Hey there! With everyone posting their post-s3 Hacks fics now, I figured I'd shake things up a little with this multi-chapter X-Files AU! You don't need to have any knowledge of the original show (though there are Easter eggs dropped in for those who do) - this is more my playing in the world of the show but telling my own story than of trying to recreate the plot of TXF beat by beat.
Updates every Sunday unless the tag starts quieting down in a few weeks, in which case I'll probably bump to 2x/week updates :)
Chapter Preview:
Ava glances down at the slip of paper in her hands again. āB10.ā The letters are scribbled in blue pen. The fuckers hadnāt even bothered to type up her new assignment on real letterhead or anything.
In the elevator, Avaās finger hovers over the button for the basement level for a long moment before she jabs at G. If theyāre not even going to pretend like this assignment is anything other than the death knell of a once-promising career, she doesnāt owe them a full 9-5 workday either. Besides, sheās pretty sure that the cute barista who works the morning shifts at Dolcezza was giving off flirty vibes last week, and she could really use the pick me up after the week sheās had. Not that sheās more than a day into it.Ā Fuck.
Still, a good matcha latte is enough to fix most days a little bit, and even though Sam hadnāt been working, Ava decides it was the right decision. She almost isnāt resentful as she stabs at B and feels the elevator trundle down to the rarely used basement level of the Hoover Building.
Even though sheās pretty sure the janitorial staff hits all the floors, the air down here feels dusty. Like, call a doctor and order an inhaler levels of dusty. She sniffles a little as she peers down the hallway until she finds office 10, which she thinks might actually be theĀ onlyĀ office down here. With a grunt of effort and a bump of her hip, she manages to shove open the heavy door without having to put down her latte or her phone or the Post-it. Sheās busy enough celebrating her small victory that she barely notices the other body in the room until a loud, āExcuse you,ā startles Ava enough to have her latte slipping from her hand and crashing to the floor.
āFuck!ā Ava yells, watching as eight dollars spills across the carpeted floorāand, oh god, carpet? No wonder it smells like the 70s down here.
āAre you just gonna watch that? Pick it up!ā
Ava jumps into action, grabbing her mostly empty cup from the ground and tossing it into the trash. Itās only then that she properly notices the woman whoās been yelling at her. Sheās dressed impeccably in black suit pants, heels, and a satiny blouse thing, and Ava wonders how the hell she got lost and ended up down here instead of wherever she belongs. Avaās bet is on legal. Maybe HR⦠A shame. Sheās pretty hot, but probably way too into rule following and chain of command shit to be fun.

šø 2025 Spring Update šø
Happy Spring everyone! I was trying to plan out my writing year a bit more yesterday and got to thinking I'd make an update, especially when I realized I might not be posting that many new things for a bit after posting the two stories I'm working on for @fanficocean's Coffee Shop Writing Challenge. It's a little because of life but a lot because I⦠I actually need to write the words. With that said, below the cut is a rough look at what I'm hoping to work on this spring and probably continue to work on into summer⦠maybe fall too.
For all the updates for the season, see below the beautiful divider made by @silkhollan.
Spring Prompts/Fic Requests - You may have noticed I closed my main askbox last year after the spooky season. It just got to be too little asks and way too much spam. It's been a few months, and I am considering opening it up again for prompt requests and games, 'cause I miss it. I might run a poll at some point about it, but I'm still just not sure. Feel free to let me know how you feel about it, or if you just generally have a request. We can chat, and I'll do my best ā¤ļø
Spring Cleaning - The WIPs! Every spring I always partake in a Deep Clean and that also counts for all the WIPs that survived the Winter Purge. There are quite a few half finished one-shots this year, and I'm hoping to take some time to finish them all. Mainly: Searching For the Sun (Clex vampire Lex story), Pinocchio and the Trickster (a continuation of Choke Me Like it Matters), Like Poetry (a cold flash tale), and Like a Romance Novel (a continuation of Its Always Something in Smallville). I have more, so many more, but these have caught the Muse's eye lately.
Lost in Translation, Part 2 - I have been working on this! It's been like pulling teeth, but I do have a more defined outline and actual scenes drafted. I also have decided how it's gonna be formatted. Which will just be a continuation of the original story that ended with Chapter 12, meaning that whenever I'm done writing it, it'll start at chapter 13. The next update will probably be when I update the chapter number. I really have no timeframe of when I'll be done with it, but it is on my mind. I really want to thank everyone again for comments and kudos, they have really driven me back to this story.
Monster Eater Verse - I know it's so early to be talking about my sweet bloody babies but working on the next two arcs are taking a lot of my mind space right now so it merits a mention. This year's I feel like I've mentioned The Boy King's Destiny a lot, but it's nearly done as far as writing. The last chapter just needs work and looks like it's gonna be happening on schedule for October 1st. It's super plot driven and a major story arc in the series that has been referred to on more than occasion within the series. I'm excited to share it!
But not completely the update I wanted to make about this verse, because the next part āoh the next part I am excited about. It has a lot of flushing, and I've been flushing ever since writing Songbird, to go, but the next major arc will be what happens directly after that. I feel like I've made it very clear throughout the series, especially with Taste of Cherry, that this universe is different. That the rules are different, that it's darker, that it's very clearly not canon divergent or adjacent, but this next arc makes it very clear just how different. Tentatively titled Sing For Me will be a multi chapter story that focuses completely on Loki telling Sam the story of Gabriel, the archangels, and the creation of their universe. It is so fun, and it has officially moved into my brain and started taking over from the back burner.
#writer updates#the wips#posting and answer comments is about to get spotty#monster eater verse#lost in translation

Merry Christmas (even if its late for me, haha!) to my mutuals and non-mutuals! :D
This blog isn't dead, but I've been in a kick for Persona 5 (& Scramble, but I'm getting up to speed to it again) and Hi3 has been.... crawling in my brain........ guh, I'm afraid it won't leave me alone
I'll probably be incorporating a few muses, but here's a small update to those that are curious/interested:
I will be porting my Genshin muses to another verse, which is Persona 5. Thanks to a few mutuals I've talked to, it made me think a lot about my own Genshin muses and decided, "I'll just have them on P5 as a potential verse."
As of now, I haven't decided on anything with them yet, but they will become active again w/ the P5 verse. Consider it a miracle because I miss musing them, but standard rules still apply: namely, they will only be with mutuals. I'm not exactly comfortable w/ non-mutuals interacting, but I won't turn down any. Just notify me beforehand, and we can talk about it!
Second, since my term break is ending next month (January), my activity will become sporadic when my second term comes by. This does mean I'll be MIA for a month again or something, but we shall see if it will happen. And, well.. Let's hope it doesn't, for the sake of my sanity.
Thirdly (since I forgot to mention this, god forbid lmao), I am planning to muse HSR as a verse! I actually talked about a certain man being in it because I was neck deep in Penacony, soooo... Expect that coming around. As a heads up however, I will be using the normal replycons as it is easier for me. This goes for the Persona verse because, again, convenience (and less stress in the long run).
(To my mutual/s that I've talked to abt HSR....... get ur dms ready lmao, I'm going to haunt you in 3 business days /hj)
Finally, with all this said and done, I have a few silly plans for 2025. I've been thinking of expanding on this blog as a multi, so mayhaps you can expect a small update to the tags and new docs for the verse/s. I've always wanted to do it but I didn't have the time, so let's make that count, yeah?
Once again, happy holidays and have a happy (early) new year! Let's hope 2025 makes things go semi-smoothly for everyone (and by that, I mean it doesn't implode on us back to back. We need that more than anything.... orz)
#written by navina... ā”#;; I miss musing my silly boys again HAHAHAHA#;; i think albedo grew on me that i had to make a decision to muse him in other fandoms#;; kazu too but thats because i've haunted him with a few friends a year or so ago#;; and went 'lmao what if i can haunt him to others here?' HAHAHAHA#;; im v excited to muse them in persona though#;; and hsr........... but only for 1 of them lmao#;; anyways#;; happy holidays! i deliver thee good news (for some of y'all) /silly

rules page update (not directed at or about anyone in particular, rather just something that's been festering for a while that i've decided i can no longer be non-deranged about)
from now on, at least for the time being, i'm not going to interact with duplicates of craig or tweek. i know it's a freak thing to say, but for a long while, my duplicate anxiety for them has been going haywire, and i've been trying to be sane and mature about it, all "all portrayals of muses are valid" and shit, but no matter how much i try rationalizing that to myself, this dash has still become a stressful, anxiety-inducing place for me to be - not through the fault of anyone else, as i've established, just bc my brain is a [strums guitar] šøš¶ Fucking Nightmare š¶
i did say when starting this blog that i was tentatively duplicate-friendly, and honestly, i kept myself duplicate-friendly for longer than i was comfortable with because of my desire to... well... not appear like a petty cunt. but the truth is that i've never really been that comfortable with them. and i'm sorry for misleading people into believing i was. i certainly tried to be.
i've also had a few problems (multiple over the past year and a half i've been running this blog, not one isolated incident, so again, this is about no one in particular) of people kind of... picking either craig or tweek to write with, with their portrayal of the opposite muse (usually, it's craig that gets picked for other people's tweeks, but not always), and kind of ignoring the other one, which has killed a lot of confidence in my portrayals. it makes me feel as though people are wrapped up in their own portrayals of these two and care nothing for what i have to say about mine, which stings even more when craig or tweek are listed as lesser muses (secondary or tertiary) when, since the inception of this blog, they have always been my MAIN MAIN SUPER MAIN muses
and speaking of their activity on this blog, i feel like there is a misconception that craig is my real main muse of the two, probably bc of my blog's color scheme, when that is not the case. they have always been equal in muse - i went into south park with every intention to like craig more and ended up becoming so immediately endeared to tweek >:( - and the color scheme of this blog is really just bc i find craig's colors bolder and prettier to look at than tweek's dfklsajlkjsdf
and of course, nobody is obligated to like / write with both of them in equal measure, it's perfectly normal to have favorites between the two. but by now, it's clear that i'm exceedingly abnormal, so... giggles š
this new rule only applies to this blog, not any characters on my sideblog, and i will still interact with others of those. i would be a real freak (derogatory) to gatekeep butters or christophe or stan, of all people. (hell, i'm a real freak (derogatory) for this, but you know...) also, of course, i will still interact with multis who have craig & tweek on them, i will just no longer interact with those specific muses.
this rule is also subject to change as time goes on and my brain chills out. for example, i used to be extremely anxious regarding duplicates of ekko from league of legends, five from the umbrella academy, or gerry from the magnus archives. but as my interests have shifted slightly away from those characters (i still love them), it no longer sends me into batshit hysterics to see them around. so, this rule is potentially temporary, only to be kept in place for as long as i need it. (which could well be forever, as i have been writing the onceler for almost four years and am still not really okay with duplicates of him, so who knows?)
#misc :: ( ooc )#misc :: ( psa )#//I TRIED TO BE NORMAL I'M SORRYYY I'M SORRY I'M A FREAK#//I'M NOT NORMAL IN THE SLIGHTEST#//i wrote i'm not MORAL at first and that too#//LKFJDLAKJSLJDF#//my tweek braincell won this round š as much as my craig braincell tried to tell it was just being insane again KLFDJSLAKJDF

for that fic ask meme - 14, 26, 50, 53, 55
14. whatās your worst writing habit?
Oof! My entire writing process is one giant bad habit, so itās hard to pick the worst part š
I know I just reblogged that post about ignoring the tyranny of the daily word count, but Iām going to say not trying to write a few words every day, or a sentence a week, or something like thatā¦I let myself get into writing droughts that go on and on and on (and, yes, Iām busier than I was in 2020 and 2021, but I love writing and doing so always makes me feel good), so trying to stop those pauses before they become droughts is something I need to do to break a bad habit.
26. do you like to write one-shots or series, and why?
Both? I write what the idea I have calls for, I guess? (Almost all of my series are collections of one-shots; I have never thought of writing a series consisting of multi-chapter fics, but one kinda sneaked in there š³)
I enjoyāand sometimes specifically choose an idea because it fitsāwriting one-shots because theyāre a good way for me to get back into writing when Iāve been too busy with life or bogged down in one of my long WIPs. Last Christmasās Mischief and Mistletoe is a great example of this: short, self-contained, and seasonally relevant š I liken these sorts of fics to artists doing a doodle or quick sketch as a warm-up.
Sometimes while writing a one-shot Iāll think of something that will open the door to a sequel, sometimes thereāll be nothing specific but nothing to rule out more in the same vein (e.g. the Tales from the Salvatore Kitchen series), and sometimes readers will have a suggestion I hadnāt thought of that I love that will turn a one-shot into a series of one-shots.
Itās nice to have a series or two where you enjoy the world/setup, because itās fun and easy to dip back in and write some more (so all the benefits of a one-shot) and you (I!) can develop ideas, characters, and events without feeling guilty about not updating (vs a single multi-chapter fic where readers have started reading and want more š); thereās less expectation.
(My true favorite things to write are the big, expansive, complex stories, but theyāre simultaneously my least favorite for all those reasons š)
50. do you plan or do you write whatever comes to your mind? 53. when writing, do you have an outline? and do you stick to it?
These two are related, so Iāll tackle them together. Iāve linked to and written about George RR Martinās post about gardening before, so thereās good background there and Iāll (try! to) make this the short version.
I mostly have a lightweight plan for what I write: a collection of scenes, or some important character beats or plot points, and often, but not always, an idea of what the ending is (sometimes my idea for the fic is āI want to write this scene that is probably somewhere in the middle of an actual fic š but more often it instead is āthis would be a fun situation to throw them into; letās see what happens!ā). Thatās as close as Iāll get to an outline š³
Iāll often also make a series of notes as Iām writing, again of the same types of things as in the āplan,ā plus dialogue and details, as a sort of āliving outlineā for whatās next/coming up. But nothing formal or well-structured (which does make it harder to do those bigger stories, naturally). I have hated outlines since elementary school, soā¦
Iāll diverge from what I have āplannedā any time I have an idea I really like or think will improve the story, although to my recollection it rarely happens, and when it does itās more small changes. Iām much more likely to split āplannedā chapters and make a fic 4x longer than I originally thought it would be š
So, needless to say, I mostly write what comes to mind. Sometimes thatās filling in the big blank spaces between things I know I want to include, and sometimes thatās deciding where the whole story itself will go. (My mind is wont to come up with crazy twists and tangents #this is the way my mind works š)
55. do you have any abandoned WIPās? What made you abandon them?
I donāt think I have any WIPs that Iāve started writing that I never intend to come back to/finish. I have an entire laundry list of WIPs that I have not written on in months or years, though.
My story as a current fanfic author goes like this:
Started writing Have At Least One Totally Epic Love in spring 2020, ran out of steam/got stuck near the pivotal moments.
Had an idea for After Ten Long Years and started writing it to try to work through that block, but got stuck on it.
Had an idea for Old West Hosie; started writing it to work around that block, then got stuck on it, too.
Had an idea for Hosie Alternate Realities; started writing it to work around that block, then got stuck there, also š³
[Cue Hope Mikaelson: āLove, Lose, Grieve, repeatā]
At some point in there, I wrote the first one-shot in the Tales from the Salvatore Kitchen series, You Complete Me, to break the cycle and publish something, which turned into 3 more seasonal one-shots (initially), and then I finally finished Have At Least One Totally Epic Love, almost exactly 1 year after I had left off. 2021 I think was a pretty good year, lots of shorter works finished, but also several more big works started where I once again ran out of steam/got stuck/got distracted by the shiny new idea š
(Also, after the experience with Have At Least One Totally Epic Love, I rarely actually write and publish things serially unless I have a really, really good idea of the scope of the fic and also know Iāll have decent amounts of writing timeāso thereās nothing out there that readers would perceive of as abandoned. The biggest example of a fic Iāve written and published serially since HALOTEL is And I Will Always Love You, 8 chapters, 32K words, written from February to May.)
So approaching 200K words of incomplete WIPs now, but nothing I intend never to finish.
Thanks for asking! Lots of great choices š Hopefully I didnāt bore you to sleep with the answers!

Blog Info Speedrun
Requests: CLOSED while I work on the kink prompts (details here) To see what I'm working on, the full list of kink prompt requests I've accepted can be seen here~ NOTE that I am NOT accepting more requests for the kink prompt list either- I have taken on all that I feel I can reasonably (eventually) get to. All forms of requests are CLOSED.
Confessions, concepts, generally thirsting: Always OPEN ^ seriously I love blindly thirst-posting, send me that shit
Commissions: CLOSED for now - my life is a bit too chaotic to hold myself to writing deadlines
Go see my art: SFW - kriskrisinc NSFW - zestybadger
~~~
^^^ click the link, but here's the short version: Fire Emblem. Genshin Impact, Kingdom Hearts, Yu Yu Hakusho, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Plus others that I'm happy to chat and thirst post about, but may not know well enough or feel confident enough about the material to actually write for.
~~~
Masterlists by fandom:

Fire Emblem (misc)
Genshin Impact
Kingdom Hearts
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Misc / other (thus far, Stardew Valley, Honkai Star Rail, Baldur's Gate 3, Fields of Mistria, and subject to grow over time)
~~~
Me: just call me Badger if you want
She/her/they/whatever
I am old and write smut, minors DNI you will get blocked
I'm a bit cagey about some personal info on this blog, but when it comes to thirsting, gushing about F/Os, kinks, w/e, send it all my way, we're open about our horny here.
~~~
When requesting (the short list):
No minors (under 18), no lolis, no "totally 100 years old but looks and/or is written like a child" - if canon age is unknown I'll use my best judgement and you'll just have to be okay with that.
Non-con is generally a no, Yandere and Dub-con are a conditional yes (the condition is that I'll decide whether I'm cozy with it or not on a case-by-case basis)
Don't ask for more than 3 characters in one ask- no, the solution to this is NOT to send multiple asks to cover all the characters you want, I'll just start deleting them.
I have no interest whatsoever in writing the 'player insert' characters from games (Lumine/Aether from Genshin, Ares/Alice from RF5, literally all of them from the Fire Emblem series, etc), so I'll likely ignore requests asking for them. I'm more than happy to incorporate aspects of these characters into how I write the 'reader insert' in my fics, but if you're asking for, like, Byleth x Reader or Lumine x Reader, I probably won't bite because player insert characters are boring, fight me about it.
** Please specify if you have a preferred gender/gender identity for the ReaderInsert character- I'll likely default to Fem or AFAB if it's left vague
** Please specify if you want a poly relationship, rather than just thoughts on multiple characters.
-> see more in my full rules list
~~~
If I do not get to your request, here are a few possible reasons:
- Tumblr ate your Ask (it do that sometimes wtf), or you sent it when my requests were CLOSED, so I deleted it
- I have already done something very similar in the past and have nothing new to add to the conceptĀ
- It's a concept that I simply don't have any interesting thoughts on and can't find much to write for it- sorry, I'm humanĀ
- It goes against one or more of my rules (duh)Ā
- I've received too many asks from you and I'm trying to keep my queue open for new-comers and shy folks.Ā
- You asked me to write for like a dozen characters in one Ask and like listen dawg, I do this for fun, I don't need to be stressed keeping track of that many people lolĀ
And finally:
- Idk man I do what I want. It's free smut, get off my back.
As a final note: My schedule is Wack and changes a lot. If I'm slow to update and do requests, you're just gonna have to learn to live with it somehow.
Update on Requests
So I feel bad, but in the effort of transparency Im going to post the dreaded list of requests that i'm probably never going to fill. To be honest, the list has stayed out of control, even though I tried to pair it down considerably. I look at it and it makes me feel guilty about the projects I want to work on.
I want to produce the best stuff for you guys, and i don't feel like i can do that if i force myself to write about things I'm not passionate about and/ or realize i don't have the knowledge or research base to finish. I think in this instance it's about quality over quantity. This is supposed to be something I enjoy and looking over the list turns me into a giant stress ball, and then like no writing gets done.
There are several requests that will stay on my active list, and won't be listed below. I am 100% committed to filling these (you can ask just about any person i interact with because i talk about it all of the time).
If you happen to find one of your requests listed below and are upset, please message me. I will explain my reasoning and it's 100% plausible that we can come to a mutually beneficial resolution.
I'm sorry guys, i just want to do the best i can and enjoy doing it. I hope you understand.
The Dreaded List
binoe as parents where r comes out as trans? you donāt have to, i just thought itād be kinda cool to read especially as someone who is trans.
Binoe x toddler reader where the Team meets super shy reader after a football game. Reader is like small and cute but fast as hell and in the end runs around with a couple player
hey could you do a christen x reader where r plays for arsenal and chris is at man united and they have to play each of and arsenal wins so r feels bad so decided to take christen on a date to make up for it if thatās ok ?
Christen Pressās daughter and moves over the play in europe for arsenal to prove sheās not only christens kid so when r has to play against tobin and christens she plays the best she ever has and scores a hat trick and some cute mother daughter moments at the end if thatās ok?
Emily sonnett imagines where the reader meets The team and Emily family as well? Like R plays softball and Emily takes her family and the ones that she is close to from the team to the game and surprise R as well?
Alpha sonnett x omega reader. Reader has to stay with Kelley during one of her heats until sonnett gets back from quarantine or something and bc sonnett trusts Kelley and reader knew Kelley in college she knows sheāll take good care of r and when she gets back r had gotten sick on top of having her heat so she has to take her to the doctor for it but r is scared of them
Krashlyn x child reader being adopted
Tobin x alpha press and reader fic, that was so good!!! Obviously if you donāt want to donāt feel pressured or anything but would you do one where itās the same pairing but the three of them are the best cowards in the league. Like ATM was for the wwc but with alpha reader x alpha press x omega Tobin? Like in a game everyone knows there specific roles like Tobin is the quick dribbling creative and sometimes defensive one while press scores the goals and the reader is the more physical one. And like during a game someone sees Tobin ass the weak link and targets her but ends up with not only two very pissed mates but also a whole national team?
little!reader x krashlyn about the reader waking them up after she has a nightmare and then cuddling her and take her back to bed with them and giving her a bottle to calm her back down?
Tobin x alpha press and reader fic, that was so good!!! Obviously if you donāt want to donāt feel pressured or anything but would you do one where itās the same pairing but the three of them are the best cowards in the league. Like ATM was for the wwc but with alpha reader x alpha press x omega Tobin? Like in a game everyone knows there specific roles like Tobin is the quick dribbling creative and sometimes defensive one while press scores the goals and the reader is the more physical one. And like during a game someone sees Tobin ass the weak link and targets her but ends up with not only two very pissed mates but also a whole national team?
Alpha!Rose x Omega!Reader: Where R is close with Sonnett and Rose doesnāt mind it at first. But then fans decide to ship them together even though R and Rose are together publicly. She starts getting more jealous and possessive of R and finally snaps when R starts smelling like Sonnettās scent... angst + fluff pls
cute Alex x reader? Maybe the team makes fun of them about being so attached but they are so unbothered because they enjoy their time together.
little r where the reader is new to the team and doesn't have a mommy or a caregiver and one of the other littles is getting jealous because all the other mommies starting to fuss over the new teammate?
uswnt x baby reader, were the reader has type 1 diabetes?
uswnt x baby r where r is really shy but also really good at snowboarding and basically shows off during team bonding?
team with a reader whose always cold?
Tierna imagine?? maybe where reader and t are standford roommates and they start to get closer but reader isnāt out yet and panics when T nearly kisses her. angst and fluff ensures
reader is a famous snowboarder and her and Tobin have been dating for a year or two and they met at like a ski resort one year. And the reader takes them back to finally teach Tobin how to snowboard and ends up proposing to Tobin?
Our troublemaker universe - Kellex x Reader: (set in troublemaker universe) R starts getting closer to another dom for whatever reason and to Kellex, itās like sheās slipping away from them and not really needing them anymore. So, they start getting a bit jelly and possessive over R to the point where they start setting rules to keep R by them, but it backfires bc they get into an argument that leads R into seeking comfort from the said dom. But in the end, they make up and everything gets good again
Can you do a ash and Ali request where they and the reader are together but the reader has been away for awhile (job or quarantine in a different state) and the reader surprised them at a game?
