Rafah is a massive shelter with children and elderly unable to evacuate
Feb 12th 2024, 00:15 GMT
Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Rafah in southern Gaza Strip
The Israeli army has been saying that there’s no victory without invading Rafah and dismantling the military capabilities of Hamas movements here.
But the civilians here are very concerned and this has triggered wide-scale condemnation among different international organisations and states in the region about the disastrous potential consequences.
Specifically, right now Rafah has become a massive shelter for more than 1.9 million Palestinians.
Evacuation centres and makeshift camps have been established recently alongside the borders of Egypt, which will absolutely pose a new significant threat also for Egyptian national security.
And let’s be very aware about the dangerous humanitarian catastrophe that will result if that military incursion happens, specifically among children and among elderly people who are unable to easily evacuate the city as Israel has claimed.
What is happening in Gaza’s Rafah as Israel threatens to attack?
Feb 12th 2024, 00:30 GMT
More than a million Palestinians are trapped at Gaza’s southernmost point, with the Israeli army preparing a ground attack.
But what is Rafah and what are the details around this announced Israeli “operation”?
Palestinian Rafah is 64sq km (25sq miles) and, as Israel assaulted Gaza these past four months, more and more people have been herded into it by Israeli forces who keep promising safety “further south” – which never materialised.
People are in dense clusters in the limited space not filled with debris or being bombed by Israel. Conditions are dire, with severe shortages.

The Israeli occupation army today stormed the city of Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, shutting down the Ibrahimi Mosque and preventing Muslim worshippers from entering, according to eyewitnesses and local authorities.
Eyewitnesses said Israeli forces raided the Wadi Al-Hariya neighbourhood, searching several homes. The incursion also targeted the Jabal Abu Rumman neighbourhood, where soldiers and snipers were seen taking positions on rooftops of residential buildings, they added.
Sheikh Mutaz Abu Sneina, director of the Ibrahimi Mosque, reported that the mosque was closed at dawn without prior notice, however Jews are being allowed into the Muslim holy site. “The occupation forces closed the mosque from 4:00 a.m. without warning, preventing worshippers from entering,” Abu Sneina said.
The Israeli army confirmed the mosque’s closure in a statement on its account on X, . It cited security concerns following a “sabotage operation” late Friday in the illegal Gush Etzion settlement bloc and Karmei Tzur settlement as the reason for intensified inspections and security checks for Palestinian worshippers. The army added that the mosque was briefly closed “for security reasons” and later reopened under strict security measures. [...]

Notes from @el-shab-hussein: this comes as the occupation proceeds to ethnically cleanse Jenin as well. It is under siege and already 70% of the infrastructure of the city has been destroyed. Another Ghazzah overnight. It is not just Jenin and Al-Khalil, but the whole of the West Bank.

The Ministry of Health says a 20-year-old Palestinian man died of wounds sustained by an Israeli bullet to the chest during an incursion into the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank that also left five others injured. In a Bedouin community northwest of the West Bank city of Jericho, a local source was cited as saying by the Wafa news agency that Israeli settlers descended in vehicles to intimidate Palestinians for the second time in the past 24 hours. Wafa also spoke to local sources west of the city of Nablus, who said a group of Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian vehicles with stones, damaging several cars. In the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of al-Issawiya, Israeli authorities reportedly forced a Palestinian to demolish his own home and displace his family of nine, claiming he lacked a permit to live there. He was forced to carry out the demolition himself since Israeli authorities charge exorbitant fees if the municipality razes the structure, Wafa reported.

