mine.

the concept of 'mine' was one that never truly existed in the younger years of a middle sibling who grew up too fast for the others. between trying desperately to become the model child of his parents and trying to learn of the world through the eyes of a young boy who should have been protected instead- somehow maddox kang found himself losing his way.

'be greedy.'

rings in his head. a demand the (now) young man doesn't quite know how to tackle these days. or maybe he never knew.

greedy. a concept so foreign- what did it mean to be greedy?

greedy. a word thrown around so easily for some. a word with meanings attached- connotations that never seemed... good. fit for a middle-classed poster child.

'be selfish.'

selfish. like his older brother, who couldn't uphold the name of the kangs? who abandoned all hope their father had, in pursuit of something so... useless?

selfish. like the virtues of his younger sister, willing to stir the pot and wait for maddox himself to clean up the mess? who couldn't even fathom the idea of being alone, even into adulthood?

maddox finds that he couldn't be either.

until he found himself standing in front of a boy, brazen and imposing. fierce- and intimidating in the fashion that this boy carried himself. bold. and although maddox would have never guessed from the start- soft-hearted and more loving than he'd ever let on or admit (perhaps).

heart thudding, cheeks rosy, and it's not as instantaneous as perhaps others would have hoped.

but maddox finds himself yearning. yearning to know. yearning to reach his hand out- to feel what it was like; to taste. yearning like someone lost looking to find their way- even if he didn't know it yet. wouldn't know it until on the cusp of losing everything he'd been yearning for.

and the yearning gradually turns into greed.

greed for more, to know more- feel more. experience more-- take more. all for maddox himself.

and maybe greed was meant to eventually turn into avarice.

maybe 'mine' wouldn't be so foreign for much longer. in fact--

'mine' sounded better on this boy than it ever did before.

'all fucking mine.' never sounded more attractive.

first snow.

“c’mon, I don’t wanna miss this.” the gentle but excited voice of a young man cuts through the otherwise peaceful, chilly winter air. it’s dark. and a little too late for any sane person to be out for the reasons that maddox kang was out of the warmth of his bed.

under the dark sky, little cold flakes of snow fell in a gentle flurry, dotting the darkness with the pure and the pristine. it’s the first snow of the year. winter has begun, and undoubtedly, maddox’s eyes sparkled in awe.

standing in the quiet street, the young man wore a coffee colored knit sweater under his black coat and some pair of pants hastily thrown on. his hair, still wild and unkempt from a wash earlier, curl in unpredictable patterns.

soft snow almost immediately begins to dot the dark strands, falling impartially into maddox’s hair.

but he doesn’t seem to mind. not even when the soft glow of the street lamp illuminates his delicate features.

or maybe he doesn’t notice.

not when he tugs a slightly taller boy closer to his side and interlaces his fingers behind the other boy’s back. keeping him trapped in maddox’s embrace.

“isn’t it so pretty?” he asks, his cheeks and the tip of his nose tinged in pink (from the chills or something else, it’s difficult to tell).

but maddox is no longer looking at the falling snow. his eyes stay trained to the pretty features of the other boy in his arms, instead.

and maybe he’s no longer referring to the snow too.

late night strolls with ivan under the bright street lamps and on the lonely sidewalk. chatting quietly about anything and everything under the stars, until the mind is content with all that it’s shared, as warm street snacks fuel the heart and soul.

quiet cafe meetups with vivian where the smell of coffee and sweets waft through the air and the only noise to fill the otherwise silent void is the cafe ambience. hours breeze by easy as the sun begins to set across the horizon. it’s not time to leave yet, though. there are too many unspoken thoughts to convey, now.

escaping the mundane and experiencing the thrill of car meets with jace. with the distinct roaring of heavily modded engines and the distant ear-piercing screeching of brakes being slammed far too roughly. it’s wild. it’s chaotic. and it’s fleeting. just the way it’s always meant to be, as a warm palm and confident fingers gently tug in the direction of the makeshift finish line. the racers are about to start.

watching maddox out on the rink, with his team jacket draped warmly across shoulders and formerly goosebump ridden skin. the lights are almost too bright and it doesn’t matter how warm the weather is beyond the walls of this indoor recreational area; the air within is always chilly and crisp. the sound of blades skidding across the ice bring the attention back to the center of the stadium. bright eyes that reflect the luminance of the LEDs stare back, a grin present in those dark swirling orbs.

stargazing with nova in the middle of nowhere, laying in the cold, slightly damp grass until it’s started prickling against skin. every once in a while, her bright voice breaks the silence in giddy, energetic bouts at a particularly twinkling cluster. a sharp nudge and a yell of wonder, when a meteor happens to fly across the dark night sky. it’s like a portal to another universe, just like stargazing itself is a portal into hers.