Hey! You Reached the Bottom! Thank you so much for your compassion and understanding.
āCABBAGEā
A/N: First, I wanna apologize to the Diakko day mods that reviewed a completely different fic for me that was supposed to be my entry, but then... boom new diakko day entry. Iām sorry ;-;, I just couldnāt figure out a flow that would still have what I had in mind. Uwu, sorry for using up your precious time.
Soulmate, non-magic? AU. Cliche stuff, common trope. STILL. Iām using it. Fun fact, I slaved away for this for two/three days hoho~ peak procrastination, donāt encourage it. Also on ao3, but I have a habit of posting full chaps on tumblr. Teehee. This is... long... (could have been a crazy multi-chap, ey?) but I guess thatās what you get for trying to fit a full story with an AU setting that needs to be established. Sorry if it feels slow with regards to reaching DiAkko, but donāt worry, from when they come along til the end, youāll have loads of them. Sorry for the pacing tho :((( I also apologize in advance if there are some OOC bits that yāall might not like. Not too confident in it, but hope you all like it. I DID NOT BETA READ THIS ANYMORE BECAUSE IāM TIRED OF THE LENGTH OF IT LMAO. Anywho...
Happy DiAkko day! Enjoy?
~Shintori Khazumi
It was a normal thing, really. She had grown up with a thin chain slung around her neck, attached to another tiny metal thingy resting against the skin of her collarbone. On cold days, she would keep it in her pocket because god knows how weirdly tingly and-or painful that felt on bare skin. Sure she could have chosen to just wear it so that others could see it- actually, wasnāt she going against societyās rules when she hid it? She was, wasnāt she. Heck, it surprised her now that sheās realized it. Why hasnāt she been arrested yet? This is a crime isnāt it? Her mom, her dad, would they get to say their farewells once she got incarcerated-
āI can see it on your face, that youāre thinking about something totally stupid again.ā
āShut up, Sucy.ā
āJust saying.ā Sucy shrugs, going back to working on their chemistry lab activity. āI mean, I kinda just want you to focus on what weāre doing. Unless you want me to slip in some stuff in your project there.ā She grinned in that evil little way the brunette had come to know her for.
āIf I know you, which I do, youāve probably already done that.ā
āAkko! I canāt believe youād accuse me of something like hurting my friends.ā Sucy really couldnāt sell the āfeigning shockā act as her monotone words did little to convey emotion, and that forced gasp was probably just everyone elseās normal manner of breathing. Which was scary, now that she thought about it. Did that mean Sucyās normal breathing was even less obvious? Oh god, now that Akko thinks about it, she would sometimes joke in her head about how she often wondered whether or not Sucy was actually dead during sleepovers.
āI mean, come on! She sleeps like a corpse in a coffin! And she always looks so pale-ā
āI knew you were thinking about something stupid again.ā Once more, her thoughts were brought to a halt by that lazed, snarky voice that could only belong to her best friend who shared her mutual desire to strangle one another.
āI was just wondering if you were undead or something.ā
āScrew you.ā
āWish Iād find someone to do that...ā Akko muttered under her breath, to which Sucy sighed. She had heard it, and immediately knew what the Japanese was about to get hung up on. Again. Like she always did.
A hand reaching over to pat her back in consolation, but Akko felt a little worse, feeling that small, hard material lightly tapping the area along with the rest of Sucyās hand. Sucy chuckled, sympathetically. āI know youāre constantly in a state of heat, Akko-ā Or not.
āI am not, you bitch!ā
Sucy could stand to ignore that. ā-But really. Are you really that obsessed with finding your soulmate? Weāre all young and all that jazz that those old hags keep yapping about. You have a lot of time, you know?ā She smiled a sincere smile this time, trying her best to comfort her friend. āAnd besides, even though itās something written on official print that most people find their soulmates at sixteen, most isnāt all.ā
Akko felt a little better. Sucy could be an asshole, but as a best friend, she really knew what to say to Akko sometimes. Ā
ā-Thatās basic English that even you can understand.ā
She takes it back. She takes some of her heartfelt gratitude back. āI hate you.ā
āAww, I abhor you with all of my non-existent heart as well.ā Sucy smirked, swatting Akkoās attacking hand away. āMuah~ā She threw in a wink for good measure.
āUghh, oh gosh... Professor Croix!ā Akko bemoaned to their supervising teacher. āCan I please use the emergency shower? And eyewash. I think Miss Manbavaran got her unholy sappiness spilled all over me.ā
Croix sighed, rubbing the spot between her eyes with her thumb and index finger. Not this again. āCanāt you two ever pipe down in my class?ā She sighed. āPLEASE?!ā
āNope.ā -Was the deadpanned response.
āI now see why you guys are friends.ā Croix groaned, walking over to their table. āYou little shits just wonāt give me a break. And yet, youāre so behaved with Chariot.ā
āHey! Sensei, cursing your students is bad!ā Akko scolded, before adding, āBesides, this and that are separate matters. Prof Chariot is just sweet and so nice, you canāt bear the weight of guilt of hurting her. Right?ā Akko turned to Sucy who just nodded.
āShut it, Kagari. That is not a valid rea- wait... maybe it is.ā
āSee?ā
Her head was starting to hurt. Just why had she decided to be a teacher in place of any other job involving chemistry? Really, there were so many other things she could have done!
Just as she was about to return the verbal jabs, a gentler voice inserted itself into their conversation. āUmm... guys, professor, the other students are being distracted by your... um... exchange.ā
Three pairs of eyes blinked, before two widened in apologetic shock, while the other seemed to gleam in pleasure. āSorry, Lotte.ā
āSucy, please try to look even the slightest bit sorry.ā
And disappointment replaced them right away.
āTsk.ā
āSucy... we will be having a talk back in our room.ā Akko heard that audible gulp, reaching for her friendās hand under the table, squeezing support.
āDonāt die.ā She whispered.
āYou too, Akko.ā
āNoooo! How? I donāt even live with you two!ā
Lotte was about to respond that Akko always stayed over, anyway, but the frantic screams of their teacher took the words far away from her mind.
āAkko! Akko! Your solution is bubbling! Wait, thatās not supposed to do that-ā Croixās concern was justified as in a matter of a split second, everyone in their immediate circle was covered in some bright pink substance. āSHOWER, EMERGENCY SHOWER-ā
āW-we wonāt all fit, Professor!ā Lotte had begun tearing up, wondering if she was about to die from whatever toxic chemical their beloved dunce must have mixed in. Maybe if she prayed to something somewhere out there, the spirits of nature would take hers and maybe she could live as some kind of forest sprite in some alternate magical world, and crap, she was becoming delusional.
āHoho~ What a nice outcome~.ā
āManbavaran!ā
āRelaaaax, I switched out all of Akkoās components for some of my stuff. It was a precaution.ā She smiled, unbelievably innocent-looking. ā...and maybe added a little surprise.ā
āSu.CY!ā Akko lunged forward before being stopped mid-air, caught by the collar.
āAkko. Sucy. Iāll see you in the office later.ā
ā...your office?ā They seemed amazingly unfazed. Theyād probably been so used to being there that they must see it as a lounge of sorts. But no, Croix wasnāt going to be defeated by teenage rascals that were the cause of her hair prematurely turning white. No.
āNope.ā
āTh-then, Finneranās?ā They werenāt completely scared of the aforementioned teacher. She just gave them such an earful, sometimes theyād joke to Lotte about needing hearing aids at some point.
āNo.ā Croixās smile grew despicably wide and dark. āHolbrookeās.ā
Lotte sighed in sympathy. Well, sheād expected this development sooner or later. āIāll wait for you by the usual bench.ā
//-//-//-//-//
A week of suspension. One week off school, no school or class-related updates allowed from classmates, and only check-ins and work drops from teachers. That was... surprisingly light after all the trouble theyād accumulated over the past first month of the semester. Or maybe it was because it was just the start of the school year that the headmistress really wanted as little to go wrong as possible. Preferably nothing would go wrong. Or it could also be the fact that they were in their senior year, and the teachers really wanted all their students to graduate.
But you could never tell with a group as rowdy as the āwitchesā of Luna Nova International Institute. They were rightly labeled as such with the cursed terrors they had inflicted, every incident theyā d caused all over the school premises and beyond.
If it wasnāt Akko and Sucy, it was Jasminka somehow being able to sneak in and out of the classroom and buy out the entire snack section of the cafeteria, and making it back to class without anyone noticing. With her size, it was some kind of scary magic trick. If it wasnāt that either, then it was Constanze constantly installing who-knowās-what in the schoolsā computers. It it wasnāt her, then it was Amanda and Hannah pulling at hairs, or cutting at each otherās necks, then the next thing you know theyāre either making out in public, or making out in public... with Barbara. There was also Lotte when she was in her wild states of fangirling after a new Night Fall release. People tended to keep a safe distance from her during those times. (Sheād once shaken a girl unconscious out of her sheer excitement at the mention of, āOh, I read the latest release tooā.)
Never a dull day with them.
Scarily so.
Holbrooke had smiled at them kindly as always, but there was just a little something else behind it that felt like Akko and Sucy were about to die on the spot.
āPlease. I beg of you. Your first two years, we tried to overlook all your mischief as it did not pose any threat to the masses, only towards you and your friend group... well... physical harm or threat, at least. I donāt know how many people are psychologically scarred because of you.ā She had said that, but they didnāt know if it was a joke, a serious statement, or both.
After being given twenty blank pages to write their usual apologies on- they shared a laugh, thinking back on when Amanda got fifty-, the pair made their merry way to the bench just by the school gate where Lotte sat, chatting alongside and excited Barbara, a Hannah with a fond smile directed at her life-time partner, and Amanda who was carrying both their bags for them, waving goodbye to Constanze and Jasminka who looked like they were just leaving.
āAww, didnāt get to catch my little friend.ā Akko pouted, wanting to hug Conz as she always did. She was so cute. And soft. Like a plush. Always calming Akko down.
āSheās gonna shoot one of her tiny lazers at you again. Those actually burn.ā Amanda reminded, laughing as she remembered what Lotte told her about why they were late. āAnd I heard you two got some quality time with the big woman upstairs?ā Her grin widened. āHow many?ā
āTwenty.ā They responded in synch, hands aching from the memory.
āHeh... not bad. Doesnāt beat my record though.ā She cackled, slinging an arm over Hannahās shoulder, Akko not missing the glint on her left ring finger. How nice.
āDonāt egg them on, idiot.ā Hannah sighed, peeling the limb off her. āAnd you all got nothing on these two.ā She pointed a thumb to the still excitedly conversing pair. āThey wrote a fucking novel for their apology. Literally. But the teachers were so tired of reading that they werenāt made to write apology notes anymore.ā
āHey! Cleaning the bathrooms arenāt the best either!ā Barbara, now done with her talk with Lotte, turned to pinch the gingerās arm.
āI mean, we all have cleaned them at some point.ā
āTrue, true.ā The group nodded in consensus.
ā...ā
āThis is not a very good fact.ā Barbara pointed out, and they all laughed, the ones seated slowly getting up, everyone ready to go home.
As they exited the gate, they all waved their goodbyes, Akko and her two best friends heading one way, and Amanda and her girls the other. Just as the sun was setting at that hour in the afternoon, red eyes caught the reflected glimmer of light against the three bands on each girlās ring finger. Those same eyes traveled to similar hoops donned by the pair walking quietly in front of her, hands brushing by one another.
Really. She was happy all her friends had found their destined ones. Some partners may look to be as mismatched as Sucy and Lotte, and some cases were as rare as the three-way between the snarky British girls and their American idiot, but... the system had worked some magic in perfectly matching people, it seemed. They all seemed happy with who they had.
Akko didnāt know if this was some kind of spiritual occurrence like fate or the likes, or if this was just one ginormous scientific experiment on billions of guinea pigs across the globe, but... Akko wanted in on it too.
Placing a hand over where her heart was, she felt for the metal against her chest, clutching it through her uniform blouse.
Just when would her āsoulmateā come?
//-//-//-//-//
Their first stop, as per usual, was the small apartment complex that Lotte and Sucy lived in. When their parents had discovered that these children had found the one meant for them, they were more than willing to help the girls move in together, and get used to a life-long companionship. They trusted them as they were both capable and level-headed, and Akko was so happy that her friends were happy. She always was.
Lotte invited her in. As always. And Akko shouldāve accepted like she always did as well, but somehow, today... she just didnāt feel like it. So she made a random excuse, something believable enough, like how her parents had asked her to make dinner because theyād be home late, and the Fin just had to let her go, even if she felt something was off, and that the brunette might just be lying.
There had been a time when Lotte and Sucy had just gotten together that Akko seemed to distance herself from her best friends. They soon found out it was out of her concern that she might be intruding on their relationship, or bothering them, taking away from the time the pair could spend alone together as a couple. Obviously, they had never seen Akko as a nuisance, and were saddened she would think of such things.
With a talk, reassurances, and clarifications in place, their bond as friends became ever stronger, and more trusting.
But Akko still wanted to be considerate. Out of love.
...and maybe a little envy that made her want to distance herself from the sight of people with fulfilled partnerships.
Maybe she was just a sore, lonely loser who couldnāt truly be happy for her friends.
Who knows.
After jogging the rest of the way home, a simple five-minute distance away from the apartments, she reached that familiar wooden gate, the name plate āKagariā shiny and clean, like her mother liked it. Pushing the swinging portion open, she walked up the driveway, smiling at her share little garden with her Mama. Looks like the vegetables were growing up healthy. Maybe she could try some new dishes out and have her friends give her feedback. The usual agenda.
āIām home!ā She called out in the foyer, shoes slipping off and set neatly to the side. A habit strongly instilled in her since childhood. āMama?ā The scents of vegetables and meat, and was that... cookies! Her mom was baking cookies! āMama!ā
Padding down the hall and entering the open living room, she found her father splayed out, snoring on the couch with a newspaper covering his face. Giggling to herself, she continued her way into the kitchen, spotting the one sheād been looking for, ear buds in and swaying to some music only she could hear. Akko smiled. Her mom was so youthful, she was such a girl. With her bright pink apron and bunny slippers, and impeccable manners and home skills.
āMa~ma!ā She called, hugging her motherās waist from behind.
The older woman yelped, spatula flying into the air, but with Akko smoothly catching it and licking off some of the sauce on it. She tried not to look into those disproving eyes, and simply released her mother and went to wash the utensil.
āAkko...ā
āI said I was home! You didnāt hear me, mama. This is revenge.ā She grinned cheekily, her mother sighing before a fond smile played on her lips.
āFine, fine. But just this once, okay?ā
āHai~ā Akko gave a mock salute, enjoying this moment with her mother as the her co-brunette rolled her eyes fondly. Akko walked up to her, kissed her cheek, and attempted to āappeaseā her mother by offering her exemplary culinary services- or so her dad had once claimed. āLet me help you out?ā
Unable to keep up the annoyed act longer, her mother slipped into giggles, turning to gather her daughter into her arms and pepper kisses all over her hair. āThank you, baby. Please chop me up some of the veggies in the bag by the sink.ā
āRoger!ā
And they shared another laugh at the voice coming from the other room, screaming a sleepy, āWHOāS ROGER?! ANOTHER BOY-ā
The usual always felt so good.
//-//-//-//-//
Dinner had been fairly uneventful. Her cousin- the relation fairly distant- who currently lived with them wasnāt home still, just like always. She knew he was always busy at school, and with the little business her father had him manage, so that was a normal thing as well. She had ended up just confessing to her parents what sheād done in school this time, in hopes that her being honest instead of them finding out via a phone call from school first would ease the inevitable punishment awaiting her.
It... kind of helped. Kind of.
Her father had laughed so hard, clearly amused at her and Sucyās antics. Her mother sighed deeply, not knowing if she should even still be disappointed anymore. Akko and school accidents and incidents werenāt uncommon at all, after all. It wasnāt a surprise. Really, the biggest school-related surprise theyād gotten was the fact that Akko wanted to take a science-related course instead of an arts one. They knew it had always been her dream to be a performer. So why was she taking that when Luna Nova offered the Arts as well. It was something they would forever wonder about.
Akko was usually so open and honest with them in just about everything, but this was one thing she would never clear up with them. And they could never understand why. There was definitely a deep reason behind it. But why did she have the need to keep it to herself? They worried, but they also believed in her, that she would tell them if she needed to. She was that kind of child.
They hoped.
Kissing her parents good night, She walked away from the kitchen banter of who should wash the dishes between the two adults, and trudged up the wooden stairs to her room. Akko had offered, but they said she should just rest up. She looked like she had a long day. Besides, she had a week to help out at home. Akko shivered at the thought of being worked like a mule. That was a joke of course, but her mama could be so Spartan sometimes.
Her door clicked close, and she immediately found herself face-first in the soft covers of the lower bunk of her bed, lights of the room still down. Originally, the Kagariās had been expecting twins because of how large Akkoās motherās stomach had been. Apparently, they were simply blessed with a very healthy baby. (She was a fair bit taller than her mother, and had a good height for a Japanese woman). As Akko grew up, however, she insisted to keep the bunk as it seemed like it could be useful to turn into her own little fort. Plus, sleepovers wouldnāt be much of a problem in terms of space.
Flipping onto her back, she stared at the glow-in-the-dark stars pasted onto the top of her ceiling. It was fairly high up, with this side of the house being designed a little differently, the roof of Akkoās room forming a dome. This was at her request as a child after attending one of Professor Chariotās public lectures on stars as a child. Akko had since then been hooked to them, the fading glow of the stickers allowing her sights of the constellations sheād painstakingly formed, sticking each point one by one with the help of her dad and a ladder.
She had been saving up lately to buy one of those small, portable planetarium projectors. She didnāt want to outright ask her parents for one, and she had taken a few secret part-time jobs to make up for the amount she needed. Little by little, she was getting close to her goal. Sheād have one someday. One day.
Her eyes felt heavy all of a sudden, an arm moving to rest over them as her breathing slowed, thoughts drifting to stars and constellations, and myths, and tales, and fate, and...
Her world shut down.
//-//-//-//-//
āAtsuko. Atsuko, get up. Akko. Wake up, bloody hell, you sleep like a log!ā
āMmrrnghmm... eh?ā Blinking her eyes open, she spotted a young man, brown hair just like hers, dressed in a cardigan and slacks, looking ready to go out on some date, or the like, or maybe he had more business as usual. āAndrew.ā
āAkko.ā He responded dryly. āItās eight in the morning. I know itās the weekend, but really, sleeping in isnāt a good habit.ā
Rolling over to shield her eyes from the intrusive sunlight and man, she waved him away sloppily, ready to get back to rest, body feeling heavy for some reason.
āAkko!ā
āYou really do take my momās place when she isnāt around, Andrew.ā Akko complained, sitting up, if only to get Andrew to pipe down. āAlright, I get it.ā She rubbed the sleep away from her eyes, stretching her body out and taking in a breath of fresh air. āBut if youāre here, Iām figuring my parents are out?ā
She received a nod, followed by an explanation. āThey said they had a picnic date planned for the whole day.ā
Akko pouted. āAww, and they didnāt think to take me along? How mean~ā
āThey tried to wake you up, believe me.ā Andrew scoffed. āYou could sleep through world war two without problem, however.ā
āGee, thanks.ā
āYouāre welcome.ā
āGet out, please.ā
āLater.ā
āIām asking nicely.ā Akko whined, slipping out of her bed, realizing she hadnāt changed out of her uniform last night.
āAfter I tell you about our plans for today.ā
A well-shaped brow raised in suspicion at the words. āOur plans?ā Akko voiced. āWhat do you mean. āour plansā? I donāt have any plans of spending time with you today, as far as my knowledge tells me.ā
āNot that you have mu-ā Andrew was about to throw in the usual insulting jab, playful banter, but refrained. He did actually need Akko to go with him.
āHmm?ā The lack of a biting response didnāt sit quite well with Akko. Something was up with her cousin, and she was sure that she was about to find out just what.
There was an awkward pause in the air before the older boy cleared his throat; maybe he should begin with getting on her good side. āL-lovely weather weāre having today.ā
āJust tell me what you want from me and leave.ā
āWeāre going to the mall, please help me.ā
āWhy?ā
ā...ā
āWhy?ā Akko pressed. If Andrew wasnāt going to give her a good enough explanation, she wasnāt going to move a single inch.
ā...Itās Deniseās birthday soon.ā He confessed, and Akko actually backed off.
āOh.ā She immediately understood what Andrew wanted without him having to expound on his earlier statement. Really, he could be such an adorable dork sometimes, especially when it came to Denise.
Denise was Andrewās set partner. She was a kind person, gentle, lady-like, intelligent, mild-mannered, but strong-willed. She was great. Too good for Andrew, Akko would tease at times. But really, they made such a good match. She liked Denise; she was sweet to Akko, exchanged treats with her, as well as tutored her from time to time, being in the same school and all. She also kept Andrew busy and out of Akkoās hair, so she was perfect! So if not for Andrewās sake, Akko should at least do something nice for her friend.
āGive me half an hour. Iāll be ready by then.ā
Andrew breathed a sigh of relief, offering Akko a grateful smile. āThank you. Iāll see myself out then.ā
āFinally!ā
With a childish sticking of the tongue out at each other, a habitual thing they had formed, Andrew had closed the door to Akkoās bedroom, not forgetting to lock it behind him for privacyās sake. Akko was thankful.
Instead of getting up, however, and preparing for the day with Andrew out of the room, Akko lay back down on the soft mattress, eyes trained to the top of the room again. As she saw her little clusters of stars and constellations, red ribbons connecting points one to the other, always to be linked even if they were far apart, never to be broken, her regular intrusive thoughts had begun making their way to the forefront of her mind again.
Fated people... soulmates, huh. Werenāt those terms just glorified ways of saying everyone was in some kind of arranged marriage they could never get out of? Wouldnāt there be at least one person averse to all this? Maybe? But why... did all the people sheās known, whoāve met their match-why did they all seem content?
Feeling for that familiar metal piece under her clothing, she pulled it out by the chain, observing it as it glinted against the morning light. Her finger traced over the engraving on the outside, admiring the workmanship, but frowning at the words.
She thought back on it all. How all this destined person stuff all started out, as the history books told them. Before the records of History ever existed, they said that the leaders of the ancient world had gathered together, seeing the āsorrow of the worldā, and came to a decision of what to to do to make the world better in that regard. They decided that āLOVEā was the answer, as cheesy as it sounded. And so a system was put into place that would overcome barriers and seas, both literal and figurative, of difference, and bring to mankind the meaning of true joy- Akko always found it incredibly sappy and cringey when it was laid out like that.
Like any system, there were the finer details that made it all work one way or the other. It is said that people are born issued with a ring to be worn on their person on all times. It was a mystery as well, how one could never seem to outgrow the ring. Like it was made to grow alongside you. It was made out of metal, however, and it made things all the more perplexing. Who knows what magic goes on behind all of this? No one knows who makes the rings, or who created this system; nor does anyone know who assigns partners to each other. All theyāve known are the facts that the rings were created, containing words that served to be a hint to who your soulmate is supposedly. When you meet that person, youād just know. The words, theyād just make sense. It didnāt matter if it never did all your life. One day, everything would just click, apparently. That was how the words were chosen, they said. Then these rings would be distributed to countries and the government would be responsible in ensuring that they got to their rightful owners.
Honestly, this whole thing sounded like some deep cult-ish shit, and Akko was quite shocked that she- along with possibly millions, or billions- had never questioned it before. After all, it was the usual; as always, the norm. It could be something of a mysterious world movement that no one knew of, but with it simply claiming to have the goal of ābringing happiness to all citizensā, people hardly seemed to mind where it took them.