Israelis reach the top as the most operational F-35 pilots in the world
During the ongoing war, the Adir F-35 pilots emerged as the most operational at the global level, with one of them making history by intercepting a Yemeni cruise missile pointed at Eilat; 'I was thrilled', the pilot reflected on the historical defense with the advanced aircraft.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/18/2024 - 00:34in Aeronautical, Military Accidents
The pilots of the F-35 Adir fighters have been responsible for part of the attacks in Lebanon since the beginning of the war, taking advantage of the advanced stealth capabilities of the F-35 jets. About 700 kilometers to the south, between Eilat and the Red Sea, these aircraft serve as the last and constant line of defense against the threat of Yemen's Houthi cruise missiles, an action that has been recorded in the world history of stealth aircraft.
The 140º Squadron of the formidable F-35 targeted hundreds of objectives, including Hamas tunnels and hiding places in the Gaza Strip during the war. Two of the unit's latest fighter planes were also among the first to reach the Gaza border in response to the murderous incursion into the Western Negev on October 7.
Tumblr media
Three weeks ago, the pilots of the Adir fighters were the first to attack the most distant target openly attacked by Israel's Defense Forces in Lebanon since the beginning of the war: Hezbollah's weapons depots near Baalbek, northeast of Beirut and about 100 kilometers from the Israeli-Lebanese border.
Last week, pilots of Israeli stealth jets completed their fourth attack in the same area as the Shiite terrorist army: two Hezbollah command centers next to weapons depots. Although the most advanced combat aircraft of the Israeli Air Force are usually reserved for strategic missions in the northern or eastern arenas, the military constantly employs them in the Gaza Strip, along with a permanent presence of combat aircraft in the skies of the region for immediate availability. to support the forces operating on the ground - in addition to the planned air attacks.
Tumblr media
Adir's response capabilities for control, command and network allow pilots to accurately distinguish between different types of ammunition in the aircraft or other aircraft in the air, according to the type of "emerging" target at that time.
"Target planning for an attack can be performed from the ground, from the air, in a few minutes in an escape event, and this happens almost every day," explains a senior squad pilot. "The aircraft's special sensors create a comprehensive combat image, even for additional structures, even when we deal with a dense and less threatening combat sector for us as aircraft, such as the Gaza Strip. On the cabin screen, we see which bomb was selected - and launched. That's how we, with the Adirs, among other things, destroyed a multi-storey building in Gaza, which controlled the area and threatened our forces."
Tumblr media
Adir aircraft also integrate rescue operations for victims in additional aerial dimensions to the fight against helicopters, to isolate the area with "flash" bombs. Thus, combat helicopters and even helicopters such as Black Hawk or Yas'ur (Sikorsky CH-53) can safely descend to a height of 30 feet for evacuation of victims, while air security against anti-aircraft missiles and armed terrorists is provided by the Adir aircraft at a height of 30,000 feet.
During the ground offensive in Gaza, the Squadron Commander, Lieutenant Colonel M., entered the Gaza Strip on foot to have a view at eye level of the attacks for which he and his commanders are responsible, far from the coast of the Strip, and also to speak to his comrades of brigades and battalions, whose pilots provide constant assistance.
Tumblr media
In one of the scenes, Lieutenant colonel M. saw how the Israeli Air Force bombs fell only about 150 meters from the ground forces, as part of the close coordination between the forces.
However, the most significant strategic operation since the beginning of the war was carried out by the Adir pilots in the Red Sea area, facing the threat of the Houthis in Yemen. At any time, Adir aircraft ensure the southern entry of Israel - from the Gulf of Eilat and towards the south. A combined average of Houthi attacks may include the launch of about 20 missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and long-range ballistic missiles, each coming at different speeds, altitudes and directions against Israel.
Tumblr media
This divides the defense mission between the pilots and the air defense batteries, according to different layers: larger ground-to-ground missiles already launched from Yemen to Israel are shot down into the atmosphere by Arrow missiles, while others more difficult to detect and slower targets, such as drones, are controlled by the aircraft. A drone flies at a speed of 500 km/h, considered slower than missiles.
The F-35 can carry more payload compared to the F-16, and the military material is managed at the Nevatim Air Base. Sergeant Major Michael says: "From the beginning, we have a team of 40 people who always run to eight planes taking off and landing, immediately taking care to arm them with bombs, missiles and fuel."
Tumblr media
The U.S.-led international coalition in the Red Sea provides detection and often interception of the main components of the attacks. What remains, usually a small number of air threats, is intercepted by Adir aircraft or air defense systems in the last segment before entering the Eilat area.
Adir aircraft operate in this area as a kind of air control unit - due to the more advanced capabilities of the F-35, they can detect even low-altitude and slow-flying targets that are considered difficult to detect.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the war, Israeli Air Force pilots intercepted a cruise missile, marking the first time in the history of F-35 poachers around the world. The operation was carried out entirely in Hebrew, although it involved U.S. Army forces. "I saw the cruise missile in broad daylight through the Adir camera, at a relatively low altitude," said Major R., pilot of the 140º Squadron, who made history as the first to intercept a cruise missile with an F-35 aircraft.
? A cruise missile launched from the southeast toward Israeli airspace was successfully intercepted by F-35i fighter jets.
"My partner in the cabin was the one who saw the target. I executed the airstrike with a missile that I launched against him. I was thrilled in the cabin after the success of the attack,” added Major R.
Tumblr media
He also said: "We are evolving during combat. We have already updated our operational techniques and combat rotations, even against the possibility of cruise missile launches like these or simultaneous ballistic missile attacks. The cruise missile could easily have exploded in the Yoseftal Medical Center or a hotel where refugees from the South were housed. In these missions, I could find myself flying directly from the Eilat area to attack Gaza, then to the regions of Lebanon and Syria and, if necessary, to other areas within that long flight that lasted six and a half hours in Adir."

