I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.

It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.

Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.

I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.

Okay so, a lot of people in my server were making confused sounds about the CW's blatantly awful business decisions. And, while some are just inexplicably bad, and they're known for that, some of the cases of the Stupids can be explained, so I decided to try to scribble together a post for the media muggles to understand some corp issues.

Some of these details you guys may know, other parts will likely be new, but I'm going to try to help play connect the dots for everybody. And then you'll realize what a spiderweb we're staring at, CW business side.

So first of all: CW is barely a thing. It employs less than 400 people (literally qualifies as a small business) and is an LLC, and not publicly traded. The few wigs that do make any meaningful decisions there are essentially protected from any kind of meaningful lashback.

So, who ARE the big powers that be?

Well, most people go "THE WB", which is correct. But also, CBS, which is also correct. The WB and UPN as second tier networks folded in together and became what we know as the CW as a joint product. Now, while these companies remain amicable, what's in the best interest of one isn't always in the interest of the other.

For example--while fandom ladder climbers called me "dumb" for saying Moonves at CBS and his decision to push Charmed early, hopping months ahead on pilot filming, was a major culprit on the termination and contractual breakdown of Wayward, which WB studio was actually in on--later, the Wayward women confirmed him by name at M&G.

CBS is actually a heavier hitter powerwise than people give it credit for. Recently, Grim, the "TV reaper" spec account known for its accuracy, said "a CBS show on the CW that ISN'T the lowest-viewed on the network, OF COURSE they're doubling down." but why do CBS shows routinely get to survive lower ratings than WB shows on it?

Well, it has to do with certain slingdick agreements far beyond our peon little mortal consumer brains, basically. CBS as a parent company requires a minimum amount of CBS programs to air on CW, to bankroll CW as its child. They generally want to shit out things that they KNOW aren't worth their main channel's airwaves but will give them residual profit.

For example, Moonves himself admitted it here (article titled "how did CW's lowest rated show get renewed?") about Dynasty

“We own 100 percent of the show, and we’ve already licensed it to Netflix in 188 countries. … So this means Dynasty is profitable before it even hits the air.”

Taking a brief aside to say, that shortly after Moonves had a hand in getting Wayward last-second shitcanned, he himself was shitcanned for sexual harassment under me-too, and then summarily was replaced by another cookie cutter asshole named George Cheeks. Not super important to the thread here, but I didn't want to hear WELL AKSHULLY-

Anyway, moving forward, CW is basically an empty content delivery vessel intended to get shows to syndication value or episode count enough to be worthwhile in streaming revenue. In regards to CBS, an infamously older-skewing network ripe with AARP ads, this is where they tend to shove their shows intended for "The Youths."

They're shows they don't want "wasting" their maintime airspace, shows they know would flop on main. CBS products on CW are literally the equivalent of hiding your shit on a side blog and hoping it takes off. Charmed was geared at a young audience, so... shove it on the CW and hope it gets stream revenue! The Youths watch the CW, after all.

What I find fascinating is the treatment of this with Wanker though. CBS is in active litigation about property rights and value with Norris about the original WTR, they know it makes money and good money in that form, and yet this new, shiny reboot they let Pedowitz "bid" on? Why the FUCK did they not want it on their network?

It's not the age demo--Wanker has TERRIBLE skew for CW and, like a CBS product, skews old, not young. So??? Did they just??? EXPECT it to do awful? Give it the same default treatment as other things they're shoving out just for hopeful residuals? That's really all I can SEE.

Anyway, CBS shows need to have just about negative viewership to get shitcanned on the CW, and then are generally immediately replaced with another godawful piece of CBS garbage but slightly less awful, to then hope to get international value and residuals out of THAT piece of garbage.

What this means, though, is that WB shows tend to get the short end of the stick and are generally bullied into the margins. Everyone was SO HOT to blame Legacies at the time because it was technically the piece of paper that dropped and filled the slot, but there's only so much time in the schedule, and TVD/Originals was ending.

SPN was still airing. Pedoshits did some basic math in his head and tried to save the TVD franchise while having to guzzle down the Charmed reboot, and by then his roster was shit full of magical girl shows all of a sudden and everything else already signed so yeah, Wayward got fucked.

Not because of Legacies, not really. That was just about fated. If anything they were just gonna see if Plec made deadline. But because Moonves rushed out ahead months early to punt out a piece of shit Charmed pilot out of season to shove that shit in and head off Wayward. That was the "contractual breakdown."

But this wouldn't be exclusive to any one trade--if, for example, there was a super popular show with several leads, but only one lead was being retained on the network, but leaning out of WB and into CBS property rights--CBS' slingdick power can and would VERY EASILY take a giant shit all over WB properties, As One Does.