Akko remembered the first time she ever found it weird. She was in the fourth grade, and that day, they had learned the importance of the words on the rings. āHints to finding your one, true love, their teacher had claimed, trying to rouse excitement from the students at the prospect of soulmates.
And while every other little girl squealed in joy and giddiness upon reading the words written on their rings, Akko had a look of distaste on her face at the sight of her words, immediately hiding the item from possibly prying eyes of her classmates who had already began to compare words with others.
She hated it. She had then ran home to tell her mother about it.
āMooommm! Mom!ā
āAkko? Whatās wrong? Youāre all sweaty and you still have your outdoor boots on-ā
āWhy does my word suck so much?ā
āHuh?ā The woman was lost for words, confounded by a simple question.
āWhy does it suck so much? My word! Ā I mean...ā Holding her ring out for her Mama to see, Akko continued on her rant. āWhat the heck does cabbage even mean?! IS HE A FARMER?! DOES MY SOULMATE LIKE CABBAGE THAT MUCH?!ā
āAh... well...ā
āWhy couldnāt it be something cool like yours and dads. āEyes like rubiesā, and āRider from the northā just sounds so badass and romantic! And then thereās me with CABBAGE. Ā Sure, the ring is pretty and all, but... WHAT IS CABBAGE?!ā
āI... donāt know, sweetheart.ā
Akko had felt so frustrated with her word, that she wanted to cry. āMy soulmate sucks!ā
Thinking back on those times, she sure was such a child. It wasnāt her soulmateās fault that the government or whatever authority or higher power decided to describe him or her that way. If anything, her partner is a victim of slander. Even Sucy had it better with the description. Akko chuckled mirthlessly. What are those people thinking. Ah, her head was starting to hurt from overthinking all this.
āāBring happiness to all citizensā, my ass. With a hint as weird and cryptic as this, how am I supposed to be āhappyā like everyone else?ā Akko sighed once more, unclasping the chain from behind her neck, and taking her ring off, hanging it over her eyes, watching it dangle in the air, the elegant cursive of ācabbageā pissing her off a little more than it should.
Along with the ring came a handbook of sorts. Akkoās sat atop her bedside drawer. In it were more rules, guidelines, and information to be taken note of, but they could only be read at certain ages, sections sealed off by some kind of technology that only unlocked come oneās birthday. An example of a rule was related to how to wear the ring. It didnāt seem to be a heavily imposed rule as Akko had done away with it all her life. It was that rings should be worn on your right ring finger so long as you hadnāt found your assigned partner, moving it to your left once you have. Akko had been ashamed of her word and had always carried it around her neck, hidden underneath her clothes. Her mother had scolded her for it in the past, but she didnāt care. She didnāt want to get teased by the other children for having such a strange hint. She had believed that it would give her a hard time.
And it still did. With it being so vague and odd, there was no way this hint made much sense to her, at all. Would she ever find the person her whole being was linked to for a lifetime?
Besides the rules came soulmate-related explanation for the rings and words. An instance of this would be that the meaning behind the words would only be revealed to them once they entered fourth grade. She never understood the significance of that. Why couldnāt one just read through everything and understand it all at once? Well, not that it mattered. She would soon be turning eighteen, and opening a section that made her feel just the slightest bit bitter.
[What to do if you havenāt found your soulmate yet.]
Sucy may have told her that each person had their own time, and that she was still young, and had plenty of years to go searching. But when everyone else around you had already found theirs by the ānormalā designated time, youād start to feel quite isolated and lonely, right? She was already different from the rest with the weird-ass word she was stuck with, and now she wasnāt even close to being on the right track to finding the person it was pointing to.
It was frustrating.
Three knocks and a voice followed suit. āAkko? Are you ready? Itās been about twenty-five minutes, but I didnāt hear any noise coming from your room. Are you actually okay?ā
Right. Andrew.
āIām fine! Sorry, I got lost in thought. Be right out! Maybe in fifteen! My bad, really.ā
āItās fine, Iām the one requesting a favor, after all!ā Andrew responded through the wood, and Akko felt his presence leave her immediate area.
Hopping off her bed and grabbing her towel, she made her way to the bathroom. Maybe a cold shower would help her stop thinking about all of this for a few. She really should stop questioning the whole system of practically the whole world. It wasnāt good for her sanity.
Turning on the shower and soaking herself, her assumption of her endangered mental health was confirmed.
āAH, I FORGOT TO STRIP!ā
//-//-//-//-//
āYou sure took your sweet time getting ready.ā Andrew commented, locking the door behind them and tossing the keys into his pocket as they got to walking. Opening the gate for Akko with a bow, they shared a laugh, going on their merry way down the street.
As often as they got on one anotherās nerves, they undeniably enjoyed each otherās company. It was nice. Akko liked it to an extent. The conversation was fun, the exchanges never dull, it was time spent well. What she didnāt like about hanging around with Andrew were all the stares and glares she got from people around. Much like now.
It wouldāve been great if it ended with just observation, but there was always that one brave (or maybe stupid) soul who would come up to the pair to ask if they were an item. The brunette pair would then proceed to do their usual schtick of jumping a meter away from each other, and pretending to gag whilst glaring.
āNO WAY. WITH HER/HIM?!ā
And despite the denial, instead of feeling joy at the availability of Andrew- Akko assumed it was him that people always wanted to confirm about anyway- there was no delight, only some form of fear. The creeped-out kind maybe?
Continuing their walk, Akko slapped Andrewās shoulder, hard. The boy looked like he could bite her.
āUgh... itās already such a pain in school when we have joint functions and people mistake us for a couple. I was hoping it was obvious we were related.ā
Andrew scoffed at the statement. āIām sorry, but Iām actually quite pleased I donāt look to be related to your ugly face.ā
He deserved the stronger smack, Akko would say.
āAKKO! That hurt!ā
āYou know what else hurts? The fact that people canāt seem to get it in their heads that not every guy and girl walking next to each other are partners. Damn, and I used to think it was a good thing that I could use you to get out of awkward confession situations.ā Sometimes people did that, despite the entire ādestined partnerā situation. āWeird times.ā
āYou actually get confessed to? Hahaha, why? Guys must need glasses.ā
The tall lad flinched at the held up fist. āIām kidding. Youāre actually growing up to be quite pretty Akko.ā
Eyes wide one second, then smiling sweetly the next, a chill ran up Andrewās spine at Akkoās reaction... that suddenly morphed into disgust, a hand pinching his side. āEw, I kinda liked you better when you werenāt so gross and cheesy.ā
āAh- h-hurts, that, Akko, that stings, ouch! Let go! I was trying to be nice!ā Andrew retaliated with his own pinch to Akkoās slightly rounded cheeks. āLet go!ā
āYou lwet gfho!ā They released their holds at the same time, rubbing the sore spots on their bodies. āWhy were you suddenly being all weird?ā
ā...ate...etter...man...ā
āWhat was that?ā Akko couldnāt understand any of Andrewās incoherent mumbling.
ā...My soulmate told me I should really try to be a better gentleman... to you...ā
āHaha, sheās right about that! Youāre such a dick!ā
āOi!ā
Before Andrew could physically get back at her, Akko made a dash to the mall entrance across the street right as the street light turned green for pedestrians. āLoser has to buy the other ice-cream!ā
āThatās cheating!ā
āMaybe!ā
//-//-//-//-//
āSee? Youāre all out of energy now because of how rowdy you were earlier today.ā Andrew scolded, hands on his hips, a paper bag with the chosen gift in it, slung around one wrist.
āYāthink so? This is usually... hah... nothing... to me.ā Akko panted, plopping down on one metal chair by the ice-cream bar. āWeird.ā
Andrew sighed, deciding to cater to Akkoās needs since she was nice enough to help him out today. āIāll get you a water. What flavor of ice-cream would you like?ā
āMatcha-Vanilla~ā Akko drawled, now slumped against the table, liking the cool surface against her somehow, heated cheek. āGo forth, my peasant!ā
āNoted, your eminence.ā
āMm, mm!ā Akko nodded in approval, arms going under her head to cushion it. Her eyes were getting heavy. Did all that walking around really make her that tired? Her head was starting to hurt, and her body still felt heavy. Just what-
//-//-//-//-//
āAkko. Akko! Atsuko!ā
ā...Andrew?ā
āTsk. Should I call an ambulance?ā
āAndrew...ā
āExcuse me, are you in need of any assistance for your friend? My family owns a hospital nearby and we could take her there.ā
Akko felt Andrewās hand supporting her suddenly tense. āGeh- Cavendish...ā
āMy, Sir Hanbridge. Date?ā
āCousin.ā
āHmm...ā
Oh? Someone... A lady? What a nice voice. Somehow it was comforting to Akko. It felt warm, it felt kind, it felt gentle. For a voice to feel something rather than sound like something, Akko must really be out of it.
Hands.
Careful, tender.
āA-An... wha-ā
āAkko! Donāt talk. Just rest.ā
āAkko, huh. Is that her name? Miss Akko?ā
āmmrm?ā
āYouāll be alright.ā
That voice. Akko wanted to believe it. Who...
Soft. Soft. Akko was leaning against something soft.
āYouāāll be alright.ā Was said again.
āAkko, youāll be alright.ā Ah, Andrew. But somehow, Akko would rather hear those words from the other person currently holding her in her arms. She felt bad. Not just in the sick kind of way. What was she supposed to do again? Oh right, she was helping Andrew. Where was she? Was she causing trouble? Ah, what if she was bothering this sweet-smelling, comfortable-feeling, gentle-sounding lady.
āHey... you...ā Hmm, her voice wasnāt quite working like it should. Maybe she should try to express herself again. Clearing her terribly scratchy and dry throat, she managed to croak out a single word.
āSo...rry...ā
āItās alright.ā
//-//-//-//-//
White ceiling, the absence of sticker-stars. Dim lighting, the low thrum of the air conditioner unit, and the occasional sound of something dripping. The scent of antiseptic.
Her right hand felt uncomfortable, like something was stuck in it. She lifted it up, seeing a slim tube running out of some secure, clear tape.
āYouāre in the hospital, idiot.ā
āNever a quiet moment with you, Andrew.ā
A sigh. āI was worried.ā
ā...Mm. Iām sorry...ā
āYou didnāt tell me you were feeling unwell.ā
āI wasnāt.ā
āDonāt lie.ā
āCouldnāt tell.ā
āAkko!ā
āSay, Andrew. Who was with you earlier?ā
āDonāt change the subject, Akko- huh?ā Reprimanding words died on the boyās lips as the question sunk in. āAhhh.ā Recollections of earlier events came in. āThe daughter of the owner of this place.ā He threw in a few other details he thought Akko would want to know. āHigh-class lady. This place does too.ā He decided to humor her queries, knowing she didnāt want to argue with Andrew anymore. He didnāt either, not when she was like this. A time and place for everything.
āHmm...ā Akko hummed, sitting upright and looking out the window. Andrew panicked, stepping forward, but Akko shooed her cousin away. āShe sounded nice.ā Akko commented. āWas she pretty?ā Somehow her mind wanted to know. Her heart was clenching in some unknown need to know more about a voice she barely registered, a touch she fleetingly felt.
āYou could say that. I guess to most, sheād be considered gorgeous?ā Andrew mused. āWeird hair though.ā Was added as an afterthought.
āHeh...ā
āCurious?ā He didnāt say it in a teasing town, only genuinely inquisitive at Akkoās not-so-subtle expression of interest in someone she barely even met.
āNo? Not really.ā She responded, everything becoming still. āCan I go home?ā
āOnce your tests come in.ā
āHow long have I been here?ā
āOvernight.ā
āMama and dad?ā
āDropped by while you were asleep. Uncle was sobbing buckets, but Auntie dragged him out because they both had work. They paid off the bill and said theyāll see you when we all get home.ā
Akko sighed, dropping back against her pillows. āI canāt believe Iāve caused so much trouble in a span of, what, three days?ā Covering her face with one of the pillows, she screamed lightly into it, the muffled sound concerning Andrew. āI have to apologize a lot to them. Have to make it up to them... I even had them spend a lot of money on -ow! Andrew!ā
Retracting the hand he used to chop her head, Andrew huffed. āStop that. Your parents love you, youāre not a bother. Shut it. If you really want to make it up to them, get some rest right now as we wait, and get better soon. I suggest you make some dinner if youāre well enough.ā He knew she often had insecurities, and tried her best not to bother people so much. Heād observed it from her relationship with her two best friends. She really was just a ball of energy that she couldnāt help but cause scenes, though. People hardly minded, anyway. If only she realized.
āDuly noted.ā
Andrew nodded, walking over to the bed and sitting at the edge, whipping his head about to glare at the Ā owner of the leg that had just attempted to kick him off.
āYouāre making the foam awkwardly sink. Itās uncomfortable. Youāre inconveniencing the patientās recovery.ā Akko grinned, trying to get rid of the stuffy atmosphere that had settled by stirring up another banter session.
āCould you settle down for once?ā
āI mean, I could.ā
āUnbelievable.ā He chuckled. āFine, fine, Iāll give you your space. Iām going to the store. Want anything?ā He offered, since the ice-cream he initially was supposed to treat her to as thanks was long since forgone on some cemented floor, probably already cleaned up by the workers of the shop.
āOrange juice.ā
āCoffee? Understood.ā
āAss.ā
āThe good ass genes run in our family.ā
āOh my gosh, you did not just say that.ā Akko guffawed, waving her hands, eyes sparkling with pride at the crude joke of her prim and proper, perfect-gentleman cousin.
āI did not just say that.ā Andrew smirked. āNow rest before your fever comes back from all that tension you release. Good thing youāre off school for a while.ā
āDonāt remind me.ā
āIāll be back in fifteen.ā
āHai~ā
āDonāt disappear.ā
ā...ā
āAKKO!ā
āI wonāt, I wonāt!ā She giggled, dropping the tease. āNow scram!ā
āI swear to god...ā
And with that, she was alone again.
Great. More time alone with her thoughts. And what better way to occupy that blank space that was her mind then to fill it with all her doubts, insecurities, and questionings.
One particular question stood out at that moment.
āWho... was the owner of that voice...ā Along with that single question came a wave of interconnected ones that Akko could not understand. Why was there this sudden desire to just... know.
What did she look like? How tall was she? Was she fair-skinned? Tanned? Long hair? Short hair? Curled or not? How old was she? Were they the same age? Was she an older lady? Was she maybe in the same grade? From the haze that was her memories, it seemed Andrew knew her? An acquaintance? Why couldnāt he give Akko more details besides insulting that womanās hair? Where was she from? She had an accent. British? Scottish? Did she live around these parts? Why...
Why was Akko so curious?
Knock. Knock. Knock.
āAndrew, you know you can just, like... come in, right? You know I canāt even get up to open the door for yoouuu...huuu...ā With the door swinging open to reveal the person on the otherside, Akko could only hope that she did not appear to be the stupid-looking gay dance she most probably was. ā-...huuu...who...?ā
āBeautiful.ā
āI apologize for the intrusion, but I just wanted to check on you. Oh, you may not even know me, Iām sorry. I should probably introduce myself, isnāt that right? Oh blood hell, Andrew, telling me to check on someone I barely know because you want to go off somewhere...ā Akko heard her mutter that last bit under her breath before watching this gorgeous lady seemingly recover her senses. ā-Ah, apologies, um... sorry! Wow, I suppose Iām saying that too much, arenāt I? We didnāt exactly āmeetā earlier, but... I donāt know, I was probably meddling in issues not concerning me, but... I couldnāt help but want to help you out. It was an automatic reaction as someone who has wanted to be a healthcare professional all my life, and I was so used to it, and then it just so happened to be Andrew and... well, you and- and I-ā Fair skin, lithe, fairly tall frame, a melodic voice, gorgeous blue eyes hidden by long lashes and ...strange hair, due to an immediate bow upon spotting the confused gaze of the patient; this person was...
āYouāre rambling, miss.ā
Said Miss bristled, expression flustered and eyes darting about in her embarrassment. āS-sorry.ā
Akko panicked at the saddened apology. She just made a pretty girl sad! āN-no! I-ā Their eyes met and then it was one of the most magical and equally painful moments of Akkoās life, she concluded. āHi.ā
āHello.ā The girl nodded back in acknowledgement.
āAkko.ā She blurted out. Then just like that she witnessed a world wonder contained in such a small room, in just one girl. There was just something in the way her eyes lit up that pleased Akko very much. It was as though she was the catalyst for such a breath-taking phenomena. Blue stars, passionately burning, brightly so, like her favorite celestial bodies. ā...Rigel...ā She murmured.
āHuh?ā
āOh? Huh? Eh, um...ā Arms flapping about, she tried to graps control of the conversation, not knowing where it was going anymore. āUh, my... name! My name is Akko! Ahaha, sorry ābout that.ā --She scratched the back of her head sheepishly with the hand not attached to the IV tube.
āMiss Akko... Rigel?ā She tilted her head, and by gods that was the cutest thing Akko had ever seen in her life. But Wait-
āOh! No, nono... no hahaha.ā She laughed, waving her hands in front of her, realizing that what she said had been mistaken as her name.
āI... My name is Kagari Atsuko, but you can call me Akko.ā She clumsily reintroduced herself.
āAnd Rigel...?ā
āIs a blue star that is put to shame when in comparison to your ethereal ocean eyes-ā
āOh, itās just... just a star I like, hahaha...ha..ha.ā She needed to save this dying interaction, fast. She didnāt want this goddess of a lady to walk away just yet. Who was she? Why was Akko panicking so badly? Why was her heart running miles per second? Where did these confusing feelings stirring from her chest come from? Could this just be... Was this girl... Was she... could she be who Akko thought she was? She didnāt even know her name yet, but the way she made her feel, it was like some universal, natural phenomena that could only make sense in the context of... that. Who was she? Who was she? Who-
āDiana.ā
Diana, apparently.
āDiana.ā She tested, the name unfamiliar, but incredibly welcome and sliding off her tongue so naturally, and with ease. Like she was meant to know such a name all her life. āNice to meet you.ā
She patted herself on the back for a good greeting, with good manners, even happier when she received a soft smile in return.
āThe pleasure is all mine.ā
āNo, no, the pleasure is mine, I mean... pleasure, Iām... feels good to meet you, I mean, because you saved me and all, from what I can understand, so pleasure, good feels- no- what am i saying?! Iām sorry, Diana, er miss? Diana? Miss Diana?ā
āDiana is fine.ā
Diana was indeed SO fine.
āTh-thank you for being so beautiful.ā
āWhat?ā
āTha-thanks for saving me, I mean, helping Andrew out in saving me, but that means you saved me too, so I just thought I should properly thank you and all that and express gratitude because thatās the right thing to do, amiright? And of course Iām right so thank you, Diana, thanks for everything, and the hospital and the room and all, oh but you donāt own it, but your family does, so does that mean you own it-ā
āAkko.ā
āYes?!ā
āYouāre rambling, Akko.ā
Akko was a burning hot mess of foolishness, but if it prompted such heavenly giggles from such an angel- no a goddess, alongside her name that sounded divine coming from soft pink lips- that she was absolutely not staring at- then she hardly minded at all.
And then there was silence.
āSo...ā
āSo...ā
Diana awkwardly shuffled on her spot, the tip of her shoe tapping against the floor impatiently, hand fiddling with a button on her shirt. It took so much willpower for Akko not to direct her eyes there.
āI guess Iāll get going.ā
āA-already?ā
āEh?ā
āEh?ā
āAh... I mean... if you have... stuff to do, I guess... I... shouldnāt be stopping you or anything of the sort, right?ā
Akko didnāt like that frown, however miniscule it was, on Dianaās face.
āI... Iām a little busy, I apologize.ā She spoke softly. Akkoās heart clenched, and she cursed her insensitive ways. āBut... I can come back tomorrow? If youād like?ā -And it leaped up in joy just as quick. More time! More Diana! More getting to know her!
āY-Yes! Of course! Iāll wait here for you! Pinky swear! I- woah...ā The world was suddenly spinning, and Akko had to lean back for a moment, vision swimming in color.
āAkko!ā
Said girl was beginning to get addicted to the feeling of Dianaās presence by her side. That was not necessarily a good or bad thing. She couldnāt get attached to her, not when she knew nothing about her. She couldnāt... be acknowledging these feelings blossoming out of nowhere without confirmation of whether or not this person was meant to be hers, and she was meant to be with as well. But she was addicting, Diana. A strong drug. Just one whiff and she was high on her existence.
āGeez, you should be resting. Iām sorry for bothering you, and keeping you up this long.ā
Akko heard none of those words. Akko was curious. So Akko just had to check. Hands weakly grasping Dianaās cooler ones, fingers roamed, feeling around until they touched even colder metal... on Dianaās... left... hand.
āAkko?ā The concern was palpable in her voice, Akkoās senses blurring the world out as her hands dropped to her side.
Frustrating.
She somehow hoped what sheād been experiencing these past few minutes were the signs of her finding her soulmate, but it seemed as though she may have been wrong. Maybe it was simply infatuation, or a shameless lust overtaking her in her weakened state.
It shouldnāt be this frustrating.
It shouldnāt be this painful.
She shouldnāt have been so impatient and jumped to subconscious conclusions.
Diana had already found her soulmate. Just like everyone else.
Everyone but Akko.
//-//-//-//-//
When she came to, it was dark. She felt much better than she had yesterday, and earlier on today. Turning to her right, she saw Andrew seated on a chair, back facing her as he was conversing with someone.
āI wonder what got into that girl? Her new friend seemed worried.ā That voice...
āMama.ā
āYou mean Diana?ā
Akko flinched at the name.
āIs that her name? My, she was so cute. If you werenāt already matched to someone, Andrew, I think youād look good together.ā Akko felt a twinge in her chest, only slightly soothed by the sound of Andrew choking on something, his drink maybe. Tea? Coffee?
āIād rather not be involved with her like that.ā Andrew responded after composing himself.
āEehh-ā
Akko couldnāt listen any longer. The pain of everything was just starting to come back. She just wanted to get away. Away from this place that kept reminding her of her chance encounter. She just wanted to go home. She just wanted to hug her mama.
āMa...ma...ā Her voice warbled. āMama...ā She tried, louder. Somehow her voice was so weak, the thought of it not being able to reach the person she trusted the most in the world, hurt. āMa... ma... mama! Mamaaa...ā Slowly, she regained her voice, cracked and unsteady. And finally she was heard. āMama!ā
āAkko!ā Before Akko could even blink again, the woman was at her side, a hand brushing bangs away to clear her warm forehead, a refreshing kiss planted there. āAkko, my baby.ā
āM-mama... Mamaaa...ā She moaned out, engulfing the woman in her tight hold, sinking into a familiar scent. āMama...ā
āYes, Yes. Iām here. Iām here, Akko.ā She cooed, hands combing through chocoloate-colored tresses.
āMama.ā
āYes?ā
āI wanna go home.ā
āEh? But you arenāt okay yet-ā
āPlease. Let me go home...ā
She felt her mother pull back. She couldnāt face the eyes seeking hers. āAkko? Whatās wrong, sweetheart? Youāre not feeling well, and yet you want to go home before you get better. Is something the matter?ā Akko couldnāt lie to those.
But she could try.
āI just think Iāll be able to rest better at home. My... my fever isnāt that bad.ā
āBut you were just crying out for me...ā
āI was just... feeling lonely. Please, Mama. Letās go home.ā She couldnāt say it was because she didnāt want to meet a certain lady, weird blonde hair and enchanting blue stars never leaving her memory. āPlease...ā Because more than the pain inflicted by her sickness, she couldnāt stand the squeezing of her heart, its labored pounding more burdensome than the throbbing in her head. āPlease, mama.ā
āAkko...ā
āDonāt be such a selfish brat.āAndrew scolded, eyes burning into the Akkoās skin. āDidnāt you just say you didnāt want to cause anyone trouble?ā
Akko deflated in her motherās embrace, and the elder boy sighed. He really hated seriously hurting Akko, especially emotionally. āBut... We can leave first thing in the morning tomorrow, if you prove to be alright.ā He turned the other way, hiding his expression from the girl. āSo just get better.ā
āAndrew...ā
āGet better soon.ā
//-//-//-//-//
It was against institutional rules to be running about in the building at any given time. Crowded or cleared, the halls were not made for such dangerous sport. Workers constantly made their way through these corridors; some pushing wide carts carrying planned food and beverage for every patient in the hospital; some nurses walked along with important, and sometimes painstakingly prepared medicine and treatments for patients that Diana threatened to compromise should she bump into them. In other areas she could risk bumping into one of the sanitary maintenance people, infectious waste at the risk of being spilled all over.