It’s been almost two weeks since the Ukrainian Armed Forces smashed through Russia’s border defenses in the Kursk region and began a surprise offensive that has advanced about 17 miles at its deepest point, according to Meduza’s estimates. Regional officials in Kursk have evacuated towns along the Ukrainian border, and more than 120,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. Vladimir Putin has met several times with top national security officials, but Russia’s president hasn’t yet bothered to make a national address, even though part of the country — a real part of the country, not just Ukrainian lands that Moscow claims — is now under foreign occupation.
At the same time, Russian troops are still attacking Ukrainian defenses in the Donbas, where Kyiv remains vulnerable after months of slow Russian advances. The world is watching to see if the Kursk incursion can force the Kremlin to pull soldiers from eastern Ukraine.
One of the most sensitive issues inside Russia related to Ukraine’s Kursk offensive is the use of conscript soldiers. To discuss the course of the Kursk incursion and to understand why sending conscripts into Russia’s new conflict zone is so tricky, The Naked Pravda spoke to RFE/RL journalists Mark Krutov and Sergey Dobrynin, who have tracked the war closely and recently wrote an article addressing how the Russian military plans to use conscripts amid Kyiv’s offensive in Kursk.

A few days ago, as I was about to leave Alrowwad, a rocket intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome exploded over Aida camp. Fragments were falling. Many of our solar panels exploded. I felt our building and the floor under me shaking. We are all safe, but what is it like when the bombs hit houses, explode buildings, and unearth the earth under you?  During the night between October 18th and 19th, until 4:00 a.m., Israeli forces made a wide incursion into Bethlehem with a focus on capturing workers from Gaza. They managed to capture 60 people, though many others were smuggled to various hiding places for safety. Yesterday morning, they gathered at the Church of the Nativity, feeling that this might be the most secure place in Bethlehem. The last two workers from Gaza that we had hosted at Alrowwad Cultural and Arts Society joined the others at the Church after the invasion. With so many emotions about our terrible situation, I wrote these poems. [x]

Kosovo and Serbia have traded accusations over a deadly stand-off between ethnic Serb gunmen and police in northern Kosovo.
One policeman and three of the gunmen were killed during a siege of a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Banjska village on Sunday.
Kosovo's PM Albin Kurti accused Serbia of supporting the armed group.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Kosovo officials bore ultimate responsibility for the deaths.
He said the three gunmen killed were Kosovo Serbs.
Sunday's clash marks one of the gravest escalations in Kosovo for years, and follows months of mounting tension between the two sides.
Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia - along with Belgrade's key allies China and Russia - does not recognise it.
Many Serbs consider it the birthplace of their nation. But of the 1.8 million people living in Kosovo, 92% are ethnic Albanians and only 6% are ethnic Serbs.
Why is violence flaring up in Kosovo
Peacekeepers in the middle as Kosovo-Serbia row escalates
The shooting began at about 03:00 local time (01:00 GMT), after Kosovan police said they arrived in Banjska, where about 30 heavily armed gunmen had earlier barricaded themselves in the monastery near the Serbian border.
Three of the gunmen were killed in battles through the day as police mounted what Kosovo's interior minister Xhelal Svecla described as a "clearance operation".
"We put this territory under control. It was done after several consecutive battles," he said.
The local authorities said six people were arrested, and a significant number of weapons was seized. The authorities did not say whether those detained took part in the attack.
Meanwhile, the Serbian Orthodox Church said the gunmen had left the monastery by night, Reuters news agency reported.
The Kosovan police officer was killed before the occupation of the monastery.
Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti blamed "Serbia-sponsored criminals" for the incursion, saying they were "professionals, with military and police background" who were financed and motivated by Belgrade.
Serbia's President Vucic hit back, blaming Mr Kurti for months of "provocations".
While describing the death of the Kosovo police officer as "absolutely reprehensible", he said Mr Kurti bore responsibility for the incident. "His only wish is to drag us into a war with Nato and that's the only thing he does all day".
Mr Vucic said there would have been fewer victims had Nato-led KFOR peacekeepers intervened.
There are currently about 4,500 peacekeepers in Kosovo.
The EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, condemned what he called the "hideous attack", saying those responsible must be brought to justice.
Tensions have run high in Kosovo, after violent clashes followed disputed local elections in May
Kosovo Albanian mayors were installed in majority-ethnic Serb areas, after local residents boycotted the polls.
Mr Borrell blamed Mr Kurti for failing to set up the association of Serb-majority municipalities which would give them more autonomy.
Nato deployed an additional 700 troops to Kosovo to deal with unrest in the northern town Zvecan following the elections.
Some 30 Nato peacekeepers and more than 50 Serb protesters were hurt in the ensuing clashes.