Leaving, of course, WB and by proxy CW both stumbling around holding a flaming bag of bullshit decisions and trying to repair an image. Or, worse, just sort of standing there like deer in the headlights thinking, if we don't say SHIT, and nobody MENTIONS the flaming bag, nobody will notice the flaming bag.

Realistically, that's not it. We all see the flaming bag of bullshit. It is literally, right there, and on fire. We're not like a T-Rex. If you don't move, we can still see you. But if they speak, or acknowledge, then accountability happens.

So let's talk about, for example, a show where someone did market testing and KNEW a pairing was popular, and basically what had held up the show for years. They're given JUST ENOUGH ROOM to like... hope they give enough??? To make the pairing people happy??? BUT NOT TOO FAR!!!

Why not if it's profitable? Well like, let's look at 15.18. To this DAY it still overshadows 15.20. And if, say, a certain character managed to come back and have a Big Gay Reunion, how much WORSE would that have 1000% overshadowed the lead transmitting over to the CBS property?

You know, the one that got very blatant mention and promo in the WB property's finale itself. Yeah, that one. The one that they spent insane amounts of money promoting afterward. With as bad as it was overshadowed even in its current form, IMAGINE. IF.

Are we getting a picture of how crossfire snipes things? Because it happens a lot, in ways people don't even compute happening behind the scenes. Of the three leads of Some Show, only one remained profitable immediately to the network, and of it, shifted in parent company association to The Even Bigger Assholes.

At that point? It doesn't really fucking matter what the WB might or might not even want. It's product is hanging up its hat and now there's these shiny new cowboy boots their child company is shoving up everybody's ass, and that's just what we've got to deal with now into whenever CBS decides CW isn't profitable enough to keep bankrolling.

I know a lot of the genshin community know that honey impact was being taken down and now is back up on another server, but I haven’t seen a lot of people that are actually taking Honey’s response seriously and not like it’s just a harmless joke:

Yeah, no. This is literally so disgusting. Fuck honey impact, seriously. If you can still defend them after this, or even laugh at it, then you better ask yourself why you’re fine with defending someone who steals shit and profits “5 digit numbers” off of it, and then proceeds to throw a tantrum with ablest and racist insults to target game devs, not even the owners who actually call the shots. Why are you yelling at people who live off of coffee and fix bugs in their code all day? I doubt they give a shit about company revenue, they’re just trying to fix stupid bugs and remember to stick in semicolons. I know that hating on big companies is all the rage these days, but Honey isn’t even talking about Mihoyo’s greed or anything; they chose to target their ability to speak English and use mental illnesses as an insult.

Honey Impact seems like the best place to find info on genshin chars rn, but here are some alternatives to use so we aren’t giving these assholes even more money:

1. Paimon.moe. This is pretty much the best alternative I’ve found so far, even beating honey in my opinion. It has a wish counter for you to keep track of your wishes past the six month mark on Genshin’s history page, a page to see characters’ ascension materials, scalings, base stats, constellations, talents, and even a quick little guide for each character. It has calculators to find how many resources you’ll need to ascend a weapon or build a character, and even for friendship farming. It has a database with materials (and what day to farm them), weapons, furnishings (including which are the special ones for which chars), and artifacts. It’s got an achievements checklist so you can keep track on what you have to do next. It also has a reminders tab to remind you about stuff like the parametric transformer or logging into Hoyolab to get the daily rewards. It has a timeline that keeps track of all the genshin events in a neat format. Also, no ads at all on this site, yoohoo! Honestly, I’m surprised I haven’t been using this earlier.

2. KeqingMains. This has base stats and scalings from level 6 onwards for each character along with their constellations and passive talents. It also has damage calculators and even lots of in depth theorycrafting guides and pages for each character. It has info on combat mechanics, artifact sets, weapons, world environment, and each enemy in the game. If you want to know all the meta about playing Genshin, here’s the site to go to. Also no ads here, so you aren’t bombarded with “i just fucked my stepmother” manga ads all the time.

3. Genshin Wiki. This has a ton of stuff, like voicelines, stories, base stats, and ascension materials for all the characters. It also has lore and scaling for all the weapons. If you want to see Artifact and book lore, it’s got that too. This is basically the go-to site for all the lore.

4. Hoyolab. Yeah, Mihoyo’s actual legal forum. They have an interactive map on the site, which actually shows a ton of useful stuff. It shows chests, oculi, world quests, NPCs, fishing spots, monsters, wood, local specialties, puzzles (sorted by what kind, too), ores, books, recipes, and even heat sources if you’re ever stuck in Dragonspine with sheer cold chasing your ass down. Along with all the puzzles, chests, and oculi are also videos on how to solve them.