And Diana grew aware of all these things, surrounded by them from a tender age. Yet at this moment, she was in complete disregard for them, her footsteps rushed and padding softly against a marbled floor. Her eyes scanned every plaque above each door she passed, counting off the numbers, and reading the letters, her trip on autopilot.
One more corner, just the end of that corner. If she rounded that, then walked past three more rooms- She was feeling a regretful that she couldnāt come by earlier, the colors of the afternoon sky telling her just how close she was cutting it to the end of visiting hours. Curse all the school-transfer procedures she had to sit through. They didnāt need to take that long, did they? But she had made a promise of sorts. She had promised her new... friend, Akko that sheād come by and see her. She must not keep her waiting. She didnāt quite understand what it was that made her so happy about the prospect that the other girl actually wanted to see her- Diana assumed as such with how she was acting yesterday. Really... it was amazing.
Diana herself couldnāt deny that she saw something different in Akko, a substance far beyond what others could offer her that suddenly shifted the usual motions of her world upon meeting this girl. All her life, so many people came along trying to woo her, claiming that she was the one defined by their flimsy phrases that never moved her heart. āBeautiful lassā, ādoctorās daughterā, titles among other things. She had even found out a few faked rings that had been promptly reported to authorities for the grave sin committed. Thus, Diana could trust no words written on silly little rings; only the one written on her own, worn about her left ring finger.
She hadnāt found her soulmate, no. And maybe this was against the universal rules of whatever matchmaking system had engulfed society, but Diana did not want to be caught in a trap of a forever she could not escape unless she was absolutely sure that this was it. Maybe it would be unfair to her soulmate; maybe it would throw them off; maybe they wouldnāt realize right away; but if there was one thing Diana believed in that was rooted in this entire system, it was that if you met the one meant for you, you would know.
Her mother told her so. And Diana trusted her motherās words above all other words.
One more door, one more plaque. Diana readied a hand to knock against closed-...open? The door was... open. Did Akko have visiting doctors? They sometimes left doors open for quick checks to save time during rounds. But no, that did not seem to be the case. She was surprised to see one of the cleaning personnel of the hospital folding up the sheets of the bed, passing it to his companion before they changed the covers.
Approaching an elderly male of the pair currently clearing the room out of any trash possibly left behind, Diana respectfully inquired, āUm sir? Where is the occupant of this room?ā.
āHmm? Ah! Young Miss, what are you doing here? Oh, were you perhaps the friend of the little girl staying here recently?ā
āYou... could say that.ā Diana muttered, unsure.
āOh, then she must have just forgotten to tell, you ey? Already left, yāsee. The little miss, along with her mother and some fine lookinā gentleman. Do you think that could be āer soulmate? Ah~ young, concerned love.ā
Diana tasted an inexplicable bitterness in her mouth, heart squeezing. āY-young man?ā
āMm-mm! Handsome fella, looked kinda familiar, but maybe Iām just getting it on in years.ā
That... couldnāt be, right? While Diana wasnāt one to be guided purely by feeling, priding in her rationality, she just knew that that couldnāt be. After all... Akko was the only one sheād ever felt this strongly for in the lifetime sheās lived so far. Sheād swear on her familyās motto of āaffectionā that sheād only offer her fullest romances to the one the universe had destined for her, corny as that may sound.
She just knew it. She just knew it was Akko.
So who-
Andrew.
She suddenly chuckled. Of course. Who else could that young chap accompanying Akko be? He was the one who came with Diana to the hospital, he was the one who had told her go take that first visit. So of course, logically, without a doubt, the man that Akko should have been with was Andrew. Of course.
And there was nothing to worry about, soulmate-wise. Diana knew Andrew already had someone. Sheād met up with them constantly at banquets. There was no obstacle, no other person for Akko. Right?
Akko... Akko who wasnāt here. In this room. Gloom encompassed her heart as she stared at the room dimming bit-by-bit as the staff turned off the lights. They told her that they should get leaving, and Diana nodded, informing them sheād just do one last look over the room for any possible missed items, then sheād lock the room herself, to which the workers reluctantly agreed, unable to go against the ownerās daughter. Well, she was known to be a good kid, so nothing should be wrong with that.
Diana, now left alone, remained stood by the doorway that served as the only light source to the room for a few more seconds. It wasnāt like constantly looking into it would magically make the one she was seeking appear, huh? With a deep exhale, she closed the door behind her, frown tugging at the edges of her mouth.
āYou said youād wait for me.ā
//-//-//-//-//
Scritch. Scratch. A line, then two. A squiggle, a letter. A bubble from brew-
...huh?
āArenāt you supposed to be helping me with my homework?ā Akko frowns at her companion currently mixing questionable substances on her floor-table in her room. āThat is why youāre here, right?ā
āCourse not. What fun would that be?ā
āShouldāve known better than to invite you over.ā Akko muttered under her breath, getting back to the unending pile of chemistry homework she was sure Croix assigned to them out of spite. āAnd how did you finish this all, anyway?ā
āIām smart like that.ā
āYouāre mean like that. Why canāt you help me out at least?ā
āI believe that learning for yourself is the best teacher.ā Sucy replied, emotionless as always.
āNo you donāt.ā
āTrue.ā
āHah...ā Akko gave up. Forget getting help from Sucy. That wasnāt a possible feat, now that she thought about it clearly. The girl was just bored out of her mind so she easily agreed to come over. Akko was sure of it. Without Lotte in the house, and on their fifth and final schoolday away, Sucy- who had slowly gotten used to the concept of companionship- must have just wanted someone around, regardless of whether there was flowing conversation or not.
āAkko?ā Andrewās voice came from behind the door. Finally! A distraction! Wait, wasnāt Akko avoiding Andrew lately? Why was she avoiding him lately? āAkko?ā
āCome in!ā
ā...huh? Youāre actually letting me in?ā The muffled voice asked, door now ajar. āHey Akko, so... about what Iāve been telling you all week...ā He began, looking nervous, and Akko had to wonder why. āSo my friend, Diana, she-ā
Ah. Right.
Thatās why.
Quick on her feet, Akko gunned for the door, pushing it forcefully, and locking Andrew out, the boyās yells the only things making it through the barrier.
āAkko! Akko! OH, COME ON! Weāve been at this the whole week!ā
āAnd I told you this whole week, I donāt wanna hear it!!!ā Akko hollered back.
āBut WHY?!ā Andrewās exasperation oozed out of his voice. āJust give me a reason! Give her a reason! From what Iāve heard, you seemed to have hit it off pretty well?ā
āSays who?ā Akko asked.
āDiana!ā Andrew didnāt like yelling, but Akko was being so hard-headed after he mentioned his blonde acquaintance. āJust what happened between you two?ā
āNothing! Nothing happened!!!ā
āThen why does she keep bugging me about you, and why are you avoiding her like the plague?!ā
...Why was Akko avoiding Diana? Was there any reason to? Theyād met just the other day, had the most awkward conversation in her life to date, and then Akko felt something. Something she shouldnāt have, and let her hopes up, only to drop them lower than where they already were; and none of that was Dianaās fault. If anything, Diana could have proven to be another great friend sheād make along the way in life, yāknow?
Akko didnāt know. She didnāt know what was going on; within herself, within her mind and her heart, in that one moment frozen in time between her and Diana, in a silent hospital room.
āI donāt know, Andrew. I donāt.ā
Sucyās potion stopped brewing.
//-//-//-//-//
āMY MADLADS! I MISSED YOU UGLY FACES!ā
āUgh, Amanda.ā
āOi!ā
Akko grinned, messing up Amandaās fiery mane in comfort from being rejected by Sucy. āMissed you too, Amanda.ā A high-five rang out through the school lobby, the two energetic troublemakers missing that burning feeling on their palms.
āBut man, you guys sure missed a lot. Who knew a week without yāall could turn the school upside-down.ā Amanda whistled, their small group of eight finally assembling complete as Jasminka and Constanze walked up.
The small girl gave Akko this look that she completely understood, giving the girl a big thumbs up, and receiving a smile and nod. Jasna held out a lollipop which Akko gratefully accepted, and they all made their way to the corridors.
Suddenly registering what Amanda said a few moments ago, Akkoās interest was piqued. āWhat did you mean by turning the school upside-down?ā She wondered just how much a school could change for her who was out for a week.
āOh, well, maybe I was exaggerating a tiny bit.ā Amanda chuckled, scratching her cheek. āJust that, some new girl came along and now everyone is all head over heels for her somehow.ā Amanda fake-cried, sniffling up some. āShe even stole my babes! Along with all my popularity!!!ā
That earned her two smacks to the head from two certain British girls. āWe already told you, she was our childhood friend! Of course weāre inclined to keep her company and show her around!ā They defended, scoffing. āBesides, you didnāt mind ogling her at all the other day, huh? You should feel grateful we let you in our dorm the other day.ā
āB-babies...ā
āOof. You brought that on yourself, hot stuff.ā Sucy grinned, wickedly. āBut now Iām curious. If she could even catch Amandaās eyes then...ā
āTotal hottie.ā Jasminka commented through a mouthful of chips. āEveryone can vouch for that.ā
āWoah, even Jas...ā Akko laughed lightly. āAlrighty, letās meet this new kid in town then! Where is she and whatās her name?ā Just as they were about to pass the headmistressā office and head for their homeroom, a hand tugged at the brunetteās collar, along with Sucyās.
āWait a second, you two. Youāre supposed to report to Professor Holbrooke first, right?ā Lotte, ever the dutiful friend, reminded.
āAh dang, right.ā Akko scratched her cheek, throwing Sucy a beckoning glance. āGuess itās better to just get it over with.ā She shrugged.
āWhatever.ā
āSee you all in class!ā Akko waved goodbye, smiling as Lotte left a peck on her pale friendās cheek, enjoying her rarely flustered state. Her heart warmed when Lotte gave her one two, patting the blondeās hair fondly. āThanks, Lotte.ā
āAnytime.ā
With their friends out of sight, they faced the suddenly intimidating doors.
āNow or never.ā
//-//-//-//-//
āIām glad we got excuse slips for being tardy to class. I do not want more yelling. Though I guess Prof Chariot wouldnāt do that, huh.ā
āWhat did you say? I think Iāve gone deaf.ā Sucy complained, rubbing her pained ears. āFinneran yaps like a bitch.ā
āOI! Donāt let her hear you say that!ā
āDonāt worry, Iām not up for more ācounseling and healthy remindersā.ā Sucy mockingly mimicked the strict teacher. āChrist, that woman must be senile.ā
āShhh, weāre almost at the classroom.ā Akko hushed her bestfriend, door coming into view. She could hear a Professor Chariots distinct voice posing a question to the class, and there was a quiet that Akko knew was due to no one knowing the answer, not very uncommon.
But then there was one. A voice very uncommon, but somehow familiar, attracting, pulling her in. With her curiosity getting the better of her, Akko slid the door open, planning to softly sneak into class, forgetting that the roomās backdoor had a tendency to-
SCRREEEEECCHHHH
...that.
āH-hi? S-sorry weāre late?ā Akko tried, dozens of eyes now resting on them, most surprised. But one pair stood out the most. āShe looks good in our uniform.ā Akkoās jaw hung slack, a fight or flight response hesitantly building up within her. Her legs tensed, ready to bolt or stay rooted depending on the next move the one she was staring at made. ā...Rigel...ā
ā...Akko.ā
Then a hand reached out, and she was gone. Like the wind.
//-//-//-//-//
It had been a difficult week. Amanda was definitely right when she said things had been turned upside-down. Akko felt like she was too. So Hannah and Barbaraās childhood, hottie, transfer student, best friend just so happened to be Diana. Diana, Akko met her in the hospital and became enraptured with, Diana.
This posed a problem, along with unbearable tension within their group. Akko would always want to run away, and Diana would always seek after her. After awhile, the blonde grew weary, and just distanced herself, her childhood bestfriends obviously sticking by her side. Amanda had girlfriends to attend to. And Constanze and Jas usually followed Amanda. So now, it was just Sucy, Lotte, and little olā Akko. Like old times.
āAkko, just why are you avoiding Miss Cavendish? How do you know her?ā Lotte asked on their way home. āPlease? Tell us? I canāt stand to not spend time with the other girls anymore just because you two are at unknown odds. Youāre a kind person, Akko. And Miss Cavendish is as well, from how Iāve gotten to know her lately.ā
āLotte, you... you wouldnāt get it.ā Akko sighed. She was tired of entertaining Diana-related questions. All the āwhy donāt you two get alongā interrogations wearing her down thin: with Andrew at home, and Hannah and Barbara indirectly hounding her in school at every chance theyād get, trying to fish out for an answer that Diana couldnāt give to them herself, apparently. Not that Akko blamed her. She must just be as confused as everyone else with regards to Akkoās averse reactions.
āM-maybe I could try?ā Akko missed the shift in the Finās tone, irritation over the week threatening to make her lose self-control and lash out. But no, she couldnāt do that. Not too sweet Lotte. She still had her senses intact.
āNo, Iām sure you wouldnāt.ā She firmly stated through gritted teeth, not looking at Lotte as she replied, so unlike her.
āI-I-ā
āAkko, Lotte just wants to understand you.ā Sucy stepped in, feeling that change in the air that she didnāt quite fancy. āWhy canāt you just tell us? I know I may not act like it a lot, but arenāt we your best friends?ā Akko held back a hiss behind pearly whites. She didnāt want to be a bad person. She had to be considerate of peopleās feelings. Like always. Everyone was just curious. They were all just confused... but then Sucy had to just say, āDonāt you trust us?ā
And Akko couldnāt hear that.
āI trust you! I do!ā She whipped her head about, pointing a finger to them one-by one. āBut you guys, you wouldnāt get it because you have your soulmate by your side constantly, okay?!ā
āAkko...ā Lotteās eyes widened.
āI... Iāve been waiting a lot, and I know you said Iām being impatient. It doesnāt have to be now.ā Akko huffed. āBut do you know how it feels to look at all of you, all happy with someone who can love you completely? Understand you completely? I donāt have that! Not yet! And sure, somewhere down the future road, I might.... and itās stupid of me, but Iām a lot more jealous and selfish than I look, okay? Everyone has nice words, and has met the person those words described perfectly, at the designated time, normally, as the book says.ā
āAkko, the book doesnāt completely control everything-ā
āAnd here I am, always subconsciously looking around, because maybe my person is out there too, yāknow? But how the heck do I know?ā A hand reached for the chain on her neck, ripping it out of her shirt so hard, it broke, the ring flying onto the ground. āStupid! Stupid chain! Stupid Ring! Stupid words! Akko marched the few steps to the item, bending and snatching it off the ground, hand going in too hard, too fast that she scraped her knuckles badly in the process, the area quickly leaking red. āSh- damn it, stupid- gaahhh!ā
āA-Akko.ā
Lotte stepped back, retracting the hand that had been reaching out for the heated Japanese girl, stomping at the ground. This... wasnāt an Akko she knew. How many years of pent up frustration was going into this session?
āYou guys,ā Her eyes were scary, sharp and menacing. Sucy jumped in front of Lotte at the sight of Akkoās bloodied knuckles coming their way at eye-level. But then it stopped. āYou havenāt seen it, right? My words.ā
They couldnāt even react.
āCabbage.ā Akko spat. āGoddamn cabbage. How am I supposed to know what that fucking means. How are you guys supposed to understand when... I canāt either... these words... myself... why Iām so impatient... what Iām feeling... Why... I thought it couldāve been Diana, but...ā
ā...but what, Akko?ā Lotte hated how scared she sounded, seeing Akko flinch, knowing her friend noticed her fear. She knew how afraid of hurting her friends Akko was. This was all just a shock. Thatās all. āWhatās... whatās with Diana, Akko? Diana and you?ā She posed the earlier question for the last time. Was Akko hinting at what she thought it was?
āShe wears it on her left.ā
//-//-//-//-//
Orange juice didnāt taste as good when you drank it alone on the stairwell leading to the roof. It would have been better had she been able to stand under the cloudy mid-day sun, the refreshing breeze taking her mind off things. But then it just had to rain, hard, and that ruined all her plans of clearing her mind via the healing powers of nature. Maybe she shouldnāt have told Sucy and Lotte to stay away and give her space. Having no one to talk to really sucked. More so than the strange word on her stupid government-issued ring.
āAhhh, should I just go and apologize to everyone?ā She muttered, squeezing the juicebox she thought sheād emptied, but did not know had bits of liquid left. The purely concentrated citrus then spilled onto her exposed, skinned knuckles, making her hiss in pain. āTsk, stupid. Grrr!ā
āAh-!ā
āAh?ā The yelp caught her attention. She was alone in this place, right? āHello?ā
No response.
āAnyone there?ā The only ones replying to her were the winds that howled behind the metal door that led to open roof. Those sounds were starting to sound like how sheād imagined ghosts would in the dead of night. āHelloooo~ā
Still nothing.
āMaybe it was just my imagination?ā
āSTAY AWAY!ā
Okay, that was NOT her imagination. That was a girl. Looking around for some kind of weapon, Akko readied herself to beat up whatever girl-harassing creep sheād find once she rounded the bend in the stairwell. Holding up a sturdy wooden broom, she tiptoed down, steps making no sound.
On three, sheād jump and smack the living shit out of whoever was there. One... two...
āAkko, please save me!ā
And she slipped and fell in her surprise; her back was going to hurt like hell over the next few days. Alas! She must stay vigil! Save whoever this damsel in distress was- Diana... It was Diana. Diana Cavendish, as sheād learned the girlās name, and a few other trivial details about her, over the course of their time not together. (Akko also denies any and all claims that state that she spent a lofty amount of time observing the taller girl. She didnāt know things like how she was Scottish, or how she loved horses and anything that looked like a unicorn, and that she was intelligent, and smelled like vanilla and mint.)
āIāll save you?ā She managed in her ruffled state. Before she could process anything more, the girl had clung to her, both now laying on the floor; one in an utter state of bewilderment, and the other... dealing with whatever it was she got going on before Akko had found her. āUmm... Diana?ā She tried, forgetting her phobia of the girl over the past few days, and rubbing her back gently to gain her attention. She was shaking like the leaves outside in the storm. Just what had happened. āDiana? Whatās wrong? What am I saving you from?ā
There were no signs of any bad guys, as far as Akko could see. She was grateful for that. She wasnāt sure she could defend them in this position.
āMiss Cavendish? Heir to a billion-dollar hospital? Whatās up?ā She was trying to be nonchalant in an attempt to possibly calm the girl, and it worked somewhat, allowing her to see that beautiful face, tear-stained and all. āH-Hi.ā How lame.
āAkko... the... there... it...ā
āHmm?ā She lent an open ear, looking around, still not seeing any signs of danger. Then a well-manicured finger came up and pointed to one of the panels of the hallwayās windows. Akko squinted, not seeing anything. Had Diana seen some kind of floating ghost outside? Or was she seeing it inside, and Akko didnāt have the sixth sense for it? Did Diana have some kind of sixth sense? āWhat exactly...ā
āB...ā
āBuh..?ā
āBee.ā She squeaked.
Akko gawked.
āBee.ā
āB-bee.ā
āBee?ā
āBee!ā
āB-ā
āAkko, please just get it away! Iām scared!ā
āY-yes, maāam!ā She scrambled to her feet, but not without gently seating Diana up, even if it was on the dirty corridor floor. Opening the window and grimacing as strong winds blew droplets of water into her face, Akko shooed the poor insect into natureās claws of death. āSorry, buddy. Princess doesnāt seem to like you.ā Blowing it a kiss, she shut the window, wiping her face on the sleeve of her jacket.
Now... to face a larger problem... or not face it. Maybe Akko should get running again.
She should.
āWell, this was nice and all that, but I guess I should get- ouch!ā Diana had caught her hand in alarm, accidentally pressing against her open, yet-to-heal wounds.
āM-my apologies!ā
āItās f-fine. Itās okay, please let... let go.ā Akko didnāt like the way her heartrate spiked in Dianaās presence. It grew even more erratic, wildly jumping every which way in her chest as her hand was held more gently, blue eyes scrutinizing the reddened skin, the heiress didnāt seem to have any plans of releasing her. āDiana?ā
āMay I... May I treat you? That blue sparkle was redirected from her knuckles to her own dark reds. They were so hopeful and compelling that Akko, despite thinking that avoiding Diana would kill whatever held-back, buds of feelings she hoped to dash, just couldnāt help but consent, cursing the way her chest lightened, heart soaring.
She was absolutely doomed.
//-//-//-//-//
It was a quiet affair.
Torturous. No one said a word. To be fair, theyāve only had two somewhat proper conversations so far, so not knowing how to break the ice shouldnāt be that odd.
But it was, and Akko couldnāt take it. Diana had just finished cleaning Akkoās wounds under the sink in the infirmary, and was now dabbing them gently with antiseptic. She was so careful, touches feather-like soft. Akko barely felt anything, much less pain. So maybe she could start with talking about that. Maybe.
āYou... Youāre hands are real nice.ā
āH-huh?āAnd down fell the cottonball sheād been holding.
āI-I mean... youāre really good at this. Tender and all that. Youād... make a good doctor.ā Akko commented off the top of her head, running out of things to say, as she always did when faced with one Diana Cavendish. āA pretty doctor. Patients would... probably feel healed just from your... face. Or something.ā Smooth, Akko. Smooth. Could Diana, like... at least help her out a little by responding? āPlease say something.ā Akko begged in a whisper.
āO-oh, I... thank you, Akko. Thank you for the compliment. I...ā Momentarily lifting her eyes and meeting Akkoās gaze, the blonde averted hers, a thin touch of red spreading up to her ears, not unnoticed by the injured Japanese. āI appreciate your words.ā
Akko hummed, not trusting her mouth to communicate properly anymore.
āI think youāre... face is a healing balm as well.ā
Akko felt herself blush as well, head tilting up so she could face the ceiling. It was one of the most brainless compliments sheād ever heard in her life, and she knew she just said something along those lines as well. And yet it made her heart flutter like nothing else had before.
āDonāt mention it and... thanks.ā
//-//-//-//-//
You never know when an event becomes a catalyst for reality to undergo great changes. Their little bandaging session had returned the next day. Akko was quite clumsy with these types of things. Each time sheād gotten hurt in an accident, sheād always ask Lotte to do it... but today... all their friends, and even the classmates theyād unintentionally dragged into their awkward little world, were staring in awe as Kagari Atsuko stood in front of Diana Cavendishās desk, inviting her out to the infirmary.
āI-Iām just having her help me with my bandages! Donāt get the wrong idea!ā Akko yelled as she guided Diana out, unknowingly holding her hand all the while. No one commented on it. Not even Barbara and Lotte who were exchanging curious little smiles. Something was changing. And it was a good change.
Reaching the infirmary, Akko headed straight for the sink, rinsing her knuckles under clean water while Diana gathered what she needed. Once done, they met by some chairs placed about the room and took a seat, the blonde girl looking over Akkoās hand.
āCome tomorrow, you might not need to bandage it anymore. Just apply some ointment. I think the nurse can recommend something.ā Diana stated, looking up to smile at Akko who flushed at the attention.