Israeli tanks enter Rafah, push close to border crossing with Egypt: Report
May 7th 2024, 03:00 GMT
A Palestinian security official and an Egyptian official have told the Associated Press (AP) news agency that Israeli tanks have entered Rafah, reaching to within 200 meters (almost 220 yards) from Rafah’s border crossing with neighbouring Egypt.
The Egyptian official told AP that the operation appeared to be limited in scope. The official, as well as Al-Aqsa TV, said Israeli officials had informed the Egyptians that its forces would withdraw after completing the operation.
The Israeli military declined to comment on the reported tank incursion.
AP said the Egyptian official, located on the Egyptian side of Rafah, and the Palestinian security official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the press.

It's Like a New Doom Game Has Just Been Released
Tumblr media
Doom endures eternally. Starting with the superb reboot released by Bethesda and continuing with Doom Eternal, which many consider the finest first-person shooter ever created, it has firmly established itself as a timeless classic on PC. However, within the series, there has always been one installment that has consistently divided even the most devoted Doom enthusiasts. Doom 3, released in 2004, departs from the fast-paced, kill-focused style of its predecessors in favor of a slower, more horror-driven approach. While it remains an excellent game, envision a complete remake of Doom 3 aimed at addressing some of its shortcomings and amplifying its standout moments. Enter Retchid, a fresh Steam shooter that feels like an entirely new Doom title and a comprehensive reimagining of the original Doom 3. Created by From Beneath Software, Retchid seems like it was plucked from the same era as Doom 3, FEAR, and Quake 4. In this game, you assume the role of an engineer working for the enigmatic corporation TEC (that's TEC, not UAC, with a knowing wink) and find yourself embroiled in a demonic incursion on one of Saturn's moons (yes, Saturn, not Mars). The game offers an abundance of weapons, lumbering zombies, and impeccably crafted monsters, resulting in a deliberately-paced yet consistently action-packed first-person shooter reminiscent of classic boomer shooters. This is Doom 3, but improved. Even from a visual perspective, Retchid evokes the aesthetics of '00s shooters admirably. From Beneath Software has done a commendable job in capturing the distinctive elements of id Tech 4 and LithTech—those robust metal panels, intricate textures, and subtle dynamic lighting. Featuring 20 levels divided into three episodes (a structure familiar to sci-fi FPS enthusiasts—where have we heard that before?), Retchid also allows you to upgrade your suit in a manner reminiscent of Dead Space. And, of course, it boasts an exceptional shotgun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuGSMlpIiZI If you're eager to experience Retchid, it's currently available in Steam Early Access. Recent reviews have awarded it a 'very positive' rating. So, if you've conquered Doom Eternal and are seeking an alternative take on Doom 3, Retchid is a must-play. Alternatively, if you're hankering for classic boomer shooters, consider diving into the best old games still accessible on PC. Or, if you're looking for something a bit beyond the mainstream, explore the world of indie games. Read the full article

Israeli forces destroyed a house in the al-Madares neighbourhood of the Tulkarem refugee camp in the north of the occupied West Bank, Wafa news agency reported. Sources within the camp told Wafa that Israeli forces blew up a house belonging to the al-Doush family after planting explosives inside it. Teams from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) entered the camp and evacuated individuals suffering from smoke inhalation in the aftermath of the explosion. At the same time, Israeli forces deployed more vehicles to the camp, surrounding it from all entrances, particularly along Nablus Street. Israeli military bulldozers also resumed destroying what they had demolished in previous incursions into the camp and in Tulkarem city.

