Ah, fuck.

The Corinthian slipped the knife back into its holster, and when it was hidden, turned to face the kid with a smile. He knew her - not personally, obviously, but from the dreams he’d slithered into, the fears he’d tried to make her confront while she slept. Kids were easier to scare than adults, sure - but his job wasn’t just about inspiring fear, and that was where things got trickier.

Kids weren’t supposed to have to face their fears on their own. The adults in their life were meant to help them with it, and Alan McKie sure as fuck wasn’t helping anyone with anything, least of all his little girl.

“Ah - you must be Molly,” said the Corinthian, like he was pleased to make her acquaintance. “You know, your daddy doesn’t strike me as the type of man that has friends. He was pretty rude to me last time we met. You wouldn’t happen to know where he is, would you? We had an appointment…”

There was something familiar about this man--nothing so specific that the child could place it, but familiar enough that she continued to feel confident enough to keep speaking with him. Perhaps it was his height, the color of his jacket, or the way the low light glinted off of his sunglasses. He was familiar, so therefore he was okay.

“Alan’s working.” She said, parroting the words she’d been told to use. Truthfully, she didn’t know where he was. Anytime she asked, he was always working, so what he did must be very important to take him away so often.

This man seemed friendly enough, so she felt comfortable. And feeling comfortable, meant the questions came quickly. “What’s your name?” She asked. “How come you wear sunglasses at night? Do you like CareBears?”