āO-okay. I got it.ā
āGreat.ā She then got to work, applying what needed to applied, and wrapping the clean white bandage after. Diana did this in her usual silence, focused. Sort of. There was one thing that had been nagging her for quite some time now, ever since she got to take a better look at Akko, now that they attended the same school. It was a Ā unnerving, however. It hadnāt been long at all since they... āgot alongā, and Diana didnāt want to present something that might cause them to drift apart again. But it was eating at her, the need to know about it. It would determine how sheād interact with Akko from now on. It would show her what kind of relationship she was allowed to pursue. She needed a confirmation. She braced herself. Trying shouldnāt hurt. She could change the subject after testing the waters.
āAkko.ā
āHmm?ā Was the casual-sounding hum.
āSheās calm. Calmer around me.ā That little detail made Diana happy. So happy. This was progress. āMay I ask a question?ā
There was a pause, and Diana considered backing out. It appeared as though Akko was thinking about it deeply. Before Diana could take it back, Akko responded, āSure. Ask away.ā, and the heiress breathed a relieved sigh. āWhat did you wanna know?ā
āWell, um... I just happened to notice that... you donāt...ā Diana was really hoping this wasnāt a sensitive subject. Sheād finally managed to close the gap between her and Akko. Sure it was by unconventional, and very strange means- unintentional, above all. She had just been worried about the girl upon seeing that her friend group was all gathered in the classroom except her. So Diana had gone searching, and was planning to offer to stay away from her friends for Akkoās sake. She was glad that things turned out the way it did, though.
āDiana?ā
āUm... Akko.ā She finished her job, smiling at the neat covering on her.. friendās... hand. (They were friends now, right? At the very least...)
āYes?ā Akko seemed to notice the hesitation, and her instincts guided her to take hold of Dianaās trembling hands, encouraging her to continue.
Well this was new, Diana thought. Now or never, she supposes. A deep breath, and the floodgates opened.
āI just wondered... why... donāt you have a ring? Did you somehow lose it? Is that possible? But how? Wouldnāt you get in trouble with... everyone, I guess? Have you found your soulmate or not? If yes then I should probably just say goodbye here and, oh but not in the way you think, you might not get what I mean, but I still want to be friends-ā
āDiana.ā
āYes?ā
Akkoās cheeks puffed up, trying to hold it in, but ultimately failing as she burst into giggles, instinctively tucking a stray strand of hair behind Dianaās ear as she leaned forward to bump their foreheads together.
Ah, screw fate and itās ways. Screw Dianaās soulmate that existed somewhere out there. In this one moment, she just felt so at peace, and in place, sheād deal with all the raging storms in her mind later. For now, it was just the two of them, hanging out in an infirmary, the smell of antiseptic on them, stupid words be damned.
āYouāre rambling.ā
//-//-//-//-//
It had been a few weeks- maybe just shy of two months- of friendship (?) with Diana, and Akko had never felt more alive in all her years. They had even spent her birthday together! Well, everyone else was there to, but... Anyway. The afternoon the question had been dropped, she had ended up explaining to the Scot her story with the ring, leaving out the detail of what it had written on it. That was a little too embarrassing for her to share yet. Baby steps.
Sheād never dare ask about Dianaās ring, and she appreciated that the girl never brought up any soulmate talk that involved herself. Akko felt that it helped her cope with this one-sided love a little longer. She would no longer deny this attraction. She was so undeniably into Diana, it was crazy. She didnāt understand how teenage hormones and falling in love worked, but somehow she just knew. She felt a little apologetic to her soulmate, no longer feeling the need to search for him and her, the section of, [What to do if you havenāt found your soulmate yet.] remaining untouched. But well... things happen sometimes.
And sometimes, you become so much of a fool that you invite the girl you are in love with, who already has a soulmate, to your house, to your room, just so she can be the first to see that portable planetarium projector you were finally able to get your hands on for an affordable deal. You wouldnāt even cry at losing months worth of saved allowance and work wages. It was all worth it, to see her entire being practically glowing in awestruck wonder as you lay on your backs on the cushioned floor, having the chance to flaunt years of star study to your crush. The impressed gazed directed at you felt so good. You could get used to this. Especially when the visage of wonder glimmering in the dear girlās eyes was outright precious.
A Diana in awe was cute.
So much so that Akko was in awe.
āHey Diana...ā
āHmm?ā
āDo you believe in magic?ā
What a strange thing to ask in that moment. Thatās what Diana thought. Akko thought the same. Just what had gotten over her. Yet she still wondered, thoughts flying far off into space, just as they always did when she gazed upon the stars in the night sky- or her ceilingās artificial one.
āWhat are you saying, Akko?ā Diana chuckled, right hand reaching out to grasp Akkoās, fingers lacing together. She felt her heart flip as it was squeezed tight, unaware of the inner turmoil Akko was enduring at the lack of presence of a ring on that hand. Their eyes remained trained to the glowing heavenly bodies above, stories of the past, of fate, and the like, written all over.
āDo you believe in other worlds, Diana?ā
āWell, many studies propose that they indeed exist.ā Diana responded.
āWhat about alternate universes? A completely different you out there, living a different life.ā
Diana turned her head to face Akko, the brunette still facing upwards, eyes glistening with unshed tears, barely noticeable in the dim lighting; but Diana always noticed. Because it was Akko.
āDonāt you think that somewhere out there... there could be another version of us; maybe a clumsy me, and a fantastic you, saving the world with strange words not understood by the rest of the world?ā
āMaybe...ā Diana breathed out in a whisper, oxygen effectively stolen by the tear that slipped down shapely cheeks. The moment felt so fragile, she was afraid if she made a move, it would shatter into a million pieces, never to see the light of day.
And god forbid it happen. Diana wanted to boast this tender feeling out under the brightness of the sun, for the world to witness.
āWhy do you ask?ā
She listened in agony at the choked intake of air, followed by the frailest of whispers. āBecause maybe... the impossible for the Kagari Atsuko here... is possible for the Akko there.ā
The heiress pondered those phrases a moment. ā...Impossible, like?ā Diana replied in equally hushed tones, something hopeful in her pitch.
āLike you being meant for me, and I for you.ā
But Akko couldnāt just say that.
āAs impossible as using magic here, maybe?ā Akko laughed in a normal, in-house voice, volume not too loud, but no longer a whisper. She should just bury her illegal thoughts deep down.
āI guess so.ā She deflated. What had she desired to hear anyway? āMagic does seem like an unattainable power, some unimaginable, impossible concept.ā Maybe she should get ready to leave soon. There was something heavy weighing in the atmosphere and in her heart, and she did not wish for a memory as sweet as this to turn sour due to her mood.
āYou think so?ā Akkoās steadying voice kept her rooted in place. āWhat if it isnāt so impossible after all?ā
āHow so?ā
āWell, donāt they say that when people put their minds to it, when they truly desire and wish for it with all their hearts... like how the song goes, yāknow? āWhen you wish upon a star your dreams come trueā, or something.ā
āLike the law of attraction and manifestation?ā Diana supplied. āIf you think positive things, positive things will come to you. Your reality becomes better. Like that?ā
āHmmm...ā Akko tapped against the back of Dianaās hand, still entwined with hers, with her index thoughtfully. āYes, but no. Kinda, but not really...? I donāt know how to describe what Iām thinking at the moment based on existing principles. Not too good at remembering. Heck, is there a quote that already exists?ā
āWhy not make your own, then?ā Diana proposed.
āHeh... good idea. Let me think.ā
āTake your time.ā Diana enjoyed the little sounds Akko made as she thought.
āOh! I got it!ā
āHoh? And what would those words of wisdom be, Miss Kagari?ā
āReady the papers, Miss Cavendish. Weāre about to make the headlines with this!ā They both giggled at their antics. āDrum roll, please! Dugudugudugudugudugu....dan!ā
Diana nuzzled into Akkoās shoulder, enjoying all these little sound effects, the brunetteās voice calming her gradually, lulling her to sleep.
āJust what are these magnificent words, dear Akko?ā Diana was far too drowsy to notice the splash of color painted across her companions face, the shyness melting into tenderness as she felt her warmth shift closer.
āA believing heart is your magic.ā
And sleep was nearly robbed of her, eyes widening in the dark, unseen by Akko as the thumb on Dianaās free hand now brushed over the engravings on her ring. It was for sure now.
āYou really are... the one.ā
//-//-//-//-//
Something was off about Diana today. Was it her hair? No, impeccably styled as always, that couldnāt be it. Was it her makeup for today? No, it wasnāt that either. It was still that natural looking glow that brought out her innate beauty in all the best ways possible. Ā Akko continued to check off boxes on her mental list, trying to figure out just what it was that was bothering her about Dianaās appearance today. Was it her clothes? But that was the uniform they wore daily! Did she... get any new jewelry? Hmm, she didnāt seem the type to wear any at school.
Then...
Was it the ring that painfully reminded Akko that the person she might be in love with was already meant for someone else? No, that couldnāt be it either. Last Akko checked, the ring was snugly fitted, definitely on... huh? The ring was... gone? No? Akko scanned Dianaās smooth looking left hand. No it wasnāt there. Not on the left, and her eyes couldnāt help but guide her hopeful soul to... ah. It really wasnāt on the left, but on the right.
Huh? That wasnāt right.
This confused Akko. Enough to make her approach Dianaās seat during lunch, tapping her attention away from her conversation with Lotte and Barbara.
āH-hey Diana, I have a question... ā
āYes?ā Said girl gave Akko her full attention. There was something different about the way she smiled at Akko today as well, it seemed. Odd. Nice. But odd.
āSo like... uh... W-Why is your... your ri-ā Akko could feel droplets of sweat forming on her brow, threatening to trickled down the side of her face if she so much as twitched.
āRi?ā
āWhyās your ri- r....r-r- Right ear larger than your left?!ā
Dainty hands shot up to cover her ears, blushing shocked and mortified. āWHAT?!ā
Whoops, Akko messed up. āHAHA AHA.. KIDDING! Nah, I was messing with you!ā The brunette forcibly laughed, patting Dianaās back in uneasy comfort.
āAkko, that wasnāt very nice.ā Lotte scolded, and the said girl nodded, sighing.
āI know. Sorry guys.ā She apologized properly, looking to Diana in particular. She received a gracious smile and a pat on the cheek, the skin underneath the ringed-hand warming speedily.
āItās alright.ā
That kindness allowed her to gather bits of courage to finally state her inquiry. Diana would answer her just fine, right? Akko had to when asked about the whereabouts of her ring. It was fair trade?
āI was just wondering, because I recalled you wearing your ring on your left hand until recently. But now itās on your right. I guess you could say I was just curious?ā
āEh?ā
āIs that so, Diana?ā Hannah questioned, eyes wide. āBut why would you move it in reverse? Now that youāve actually found- mrrrpmmphhh.ā
Akko shot a puzzled glance at Hannah and Barbara, the latter clasping a hand over the gingerās mouth.
āN-nothing. You didnāt hear anything.ā She covered. āYou heard nothing, are we clear?ā She threatened, and Akko actually shivered.
āHoly crap, your women can get so scary, Amanda.ā She mentioned to the redhead seated in front of the other girls.
She heard her release a heavy sigh before getting up from her seat and turning to face the group. āItās because you two are such a pain, thatās why. Just get it over with, Cavendish! Whatās holding you back? Itās as simple as this, see? When you have a dense mofo like Akko, you just gotta give her a little push. A literal one.ā And that was the only warning they got before Diana felt soft, slightly chapped lips barely missing her own, brushing against the corner of her mouth.
Akko removed herself so fast, they all worried sheād get whiplash. āS-s-s-s-s-sorry! Sorry Diana, I didnāt- it was... AMANDA!ā
āI was helping.ā
āYou little...ā
āRather than giving me your attention, shouldnāt you talk it over with miss salad head over there?ā
Akko blinked, the cogs in her mind slowly spinning, then clicked. āDid you just... insult... ah, screw you!ā Akko yelled, blush burning so hot, it was hard to keep her eyes open.
Heeding Amandaās advice nonetheless, she turned to an equally red Diana, unable to meet her eyes. Akko didnāt think her face could get any hotter than it felt right now, but at the sight of Dianaās tongue quickly swiping across her lips, Akkoās face might as well be venus.
She should at least try to say something, right? Something comforting... or witty... or clever.
āSorry...ā That would work.
āItās alright.ā
//-//-//-//-//
She stared at her invitation. Wow. Did Andrew really take her to shop for Deniseās birthday gift months before it happened? The neat script spelling out, āYou are cordially invitedā underneath the older womanās name with the date of the ball kind of set her nerves on fire.
She was not one for formal events. But then Denise had been nice enough to hand it in person, looking like sheād be willing to beg for Akko to come. Andrew stood behind her menacingly, a pressuring force looming in the room.
But really, how was she supposed to do this? Sure she had experience with the arts and dancing. She had wanted to be a performer at some point in her life before deciding on her current course, keeping the arts as a hobby. That covered her bases in terms of the ballroom dancing part. But as for etiquette and all that jazz, Akko had no clue. She was just a normal girl, living a normal life, having met amazing people, and... the love of her life.
She groaned in remembrance, pulling out a slip of paper, an extra entrance voucher. āBring a plus oneā, Denise had said. Well... that wouldnāt be a problem, Akko supposed. Maybe... She could always ask Diana.
The thought of the girl set flurries of butterflies wild in her stomach, face warming up along with her heart. She fiddled with the band situated around her left ring finger. She was still getting used to it, the metal feeling awkward in that spot. Thatās just what she gets for never wearing it all these years. Kind of a nuisance, if she were being honest; but... at the same time... it was a reminder that...
[āSo youāre... my soulmate...ā
āLooks like it.ā
āDid you... know about it?ā She watched fluffy hair bounce along with the bobbing of a shy girlās head. āHow long...?ā
āI had a feeling right from when we met... then confirmed it after you first showed me your planetarium.ā
ā...thatās a few weeks back.ā
āYouāre just so slow.ā
āIām sorry.ā
āItās alright. It really is now.ā]
āAAAAHHHH!!ā Akko hollered, ridding herself of the embarrassed tension in her body. āHnnnggghhh...ā Holding in all her squeals, she flew onto her bed, hugging a pillow tight and rolling about. Maybe she should call Diana right now, if only to hear her voice. Oh, and she should just pop the question while sheās at it, the invitation.
A few rings, one, two, three fo-
[āHello?ā]
āDid you know I love your voice? It was the first thing I fell in love with, ever since you saved me from the clutches of death.ā She couldnāt hold back the adoration she felt for the Englishwoman any longer.
[āOh my god, Akko. Did you really just call me so you could be such a sap?ā] Ā Her giggle was always the best, Akko reveled.
āNo~, or kind of yes, but not entirely.ā
[āIs that so?ā] Diana teased through the line.
āDonāt believe me?ā
[āOf course I do! After all... itās my magic.ā]
āWhoās the sap now.ā
[āI learned only from the best.ā]
āAmanda?ā
[āYOU, you idiot!ā] Akko laughed at the reaction, squealing inwardly in delight. Dianaās laughter alongside hers died down, the phone going silent for a bit. And then, [āYouāre the best.ā].
Akko just couldnāt handle it.
āI love you.ā
[āI love you too, sweetheart.ā]
āI love you, I love you, I love you.ā
[āI love you more.ā]
āI love you! I love you! I love you!ā
[āI love you more than anything in this world.ā]
Akko was not crying.
āI love you... be my plus one?ā
[ā...ā]
[āAlways.ā]
//-//-//-//-//
āMy baby... so grown up now and looking all gorgeous.ā Mrs. Kagari wiped a tear from her eye, admiring her daughter in a russet-toned gown, sleeveless, with a low dip in the back, fitting, and at the same time, flowing off her frame and onto the floor. It was simple, yet elegant. It matched well with Akkoās hair; usual bangs side-swept, signature ponytail gone, her long brown hair slightly curled and hanging off on one shoulder, exposing the other. All this topped with a little make-up, and even Andrew commended this picture of Akko that could pass as part of high society.
āShall we?ā He held out an arm for her to take, door open with a car waiting right outside. Akkoās father sobbed loudly, holding onto his wife for dear life.
āM-Mama! MY BABY! MY BABY IS BEING TAKEN AWAY BY SOME RICH YOUNG BRAT WHO JUST LOOKS GOOD, AND IS A LITTLE SMART, AND OWNS A HOSPITAL.ā
āWell, donāt those sound like amazing specs.ā Akkoās mama laughed, consoling the poor man. āYou sound like a father sending his daughter off to meet her groom.ā
āI AM.ā
āBut Diana-chan is so cute, though?ā
āMan or woman, whoever takes my baby away from me and ends up hurting her... they will never see the light of the afterlife.ā
Diana felt a chill run up her spine as she waited in the car.
āOh, hush you. Youāre overreacting.ā
āAM I?!ā
āByebye, papa. Iāll be home soon. Love you~ Love you more, Mama!ā
āAh- bye, my darling daughter, my baby, my sun, light of my world, my angel!ā
āYou can stop embarrassing her now, darling.ā
//-//-//-//-//
āAkko, donāt be so stiff.ā Diana whispered into the girlās ear, a hand caressing the small of her back to ease away the nerves. āYouāll be fine. Just think of it as any old party.ā
āE-e-e-easy for you t-to say. You g-grew up with th-this.ā Akko retorted, a hand with some champagne shakily approaching her lips.
āReally, youāre too high-strung.ā The blonde sighed, pointing to Akkoās best friends. āLook at Lotte and Sucy, they look normal.ā
Akko glared at her best friends who seemed to be enjoying themselves without a worry in the world. Oh, golly, what a treat. Maybe she shouldnāt have offered their extra tickets to them so she wouldnāt feel as bitter.
āHey.ā A flick was sent to her forehead. āNo mean thoughts.ā
āI wasnāt-ā
āDi.A. NAAAA~ā Here came a wild Denise, flying through the air to hug an alarmed Diana, barely catching her. It would appear as thought they were good friends, and Denise, not knowing anything about the relationship between her two dear bosom buddies, had sent them each an invitation with the hopes of bringing a plus one to introduce to her (so she could tease them about it), all the while, being kept in the dark that their plus one just so happened to be each other.
Which also explained the extra tickets that had gone to Lotte and Sucy. Akko was afraid it would be rude to just hand them away, but Diana reassured her it would be just fine. They both knew how kind-hearted and open-minded Denise was anyway.
āM-miss Walsh... please let me breathe.ā
āDiana~ Itās Denise!ā
āD-Denise... please... my airways...ā
With greetings out of the way (Akko being squeezed to death as well, to be fair), the announcement were made, and the party commenced, music playing as the floor opened for the dances.
...
Akko swore she was a good dancer. Really! She was the ace of their studio. She could dance almost anything after learning it over the course of a few weeks at most, and so few days at the very least. So she couldnāt understand just how sheād suddenly acquired two left feet, constantly, and clumsily stepping on poor Dianaās feet.
One step. āSorry.ā
āItās alright.ā
Another miss. āSorry.ā
āItās alright.ā
āS-sorry!ā
ā...ā
āOh my gosh, I really am sorry!ā
āI-itās quite alright...ā
ā...ā
āWanna get some fresh air?ā
āPleasured.ā
//-//-//-//-//
The Walshās family gardens were certainly award winning, Akko admired. As someone with a hobby in that field, this was a dream come true, to see such stellar workmanship. With flowers oāer the earth, and stars up above, the moon reflecting ripples into a still, small lake just a few yards down, it was the picture of beauty.
Yet nothing could compare to Diana by her side. Akko admired the way the womanās gown clung to her curves in all the right places, how midnight blue reminded her of the skies they were under, and the dear stars in the heiress eyes sparkled ever brighter. How the earrings that dangled sparkling silver matched Akkoās own, only in gold, how her hair was fixed to the side as well, a portion of her bangs tucked neatly behind her ear, held back by a pin Akko had gotten her recently.
Akko was transfixed, as though she were under a witchās spell. A very gorgeous, kind-hearted, hardworking, and sincere witch. A woman she loved with every fiber of her being, with the entirety of her heart.
She watched the moonlight caress ivory skin, glistening under its kind rays. Akko wanted to do so as well. Touch it, and know she was real and not just a figment of her imagination.
āI love you.ā She murmured, reaching forward, arms wrapped around a slim waist, lips pressing against a bare shoulder. āI love you.ā
Diana hummed, hands resting over Akkoās latched on to her abdomen. āDance with me, Love.ā She beckoned, leading them to sway under the night sky, the crickets and the breeze playing them a song of romance solely for their rapture.
The moon as their only witness, they vowed silent words, moving along the area, spinning, swaying, dancing, laughing, smiling, crying.
Akko never felt as lucky as she did in this moment. She was beyond fortunate. This moment sheād never forget, a memory never to be destroyed all her life, reminding her that she was blessed.
Blessed, and still a little foolish.
āI still donāt get it, you know. Why ācabbageā?ā
Diana laughed into the tranquil night. Slapping Akkoās bare arm in fondness. āDid you really just ask that? Now of all times? With a romantic mood set up like this?ā She shook her head in disbelief. āYou are amazing, Kagari Atsuko. I love you to death, really I do... but are you seriously still hung over that?ā She inquired, spinning her fated partner about, bringing her back in close. āDoes it have to make sense? Isnāt it enough to know that youāre meant to be mine, and Iām forever yours?ā
Akko returned that tender smile, leaning up to place a kiss against Dianaās throat. āWell, yeah, I guess; but... like... doesnāt that defeat the ringsā purpose, then?ā
āDoes it matter?ā
ā...It doesnāt. Not anymore. Not when youāre by my side, because thatās all that matters.ā
āGreat answer.ā
āDiana?ā
āHmmm? What is it now?ā Diana asked, amused that the peaceful mood didnāt look like it would settle back down anytime soon.
āFor ruining the moment.... sorry.ā All Akkoās laughing refuted that statement. Diana knew they both didnāt regret it one bit. Not at all. So with a smile only meant for her world nestled in her arms, leaning down and closing the gap bit-by-bit, what else could Diana reply with except,
ā...Itās alright.ā
And they saw stars.
//-//-//-//-//
This... was an unexpected development.
ā...Wanna come over?ā
āIād love to.ā
Cold, soaked and dropped off by the Cavendishās service car, they made their way up the drive way, Akko fumbling for her house keys in the wee hours of the morning.
āSorry, I really didnāt expect it to rain when I invited you out.ā
āItās fine, it wasnāt something within our control at all. The night looked perfectly clear, too.ā
Flipping on the lights by the threshold, Akko guided Diana in, drenched shoes flying off, but immediately retrieved and set to the side to drip properly. Theyād have to clean and dry those tomorrow better, but for now, a bath of warmth was in order.
Akko had insisted Diana take one first, but ever the gentlewoman, Diana did not move an inch until she was absolutely certain Akko would be alright. Her strongest argument stood to be, āJust who was it that I had to take to the hospital upon our first encounter.ā, and Akko could only pout, begrudgingly accepting her defeat and warming herself a bath, but not without leaving Diana a towel and a temporary change of clothes so she wouldnāt get chills.
As Akko tagged Diana with a kiss to the lips, switching places after drawing the girl a fresh warm bath, she made her way to the kitchen, deciding to make them some vegetable soup to warm them up from the inside. Would Diana like that too?
Choosing and gathering her ingredients, she began prepping, chopping up everything as her water in the pot was brought to a boil.
It didnāt take her long at all to finish. By the time the food was ready, Diana was back downstairs, clad in one of Akkoās oversized shirts and pajama bottoms. It did strange things to Akkoās dear heart. On Dianaās part, just the sight of her future wife (she was a woman with a vision for tomorrow) preparing her a meal, fresh from a bath, in their own little world... How could she not fall deeper in love? So in love that she could just kiss her!
And she did just that.
Walking up to the shorter girl, Diana coaxed her into warm arms, a hand making its way into brunette strands, entangling them around her fingers, ring shining amidst them. This was bliss. This was everything to her.
This was everything to Akko. Everything sheād hoped for and wanted, and even more.
āI love you.ā
āI love you.ā
Soft. A little salty, maybe the soupās seasoning. Warm and gentle, yet pressured and emotional. Tenderly passionate, and passionately tender, their lips danced a song that theyād forever remember.