Israeli forces advance in south Gaza, Turkey might enter Israel to help Palestinians, Erdogan compares Netanyahu to Hitler
Israeli troops on Sunday sent tanks into the southern Gaza Strip, where fierce fighting with Hamas militants continues, and medical officials in Gaza said Israeli military strikes on the enclave had killed 66 Palestinians in the past 24 hours. (Updated at 12:00 p.m.)
Israeli tanks advanced into the three towns of Al-Karara, Al-Zanna and Bani Suhaila in the east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, and medics said at least nine Palestinians were killed earlier on Sunday in Israeli military strikes in those areas.
Residents said fierce fighting could be heard in the eastern neighbourhoods of Khan Younis where the military is operating. The new incursions have forced thousands of families to flee their homes to the overpopulated neighbourhoods of Al-Mawasi in the west and Deir Al-Balah in the north.
Later on Sunday, two separate Israeli airstrikes on Khan Younis killed at least 15 Palestinians, medics said.
New casualties in the 11th month of war
A witness said a newborn baby was among the dead in Al-Mawasi near the town of Khan Younis, where tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians have taken refuge from the war, now in its 11th month. Israeli troops have been operating in and around Khan Younis since Monday, including in the coastal neighbourhood of Al-Mawasi.
Miriam Al-Astal, who lives in Al-Mawasi, said a newborn baby was killed. She said:
“We were sitting in our tents … when suddenly we heard an explosion. I swear. There were no militants in the area.”
Israel warned on Monday that its troops would “act decisively” in the Khan Younis area, from which troops withdrew in April, and on Saturday the civil defence agency said 170 people had been killed in renewed fighting and military operations. The military said its latest operations were aimed at preventing rocket attacks.
Over the past few days, the Israeli military said the raid in eastern Khan Younis was in response to renewed attacks, including rocket fire, from the areas and to prevent Hamas from regrouping. Dozens of militants were killed in the area and military infrastructure was destroyed, the military said.
Turkey may enter Israeli territory
Meanwhile, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Turkey could enter Israel as it has done in the past in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh, although he did not specify what kind of intervention he envisaged.
Erdogan, a fierce critic of Israel’s offensive on Gaza, spoke of the war during a speech in which he praised his country’s defence industry. Erdogan told a meeting of his ruling AK Party in his hometown of Rize:
“We must be very strong so that Israel can’t do these ridiculous things to Palestine. Just like we entered Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we might do similar to them. There is no reason why we cannot do this … We must be strong so that we can take these steps.”
The AK Party officials did not return calls seeking more details about Erdogan’s comments. Israel did not immediately comment.
The president was apparently referring to Turkey’s past actions. Turkey sent the military to Libya in 2020 in support of the United Nations-recognised Government of National Accord of Libya.
Turkish Foreign Ministry compared Netanyahu to Hitler and predicted his fate as the leader of Nazi Germany. The agency said in a statement:
“Just as the genocidal Nazis were held accountable, those who seek to destroy the Palestinians will also be held accountable. Humanity will stand with the Palestinians. You will not be able to destroy the Palestinians.”
Erdogan on the conflict in Ukraine
Speaking about the conflict in Ukraine, Erdogan said that “Western warlords” had benefited from the war in Ukraine. The Turkish leader said, whose words were quoted by the Anadolu daily:
“No one has benefited from this bloodshed except the Western warlords. They are pouring oil on the fire and doing everything possible to ignite it.”
And Turkey, he said, has been working to establish peace and stability “since the first day.” He also added:
“We have prevented this fire from spreading to the Black Sea by pursuing a balanced policy and acting justly between our two neighbours.”
Earlier, Erdogan said that only a peace that satisfies both Ukraine and Russia is possible. Turkey, he assured, will continue to make every effort for this.
