Mae-ho Aniseya: Film Noir Protagonist
(Spoilers for The Acolyte)
Tumblr media
As I've said in another post, Mae and Osha are binary opposites in their personalities and motivations.
Mae has a kind of "first child syndrome": a desire to exhibit perfection in the eyes of her mothers, so that they can shower her with praise. She loves being in her community of witches, learning and using the Thread, and indulging in the daily activities of life on Brendok.
She thrives when she is surrounded by her people, but Osha doesn't want the same things, which is something that confuses Mae deeply.
In this scene from Episode 3: Destiny, the two sisters as children talk about what they want:
Tumblr media
MAE: "It isn't fair. I share everything with you, and you hide things from me or run off alone." OSHA: "I want to have my own things." MAE: "Why?" OSHA: "Because I don't want to do everything together all the time." MAE: "But why?" OSHA: "Because we're not the same." [...] OSHA: "Don't you wonder what else could be out there? Besides Brendok?" MAE: "No. Everything I need is here."
For Osha, her arc in The Acolyte has all the trappings of a dark romance. But from Mae's perspective, she's the heroine of her own Film Noir.
Film Noir Themes in The Acolyte
Beyond its aesthetics, Film Noir has three (3) major thematic characteristics with regard to its protagonists:
Its protagonist has an idyllic past where they were happy and life was good;
Their idyllic past is ripped away from them, often violently, in a single moment that they relive again and again in the present;
The inciting incident is an opportunity to reclaim their idyllic past, or if that's impossible, to get justice for what was lost... because to do nothing is to be haunted by it forever.
For example, we can look at the seasonal arc of Veronica Mars (2004): she's a happy high schooler and best friends with Lily Kane, then Lily is murdered and Veronica is ostracised from her former friends, and now she is seeking opportunities to solve her friend's murder, while being haunted by the memories of her.
Tumblr media
Or consider the video game Max Payne (1998): he's a cop with a happy wife and daughter, then his wife and daughter are murdered by drug addicts high on Compound V, now he joins the DEA in an effort to find and destroy the source of Compound V, and finally stop feeling haunted by the memories of his family.
Mae's story is very similar: she was a happy kid living with a family and community that gave her everything she wanted, then the Jedi came and massacred everyone she loved, and now she's joined up with a powerful ally who will teach her to get bloody justice.
Tumblr media
Mae's Fatal Flaw
Mae's biggest problem is that she's impulsive and frequently enters situations without a clear plan. However, this bullheadedness shows that she trusts herself to get out of any situation she finds herself in.
(Qimir once said to Osha "you should learn to trust yourself", but I doubt this is a lesson he had to teach Mae.)
Detractors often say that Mae's motivations don't make sense, or that she's "flip flopping" all the time. But this criticism -- like most criticisms from the fandom menace -- is unfair. Mae's motivations are very clear, and her shifting tactics are done as a response to new information that comes her way.
In Episodes 1 and 2, her goal is two-fold:
Hunt down the four guilty Jedi
Keep The Stranger satisfied in her progress as his apprentice
But in Episode 4 and 5, after she learns that her sister lives, her goal changes to "reunite with Osha." But when Osha refuses to listen to her, Mae's slightly modifies her goal, to "find a way to de-program Osha from her Jedi brainwashing, by exposing Sol."
Viewers that understand what drives Mae see that not flaky; she's adaptive.
The Fatal Lesson of Film Noir
The thing about Film Noir protagonists is that most of the time (not always, but most of the time), their quest for reclaiming their idyllic past is a fool's errand: they either sacrifice a big part of themselves in the attempt, or they learn to heal form the past, let go, and move on.
Mae opts for the former. When she finally succeeds in revealing that Sol has been lying for sixteen years, Osha murders him. Afterward, Osha bargains for Mae's life, which the Stranger accepts but only if he be permitted to erase her memories.
So Mae recaptures her idyllic past by being able to reconnect with her sister... only to lose her sense of self in the process. The quest consumed her.

i love how much they leaned into the noir aesthetic in the first season of veronica mars. it wasn’t as heavy handed in the other seasons which is a shame they should have stuck to their guns