And as they sat down to eat, seated in front of each other, they motioned for cheers with their chopsticks, a leafy green clipped between one pair.
And thatās when Akko realized that it all made perfect sense.
The rings werenāt wrong, and the words would always be right.
āAh...
Cabbage.ā
~end.
A/N: Can you believe it? All that, just so I could say in the end, āCabbageā. Honestly, Akko is so slow. Somehow Iām not quite satisfied with this, and maybe I shouldāve gone with a different approach or piece, or simply edited my original plan to fit safely within the guidelines, but... Idk. Maybe Iām as much of a fool as Akko, that way. Was it worth the thousands of bothersome words to read? Haha. Feedback is appreciated, as always. Hope you enjoyed.
Itās an Update
Hello, Riddle here! I know Iāve been pretty quiet on Tumblr lately. Hereās an update on my situation:
I will definitely post more fanfic updates soon. Iāve picked at drafts, but havenāt posted anything lately. Here are the reasons why:
I got a new IRL job. Itās a good fit for me, but I have less free time than I used to, of course. Itās a job that involves writing lots of articles on a variety of topics, and I enjoy how every day is a little different
Most of my free time for the last year has gone towards my mod work at the Creature-Crossing ARPG, and to my personal CC writing. Iāve been working on new activities over there (my recent favorite being our seasonal familiar shows... I won first place in the summer show!) and I have a lot of plot plans that are coming together now. If you ever want to see my original characters and read my CC writing, you can find my character directory HERE and my Table of Contents HERE.
Once November 1st hits, I wonāt be preparing for the release of any more CC activities or events. All future activity or event releases will be overseen by the other mods, and Iāll simply be someone they can ask for extra help if needed. This is a big change for a mod who spent the last 12 months working on new releases, and will give me back some of the free time my IRL job will eat
The Creature-Crossing admin (my boss) greenlit my request to bring an assistant on the mod team who will specifically help me with a lot of my behind-the-scenes work, such as data entry and organization. Iāve never had another mod who specifically helps me with the back end duties before, so that will be awesome. I will need to spend some time training them, but once they are official, that will take some of my workload off and allow me more free time for this blog and personal writing time.
===
Fanfic updates you can expect to see soon:
- Reedfilter Rules
- Frayed Knots
- Origin of the Pixies
- Debut of Factor It In, my Kid Math-centric āWordGirlā fanfic (Subtitled āTales of a third-grade superhero in trainingā)... Yes I am still in love with this idiot boy, expect lots of doodle pages soon
- The 130 Prompts project is on a slow-burn writing schedule... Iāll write for it when I want to, but I mostly want to focus on Origin and Knots this year.
Further info below the cut. There is more info about non-Fairly OddParentsĀ āfics in here too (under ānon-FOP fanficsā), so if youāre looking forward to Mario World or āWordGirlāĀ āfics from me, give this a click so you know whatās coming!
So, what does this update mean for your fanfics?
Theyāll be active again soon! Iāve been picking at them behind the scenes, trying to build up a buffer. In an ideal world, I would love to release a new chapter for SOMETHING every Friday. I doubt this will be possible, but itās something I would love to work towards in the future. Realistically, you can probably expect some kind of fanfic update once every two Fridays (two updates per month).
There might be some Fridays where posting an update is not possible. Instead, Iāll make a post about what progress I made instead. In the past, I often overworked myself to get a chapter out in time for my old deadline. I will not be doing that anymore, but will instead hold myself to a goal ofĀ āMake progress on something every week.ā
In the best ideal world, I would love to post one FOP fanfic update per week and one non-FOP fanfic update per week. This is not likely to happen for a long, long time, but that would be the dream.
-
Here are the things I most likely worked on if there is no fanfic update:
- A fanfic chapter draft that needs more time
- A sideblog profile
- A Toyhouse profile for personal characters
- IRL work or mod work may have kept me busy this week
- Creature-Crossing writing... I will try to prioritize my fanfics more, but my CC writing is still important to me and I will be working on it in a lot of my free time too. At the moment, I have a hard deadline of December 14th that I need to meet if I want to release huge plot drama on the day that it happens in canon. Iāve been building up to this for a long time, so Iām really excited about that.
I currently have summer or autumn 2022 planned as the āfinaleā for the majority of my plot to explode. I will be hosting a member-run event in Creature-Crossing that will last for two months, so a lot of my time from January until the eventās release will be spent doing event prep. Once the event ends, my story content will mostly be a āreturn to slice of life.ā Stories will be more casual one-offs as characters grow, live their lives, and start their own families. Hitting seasonal deadlines for plot will no longer be so important. Iāll be giving Creature-Crossing work less attention after that, and much more attention to my fanfics.
- I may not have a fanfic chapter out each week, but I WILLĀ post a note every Friday to let you know what I have been doing with my time. Youāll see me around. Feel free to send Asks and talk!
===
What non-FOP fanfics would you like to work on?
For literal years, Iāve been claiming I want to post Mario World fanfics. This is still something I want to do. I tag Mario World posts as āmushrooms and more.ā Iāve already done a lot of worldbuilding, I have thousands of words of content written for this fandom... I just havenāt posted any of it. I hope to do this soon.
-Ā āWordGirlā fanfics are prioritized over Mario World fanfics. After I finish my firstĀ āWordGirlā multi-chapter, I will probably be ready to post my Mario WorldĀ āfics. I may possibly post some Mario World one-shots in between other fanfic updates. Might take another year or more before I touch Mario stuff unless thereās high interest in seeing it sooner?
I also really want to write someĀ WordGirlĀ āfics and get more involved with the fandom community. Iāve been building headcanons and lore for this show ever since I was a kid, and I have multipleĀ āfics for this fandom that I want to write.
- āAlgoRhythmā is a āfic I have already posted on FFN and AO3, about WordGirl introducing Kid Math to the villains in town
- 28 Cities is aĀ āfic I started about Rhyme and Reason before they arrived in Fair City. I put it on hiatus since it didnāt seem like anyone was interested, but Iām willing to post more for it if there is interest in it now that years have passed and Iāve gotten more followers who like WordGirl. I have a lot of worldbuilding and plot I never shared for it
- Factor It In is a āfic Iāve been working for a while that parallels the official show from the moment Kid Math arrives in town. It focuses on Rexās struggle to adjust to this world as a child coming into his superpowers for the first time (Yāknow, the wholeĀ āsuperheroes donāt have powers when theyāre on their home planetsā thing), his struggle to adapt to the social world of a non-logical planet, and Beckyās struggle to help him become accustomed to Earth and learn to share it with her as well. If the episode āKid Mathā was a full-length novel about Rexās arrival and character development, thatās what this story is. This is the highest priority of all my non-FOPĀ āfics... Iāve had a cover image made for 6 months and even though I tried setting it aside, Iāve always been superĀ inspired to write for it. If I felt like it would be a good idea to commit to weekly updates alongside my FOP updates, I would, haha.
- I have two one-shot WIPs calledĀ āSquishy Feelingsā andĀ āA Little Ambiguityā, one of them focusing on Becky and Rex talking about the events ofĀ āRhyme and Reasonā and what it means for Rexās secret identity, and the latter being a futureĀ āfic showing WordGirl and Kid Math dealing with life 10 to 15 years down the road. Iāll probably post the latter, not sure yet on the former.
- If desired, I may make a WordGirl specific sideblogĀ where I post lore, answer Asks, post character profiles [smaller than my FOP sideblog ones], and mention fanfic updates. If you would be interested in this, feel free to send me an Ask requesting I do this. If thereās not interest, Iāll just keep my WordGirl stuff on the main blog.
- Iād like to get more involved in the WordGirl community, so Iāll probably post more content and reblog more art and headcanons
I also have a handful of miscellaneous ideas I might follow through with. Iād like to write at least one āTUFF Puppyā fanfic so I can say I did. In a perfect world I would like to finish the two āDanny Phantomā and āBunsen Is a Beastā fanfics I started because... I just kind of want to dip my toe in each of the Hartman shows once since I already went through all the effort of worldbuilding for them to make them canon in a single Hartman show universe. āChalkZoneā is another show I adore and might touch someday (You may recall I have a full outline planned for an FOP/ChalkZone crossover āfic calledĀ āDust to Dustā).
Will I write all of these things? Maybe not. I have no idea if I want to spend the next 10+ years writing fanfics, or if Iāll simply be done with all misc. fanfics immediately once I decide to be done with my main āfics. I definitely intend to write for a few more years and finish my main āfics, but I might not go through with some less popular sideĀ āfics if life is getting busy for me.
===
What is the posting schedule for FOPĀ āfics?
Reedfilter Rules, Frayed Knots, Origin of the Pixies, the 130 Prompts project, and āCome What Mayā are all high priority FOP writings. I will swap between them depending on my mood that week.
Here are some otherĀ āfics I want to work on.
- If you like, you can send me Asks requesting I work on a specific story above the rest. I will try to prioritize whichever stories interest you guys most.
Snips and SnailsĀ is aĀ āfic I started and posted the first chapter for years ago. Iām not sure when I will get back to it, as I ran into some writerās block. Itās still on tentativeĀ hiatus for now..... Possibly forever, though I hope it isnāt forever since itās only supposed to be, like, five more chapters.
Pink and Gray is on official hiatus. I actually have a lot written for it, but I know itās a little weird to put so much time and energy into Gary and Betty content when... well, letās be honest: theyāre my niche favorites and most of you probably donāt care. So, I am lifting my usual āno spoilersā policy from my Ask Box. If you would like to ask about my Gary and Betty backstory headcanons, feel free. I will tag my replies as āridwriting spoilersā for anyone who wants to blacklist the tag, and spoilers will be hidden under a Read More line.Ā
Iād like to return to this story someday because there are tons of things I like about it (ranging from Bettyās secret tattoos to Garyās plot drama with his mom to the background drama between Talon and Anti-Cosmo, but I always feel immense pressure to make it extra cool to make up for the fact these are weird side characters, so... itās officially at the bottom of the priority pile. Once Talon shows up in Frayed Knots and readers understand who he is and why he exists, Iāll consider coming back to it.
Identity Theft is a story about Foop and his time in the alternate dimension he was flung into following the episode āPlaydate of Doom.ā To put it short, Foop was abused by alternate versions of his parents in this dimension and he witnessed some pretty intense stuff, including the death of the alt version of himself who existed in that reality. The trauma he experienced resulted in his alternate personality, Hiccup. Foop himself has very few memories of what happened, as Hiccup has all of those memories.Ā This story is canon in my works, and it is regularly referred to during the 130 Prompts as part of Foopās backstory. Itās my highest priority side story to work on.
Along the Cherry Lane is a 20-chapter work focusing on the lives of the main human cast from age 11 to age 30, with one chapter showing a snippet of their lives each year. You see Timmy raising Tommy and Tammy in thisĀ āfic, and it ends with them receiving godparents.Ā Since the 130 Prompts donāt give humans much attention, this āfic does. Youāll probably see it debut two years from now, closer to when the 130 Prompts is ready to talk more about humans.
If this becomes a popularĀ āfic of mine, Iāll probably write a sequel or continue it past Chapter 30 and write about Tammy and Tommy living with fairies, but I wonāt if thereās no interest in that.
Little Imperfections is a Pixie AUĀ āfic of mine about what life would be like in a universe where the Fairies are even more like insects than I play them as during my main works (where I already play them as semi-similar to insects). In this world, the Head Pixie is a figurehead whose duty is to reproduce for the sake of the colony and do nothing else, and heās bored out of his mind until he befriends Sanderson, who introduces him to music. Itās extremely self-indulgent and silly because I like Pixies.
Francis is a multi-chapterĀ āfic about bully Francisās life getting yet another fairy godparent in a long string of memory wipes and godparents. It takes place during the canon series, and when you see an āorange fairyā mentioned in some of my writings, itās usually referring to this fairy. His name is Rover and I occasionally post art of him. I feel like I canāt truly call myself an FOP fanfic writer until I actually write about a godkid and their godparents, haha...
Hawthorn Haven is a sideĀ āfic that will be posted towards the end of the 130 Prompts, as it veers off from the prompts in its own self-contained multi-chapter story. It will be approximately the length ofĀ āBaby, Youāre a Rich Man.ā
Acacia Arcadia is a far-past āfic detailing the fall of the ancient fae, the imprisonment of the nature spirits, the rise and fall of the chimera nation, the fall of the Martian genies, and the early days of the cloudlands. This is close to the bottom of the priority pile... Itās something I spend time on for personal reference to ensureĀ accuracy in my otherĀ āfics, but itās probably not what you guys came here to read.
AA has a bunch of characters in it that you might vaguely recognize, such as Ezekiel Whimsifinado, Evadne, Ione, Two Feathers, Rho, and Sablewood (If youāre astute, you might recall cloudland legends and landmarks in modern day that refer back to these characters). There are also a lot of characters who were reincarnated as Anti-Fairies, in accordance to traditional Anti-Fairy beliefs; Foop for example exists as a main character in one of his past lives, and youāll see a hint dropped about each of his lives in the first chapter ofĀ Identity Theft. My tentative plan is to use Foopās past lives as my central characters, following the events of each part of the timeline until he gets killed and reincarnates at a later point of the timeline.
I also keep some one-shots in a file I callĀ Mixed NutsĀ and I may possibly post them someday (theyāre mostly just one-shots of main cast characters I do to get a feel for their personalities, I have some Wanda and Cupid in here). @zachbrightside and I are also working on a collabĀ āfic calledĀ Like a House On FireĀ that shows more of Timmy and Chloeās lives during Season 10 (especially around the time ofĀ āWhich Is Wish?ā) No news on a release date for that yet.
-
As Iāve said before, once all my other FOP works are complete, I will write Devilās Backbone, which is my far-future āfic and the finale of my FOP writing. I do not plan to write any more FOP content after that story is finished, as I expect to have all other FOP projects done by then.
- Devilās Backbone is a finale 'fic, so all worldbuilding from all stories is fair game to blend together, and itās highly recommended you read everything else first. This story has been outlined since 2016, and it might not be published for another 10 years... Who knows! But itās something I always work towards as a concrete endgame goal.
- If something serious comes up in my life and I officially decide I donāt want to write this story, I will post the outline for it. The link to this draft is included with all the other Google Docs links I have in a far-future queued post unveiling my WIPs in case I unexpectedly die and you still want to know how my stories would have gone, so youāll get access to this story eventually even if I die young. Yes, share access is turned on for them all and I do take extra careful measures to be sure that post doesnāt get posted early skldfj
===
What is the plan for the main blog?
Every Friday, I will post either a fanfic chapter or a progress update. You can blacklist the tagĀ āridlifeā if you do not want to see the progress updates on your dashboard. Fanfic updates will not have theĀ āridlifeā tag, so you will not be blocking them.
During the rest of the week, I might post doodles, reblogs, or general comments. Basically... youāll see the blog become active again. Feel free to send in Asks about my worldbuilding and thoughts on fanfic characters.
@fountainpenguin is my personal blog, so you will see non-fandom things on here sometimes
@riddledeep is my FOP-exclusive sideblog. It contains all my lore notes and goes into a ton of depth, more than my fanfics give in one breath
===
What does this mean for the Riddledeep sideblog?
I really want to go back and edit those character profiles that were posted early by mistake. The reason they were queued is because if I turned them into drafts, they would have been buried all the way at the beginning of my draft collection, and I have many, many drafts saved. There are no page numbers to navigate quickly through the draft collection, so I would have to click through each page one by one if I ever wanted to look at them. I hated doing this, which is why I kept my posts queued.
I was regularly updating the queue deadlines, trying to keep things in the order I wanted to post them in, but Tumblr made a change to the way drafts are dated and it kept throwing off my system. My inability to remember when my queued things would post combined with my busy schedule led to some profiles being posted early and incomplete. I want to fix these.
Over a year ago, my good friend Vulpix150 helped me finalize my designs for the Aos SĆ and Daoine Sith. Iāve been sitting on that art in secret for a while, and at some point I plan to post it on the sideblog and talk more about that lore.
Updating fanfics is my higher priority (and it was the priority my followers voted for when I asked you to send votes to my Ask Box a while back). So, I will usually spend my free time working on fanfics unless I need a break from them and want to work on sideblog profiles instead. Thank you for your patience!
===
TL;DR
Iām posting fanfics again soon. Iām going to take a more relaxed approach to posting them. Iām going to post more of what I want to post and what I feel motivated to post, not always a mainĀ āfic update. If Iām notĀ āfeeling itā when working on a draft, then Iāll set it aside for a while unless I know my followers and readers have high interest in the next chapter of that story. I always write for me first, but if I know there are other people who care a lot about a story, then of course I want to write it for you too!
Iām going to embrace my decade-long love for WordGirl and post moreĀ āfics and art or this fandom. Iāve always been a little shy about doing this, but Iām ready to make it an official fandom on my main blog (unless there are lots of requests for WordGirl things to be contained in their own sideblog). I will be posting the first chapter for a āfic called Factor It In very soon. Love my easily frustrated alien kiddos having a long day.
I am working on Creature-Crossing stuff too, and will be especially busy in November and December. Updates will be slow for a few months, but I hope to find my groove and a good pace soon.
Each Friday, I will post either a fanfic update or a mention of what I am working on. I will be checking in on Tumblr regularly. Feel free to talk! I much prefer you send messages to my Ask Box, not my private messenger, please <3
===
Is there a specific story of mine you like and want more updates for?
Asks and reviews help me know whichĀ āfics people are enjoying. I plan to keep writingĀ āfics no matter what, but I definitely give more time to the āfics that get more attention (and I have been spending so much time writing for Creature-Crossing because thatās where the attention was coming from)
Itās easy to stay motivated and get the next part of a story out soon if I know that people like it. Itās always harder if you feel like people are silently judging you and ignoring your posts. So, let me know what youāre interested in. And if you only leave Likes or Favorites instead of asks and reviews, thatās okay too! Thank you for interacting anyway and enjoying my work.
Thanks for reading!
& To All a Goodnight.
Dean Winchester x Reader
Request:Ā For requests could you do a dean x reader where they spend Christmas together and it's a lot of fluff?š³š³
Requested by: Anonymous
Holidays were never really celebrated at the bunker.
If you were being honest, most of the time you werenāt even sure what day it was, let alone preparing for festivities regarding some day that was probably tied to some horrible historical event.
But, if you were being more honest, you really did love Christmas.
It wasnāt so much the religious connotations- which had grown considerably more complicated when you considered your relationship with angels- but more so the idea of holiday cheer, and an unexplainable magic in the air. As a kid, you had loved Christmas. You celebrated from the beginning of November, right up until the day itself, baking cookies, watching cheesy holiday movies, and decorating every square inch of the house.
After losing your parents, and the subsequent descent into the life of a hunter, you hadnāt really been able to celebrate. It wasnāt that you didnāt want to, though it was considerably a difficult time for the first couple years, but you hadnāt had a chance. You were constantly on the go. The closest thing to a home you had was the warm embrace of Dean Winchester and the backseat of the Impala, which Sam had argued he was too big for. (He was, but you liked sitting shotgun.)
With the bunker though, you had an opportunity to celebrate like you hadnāt in years.Ā
And you did.
Sam and Dean had left for the week. Well, five days maximum, if Dean were to be trusted, but you knew him well enough to know that meant seven days minimum. You had cracked a couple of ribs on the last hunt, and with Castiel MIA, you were stuck healing the old-fashioned way.
Never one to be cooped up for an excessive amount of time, you had gone all out with the decorations. Every room had an overwhelming amount of Christmas cheer, save Dean and Samās room.
And the tree!
Oh my goodness, the tree!
You had gone out and got a fresh tree, straight from a Christmas tree farm. Red and gold adorned the green needles, creating a homey atmosphere among the living room typically used to unwind after rough cases. You decided on a star to put atop the tree, as opposed to an angel. (It was bad enough you had them popping up in real time, you didnāt want them to ruin the Christmas cheer.)
You hadnāt stopped there, either. You bought and wrapped both Sam and Dean enough gifts to fill out the empty base of the tree. Dean had confided in you once that he couldnāt even remember what a normal Christmas was like, so you were determined to give the boys the best one yet.
And, when four whole days had passed of decorating, you moved onto baking. Chocolates, cookies, pies- you name it. You had gone slightly overboard, but the boys still werenāt back yet, and Christmas was slowly creeping closer.
Would they be back in time?
You certainly hoped so. They hadnāt given you an update in nearly a full day, but you had a 48 hour rule- 48 hours before any of you unleashed hell upon whatever case the one who hadnāt contacted was working on.
Though, after putting away all of the goodies, youād snuggled up on the couch and put on a cheesy, and wholly predictable, Christmas romantic comedy while waiting for your boys. You were worried, and it took three and a half movies before you were able to fall asleep, but eventually, to the gentle lull of Christmas music, your eyes slipped shut on Christmas Eve.
Sam and Dean were practically dragging themselves into the bunker by the time they made it home. It was a long haul back, and they hadnāt even managed to check in with you.
Dean had been adamant about making it back before Christmas. He had been holding onto a special gift for you for months, and maybe it was a little cheesy, but he couldnāt wait to see your face when you opened it.
āWow.ā
Sam had been the first to step back into the bunker, and Dean couldnāt see over his giraffe of a younger brother, so he was left to wonder whatĀ āwowā meant. He wasnāt left waiting for long though, because as soon as he got through the door, he saw the decorations all placed precariously throughout the room, making the bunker feel a little more like a home.
āSo much for rest,ā Dean muttered, already preparing his worried, yet heartfelt speech about why injuries were not to be taken lightly.
āThatās exactly what I need,ā Sam hid a yawn behind his hand.Ā āIām heading to bed, Iāll see you both in the morning.ā
Dean waved him off, following the string of multi-colored lights to the living room. You had a habit of waiting on the couch for him when he was gone, like you thought you could stay awake a few extra hours just in case he made it home early. It brought a smile to his face.
As expected, you were stretched out of the couch, clothed in an old, oversized t-shirt of his. His blanket was wrapped snugly around your body, and the corner of your lips were pulled up like you were having a good dream.
Unable to help himself, he slipped his phone from his pocket and snapped a quick photo of you. He had an album in his camera roll, labeled with just a heart, that consisted solely of the photos that made him fall a little more in love with you.
It was created the day after he met you, and there were already several hundred photos in it.
ā(Y/N),ā Dean called softly, careful rousing you. As a hunter, you were sometimes a little too aggressive if you were suddenly woken up.
āDean,ā you whispered back, your eyes still shut, but the beginnings of consciousness seeping in.
āHey, sweetheart,ā he replied, dropping down onto his knees to get closer to you.
By the time you opened your eyes, he was right there, running his thumb along your cheek.
āHowād the hunt go?ā You inquired, leaning into his touch.
His lips quirked up.
āA few bruises, Sammyās hair got a little messed up, nothing serious.ā
You breathed a laugh, reaching up to cradle his head with your hands. He kissed your wrist as you did so.
āLooks like Santa got here early,ā Dean commented after a moment, nodding his head in the direction of the tree.
āGuess so,ā you stated, failing to keep the smile off your lips.Ā āHope youāve been good this year.ā
His brows raised, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
āDarling,ā he drawled,Ā āYou and I both know I havenāt.ā
You giggled at his silly joke, moving to sit up so you could embrace him a little better. He took the sudden vacancy as an opportunity to slip into the spot beside you. His arms wrapped more firmly around your waist, tugging you onto his lap.
āI missed you,ā you hummed, nuzzling into the crook of his neck.
āOf course you did,ā he teased, pressing his lips to your cheek. He stayed there for a moment, letting the warmth of your skin seep into the cold whispers the days without you had brought.
āIāve got a present for you,ā he said suddenly, shifting a bit to pull the gift from his pocket.
āI think youāre supposed to open gifts on Christmas,ā you reminded him, listening to the strong beat of his heart against your head.