5. Finally, Adblocker. If you really have to use Honeyhunter (to look at leaked chars, I guess), use adblocker. Using Adblocker makes it so the website can’t load ads and therefore owners don’t earn revenue from their ads when you’re looking at the website. So if you really have to use Honey hunter, fuck them up with adblocker. Don’t give more money to their 5 digit earnings that they’re getting by literally stealing data. The person running this site definitely makes more money than the low level employees at Mihoyo so don’t feel bad about fucking them over.

In the end, outside of leaks, Honey Impact is not that useful, nor is it particularly impressive after all. They have no content other than the shit they datamined. Everything on that website is stolen info, and now they even removed watermarks and are literally mocking the people who created all that shit in the first place. Who, by the way, aren’t the ones calling the big shots about main company policies that everyone’s upset about.

Paimon.moe made to-do lists and wish trackers, and is definitely more user-friendly. KeqingMains have better guides and people actually do contribute their own guides and stuff along with the data. Genshin Wiki is a whole database for lore, and Hoyolab has the actual interactive map.

There will always be other leakers. This entire community loves the hell out of leaks. Hell, I like leaks bc I can know ahead of time which characters are coming so my f2p ass doesn’t suffer. I used honeyhunter before all this shit happened, because I thought they genuinely liked the game and it was useful. I also didn’t know they made money off the site, which in hindsight should’ve been obvious bc of all the ads. Yeah, after this, I don’t think they’re doing this for the game or the community, it’s for the money and the clout. Hell if I’m going to contribute to the thousands they make every month after this.

What I don’t like is pretending that leakers are somehow the Robin Hoods, going around generously giving us info bc of course they have no other hidden agenda, right. Yeah, Honeyhunter made thousands off of that site and tons of internet clout, no wonder they’re trying to keep it afloat. Honey Impact won’t always be the only site that goes datamining, others are eventually going to surface and do it themselves. Hopefully those others won’t be racist, ablest, money hungry little bitches. Or Mihoyo might take another step forward and release roadmaps for the characters and render Honey Impact completely useless, who knows.

TLDR; please don’t continue to support Honey Impact. There are lots of better alternatives out there for character and weapon information that you can use. Or install adblocker. Or get your info about leaked chars’ ascension stuff through secondhand sources that repost Honey’s info, bc that way you aren’t actually accessing their site. Because going onto that website does give them money; it isn’t harmless.

Alright, this whole thing with Honey Impact is a clusterfuck, so I’m gonna make a rant (written with the help of friends) about it breaking every leg Honey Impact seems to think they can stand on. Buckle on in kids, because this is gonna be a long one.

Disclaimer: I am not a legal expert, but you do not have to be a legal expert to do some basic fucking research, which Honey Impact has clearly not done despite saying that they have.

First, it should be known that months ago Mihoyo released a statement asking people to stop supporting leaks and that they would be increasing efforts to deal with illegal disclosures of their unreleased content. This has been a long time coming, and honestly with the recent actions of leakers and/or dataminers, I think it’s deserved.

Second, unlike what many people seem to think, it is not unfair of Mihoyo to shut down Honey Impact’s site. It is within their rights. Honey Impact is sharing and profiting from content that does not belong to them. That is the bottom line of this. They do not own that content and they do not have the permission, nor the right, to share it.

Furthermore, Mihoyo did not go behind Honey Impact’s back to shut down their website. For example, if a streamer or youtube video infringes copyright, the company/corporation/individual/whatever entity holding that copyright would go to the highest power to tell the streamer or person who uploaded that youtube video that they’re infringing on that copyright, which would be Twitch and Youtube respectively. In this case, the highest power was the host domain hosting Honey Impact’s website.

Heading on to the points from the 9/11 update Honey Impact shared on their website and on their discord blatantly trying to paint Mihoyo as the bad guy and claiming that what they’re doing is in fact not illegal and pretty much digging a bigger hole for themselves:

Here is where they claim they did some legal work to try and keep their website afloat. Honestly, it seems more like they were trying to find a way to keep doing their illegal work for profit.

1)    In their first point, they claim that the Terms of Service (ToS) is not a contract. That is incorrect. It is a contract. You may not have signed with your name in blood, but you agreed to it when you checked the little box(es) to access the game because a digital signature is still your signature. If you agreed to the ToS and you violate it, you can be held accountable for doing so. What kind of legal work are you doing that you don’t even know this?

2)     In this point they say that Mihoyo provides a software that requires Kernel level of access to your PC. First of all, you have to grant Mihoyo/Genshin this permission. It is like when an app on your phone asks you for permission to access your photos, your microphone, your camera, etc. Second, the Kernel level of access to your PC isn’t to steal and sell your information, install a virus, etc., but to enforce anti-cheat measures which is common in other games.