One of the funniest "Hilarious in Hindsight" things for me is with the show Veronica Mars
If you've never watched it's an early 2000s (with a movie in 2014 and one season revival in 2019) noir-aesthetic SoCal mystery series that aired on UPN with a final season on CW. Part of the deal with the CW acquisition (the series was NOT doing well ratings wise) was to simplify the format.
So the first two seasons had one long mystery with season 2's bus crash being particularly convoluted. This is kind of hilarious in the binge era but they felt this made it hard to market the show so it kind of got a soft reboot with the cast in college.
They whittled it down to dividing the season into 3 parts, with the first two following shorter self-contained mysteries and the last handful of episodes having nothing. It was a detective show with no detecting outside of standalone case of the week stuff.
So with no arc (outside of Veronica's father Keith running for the town's Sherriff which wasn't that engaging) they needed some more hooks per the episodes. And they actually did what the kids would have called a Very Special Episode where they got involved with a charity and all!
They even ended the episode-I Know What You'll Do Next Summer-with a bumper for a charity that was involved with the episode's production which was about Ugandan child soldiers.
The charity in question? Invisible Children
They would five years after this episode's airing go on to gain infamy with what was known as their Get Kony 2012 campaign. Yes this is THAT charity
And if you don't know Kony 2012-and therefore why them popping up in a random VM episode years prior is so funny to me-that, my friends, is a story for another time....(or just Google it I'm probably not gonna do another post about this campaign and it's heavily documented)

i think it was djats that brought us together and now it's also glee, something that i love very much, actually. your blog is just perfection. i love every muses you own, even the veronica mars ( who actually brought me to watch the show again, thank you very much. ) we love the writing and love the aesthetic of it all. we also love that we can have thread in the 70's with the djats muses and come back to teen drama with glee, one tree hill as well and maybe veronica mars in the future? well, all that to says that we love what we sees and can't wait to see more.

was that EMILY ALYN LIND spotted down at the shoreline of east hamptons main beach? must just be, MARSEMMY MARS VERNON the TWENTY-FIVE year old BAKER. whenever i hear MIRACLE ALIGNER by THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS it reminds me of them. they are known for being SARCASTIC but they make up for that by being LAID BACK. they have been living in the hamptons for ONE YEAR.
howdy, my name is rian (they/them) and this is mars. if ya like what you see, please feel free to like this and i’ll swing into your pms to plot !!
s  t  a  t  i  s  t  i  c  s
full  name ,  nicknames  :  marsemmy claudia vernon  ,  mars
age  ,  dob  ,  zodiac :  twenty-five  , february 29  ,  aquarius
hometown  :  geneva  ,  ny
gender  ,  pronouns :  cisfemale  , she / they
orientation  :  bisexual , biromantic ( closeted )
height :  5′4″
relationship status :  single
occupation  :  baker
language(s)  spoken  :  english  -  fluent   ,   french  -  fluent
similar  characters  :  shane madej  (  watcher network  )  ,  max mayfield (  stranger things )  ,  sloane peterson  (  ferris bueller’s day off  )  ,  veronica fisher   (  shameless  )  ,  donna pinciotti  (  that 70′s show  )  , audrey horne  (  twin peaks  )
aesthetics  :   being the big sister to many friends against your will, sharp black lines, tattoos poking out from professional crisp white sleeves, burgundy red lips upturned into a knowing smirk, living alone but always having to cook dinner for ten people, being wrapped in the comforting scent of vanilla, purple under eyes giving away yet another sleepless night, high waisted jeans, paint stained sneakers, saying ‘meh, good enough’, having a worrying amount of red wine in your pantry, the bitterest and hottest cup of black coffee you can find, hating your mom but also missing your mom, perpetual eye rolling, ordering a strawberry milkshake at any diner no matter what, watching a group of friends dance while you’re alone.
TLDR: if shane madej had possessed a small woman’s body and liked baking instead of hunting ‘ghosts’. sarcastic bordering on just plain callous sometimes. owns her own baking company where she makes cakes and pastries for rich assholes in the hamptons. mom friend but in the sense of her grabbing ears and calling her ‘kids’ idiots
a  b  o  u  t  (tw: parent death, grieving)
there’s nothing to really say about marsemmy vernon’s short time spent in brooklyn. the first four years, the only years she has when her family was a trio. her mother, an alcoholic and her father, a workaholic pastry chef. her memories are vague, but mars knows well-enough that they weren’t a happy little family in their one bedroom apartment.
her parents try fixing their marriage by moving from their shitty situation. geneva was nice, the house they bought a fraction of the price and triple the size of what they had in the city (though, this is hardly a brag). the couple lasts for another two years before her mother leaves for good this time, not before scarring mars by forgetting to pick her up from her first day of kindergarten at the same time.
markus and marsemmy vernon worked much better as a duo, anyways. it was like they had a mutual understanding. they could only depend on one another, there was no one else in this town to call home except for one another. markus had been a baker since he was a teenager, bouncing around from shop to shop. when his wife left him and his daughter, he knew it was only up to him to finally plant roots to help his family grow. valhalla baking company opened in late 2004, priding himself on creative work and a place for any and all souls to find the same comfort he did in baked goods. mars would hang out at the shop daily after school whenever she could. picture, if you will: a small eight year old stepping onto a step stool to ring someone up. it’s no wonder that mars took to baking just like her father did.
she takes care of herself in her adolescence, and more importantly, their father. the man who raised them, and taught them everything they knew. it was another thing mars was good at; nurturing, being the responsible one of the dynamic duo, even as a teenager. her childhood may have been nonexistent, but she tells herself she wouldn’t have traded it for anything. high school graduation comes and goes, and mars doesn’t go off to college like most of her classmates. instead, she dives headfirst into working full time at the bakery. valhalla is busier than ever after all, becoming a staple business in geneva.her father passed away very suddenly and tragically over a year ago.
according to many news reports, markus verhoff fell asleep at the wheel after a long day of work, and crashed his car. mars doesn’t talk about him much these days, diving headfirst into her work the same way her father did, and going a step beyond: moving the business to the hamptons. after all, he left the business to her in his will. twenty-five years old and a business owner, it weighs heavy on her. but she tries her best.

