I was studying for my finals these past few days and I did not expect this cameo in Howard Brown's Music in the Renaissance:

A few more pieces added to the Hellraiser collection. Another Lemarchand Configuration & another Leviathan Configuration to round out the new Hellraiser reboot configuration collection. Added the demon hand and painted the veins and "eye".

People talk a lot about the merits or lack thereof of making one's OCs suffer, of putting them through the ringer (often gleefully), which has given me many opportunities to think about why this is automatically off-putting to me.

Obviously the main reason is that I don't have OCs as much as I have avatars, and the idea of gleefully making myself suffer on purpose is, well. But aside from that, I think it's the concept of suffering specifically that doesn't suit how these entities operate, except for one.

Because the thing is, the idea is that if your characters aren't suffering, then they must have some kind of glorious charmed existence where nothing bad happens to them ever. Which is a false dichotomy. Awful things happen to my avatars. Adrian is an orphan on the streets for his entire childhood; he is in the military for his adult life, which I'm sure says enough about how much pain and death he witnesses and is subject to. Noah's beloved grandmother dies whilst he's away at college and his mother dies weeks later; a freaking nuclear war destroys his entire country some decades later and he has to learn to live in the wasteland left behind. Dayir... *gestures loudly to the entire plot of FFXIV, some of the events of which don't happen to her of course, but that still leaves some really wild shit*

But they don't suffer for it. Suffering is a specific state of being that entities like Noah and Dayir especially are not prone to, because they are very emotionally attuned people with strong support foundations. I could incur suffering in them by separating them from all possibility of connection for a long time, probably, but they'd actually just die in that respect (Noah would lose the will to live, Dayir literally requires physical contact to live, Adrian would kill himself in some fashion, etc). Which would not be satisfying for narrative tragedy, it'd just fucking suck.

Gabriel is the expert of suffering. Gabriel is stuck in a cycle of alienation and aggression and hard-heartedness. He is defined by the painful things that have happened to him; he has integrated them in the worst way and their mark is upon him just as strongly and as corruptively as Atom's radioactive energy is. He is so thoroughly consumed by his everpresent agony that he doesn't even recognise that he's suffering. He thinks he's doing just fine. (Until he meets his compassionate mirror, Ulysses. But that doesn't happen for a long time.) Gabriel is, incidentally, narratively closest to my current incarnation.

To make the others suffer would be to break them. There is no fun torture times to be had here. There would just be death.

"the/my/our Others", most often, I think. it does get confusing sometimes but at this point if someone's confused they can just ask for clarification, I think. "companions" has been in usage on occasion, too. formally the term is "part of the Configuration" or "Configuration member" but, as I said, that's more of a formal designation than something I want to be tossin about in casual circumstances