Furthermore, it has been adjusted to be as minimally invasive as possible and if they violated any rules or laws regarding invasion of privacy or if they made it so that your computer turned into a bitcoin farm, the Google Play Store and the Apple Store and other platforms would have removed Genshin Impact from their platform. (And Mihoyo would’ve gotten into a whole lot of trouble.) What kind of developer are you that you don’t even know this?

On top of their misleading accusations, they use cookie based ads on their own site. Aka the things that save and keep track of your emails, passwords, browser history, etc, and they sell it to the highest bidder without informing you of who or what it's for or giving you a single share of the profits they're making off the private information you have stored on your device(s) while accessing their site. So who is actually being invasive?

3)     Honey Impact does give credit where credit is due with the watermarks, but they host ads on the website and they run a Patreon asking people to support them in developing their website. Which is very hypocritical of them since they themselves said that they make 10kUSD+ a month and stated that they don’t want people in their discord server to donate to them. They also beg for donations in their streams.

They are not only illegally distributing someone else’s content, they are also profiting from it. This violates the fair use clause of copyright law.

This is like people taking artists’ work and selling them behind their back. Even if the artist is making bank compared to whatever you are making, it is still theft of intellectual property. You are pretty much reposting art that the artist has said not to repost. You are a thief. What kind of content creator are you that you don’t even know this?

4)     Unlike what Honey Impact has said, everything that is under the Genshin Impact banner, be it released content or unreleased is covered under the trademark that Mihoyo owns. As the owners of that trademark, they want Honey Impact to stop using their website to illegally share unreleased content that they illegally acquired.

Honey Impact also refers to their website as a fansite. But fansites generally aren’t for profit/have ad revenue, as profiting off of someone else's content goes directly against Fair Use, which they seem to think they are somehow entitled to if they scream about it loud enough… 

Just look at the Genshin Impact fandom wiki. There is a reason why they do not allow leaked/datamined/unreleased content on their page. (Because it is illegal!!!!!!!) Also, since Honey Impact was using Fandom, the host domain of the Genshin Impact fanwiki, as an example of an entity making money off of official content: first, Fandom hosts a lot more fanwikis than just the Genshin Impact fanwiki (which, btw, has no for-profit ads), which culminates in a lot more overall traffic compared to Honey Impact’s site of stolen goods. Which means Fandom needs more money.

Second, again, the Genshin fanwiki DOES NOT POST UNRELEASED/LEAKED/DATAMINED CONTENT ON THEIR PAGES. BECAUSE DOING SO IS ILLEGAL. I don't know why Honey Impact thinks the fanwiki has that kind of content on its pages, but it doesn't.

Moreover, about not being subject to the NDA; it does not matter that Honey Impact, or anyone else on their team, did not sign an NDA. The crux of the matter is that the stuff they’re sharing doesn’t fucking belong to them. It is still theft of intellectual property.

Furthermore, this is not a grey area in law. Any company/corporation/individual/entitiy with a copyright has the right to tell other people to stop using their content protected by that copyright if they so choose. There has been precedent for this. D*sney is one such example as is Anne Rice.

As for other content creators that aren’t dataminers and/or leakers, they have been sanctioned by Mihoyo to release the content they have been releasing. Don't drag down other content creators such as streamers, artists, fanmerch creators, etc as they comply with a very much public list of conditions that Mihoyo has published to allow them to LEGALLY profit. They make fun of Mihoyo’s legal department not even being able to make a clear paragraph in English, yet Honey Impact’s English isn’t perfect either. So what if Mihoyo can’t spell? Honey Impact apparently can’t even read.

5)     What they are asking Honey Impact to do with their website is to follow the law. It is not some fraud company politics, it. Is. The. Fucking. Law. The reason they don’t want Honey Impact to have backups is because they’re not supposed to fucking have it in the first place. Furthermore, company politics has to do with what goes on inside the company, not what the company does to people/entities outside of it.

Ultimately, the stuff related to unreleased content of Genshin Impact Honey Impact has been posting on their website DOES NOT BELONG TO THEM. It’s bad enough that they were posting it without permission, it’s even worse that they were getting money for it.

Not to mention, with the way they have been acting, if you’ve been sympathetic and/or defending them, they really don’t deserve it. They added a pretty nasty disclaimer on their new website (which has since been deleted), which, by the way, can get them sued for libel, so that’s another charge on them, and also really shows how petty and childish they’re acting.

Moving on to how they claim they’re back, which at this rate won’t be for long, they say they’ve moved to an Amsterdam based server and that that server is non-DMCA compliant.