āI mean, itās passed midnight,ā he argued, holding a small box out in the palm of his hand.
It was made of wood, and had a symbol you didnāt quite understand carved into the smooth mahogany, but you took it with a smile nonetheless.
āYou didnāt have to get me a gift,ā you stated. You had meant for this Christmas to be all about him and Sam.
āOpen it,ā he urged, ignoring your objection without hesitation.
You rolled your eyes good-naturedly, popping the box open with a soft click.
Ā It was a necklace. The chain and pendant were both a shiny silver, though the pendant was shaped like a compass. You gasped, reaching out to run a finger along the craftsmanship.
āItās beautiful,ā you told him.Ā āWhy the compass?ā
Even in the dim light provided by the Christmas decorations, you could see the red on his cheeks.
āSo youāll always find your way home to me.ā
It was very much an un-Dean thing to say. He had, in recent months, been exceedingly comfortable with you, and had allowed himself to say some of what he had hidden under his gruff, macho exterior.
It was endearing.
He clicked his tongue against his teeth.
āItās made from the knife you stabbed me with.ā
While that sentence would sound totally bonkers from anyone else, and honestly make you question whether you should be in jail, the story wasnāt quite as cut and dry as Dean made it seem.
You and Sam had to perform a ritual to force the creature possessing Dean out of his body. In order to do so, youād had to get some amount of blood. However, the creature had made it nearly impossible, and in the end youād sent the blade through his hand.
Cas had been there to heal him up, but Dean hadnāt let you live that one down ever since. It had been used in one too many guilt trips.
āI was-ā
āSaving my life, I know, I know,ā he interrupted with a laugh.
You lightly pushed against his shoulder.
āYouāre a jerk,ā you claimed, admiring the gift. It was really pretty, and the details were immaculate.
āBut you love me,ā he sing-songed.
āI do,ā you agreed, leaning up to kiss his jaw. His eyes slipped shut as you did so.Ā āSomehow.ā
āFunny,ā he retorted dryly.Ā āNow letās get you to bed, since you obviously didnāt rest while we were gone.ā
Yeah, you were definitely expecting some sort of a lecture on your inability to rest, despite being injured. At least heād let you cuddle some before launching into it.
Iām Still Here
Many of you may have been asking yourself where did Silver go? Is anyone still working on QONQR?Ā I admit Iāve been very quiet the past year and from the outside, it looks like not much is going on.
Ā Before I give my QONQR update I want to share a major accomplishment for me. Iām a little less of a hoarder than I was a month ago. As the 11th year anniversary approached, I decided I had too much old QONQR merchandise I needed to get in the hands of my players. However, I hate shipping. I should be the spokesperson for one of those shipping providers that make shipping easy because I hate doing it so much. Many of you know that the player Rayndel has an Etsy store where she sells QONQR merchandise with my permission. I sent her a 65lb (30kg) box of QONQR stuff. Coffee cups, T-shirts, dog tags and stickers. She is liquidating all of it for me. You can find it all right here.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/DragonHoardCrafts?section_id=19648949
Ā 2020 and 2021 have been challenging for most people, and Iām no exception.Ā Both our kids are off to college. We are getting older and so are our extended families. Medical issues become more frequent for us and them. The stress of the pandemic doesnāt help. There are days when I can sit at my computer all day, and never write a line of code. Things are hard, they impact our ability to work as hard as we once did.
Ā A little over two weeks ago, QONQR hit its 11th birthday. The milestone passed quietly. I always spend time reflecting on how QONQR has changed my life and the stories youāve shared about how it has changed yours. Weāve built something great together. Together we keep it going.
Ā Despite outward appearances. Things are happening at QONQR. I am working, albeit at an admittedly slow pace. Iāve let go of the stress of pushing QONQR as fast as I can, and instead Iām working on QONQR at a pace that is comfortable. It is important to me and my family that I end my day without being drained of all my energy by the awful decisions and quality that Apple and Google hand me every day.
Ā The next release of QONQR will include the following features. Many of these are mostly done, so Iām happy to share them, with the caveat that I have no idea when these will actually hit the store. Tons of testing is still needed.
Ā New Sync Lock Rules
Ā Sync lock will now last much longer, perhaps a week or even a month before it automatically expires. Along with that Sync Lock Protection will also last longer. The more times you gain sync lock protection, the longer it will last. We want to protect legitimate family members from daily locks, but also want to avoid situations where multi-scoper can get infrequent help to unlock an army of devices and accounts. In addition to longer locks, Sync lock may also hurt resource collection with your bases depending on how play testing goes.
Ā As with everything pertaining to multi-scoping, it is a blurry line between stopping those who play unfair, and those that are punished for inviting family and friends to play.
Ā Notifications
I have wanted push notifications for most of the past 10 years. In fact, we were very close to having them implemented about 5-7 years ago, but Google changed their push notification system. We used a unified messaging system created by Microsoft to push to both Google and Apple simultaneously. There were incompatibilities between the new and the old Google system for a long time. We gave up on trying to finish that implementation back then, waiting for Google and Microsoft to get their stuff fixed, and it was years before it became a priority again.
Ā I spent most of the past 3-4 months working on notification. This area is quite possibly one of the worst technical implementations Iāve had to work with in all my time working in software. For example, if you kill an iPhone application, you also remove the ability to get push notifications until the next time you start the app. It appears to be almost random when Android will decide to beep your phone when receiving a notification, and when it will be silently added to the notification center. For both Apple and Google, the documentation is frustratingly inaccurate or out of date. There are multiple different ways a notification can be processed depending on whether the application was terminated by the user, suspended by the operating system, in the background or in the foreground. Was the notification scheduled locally or sent from a remote server?Ā Honestly, as a developer, it would be difficult to purposely design a worse system.
Ā The good news is that I believe I have it working as good as it can possibly work. In the next release you will be able to enable or disable notifications as a whole, or selectively choose which notification you want to receive. Notifications will include: Atlantis, New Wire messages, Mentions in Chat and Forums, Bots and Bases Full.
Ā A Major Overhaul to the Scope
The changes to Sync Lock mandated that overheat have additional logic to control bots and energy regeneration. More significantly, if we want to have a notification that your scope is full, so I needed to know exactly when the scope would be full.Ā Currently your regeneration rate is based on the number of launches in the past hour. Launching a few seconds before or after an old launch rolls off that 1 hour mark can mess up the prediction of when you will be full again. To make that prediction accurately, without checking every minute to see, āAre my bots full nowā, we changed the formula for when bots will be full, and scheduled a notification based on that time.
Ā The new regeneration is very similar to the old, but we predict you may get 1 or 2 more launches per hour. Iām hedging the formula towards more not fewer launches to make sure this is seen as a positive change.
Ā As long as we are messing with the scope, letās talk about the Bot Regen Accelerator.Ā Hard core players have pointed out that players who launch on a timer, always hitting the āoptimalā launch interval, donāt gain any advantage when purchasing this $0.99 upgrade. In the new release this upgrade will reduce your overheat level by 1 level and you will never be in maximum overheat due to deploying bots. The impact of the upgrade will be noticeable by everyone with this change. The name of this upgrade will probably change to āScope Coolantā or āHeat Diffuserā. Send me your name ideas.
Ā Ā Subscriptions, Ads and Elite Players
This is a change that probably wonāt be in the next release, but it is something Iām thinking about before the end of the year. Apple has had a bug in their subscription logic for years. If you purchase a subscription on an iPhone, then get a new iPhone, you need to cancel the subscription in the App Store, then renew from your new phone. Apple keeps charging you, but the new device canāt see the subscription, so QONQR doesnāt know you are a subscriber. Why wouldnāt Apple fix this? Well Apple only takes half the percentage of a subscription after the first year. By making you start a new subscription, they can double their cut of the money you pay QONQR for the subscription. Another problem with subscriptions is that they result in many support requests because they honestly arenāt 100% reliable in either Apple or Googleās implementation.
Ā Many people know that earlier in the year, Apple introduced a change to advertising that blocks tracking. This is great in theory, and I get it as a consumer that I donāt like to be tracked, but this tracker blocking also blocks my ability to make any revenue on advertising. Why would I continue to give away free advertising?
Ā Elite players are those that have spent over $100 in QONQR over the life of their gaming experience. Over the years the benefits of being āEliteā have dwindled. Features have changed, and incentives have ended. Iād like to invest more time and energy to build features for players that continue to support QONQR but I think it makes more sense to lower the bar and make the benefits for āactiveā spenders.
Ā With these three things in mind, there is a chance that QONQR will move to a monthly āpassā option rather than a subscription. There seems to be a trend with games, where players buy a monthly pass that offers benefits, rather than using subscriptions. Subscriptions are buggy and in the case of Apple, a shady business practice.
Ā The same benefits available to subscribers would remain under the āpassā, but you would have to explicitly purchase the pass each month.Ā Secondary missions may move to the āpassā model with non-pass players getting only a handful of secondary missions per month. Ads would be completely removed from the app in this scenario since they no longer generate much revenue.
Ā Ā Whatās in the Plans for 2022?
Ā If you have read my blog over the years, you know that Apple and Google make it harder and harder to stop cheating (primarily multi-scoping).Ā It is being reported that Windows 11 will have the ability to run Android apps. I donāt know yet how that will impact QONQR, but Iām guessing it wonāt be good. At best it will have no impact because Iāll be able to stop QONQR from running on Windows, at worst it could be a nightmare.
Ā March 2022 will mark the 10 year anniversary QONQR hit the Apple App Store. I can say with a high level of confidence that QONQR is now the longest running location-based, multi-platform, mobile game.
Ā Personally, I think 2022 needs to be a transformational year for QONQR. Iām not sure we can survive if the game doesnāt change. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have never cared about supporting mobile developers. Outrageous fees and abusive rules (recently acknowledged by the US Congress) have been part of the ecosystem from the start. There are dozens of apps that you can download from the official Google Play store that make it a simple tap to attempt to hack and manipulate an Android app, so players can do something the developer is attempting to prohibit. Once again Microsoft broke the tools I use to help secure the app from hackers, causing weeks of work to find a solution that would maintain the same level of security.Ā Apple and Google both purposely hide information from developers that would help them ensure real people are using their apps instead of bots. They do this under the faƧade of privacy, but ignore simple solutions that could maintain privacy, while helping developers ensure the integrity of how their apps are used.
Ā Iāve said for years, the only way to stop hackers and cheaters in QONQR is to make it irrelevant. That requires a major shift in gameplay. Together, you the players and me the developer, we need to decide if we want QONQR to have such a major shift. I donāt know what that shift would look like, but 2022 might be the year we figure it out.
Ā 2020 was a year of making sure QONQR can survive. Through tons of work that year, massive software rewrites and updates, I was able to cut the cost of hosting QONQR. Today the cost of hosting QONQR all year, matches what we spent in three months during 2019. So far 2021 has been a year of slow work toward significant improvements to the game, but without major strategic impact to your daily playing. Iāve taken my time to avoid burn out. Iām enjoying the pace of my current work week. It has been good for my family and me.
Ā Iām not sure what 2022 will look like for QONQR yet, but Iām excited to try something new. Maybe weāll break things, maybe we will create something ten times better than what we have had for the last decade. Time will tell. Weāll figure it out together.
Ā Thanks for keeping the lights on.
Planning #20 - Into Autumn - and beyond?
Wow, I reached number 20. Didnāt expect that to happen back in 2017, but here we are :D
With this post I wanted to highlight the fact that by now Iām shifting into developing the five main projects first and foremost. Until now Iāve frequently derailed with various one-shot stories in various fandoms, but for a while I want to focus on my on-going works since some of them have been out for a while and I feel like I can finally keep up the pace with them.
Not to say that that plans don't have any chance to change, of course. New ideas may come up every now and then still and I might take a detour to develop them into short stories, and in terms of fandoms that's very likely with respect to Amphibia, which is my biggest interest right now. Besides this, though, the plan is still to try and focus on TotQoM and the 4 multi-chapter fics from now on.
So, here are the five projects I mentioned and with expanded notes concerning their status (wall of text warning!).
The Butterfly Bane (SVTFOE): this is no doubt my main project, and the one multi-chapter I can consistently write for. The writerās block hiccup I encountered while writing chapter 4 has yet to show up again,Ā and while certain chapters will surely be more challenging, it is by far the story Iām having the most fun writing. Weāre still a long way from an end but I think I can keep a steady pace for this one more than I do for everything else. I will not make predictions on when Iāll finish it though, those are always bad omens lol
The Powerpuff Legacy (PPG): no changes to be shared on this one. This remains a side project with no schedule whatsoever, with chapters coming every now and then and at low priority compared to other stories. While writerās block should no more be a problem, this will still come up with updates more slowly compared to Bane, Woes and the Tales.
Time Woes with a Pinch of Frogs (AMPHIBIAxAHIT): my most recent attempt at making things even more complex for myself in terms of writing time management!
Jokes aside, I want to comment on this one a little. This story is structured in such a way that most chapters will act as self-contained sub-stories. This hopefully should achieve my quest to make the story enjoyable even with the likely long waits that are to come between updates. There are a few exceptions to this rule of sorts that are planned, that is, chapters that do connect to each other directly, and the first one is actually the first three chapters, since they act as an introduction of sort to the crossover. Thus, for now, I have Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 that I want to write down and post ASAP to give a proper beginning to the overall story, most likely coming out after the next work in Tales. After that, weāll shift into more spaced out updates.
Tales of the Queens of Mewni (SVTFOE one-shots): the probability of the next update from me being a one-shot of this series is 90%. I actually started writing it very recently and I would like to keep going since I basically am writing an āāāarcāāā of sorts for the character of Crescenta here that Iād like to complete, and itās been a while since the latest entry.
As mentioned in previous status updates, this story is going to focus on Crescenta and Dirhhennia, plus a couple of other major characters playing a role. I can also share a possible working title as a small tease:Ā āMendedā.
Pacifica over Yonder (GFxWOY): this story remains my biggest problem right now. I have actually rewatched Gravity Falls this Summer (a tradition at this point :D) and now I want to do the same for Wander, however, free time has diminished since then and I donāt know when Iāll be able to do so. A rewatch is extremely important as this story is basically set within the Wander over Yonder universe, so I canāt really try to get back into a story I basically havenāt touched since 2018Ā without a refresher by rewatching the show. Plus, I will need to revise the outline as well, since there are a couple of issues Iād like to address.
TL;DR: remember that time I said I plan to start updating again before the end of the year? Iām no more as confident I can manage that, so keep that in mind.
As a final note: I am going to enter a stage of my life where I might have to put hobbies aside for a few months to get those pesky life-goals done. My plan is still to try and write every now and then and not abandon fanfic writing outright, and since Iāve surprised myself with how much output I was able to produce this summer compared to previous years, I do think itās doable. I just am not sure if I can pull it off, so if youāre interested, up until sometime next year (Spring-Summer, depends on factors I wontā share here), I might just go offline for a few weeks if not months at any given time. Just so itās here in case anyone decides they are curious enough to check the blog, I guess.
Rules for my blog
This is a long post but it is a post for detailed rules
š§ Updated age interaction: I wish for minors to NOT interact with my blog or at least any NSFW content that I will post as I have a lot of it planned. I may make exceptions for interactions when it comes to commissions, but I will be much stricter about selling my products to minors.
š§My multi chapter fics will most probably have a smut chapter in them (not always). I will try my hardest to make it a skipable chapter so readers won't be too confused (As in pwp lmao). I can't stop anyone from reading it, but if you're a minor, at least try not to make your presence known to me.
š§A few of my planned fics will have dark themes in them. Please read the tags and make sure you are comfortable with viewing. I don't mind if you decide to skip as long as you're comfortable.
š§Hopefully I will be able to take requests and commissions one day! But there are things I will not write which are: Big age gaps (Dilf trope/milf trope) the maximum age gap I'm willing to write is 4 years (4 years is also kinda toeing the line), explicit non-con, daddy/mommy kink, hard bondage, watersports, scat, incest (in any case I open NSFW requests), and paedophilia or necrophilia.
š§People who are here to spread hate are not welcome. I don't care if you've had a bad experience with a certain person from a certain group, that does not excuse you hating the whole community because of what one or two people did unless the community's main purpose is already fucked up from the get-go.
š§If you dislike or hate children it's fine, but please do not openly hate or dislike them because I hope to post a lot of family-related fics (yes even the not so good parts about kids). Comments like "This is why I hate children" or "Just throw the baby out the plane" are not welcome. (You are however, free to call them names, does not indicate much bc those lil idiots probably don't know what those mean).
š§Please be a bit patient with me when sending asks, comments, or DMs. I get nervous when someone I don't/barely know interacts with me and I need some time to fully process and formulate answers. It may take a few minutes or maybe even hours for me to answer, but I will try to answer all comments, asks, or DMs I receive.
š§It has come to my attention that bullying from anonymous asks is far more common than I expected. I opened anonymous asks so people with horrible anxiety can have an easier time interacting with me as I also struggle with said fact. If I ever get (god forbid) overwhelming hate, I will close anonymous asks for the time being.
For now these are all the rules for my blog, but remember, it can always change depending on how it goes from here. You can ask for further explanations about my rules through the comments or ask, just not a 'why' question.
Commissions Redux
Hi Folks!
This has been copied from my main blog and cleaned up a bit, since Iām trying to separate the fan stuff from the main to keep something like a semblance of an order. Commissions are therefore moved from Mana-chanās Corner to here. They are still open and perfectly free, just read the rules, please. In case you wish to support me, you can do either of these things:
Ā» Leave a Tip
Ā» Buy Me a Coffee
As I am currently jobless (thank you Corona) every bit is appreciated.Ā
» Full Update
For a long time I didnāt take any commissions because the fandoms and pairings I have inspiration for is a limited fraction of my active fandoms (i.e. the fandoms I engage with via reading fic, commenting, enjoying content, reblogging, etc.) and I didnāt want to disappoint.Ā
Recently, in an unexpected strike of utter genius (which only took me like... 5 years to work out), I had the epiphany to compile a list of fandoms+pairings Iād be more than happy to write as you desire.
Ā» Commission Rules/FAQ. Please read before commissioning.
Ā» For full list of available fandoms/genres click below.
Ā» Fandoms
Ā» The Untamed | Mo Dao Zu Shi
The most recent fandom, also the one that currently dominates my mind.Ā
Including: CQL, Novel, Movies. I havenāt read a lot of the source material, but Iām intending to and I already did some research. For now I think I prefer a mix of canons.Ā
Ā» Pairings
Ā» Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian
Ā» Jiang Cheng & Wei Wuxian (mostly gen, but I believe I could do something sexual/romantic as well, but please ask first if you have any specific ideas)
Ā» Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing (please read the rules)
Ā» Jiang Cheng/Wen Ning (tentative)
Ā» Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian
Ā» Nie Mingjue/Lan Xichen (tentative, though I mostly see myself as writing them on the side)
Ā» Any version of the 3zun (same as above)
Ā» Lan Xichen/Wei Wuxian
Ā» Jin Zixuan/Wei Wuxian
Ā» Specific Canons / Prompts
The Untamed basically exploded over my head and didnāt leave me alone. In the past few months a few plotbunnies developed which Iād all love to write at one point. You can chose to prompt me either of these or pick any general prompt, or anything youād like to read, as long as it aligns with what I can write.
Ā» The First Witness
Genre: Case Fic, Modern AU, Canon retell, Drama, Tragedy, Romance, M/M
Pairings: WWX/LWJ
Includes: Forensic Medical Examiner Wei Wuxian, Inspector Lan Wangji, Single Dad Wei Wuxian, Wei Sizhui / Wen Yuan, the dead ones are dead, Badass Grandmother Baoshan Sanren, Yunmeng Bros Reconciliation, Businessman Jiang Cheng, Murder Mystery, Pining, Getting Together, HIV positive character, past off-screen rape (mentioned only). Itās basically what it says, a canon retell wrapped in a modern day case fic. It was the first thing that I had inspiration for.
Ā» Nurse Wei Wuxian slice of life Modern AU
Genre: Modern AU, slice of life, recovery, drama, tragedy, adoption, M/M, hurt & comfort, getting together, romance, fluff
Pairings: WWX/LWJ
Includes: pediatric nurse Wei Wuxian, pediatric nurse MianMian, elementary school teacher Lan Wangji, pediatrician Lan Xichen, intense care nurse Jiang Yanli, intense care doctor Wen Qing, teacherās aide Wen Ning, Yunmeng reconciliation, only some are dead, Wen family+WWX living together.Ā
Premise: Former convict Wei Wuxian, fresh out of nursing school, applies for a job at Dr. Lan Xichenās pediatric practice. Lan Xichen (who sometimes takes pro bono foster children abuse cases) isnāt quite sold on the idea of a former felon turned nurse attending to already traumatized children, but upon interview decides to give WWX a chance. Not only does he never regret it, it turns out itās to be the best decision heās ever made, not only in regards to his practice. Meddling ensues, love blossoms, truths are revealed, happy end. Probably the fluffiest story on the list.
Ā» ABO Yunmeng Shuanjie Fake Marriage AU
Not what you think. Does not involve pseudo-incest (at least not for a long time, havenāt decided on the end results yet). First ABO Iāve ever considered writing, but all the more exciting, since I know now what I want of it.
Pairing: WWX/LWJ (temporal, non-endgame - so far, platonic), WWX & JC (gen, ruling partners)
Includes: fake marriage, extra marital affair, male pregnancy, abo (mostly non-traditional, I think?), not actual pseudo incest, adoption, canon divergence, not everybody dies, Wen Chao being a monster, sexual assault (interrupted), golden core loss, NO golden core transfer, misunderstandings, complicated political situations, the Wens are saved and live in Lotus Pier, a-Yuan is still adopted, āsometimes love is not enoughā
Premise: shortly after concluding the studies at Cloud Recesses LWJ starts courting WWX. Engagement is discussed between the two clans, but the Wen indoctrination and the burning of the Cloud Recesses gets in between. When LWJ refuses to lie in order to save WWX from Wen Chaoās assault, JC steps in and pretends to be the one engaged to WWX to save his brother from a forced bond. To prevent this from being debunked and to ensure a future marriage (which will now be more challenging to achieve, given the state of Cloud Recesses), LWJ and WWX mate and bond in the Xuanwu cave. Then Lotus Pier is sacked, JC loses his golden core, the Jiangs are dead and the Yunmeng siblings flee for their lives, find refuge in Yiling, etc. Plays out as in canon except they find out WWX is pregnant and transferring the golden core would cause an abortion. WWX still says do it, but changes his mind in the last minute, leading to JC finding out about his plan upon waking up and remaining coreless. They flee to Meishan and marry to protect WWXās reputation (since a marriage would now be impossible for a long time on both sides - Gusu and Yunmeng, AND JC needs WWX more than ever and WWX is not abandoning his little brother) Sunshot happens, WWX invents the control tower & still saves the Sunshot campaign. The sixteen years that follow are utter chaos.
Ā» Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian arranged marriage AU
You know what this is inspired by.Ā
Pairing: Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian (unfullfilled, for a long time)
Includes: arranged marriage, some characters die, Nie Mingjue dies but later, revenge, wwx adopts a-yuan, canon divergence, slow burn, learning to love, the Wens live, political intrigues, wwx and nhs teaming up against jgy
Premise: To save the Wens and himself from qi deviation Wei Wuxian marries Nie Mingjue (in spite of being in love with LWJ). Slowly some truths are revealed and feelings blossom but some tragedies cannot be prevented. NMJ realizes the feelings that are between WWX and LWJ, but they both marry regardless. Later WWX realizes that NMJ is similarly in love with Lan Xichen. With time they learn to love and respect each other, NMJ learns about what WWX did for JC, WWX learns clarity to play for NMJ when JGY nearly succeeds killing him (WWX suspects but he has no proof). NMJ still dies (disappears) and widower WWX spends the next decade or so seeking revenge and searching for his husbandās body so that he can rest in peace. Itās all very bittersweet, but thereās a happy ending.
