suppose we can be thankful for that, but also...wow, Michael.

The truly amazing thing, however, is this wasn't even the only sexual innuendo related to David that Michael made that day, as there was also this gem:

I sometimes wonder how long Michael is going to have to "joke" about him seeing David naked or him having sex with David before people finally pause and go, "Wait a minute..." And the nerve curve moment is so delicious because we can see David actually blushing after Michael says he saw it. They're both so drunk on each other and it is truly gorgeous to watch.

And as much as we miss Michael and David, I don't think it even holds a candle to how much they must miss each other. I can only hope that the studios will get their heads out of their collective asses and come to an agreement with SAG/WGA to end the strikes, because I so thoroughly want more of whatever this is to grace our screens. Please and thank you...