So Ionos, their former host server for their website, is, in Honey's words, "DMCA compliant" only in the sense that they take responsibility for the content posted on their platform(s) and domain(s). All that means is that Mihoyo has to go through the DMCA process with the company to officiate the start of the paperwork.

Moving to an Amsterdam server that claims to be "not DMCA compliant" doesn't mean they can't get struck by DMCA. It just means that the company disclaims any and all legal obligations regarding the content posted and it will be solely the content creator's responsibility. So all that means is that they'll get their DMCA even faster now because Mihoyo will not be legally obligated to send the paperwork to the hosting company before sending it to them.

By the way, DMCA laws are INTERNATIONAL. Just because you moved servers from the US to Amsterdam does not mean you suddenly do not have to follow DMCA laws. Also, Mihoyo does have a local EU branch to deal with such things in Europe.

Do you know if tumblr will purge fan accounts after post+ starts or will fan accounts only be at risk if they use post+? Sorry if you don’t know the answer, but I’m so confused

So, I am not entirely knowledgeable on this topic, but I will try my best to tell you what I know.

So, with post+ rolling out, it does pose many problems for fandoms as well as content creators. For example, properties like Disney and properties that are owned by Disney will be in trouble. So, if you create star wars or marvel fics or fanart and use post+ there is a strong possibility that you can be sued by this company for profiting off of their properties.

As someone who writes about BTS, I am much safer than other creators but I am still using their likeness and their image for profit if I were to use post+.

Basically what we are looking at is Tumblr trying to make their platform more ad-friendly and profitable because they are sinking. We have also noticed that post+ takes a much larger percentage of revenue than any other site such as Ko-fi or Patreon. This is clearly a cash grab for Tumblr, if it were not they would have implemented a tip jar into the site instead of creating paywalls for content.

Will Tumblr purge fan accounts with the arrival of post+? I don't think so. I think this may be a bit of mass hysteria regarding this, I do not think Tumblr would go out of their way to hunt down and eradicate fan accounts considering we produce the majority of the content on Tumblr. Will them creating post+ make many creators leave? Probably.

Tumblr has consistently made terrible choices when it comes to their users' privacy as well as infringing on what we want to post. Tumblr is the last site I would trust with my banking information if I wanted to use post+. And, on top of that, they will not protect us from any legal lawsuit that we could encounter by using post+.

Now, on that note, I plan to stay on Tumblr while I can considering this is where I started and where my readers are. My content will never be blocked behind a paywall, but I do not shame those who do. Writing and creating art is time-consuming and to be paid for creating something you love is a benefit.

On another note, I will be backing up my works on Ao3 (once I am finished being waitlisted) and putting them there just in case anything were to happen.

He’d bump into her, she wouldn’t be able to catch herself, and he’d swoop her up before she fell. She’d have to fall in love with her Prince Charming, and he’d, at last, have his princess. His y/n. Everything would be perfect.

They were destined to be together– Soulmates, Jungkook was sure, he’d known it since he’d first laid eyes on y/n. She was his true love.

You check your watch, careful not to twist your wrist enough to spill your coffee. 9:12. Finally, it looks like you’ll get to work early today! With a spring in your step, you weave through the usual crowd of hurried suits and turn the corner. You have a meeting that you’ve been preparing ages for, and you’re thinking of nothing but your various talking points, everything you’re going to present, when–

“Oof!” You bump into someone, hard, and lose your balance. Shit, shit, your hands are full. You drop your coffee and purse in an attempt to catch yourself, but instead of solid concrete, you feel the contact of strong arms holding you tightly.

“Are you alright?” You look up at your rescuer and see gorgeous dark eyes full of soft concern. The stranger helps you to your feet and hands you your purse. “That was quite a fall.”

“Ah, thank you– I’m okay. Appreciate it, man.” You breathe deeply to calm your pounding heart. The handsome stranger seems to be waiting for something. What else can you say? “Er… thanks again.” With that, you turn and begin walking to work, your pace increasing. Dammit, you really hope this won’t make you late. 

“W-Wait!” The stranger grasps at your wrist, his eyes bright, his voice revealing an emotion you can’t understand. “Do you believe in… love at first sight?”

“Uh…” Aaaand he’s crazy. You pull your arm from his grip and hurry away, flustered. Love at first sight? What fairy-tale bullshit. Sure, he’s cute, but the creepy-to-cuteness factor is way off balance in this case. Love at first sight… When you were a kid, you dreamed of being a princess and riding off into your happily ever after. But you’ve grown up since then, and you know fairy tales aren’t real.

You glance backward. He’s staring after you, and you feel a rush of guilt. He looks like a kicked puppy… or a wounded prince.

