Famous Five Art Nostalgia #05 – Part 2

Part 1

Five Go Off in a Caravan – Le Club des Cinq et les saltimbanques

Original publication date: 1946 (UK), 1965 (France)

The Famous Five are holidaying at the family house of Julian, Dick and Anne. They befriend an orphaned circus boy, Nobby, who is in a procession of horse-drawn circus caravans. This inspires George to suggest a caravanning holiday. Julian's parents assent and hire two caravans for the children.

You will find that the plot summary is a little more detailed than what I originally wrote for Part 1, as I needed more context to fit all the illustrations that I wanted to include. I also updated Part 1 with the newer, more detailed text -- use the link above if you want to go and have a look!

(Dick watches the horses enjoying a refreshing halt on their way to the camping place)

The Five travel to Merran Lake, where they are reacquainted with Nobby and meet various animals. The Five camp on a hillside, much to the annoyance of Nobby's guardian, Tiger Dan, and an acrobat named Lou, who want them to leave.

The Five and Nobby agree to a signalling system whereby Nobby can let the Five know when the coast is clear (i.e. when Tiger Dan and Lou are away) and that they can come down to the circus or to a nearby lake where they all have fun together.

(The Five hike from their camping place down to the lake, while poor Timmy is left behind to watch over the caravans)

Tiger Dan and Lou keep prowling around the children’s caravan, much to their annoyance. Suspecting foul play, they have their own look-around but find nothing. Ultimately they devise a plan in which the Five make it seem like they’re all going shopping to a nearby village, whereas Julian doubles back covertly to see what Tiger Dan and Lou are plotting.

Julian discovers that one of the caravans is directly above the entrance to an underground passage, from which Tiger Dan and Lou emerge with two sacks of presumably stolen valuables.

On the next day, Julian, Anne, George and Timmy go to the next town to buy torches in order to explore the tunnels, while Dick, Nobby and Pongo are left behind to guard the caravans. Unfortunately, Tiger Dan and Lou come back, determined to bully their way in, but the boys and Pongo (mostly Pongo) manage to fend them off.

(As a reward for his feat, George gives Pongo an old torchlight to play with – the chimp is delighted!)

The children explore the tunnel and follow it to a cache of stolen items and jewelry. But on their way back, they find that the entrance has been closed up with planks! They try to find another way out, following an underground stream, with no luck. At night, the villains come back to pick up their loot. Dick manages to sneak out and goes to a nearby farm to call the police.

After the villains are arrested, Nobby leaves the circus to live with a local farming couple and look after their horses, which was his dream job.

The hardest part of asking commissions for this ship is having to download images of Clay in my phone to send for reference.

Just after Zenoheld, I think Clay is one of the ugliest mfs in the show. It pains me to see him in my gallery. I have a hard time even looking at the character without cringing.

You may wonder, "Okay, if you think he's so ugly, why do you ship him with Hydron?" and the answer is I DON'T KNOW. The brainrot just happened, I suddenly found myself liking Clay as a (toxic) partner for Hydron and I said "Yeah baby, let the emotional dependency and horrible sex begin." It just happened! I never chose this. But now that I'm here, I'm going full-on, I'm going with everything even if I feel like throwing myself out of the window every time I see screenshots of Clay bc he's so fucking ugly and my eyes burn at the sight of him. I started this crazy ride and I'll take it to the very end, either the end of the brainrot or the end of myself, but I'm here 'till the end and I ain't stopping until either I die or the brainrot dies on its own.

This ship and I are ride or die, and, as the only shipper, I'm riding this ship, I'm taking it far and I ain't stopping.

And until the day I stop, I'll have to have images of Clay in my phone even if they're an eyesore. Someone tell Clay to fucking shave or something, idk how his face can be fixed so it is less ugly. But, either way, the artists I commission do manage to make Clay less ugly, so I guess that compensates for the hell that it is to google Clay and download images of him.

Thank God there's something good coming out of this.

Hello, pile 3! Your inner child's energy is like a fire-cracker. They have a very spicy energy but it feels very tame. An outside force (probably a mother or another feminine role model) definitely shoved them in a box early on. Your spicy energy goes unappreciated by you because of how some of your inner child has been hidden away. Two things I think would be important for you to know about this. First, you are free of this third party who judged you. You don’t have them hanging over your shoulder anymore. You are free to let your inner child be themselves. Second thing, your inner child’s aggression is a very useful and protective tool. Let them get angry. Let them bark at people. Not allowing that energy out is less protective than relaxing and permitting them to protect you from people or things that you know hurt you. I know you’re scared to empower them.