Hi! I always love your replies to asks ---so eloquent, insightful and thoughtful! Like you and your OTH anon, I always manage to forget just how awful Nathan is those first five or so episodes of the series - it's hard to believe that's the same guy I end up loving just a few episodes later! I was wondering if you watch TVD and which ships and characters you did and didn't like and whether you had UOs about that series. I have a ton, starting with the fact that Forwood is my favorite ship of the series!
Thank you so much!! I'm blushing, honestly. 💛 I don't think my answers are any of those things LOL. Right? Nathan's character development is great. It happens so organically (though maybe slightly rushed) that you barely realize how much of a transformation has occurred until you return to the beginning of the series. I think there was always potential for growth. With or without Haley, I have to believe Nathan would have become a better man. It's just unlikely to have happened during high school. Without Haley, Nathan wouldn't have found the courage to leave his parents behind to live on his own.
I do watch TVD! The first season, anyways. I haven't watched any further yet. I don't think I've seen enough of the series to have any unpopular opinions or hot takes or anything like that. But so far, my favorite characters are Stefan, Elena and Bonnie. Caroline and Jeremy are both interesting, but I'm not super invested in either of them yet. I'm indifferent to Matt. Tyler has potential, but I think he got off to a really rough start in the pilot where he basically forced himself on Vicky? Damon is the one I can't stand. He's just that cliche, creepy, older dickhead to me. I don't find him particularly entertaining or all that compelling. The second we found out his dad was abusive, I lost any interest (and I didn't really have any to begin with) I may have had in him. That might sound cold, but I feel like an abusive dad is the go-to excuse for problematic male characters to be reprehensible people. I think there are cases where it's mostly well done, like with Nathan as well as Logan Echolls on Veronica Mars. But overall, it's not a plot point I love. Shipping wise, the only relationship I care about as of now is Stelena. I think they're adorable together, even though I'm fully aware how the show ends. That's nice! I haven't seen Tyler and Caroline interact much yet, but I've always secretly thought they were an aesthetically gorgeous couple based on edits I've seen of them. :) You can still send me your unpopular opinions or thoughts if you want! I don't mind spoilers.

Logan and Veronica AU Week, Day 1: Vampires/Werewolves ↳ When the Hellmouth Opens
The recent spate of attacks in Neptune all bear the hallmarks of one creature: a vampire. Veronica’s been hunting them for long enough to know the signs. But there’s something off about these attacks. This vampire’s acting differently, and she can’t quite figure out why. Then things get personal, when Veronica’s best friend Lilly becomes the next victim - forcing Veronica to go to the last person she wants to ask for help. Logan Echolls, the only vampire she can’t bring herself to kill.
Logan never thought he’d see Veronica again, but against his better judgment he lets her drag him into her investigation. Partly because he wants to protect her - he has his suspicions about who’s behind these attacks, and he’s rather afraid this is about him - and partly because Veronica’s the first person he’s known for centuries that can make him feel human again, and he can’t bring himself to give that up . .  .