Prince? “Gah– stop it!” You scold yourself, blinking hard. The guy messed with your head, distracted you with that love-at-first-sight stuff. Whatever, you’ll forget about it soon enough. In the meantime, you’ve got your meeting to think about.

“And now I believe y/n, head of our innovation department, has the latest proposal?”

You stand. “Yes, thank you. With help from our customer surveys, we’ve noticed there are a few flaws in our current system.”

“Do you believe in… love at first sight?”

“We, uh, have devised a few options: First, we could begin requiring browser logins and game downloads for individual accounts– that will cut down on incidents such as the one that went viral last quarter. Additionally, we could consider removing ourselves from the browser-based gaming market entirely and shift to a downloaded application-type medium. We predict a decrease in traffic but profits should remain largely steady–”

“Due to ad revenue and potential membership opportunities.” You continue. “We could also consider discounted subscription packages, which seemed popular in our surveys.”

He was really cute. Maybe you were too hasty? You don’t even know his name.

“...We believe that changing the medium of the game presentation will improve security, decrease online harassment, and increase profits within the next three quarters. I will now take questions.”

Usually, creeps gave off a vibe, the type of thing you could sense right away. This guy didn’t give you that vibe.

“Very well said, y/n.” The company president clapped several times. “What software changes do you propose making for this to work?”

You beam. “It’s rather simple, we only need to move our content offline to an external database– we already have games in development using this system. The cost for the whole switch would be a fraction of potential profits.”

“Do you believe in… love at first sight?”

“The board members will give it some thought, y/n, and I’d be very optimistic. Great work.”

Yes! “Thank you.”

At the end of the day, you leave the office grinning. The meeting went really well, and if you pull off this project, you’re certain to be looking at a promotion. You’ve been working on the proposal for three months and now that it’s looking so good, you could sing.

“Y/n?”

At the summons, you turn around– and then stop dead. “You again.”

And it is the love-at-first-sight stranger from the morning. He waves awkwardly, breaking into a cute bunny-like smile. “Hi.”

You look at him with your beautiful doe eyes, the kind of eyes that a man would kill to protect. “Why were you waiting for me?”

Jungkook smiles. “I think we got off on the wrong foot earlier. I saw you dropped your card and, well… it seemed like a second chance.” A chance to be your prince, my love.

“Oh.”

“I’m Jeon Jungkook by the way.”

You smile shyly, that smile he’s seen a hundred thousand times, directed at everyone but him. You’re active on your social media accounts, and he’s seen all your photos. When you’re with your friends, your family, even today at your meeting– when you smile, you shine, a princess without a throne. It’s one of the things Jungkook loves about you. He can’t wait until your smile for him alone.

“I’m y/n. But I guess you knew that.”

“I did. Y/n, I’ll be honest, and I hope this doesn’t come off as too forward.” Jungkook leans towards you, his princess– his queen. “I’d love to get to know you better.”

“Um…” You hesitate, and a hint of fear makes its way up Jungkook’s spine. He really hopes you don’t reject him. In the months since he’s first noticed you, you’ve remained single. If you were to reject him, he couldn’t leave you to prance around in front of other men. If you, Jungkook’s princess, didn’t want his love, well… something would have to be done about that.

“Sure. That sounds cool.” You nod, a light blush coloring your cheeks. 

Something akin to joy floods Jungkook’s psyche. The first step achieved. She said yes– she must see that what they have is true love. 

Jungkook has always loved fairy tales. He was teased as a kid for how much he enjoyed princess stories. But Jungkook’s mom made it clear that she didn’t like him, and his dad was rarely around– unless he came home to berate Jungkook. No one could blame him for yearning for true love; it’s not like he ever experienced it at home. When he first saw you, he knew you were his princess. He needed to rescue you, sweep you off your feet, and carry you off into your happily ever after. True love is real, and you’ll help him prove it. The characters in Disney movies were happy after finding each other. He knows you’ll make him feel happy. In fact, he’ll make sure of it.

Oh, Jungkook knows. He’s a decent hacker. When you were out drinking with friends last month, he accessed your laptop and installed a backdoor program that lets him see whatever you’re doing on your computer. It’s been useful: he knows about your work projects; the failed first dates; your porn preferences; your email contacts. He just wanted to make sure you weren’t cheating on him. Perfect princesses don’t cheat, and he knows you’re his perfect princess.

Friday arrives. Even though it’s only been a few days since he asked you out, Jungkook has been waiting for months to finally sweep you off your feet. It’ll be amazing. He walks up to the door, the details of which he’s practically memorized, and knocks. Three grand knocks, just like he’d imagined.

“Half a moment!” Your sweet voice floats from inside the house. Jungkook presses his lips together– do you even know how beautiful, how kind, how regal you are? 