Ā» Hakuouki + Extended UniverseĀ
The longest active and steadiest fandom. I know exactly what Iāll write and what not.
Including characters from: Urakata, Toki no Kizuna, the most recent overhauls (Kyoto Winds, Edo Blossoms). Iāve seen all three anime seasons, played a few routes of Kyoto Winds and read some walkthroughs. Iām not completely done with all of them, but Iāll take the time to research if the commission demands it.
Ā» Pairings
Ā» Harada Sanosuke/Nagakura Shinpachi (I lovingly refer to them as my naval battle cruiser)
Ā» Harada Sanosuke/Shiranui Kyou
Ā» Shiranui Kyou/Takasugi Shinsaku
Ā» Kondou Isami/Hijikata Toushizou (tentative)
Ā» Hijikata Toushizou/Saitou Hajime (tentative)
Ā» Nagakura Shinpachi/Saitou Hajime
Ā» Saitou Hajime/Toudou Heisuke
Ā» Yukimura Chizuru/Sen-hime
Ā» Ibuki Ryuunosuke/Kosuzu (please read the rules)
Ā» Specific Canons / Prompts:
Iāve had a number of inspirations for this, which Iāve never written, but would love to delve into. You can chose to prompt me either of these or, of course, pick a general prompt.
Ā» Fabulous Family Series
The one in progress, you can check it out on AO3. You can prompt me in this, if thereās something youād like to read.
Pairings (current and planned): Harada/Nagakura, Kondou/Hijikata, Okita/Chizuru (casual), Heisuke/Saitou, Takasugi/Shiranui, Chizuru/Sen-chan, Ibuki/Kosuzu, Ibuki->Saitou (one-sided crush), Saitou/Chizuru (temporal)
Tags: adoption, modern AU, lgbtq+ issues, M/M, genderfluid character, disabled character (future), teenage pregnancy (future), slice of life, sexual assault (future), child abuse (future reveal), romance, ace/aro character, casual sex, underage sex,Ā
Ā» Gender Swap AU
Main Ship: Harada/Nagakura
Side Ship: Ibuki/Kosuzu
Summary: Sannan secretly tests a version of his experimental Ochimizu on a few of the captains. The result is that the new day dawns with some drastic changes to their bodies that have nothing to do with white hair, glowing eyes or bloodthirst, but with a whole other set of complications.Ā
Premise: Original story was supposed to be about Shinpachi developing and unexpected attraction to Sano, them āexperimentingā together and Sano falling pregnant. While the others manage to turn back to their original bodies, Sano doesnāt and it is all very complicated. Eventually he does (after giving birth), but instead of it being a good thing it just makes things more complicated. In the end, he choses to live in a female body instead of death and marries Shinpachi. Would include trans issues, gender dysphoria, friendship vs. love, the nature of attraction, respect, feminism and female issues. I wanted to write it as a multi-chapter, but never got around to it. But Iād love to put it out there in any form I can.
Ā» Prince of Tennis
Tentatively putting this down as one of my oldest fandoms. I never wrote for it as cosistently as with other fandoms, but a few years back I rp-ed it for quite a while and could probably still write for it, if the pairingās right.Ā
Including: ShinTeniPuri characters up to Pirates and Black Holes (I havenāt read much further, but Iāll probably catch up at one point? I always do.)
Ā» Pairings / Characters (mostly Shitenhouji and Higa centric)
Ā» Oshitari Kenya/Shiraishi Kuranosuke
Ā» Oshitari Kenya/Chitose Senri
Ā» Oshitari Kenya & Oshitari Yuushi (gen, ask me about cest)
Ā» Shishido Ryou/Oishi Shuuichirou
Ā» Oshitari Yuushi/Kikumaru Eiji
Ā» Oshitari Yuushi/Hirakoba Rin (this relates to that rp)
Ā» Kai Yuujirou & Hirakoba Rin (both gen and slash)
Ā» Kite Eishirou/Hirakoba Rin
Ā» Watanabe Osamu/Sakaki Tarou
Ā» Higa gen
Ā» Shitenhouji gen and casual relationships (ask me about specific ones)
Ā» Hara Tetsuya/Taira Yoshiyuki
Ā» Mori Juuzaburou & Hara Tetsuya (mostly gen, but I probs could do casual slash as well)
Ā» Ochi Tsukimitsu/Mori Juuzaburou
Ā» Marui Bunta/Hara Tetsuya (you will never get this, but it derives from that rp I did and would still def write it if people are interested)
Ā» Tango Pair (Sanada Genichirou/Atobe Keigo)
Ā» Specific Canons / Prompts
Most of what I had in my head has faded but a few things remained. Of course you can also come with your own prompt at me.
Ā» College AU, future fic
Premise: Everyone has grown up and moved on. The Oshitari cousins are now rooming together, both studying medicine at Tokyo University. Theyāre upper neighbors with Shishido Ryou (paedagogy) and Oishi Shuuichirou (medicine), who both miss their doubles partners, but have seemingly moved on from their middle school days and broken hearts. No such thing can be said about Kenya, who canāt get over his break up with Shiraishi following their graduation, or Yuushi, who seems to hold secrets of his own.
I havenāt developed much for this, most of it are scattered ideas, but Iād love to explore it. Iāve thought of some pairings for it, but none of them final. It would also leave a lot of room for casual stuff or one-night stands. Itās actually an ideal prompt premise, from that standpoint.
Pairings (at start, no necessarily final): Oshitari Kenya/Shiraishi Kuranosuke (past), Oishi Shuuichirou/Shishido Ryou (current), Oishi Shuuichirou/Kikumaru Eiji (past), Shishido Ryou/Ootori Choutarou (past), Oshitari Yuushi/Kikumaru Eiji (current, secret),Ā
Ā» It takes two to Tango / Tango towards Destruction
An old fic that was supposed to be a series which I never finished, but could pick it up and remaster it. Itād be a nostalgia project.Ā
Pairing: Tango Pair
Premise: Atobeās father finds out about him and Sanada dating and threatens to disown him if they donāt break up. In the original Atobe runs away, but Iām thinking now he simply might not take it seriously enough and then it would escalate. He ends up moving in with the Sanada family. Your typical rich boy loses everything and struggles through poverty, finding meaning, building a life for himself, coming off age.Ā
Ā» One Piece
A fandom older than even TeniPuri itās been with me the longest. Unfortunately it doesnāt inspire me anymore the way it used to, but Iād still be able to write some things for it, if the right muse struck me. I kinda want to. Nostalgia, you know.
Ā» Pairings
Ā» Zoro/Sanji
Ā» Ace/Zoro
Ā» Ace/Sanji
Ā» Luffy/Law (tentative, like, I ship them hard but I donāt know if Iād be able to write something for them? Oh but Iād like to try)
Ā» Mihawk/Shanks
Ā» Mihawk & Zoro & Perona family dynamics
Ā» Zeff & Sanji adopted family dynamics
Ā» Usopp & Yasopp gen
Ā» Izo? Iād like to try an Izo.
Ā» Canons
Ā» Canonverse
Set in the original canon of the fandom.
Including (not limited to): backstory - past canon, present canon, future fic (please specify), canon divergence
Ā» Modern AU
Including (not limited to): no powers, modern with magic (potential, please ask), slice of life, mystery, case fic,Ā ājob AUā (coffee shop, doctors, idols, etc., please specify/ask)
Ā» Sci-fi AU
Including: original sci-fi canon, Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, Dune (tentative), Hyperion (tentative), for everything else ask. I know a lot of sci-fi, but not enough lore for each of them to set a story in. I might be interested but it'd necessitate research.
Ā» High Fantasy AU
Including (not limited to): original fantasy canon, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Witcher, but overall Iād prefer if you ask about this. I havenāt read/seen a lot of the most recent and popular franchises (mostly because Iām writing my own high fantasy and donāt want it to be too influenced by other things, and someone already told me it sounds like Game of Thrones, so that oneās a big no. Sorry...)
Ā» No Powers, other than modern AU
Including (not limited to): everything that doesnāt fall under the modern AU list, but has no powers in it, i.e. historical AU (specify time & culture), future AU (near & far), cyberpunk dystopia (possibly), post-apocalyptic (possibly). I donāt write zombies.
Ā» Superpowers / Hero AU
Including (not limited to): X-Men, Avengers, Wildstorm Universe, original superhero canon
Ā» Genres
I do mostly serious stuff, like drama, tragedy, intrigues, arranged marriage, tragic backstory, etc. I like to put my characters through a lot of suffering. I always joke that itās very easy to spot my favorite character by the amount of torture I put them through. I feel that it makes the happy ending weigh even more. Sometimes I even prefer a bad ending, if it gives the story more meaning (I mean, imagine LotR trilogy have a happy ending. It would totally take away all the development and the lessons the characters went through.) I wish I could write light stuff but so far I have not succeeded. I use a lot of sarcasm and irony though?Ā
My shorter fics tend to be fluffy and sweet rather than funny, if full of playful banter and teasing. Relationships are usually depicted in a naturalistic rather than romantic way (Iām ace/aro myself, and I have lots of opinions about the nature of love and attraction, and how a functioning relationship ideally looks like and it tends to seep into my writing). Instead of traditional romance I like to write a non-traditional one. Slow burn, instead of love on first sight. Learning to love instead of falling hard. But it also depends on the pairing. I can write most things if I put my mind to it, so donāt hesitate to prompt me and Iāll let you know whether it works for me or not.
Iām not shy of dealing with child abuse, assault, suicidal ideation, trauma, disability and other difficult topics in my writing, so if you wanna request any of these or something similar Iām a-okay with it, as long as you discuss it with me. Iām not knowledgeable in everything so itās likely Iāll need to do research, but Iām more than alright with it. Honestly, itās very probable that Iād love to try.Ā
Ā» Kinks
Iām okay with most stuff. Where I draw the line is the really hardcore stuff like scat and kinks involving feces, some forms of humiliation, zoophilia, necrophilia, mutilation, stuff like that.Ā
Iām alright with both dub-con & non-con (although I refuse to depict is as normalized, or glorified), bondage, s&m, dom/sub, light bdsm (ask me about the harder stuff. Iām not against it, Iām just not always in the mood or right mindset for writing it), omorashi (tentative, ask me), daddy kink, breath play, age play, spanking, verbal humiliation, dirty talk, edging, come eating, orgasm denial,... all the good stuff.Ā
Descendants of the Moon Masterlistword count: 2,755 Tag list: @chastja Ā @multi-fan-trash @serpentityx @syublushĀ Dm me if you want to be on the tag list!
Word Count:Ā 2,811
Key: Italics- things that happened in the drama but do not old any importance to the story line
Key: Bold- Dialogue said in the Drama
Episode 5:
*Doctor Daniel comes back to Urk to his wife Ye Hwa* *part of the medical team goes to visit the solar plantation* *they go look for the missing kid* *they go to the restaurant*
Yoo Ji didn't know what she was going to do, but she knew she had to get out of the base. She went to the city. She planned to just walk around and check in on her usual sources, they most likely wonāt have updated but it wonāt hurt to try
As she left the solar energy plant she made her way back to the inner city and into a convenience store to grab a snack. She picked out her food and went to pay for it when she noticed a face that was familiar to her. She realized that he was the fake UN guy. He was holding a beer in his hand and talking to another guy. Her attention was brought back to the cashier, she took her stuff and walked out but stayed hidden from the two men. She watched as they interacted, she had hoped she wasnāt right when she said the cops were cheap, sheās proven wrong. She stayed there to watch them, maybe even tail them since she had nowhere to be.
She unscrewed her bottled water and took a sip, she almost spat it out when she saw Shi Jin come out from the restaurant a couple of feet away from the men, Mo Yeon behind him. He noticed them, his disbelief clear on his face, Yoo Ji wanted to laugh if this wasnāt just a horrible situation.Ā
She decided that she might need to intervene so she crept up closer to hear their conversation. She couldn't get too close or she would risk getting caught.
ā Can you find the hardware store that we went to the last time? āĀ
ā You made sure I know, around the corner, across the street ā
Shi Jin nodded and watched her go, once she was out of sight, he got out the gun he kept with him, Yoo Ji rolled her eyes, of course, he would use the most extreme choice. Yoo Ji contemplated going over there and confronting the boys with him, but she held back, she probably will need to use the element of surprise later.Ā
Shi Jin pointed his gun at them, Yoo Ji couldn't see their expressions as they turned their backs towards her.
ā I think weāve met before ā
ā You don't seem very surprised, how is a peacekeeper threatening an unarmed civilian with a gun? ā the white man said.
Yoo Ji mentally snorted, unarmed? Both men had pistols on them. It seems like Shi Jin noticed too. He unhinged his jaw and raised his eyebrow slightly. He cocked his gun towards the man before aiming at the car next to them and shooting the tire.
ā You're not a civilian, and you're not unarmed ā, Shi Jin responded. Yoo Jiās ears are still ringing from the echo of the gunshot. Both men drew out their weapons.
ā I know you have connections with the cops, why do you keep showing up near me? ā
It seems that the gunshot alerted their men inside as five men came out, four equally armed, while the last wasn't, he was wearing a black suit and sunglasses shielding his face. Yoo Jiās eyes darted to Shi Jin, he was outnumbered. She halted and it seemed like Shi Jin recognized this man, Yoo Ji couldn't place her finger on it but she feels like sheās met him before too. He said something before aiming a gun at one of his men before giving it back to the man.
ā Long time no see, Lieutenant, ā he said to Shi Jin, Yoo Ji was shocked, they knew each other? From the military? The man took off his shades, and everything clicked. Yoo Ji was staring at Agus, a captain who went rogue and dealt weapons for a higher price, consumed by greed.
ā Captain Agus? Why are you⦠ā Shi Jin trailed off looking hurt and confused.
ā Changed jobs as you can see, now I can grow my hair out, luckily the jobs are pretty much the same, shooting guns and making money ā Yoo Ji scoffed, if they were not armed, she would've loved kicking his teeth in. it seemed like things were getting heated so she might as well make an entrance.Ā
ā What happened to you? Your call sign is still legendary in the Delta Force ā
ā Being a legend doesn't pay ā he shrugged, Yoo Ji made her appearance then she walked up the staircase that she was hiding behind and stopped right next to Shi Jin, who was surprised as much as the other men.Ā
āI guess being a legend doesn't stop you from becoming a greedy motherfucker either?ā she said, immediately the guys in the back raised their weapons.
āI wouldn't, I am an unarmed civilian and that would be a violation even the police can't be bribed into letting go.ā She tsked at their defensiveness.
āWhat are you doing here?ā Shi Jin gritted his teeth.Ā
āI was having a strollā she rolled her eyes.
āI see you that he hasnāt killed you yetā Agus responded to her insult, glaring at her.Ā
āLong time no see Argusā she winked, he glared even harder. Her heartbeat faster at the thought of the person he was talking about, she didn't even want to think about how he knew about that.Ā
āIt's Agusā he growled out.Ā
āSame difference.ā she shrugged. The boys in the back still not lowering their guns, she cocked an eyebrow at them then turned to Agus. she was feeling her confidence seep through her again when Shi Jin didnāt push it and instead looked in between them with confusion
āTell your boys to put āem down, if you haven't forgotten I have high ranking connections, and theyāre more influential than any sum you can give to the copsā she threatened with ease, this wasn't her first run-in with these boys, and it certainly wouldn't be the last.Ā
āOne day, Mun, you won't be able to see the light of dayā he glowered.
āCertainly today is not the day, I wanna go out with a big bang, preferably not with that cheap-ass gunā she retorted. Shi Jin was just standing there frozen in shock. How is it whenever something happens sheās always around to provoke it.Ā
āHow's your nose?ā she asked the white guy that faked his injuries in the car accident. He growled at her, she smiled sweetly at him.
āListen here, Captain ā Agus started halting her attempt at conversation, he looked at her with a pointed glare.Ā
ā There are many gangs in this neighborhood, and they have no fear, no rules and no honor ā he scoffed pausing, ā They got no country to serve ā
ā This is your last warning, mind your own business ā he warned him, Yoo Ji rolled her eyes. It didn't go unnoticed by Agus but he chose to let it go.Ā
ā Even back then and now, youāre far too empathetic. ā
ā I guess so ā Shi Jin answered in Korean, so far the conversation was in English, but now only Yoo Ji can understand what he's saying.
ā I interfered with God's will unnecessarily. Someone on the verge of death must have had a reason to be. ā
ā Do you hide behind your language? ā
ā For godās sake, piss off, donāt come near me, or else youāll have to pay the price ā
āBye Argus, see you again next timeā Yoo Ji waved as she left with Shi Jin, he was a ball full of emotions. She didn't want to say anything to provoke him but he seemed like he had other plans.Ā
āWhat were you thinking? involving yourself in our conversation? Why do you keep on risking your life? To prove a point?ā he scolded.Ā
āCaptain Yoo, I can handle myself,ā she responded icily. He shook his head.Ā
āDoes Gwang Nam know that you're in town?ā he asked her.
āHe is not my babysitterā she snapped at him, seriously what's up with this guy.Ā
āI am calling him to pick you upā Shi Jin stated, but before he can even dial his number he got a phone call. It was from Mo Yeon. All he heard was a big honk and a bunch of ruckuses, he looked up and made eye contact with Yoo Ji, that didn't sound very good.Ā
ā Hello? Hello? āĀ
ā Captain Yoo? ā her voice came through the speaker, she sounded shaken up.
ā You listened to me well. I heard you borrowed the car. Where are you? I finished my work and I'm about to leave .ā Shi Jin replied looking at Yoo Ji, trying to communicate with his eyes. Something happened, she nodded and got out her phone.
ā Please save me! Please save me! ā she yelled out with terror. That snapped everyone into action.Ā
āGo! go! Iāll call Gwang Nam to pick me up!ā she ushered him towards his car. She looked around one more time, she caught a glimpse of one of Agusās men lingering around, but he ducked once she fully turned around. She shook her head, sheāll pick a fight another day. Right now she has to figure out a way to get to the base without asking Gwang Nam to pick her up.Ā
She thought it would be ironic that she was in town to avoid him and then end up asking him to come to get her. She decided the best way was just to go to the hardware store Ye Hwa ran and ask for a car.Ā Once she was able to get that sorted, she arrived on the base, she managed to get through halfway without running into anyone.Ā
āWhere have you been all day?ā Woo Geun asked with a smug tug on his lips.Ā
āAroundā she cryptically responded, usually he doesnāt really care where she is, it seems like someone was trying to find her.Ā
āAnswer it clearly Mun Yoo Ji, weāre not playing games,ā Woo Geun said with a serious tone.
āWhy did something happen?ā she asked curiously, killing her.
āPiccolo was looking for you,ā Cheol Ho told her as he walked up to them.Ā
āHuh, who is that?ā Yoo Ji frowned in confusion.Ā
āGwang Namā Woo Geun answered.Ā
āWhat? Where?ā Yoo Ji panicked and looked around, when she realized that he was responding to her question instead of calling him out as if he was there, she looked like a deer caught in headlights. She mentally slapped her forehead, she just outed herself, great.
āDid something happen between you two?ā Cheol Ho asked. Curiosity nipping at his sides.
āNo, why would you say that?ā She avoided eye contact.Ā
āI don't know maybe cuz you were hiding all day and didn't cause any trouble,ā Woo Geun saidĀ
āHow do you know for sure she didn't cause trouble?ā another voice butted in, it was Shi Jin.
āIs Mo Yeon ok?ā she immediately asked, he nodded in confirmation.Ā
āShe was hanging from a cliff,ā Shi Jinās exasperated voice explained. Yoo Jiās eyebrows went up, how does Mo Yeon manage to put herself in situations like this.Ā
āI better go check on herā she tried to escape their little group.Ā
āWait wait, what happened between you and Gwang Nam that you didn't call him to pick you up?ā Shi Jin interrogated. Yoo Ji cursed under her breath.Ā
āHow did you know?āĀ
āDoctor Danielās car is right there,ā he pointed out.Ā
āWell, nothing really just-ā
āWhat are you guys talking about?ā a new voice cut in, and that made Yoo Ji curse even more profusely. It was Gwang Nam. if only she had made her escape earlier.Ā
āI really have to go check on Mo Yeon, excuse me,ā she shouldered through the men and came head to head (well, head to chest more accurately) with Gwang Nam.
āWhere have you been all day?āĀ
āJust...here and thereā she awkwardly laughed.Ā
āShe was in town, she almost got herself shot,ā Shi Jin elaborated. Yoo Ji turned around and glared at him.
āI did notāĀ
āAre you ok? Are you hurt anywhere?ā he started fussing over her. Shi Jin smiles cheekily and goes to get changed, he is dripping wet. Cheol Ho and Woo Geun left with him.Ā
āI gotta goā Yoo Ji excused once more and tried to make her getaway. Thankfully she was able to escape.Ā
āMo Yeon, are you okay? I heard you got into an accidentā Yoo Ji went to check on her friend. Mo Yeon had already changed and was just sitting there sitting in silence gazing at nothing. Yoo Ji guessed she was pretty shaken up from the events.Ā
āI am fineā
She sat down next to her to try and comfort her when Shi Jin came in with two cups full of steaming liquids. Yoo Ji was sure they wanted to be alone, so she moved to stand up.Ā
āIāll check on you later, I have stuff to tell youā she smiled at the girl.
āThat stuff would include my First Sergeant Lim, right?ā he joked, Yoo Jiās cheeks flushed but she shook her head.
āFocus on your own drama, Captainā she commented.Ā
She made her way back to her own tent but even then it had gotten dark, and she was lost in her thoughts.Ā
-in the next morning, she went to return the car to Daniel, but Mo Yeon and Shi Jin were there too-
āGood morning,ā she greeted Shi Jin as they walked up to the store.Ā
āWhy are you guys here again?ā Yoo Ji asked.
āDanielās car is getting towed in, weāre here to...assess the damageā he chose his words carefully, as Mo Yeon narrowed her eyes at him.Ā
ā Why couldn't you just save me without putting the car in the water? ā she paused, shaking her head.
ā No. You saved me, but I'm just complaining. Sorry. ā she shook her head, Yoo Ji chuckled, she went inside to turn in the keys to Ye Hwa.Ā
When she came out she saw the front door and the bumper on the floor with Doctor Daniel on the floor looking heartbroken, she couldn't help but let out a laugh.Ā
After Daniel finished his business with the towing truck he went inside to get the things Shi Jin asked for. Yoo Ji was still there since her ride would be Shi Jin. Apparently Shi Jin ordered a bunch of walkie talkies since he wants to take precautions after yesterdayās events.Ā
āThey're more convenient anyways.ā
After that they made their way back to base, Shi Jin explained how to use the two-way radios, well he at least tried before Yoo Ji told him she knows how to use them because sheās used them before.Ā
āYou might want to explain to Mo Yeon, sheās never used one beforeā she winked.Ā
āJust tell me what station is yours and the medicalās?ā
āStation 3 and 7,ā he gave a half-smile before Yoo Ji saluted at him and left.Ā
*Myung Ju and Mo Yeon meet* *Shi Jin and Myung Ju have their conversation while Mo Yeon tries to listen to it from outside*
*the meeting in the Medi-cube*
ā The on-call duty for tonight will be Doctor Ha and-- ā Mo Yeon was interrupted.
ā Is there anyone who will do it instead of me? ā Doctor Song asked, putting up his hand.
ā If there isn't, then I will do it. ā he nodded looking satisfied, the room broke out in chuckled.Ā
āOh! Why are you guys here?ā Yoo Ji asked in surprise when she walked into the common room. Mo Yeon pointed up, towards the fan. Yoo Ji nodded and smiled.Ā
ā This is Cube B. Pretty One, respond. Over. ā a voice came through the radio. Mo Yeon smiled.
ā This is unexpectedly pretty fun. Pretty One is here. Over. ā Mo Yeon responded.
ā What is today's lunch menu? Over. ā the voice asked.
ā I'll check and let you know. Over. āĀ