And when you swing the door open, his heart aches with desire. He can’t wait to possess you entirely. You’re wearing what Jungkook has to assume is your favorite light pink dress. You wore it to your birthday dinner four months ago, and again to your friend’s wedding three weeks ago. He hasn’t seen you wear this dress on other dates, though– does that make Jungkook special? He knew it. You do believe in love at first sight. You see the same thing he does: you’re destined to be soulmates.

“Your highness,” Jungkook says, holding out his arm.

You giggle and take his offered arm. Jungkook knows you think you’re just playing along with a joke. It’ll take a bit of time to introduce you to his royal fantasy– you don’t know you’re already Jungkook’s princess. But you will. Oh, you will.

The date goes surprisingly well. You haven’t been having good luck with dating lately, and you can actually see Jungkook being the one to break your dry spell. He’s a perfect gentleman, respectful and humorous. He continues to call you milady and your highness, and it’s cute, honestly. He makes you feel so special, almost like a princess.

“Thanks for tonight, Jungkook,” you say as he walks you to your door. “You finding my business card ended up being a pretty great coincidence.”

“I agree. I’m glad you decided to go out with me, y/n. I hope we can do this again.”

You nod. “Definitely.”

You smile as you change into your pajamas. You’re excited to see what Jeon Jungkook has in store. Before you get into bed, you open your laptop and notice a new email from the company president. Yes! Have you finally gotten the go-ahead and funding for the project you’ve poured yourself into?

Y/n, the email reads. I wish I had better news to give. The board declined your recent project proposal. Don’t let this discourage you from continuing to do great work! I’ll see you on Monday.

You sit back, slack-jawed, and rub your eyes. What? But… but it was looking so good. You worked so hard. What did you do wrong?

And this, this board. They kept his princess from achieving her goals. He blinks once, twice. Surely you’ll love him if he gets the board members to change their minds, if you realized he’d do anything for you. Jungkook turns the key in the ignition and drives home, thinking about how he can cheer you up. The individual board members are named on your company’s website– perhaps he’ll pay them a visit.

That night, you can’t sleep. This proposal was a display of your hard work, all the thought you’d put into making the company more successful. It was supposed to be a straight line to a promotion. The night started off so well, your date with Jungkook was so fun. Ugh. You bury your face in your pillow. How will you face your team members on Monday? And the board members. You know some of them don’t like you– you’re too determined, too innovative for a woman. 

How you wish you could show them.

Whatever. It’s just one more failure. You’ll start brainstorming new proposals tomorrow. 

You spend the rest of the evening tossing and turning, staring at the ceiling, and sulking. The weekend passes much in the same way. You’re not one to get discouraged, but it’s hard to feel hopeful. If the project had been approved, your responsibilities and funding would have shifted into seeing it through for at least the next year. Monday morning, you’re headed out the door when you get a text.

Jungkook: When can I see you again? [8:35]

Y/n: Want to grab dinner after work? I get off at 5. Shall we say 6:30? [8:36]

What you don’t know, Jungkook decides, wiping a bit of something red off his cheek, won’t hurt you. You wanted this project– and your knight in shining armor will ensure you get it.

“Hm? Uh, yes. Sure.” You follow the president into his office.

“How are you doing?” He asks as he settles into his chair. You sit across the desk from him. “I know how hard you worked on that project– it’s okay to be upset.”

You straighten up in your chair. “I’m fine, sir. Just focusing on moving forward.”

“That’s good. Well, I’ve actually got some surprising news for you today. Three board members– that is, the three that voted down your proposal– contacted me separately over the weekend to let me know they changed their minds.”

“I- I’m sorry, what?”

“Your proposal has been unanimously approved, y/n. Congratulations. I’m excited to see where your vision will take this company.” The president reaches across the desk and shakes your hand. You can only stare, half euphoric, half numb. “You will, of course, be transferred along with your team to the advanced development department. I’ll have the paperwork ready for you by the end of the day.”

“Okay! Uh… thank you.” You break into a radiant grin. “Thank you so much, sir!”

“Don’t thank me, the board members made their decisions. That being said, you really deserve this. Good luck.”

You practically skip out of your boss’s office. You did it! You knew the meeting went well, they just needed more time! You did it!

That evening, you hum to yourself as you put on your makeup. Jungkook will be here soon, and you’re really excited to see him. Even though you told him you could meet at the restaurant, he insisted on picking you up. What a gentleman. 

Three knocks at the door. “Coming~” you sing as you pad into the hall.

“You look beautiful, y/n,” Jungkook murmurs as you swing open the door.

“Oh stop it, charmer!” You laugh, swishing your skirt like it was a ballgown. 

“You’re in a good mood today, what happened?”

“My project got approved! The board changed their minds. Isn’t that great?”

Jungkook laughs. “That’s fantastic! Congrats!”

On impulse, you throw your arms around him and hug him tightly. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

You snuggle into his shoulder. “For being so nice. For making me feel like a princess.”

You’re so preoccupied with how good Jungkook smells that you don’t notice him tugging his jacket up to cover a red stain on his sleeve. 

“I’ll always be your prince, milady.”

oh man I feel you on the MF comparisons. I've been feeling a little off about them for a while too but could never find a good way to explain it, but 'Channel Awesome vibes' is a great way to describe it. Especially after I realized that their donation strategy is weirdly counter-intuitive and actually works against long-term donors

yes!  that nails it.  and since making that post, i had more time to think through the comparison.

(note: i am not comparing the way the employees were treated under these two companies.  i don’t know if the people working under maxfun have enough material for a 60+ page google doc detailing how they were treated badly like the ca people were.  this is strictly about the business models as well as fan relations)

(note 2: i still listen to a few maxfun podcasts and i plan on continuing to do so.)

this ended up getting really long

the first comparison i can think of is how both of these companies really try to push the narrative that they weren’t...companies, but rather just a group of friends and communities being able to do their dream job.  the behind the scenes videos for the channel awesome movies or the crossover videos between reviewers gives the audience the impression that they’re all friends who would be hanging out together regardless of their jobs.  which, if you’re deeply invested in these personalities, is very appealing.  i know many people who were around during channel awesome’s peak (myself included) who wanted to become reviewers, not for the revenue or for the creative expression, but because they wanted to be part of a group.  maxfun’s model isn’t quite the same (other than the convention i don’t think there were a lot of instances where podcast hosts would get together as a unit), but maxfun’s business model paints itself to be smaller and more grassroots than it actually is.

both companies had their flagship programs that attracted most traffic to their sites/services, while other programs don’t seem to get the same level of attention, even though one of the benefits of joining a company like this would be the exposure.  this is just a minor observation, but looking through the catalogue of mf shows reminds me of looking through the catalogue at tgwtg.com.  it’s like there are so many programs...and i don’t hear people talking about 90% of them.  also the ads for the podcasts give me the same energy as the cameos channel awesome reviewers would make in each other’s reviews.

this is the most striking comparison to me, and it’s the business model.  channel awesome (or specifically tgwtg) was created because it provided a safety net to online reviewers who were worried about getting copyright strikes on youtube.  you could post to blip on its own, but no one would see it.  by partnering with tgwtg, you were increasing your chances of being able to profit off of your videos while also getting more of an audience (of course even then it still comes down to luck).  there were competing sites (who here remembers reviewtopia?), but those fizzled and died quickly.  it was very transparent that everyone who partnered with those competing sites were just trying to get noticed by tgwtg (some have even said outright).

but that model didn’t last forever.  when youtube became less (key word: less, it still sucks) trigger happy with the copyright strikes and allowed more long-form content, more reviewers navigated there.  when blip shut down in 2015(?), they were pretty much forced to anyway.  and unlike blip, youtube makes it easier to gather and maintain an audience.  and then patreon started to take off too.  so, since reviewers were now able to sustain an audience independent of channel awesome and have more control over their revenue, there was a mass exodus from the main site (of course, the issues outlined in the document certainly helped with that).

the maxfun donation model gives me the same vibe.  a lot of non-maxfun podcasts use patreon.  this gives listeners the benefits of being able to directly support the creators (iirc the cut patreon takes is much smaller than the cut mf takes) as well as providing them with monthly/weekly bonus content: episodes with no ads, behind the scenes, q&as, etc.  when i started supporting more podcasts on patreon, i was kinda overwhelmed by the amount of content there was.

but the donation model is so weird to me.  first, it’s more of a subscription fee than a donation, but that wouldn’t really work with the chill vibe they’re probably going for.  and unlike patreon bonus content, the bonus donor content is given out annually, not weekly/monthly.  just doesn’t feel like a good investment (even though i’ve done it whoops)

also you don’t get bonus content for the shows you like, you’re getting content for the whole company.  i am a donor and you have to scroll through everyone’s bonus content to get the one or two episodes you actually donated for.  and they’re usually just normal episodes?  you could be paying up to $200 a month (yes that is a tier) and still have to listen to ads on the episodes.

this is where my comparison to channel awesome comes from, because this feels oddly outdated because it feels like no one else in the medium does this.  i can’t imagine a system like tgwtg operating in 2021 the same way it did in 2010.

if it’s not obvious, i only have a casual observer’s perspective of mf’s business model.  this was just an excuse for me to ramble about tgwtg and channel awesome, because i wasted my teen years on that site and i need someone to listen.
