      There’s defiance in every motion as he yanked on his coat, expression stern and unrelenting as he shot her a critical look. Hell, he even made a show of plucking up his pistol and snapping ammo into place before holstering it with a deft motion. When it was concealed properly, the lieutenant finally turned and made direct eye contact – arms folding over his chest. As authoritative as he could muster even as his put upon persona cracked and the faintest glimmer of humour shone in his eyes.

      “ Now. If we’re done trying to play the fucking hero – lead the way. The sooner we find these assholes, the sooner we can call it a long weekend. And I, for one, am ready to spend that entire weekend sleeping. Let’s go. ”

      It was the calm before the storm in that moment - the precinct fading into the background as white noise. Shifting his weight from foot to foot, Hank tried to flash as reassuring a smile as he could. But even he knew it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Knew the tension could be seen on every angle of his person. It was a shit job but someone had to do it. He didn’t want to dwell on the fact he had been labeled internally as expendable no matter how Fowler tried to placate him. 

      A hand rose hesitantly before landing on the Android’s shoulder and squeezing firmly. “ You and I both know you can’t go. You’ve got a gleaming target on your back and your damn temple. One look at you and they’d try to dissemble you and sell you on the black market, ” he murmured, voice low and tired eyes soft. A rare show of emotion for the lieutenant and a necessary one at that., “ These assholes need to be taken down before they hurt anymore humans or androids, and if that means walking into the lion’s den? Then I’m gonna do it. And you’ll be not far behind with the rest of the team when I give the signal. ” 

      Lingering a moment before giving Connor a firm pat, Hank finally pulled back to adjust his ridiculous ‘disguise’. This time he did manage a wry, genuine smile, “ Besides … I’m your senior officer or whatever. I did this kind of crap long before you came along – have some faith in me, will you? ”

      A quiet huff of strained laughter left him, head shaking as he stared hard at the ground. He could feel his goddamn blood pressure rising with each passing moment and frankly? He could tear his own hair out at this rate. In all his years Hank had never met anyone as stubborn as an Android – and that was saying something coming from him. 

      “ No, Connor. Your job is to outshine us human workers and prove our incompetency as well as render us obsolete to the corporate shareholders, ” he couldn’t stop the biting words as he raised the burger to his mouth and ripped a piece out of it. It was far from dignified but his testy mood stopped him from caring. “ Look – I don’t need nannying like I’m about to expire any goddamn moment. I’ve been doing this job for twenty odd years and I’m still standing strong in spite of what you might hear. This is my work. This is what I do. And I don’t need you or anyone else to take care of me. ” 

       With a grimace, the lieutenant grabbed the rest of his meal and dumped it with a snort. “ I’m not hungry anymore. If it’s all the same? I’m gonna walk back to the Precinct and you can take the car. ”

      “ Well shit. Some asshole decided to be a decent person and check on me while I was in a pretty lousy state. Rather than using the front door like a normal person would he decided to use the fuckin’ window to get in. Punched the thing out… ” 

      A pause. And then Hank was smiling - a soft expression rarely found on someone like him. “ I should probably be more pissed about it than I am… Just – I dunno. It’s not something I can be completely mad about considering he did it because he was worried about me… It’s been a long time since anyone’s given a shit about me. Even longer to that degree. ”

      “ – shit. ” 

      Brows pinching together, Hank took far longer than he intended to answer the question. His chest felt heavy and tight, hands curling to fists at his side as he drew in a shaky breath. Instinctively without thought he wanted to say yes. But he knew it wasn’t fucking true. That he’d regret the answer the moment it left his mouth. He’d never be able to forgive himself either for stooping to such a goddamn low too. 

      “ At one time I might’ve said yeah without a second thought. Cole is – was – everything to me. He’d been my goddamn world for so long, ” he began quietly, tucking his arms tightly over his chest as he looked down and away. Miserable. “ … but … no. I don’t think I would. Connor doesn’t deserve that. Connor deserves so fucking much – and I know Cole. If he knew I’d done something like that? He’d never forgive me. He was a caring young boy, you know. Thought the world of others – even androids. He’d tell me he made friends with them at the park sometimes. I never thought anything of it, just a kid being naive. But knowing what I know now? He probably did make friends. ” 

      A pause and a soft, strained wavering smile. “ And I know he would’ve made friends with Connor. Would’ve loved him, in fact. I know he would’ve hated the idea of hurting someone else to save himself. So… no. No I wouldn’t. They both deserve better than my selfish kneejerk reaction. ”

      “ … I – ”  

      His throat felt like it was closing up as a surge of emotions washed over him. Anger. Longing. Despair. All a fucked up cocktail that knocked the air right out of him. His shoulders tensed and his jaw clenched, eyes slipping shut as he tried to reign it in. The thought of just seeing Cole again was overwhelming and painful in equal measures. He could barely keep himself standing the more he thought about it. It was too much. But it wouldn’t be enough – 

      “ – i-if I could, I’d take it. I … wouldn’t say anything. I don’t think I could, ” his voice was strained as he finally opened his eyes, tears brimming the edges as he drew in a sharp breath. “ I’m not a strong enough man to deny myself the chance to see him. It’d be easier if I could. I just… I’d just want to hold him for that miserable minute. Just to be able to remember what it feels like. Having that weight in my arms and to hear his muffled bitching about affection – ” 

      He trailed off with a choked laugh, a hand clapping over his eyes as he tilted his head backward. Trying to stave off the tears as long as he could. “ I’d give anything to hold my son one more time. ”

      “ Weirdest, huh. ” Scratching at his beard lightly, Hank rolled his eyes skyward as he sifted through moments. Plenty of trash and knick knacks… ah. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he finally looked back with a huff of laughter. 

      “ I wouldn’t call it weird – probably some shit like serendipitous. But back when Sumo was a younger pup he had a habit of grabbing things and bringing them back to me on walks. Sometimes nasty shit like squirrels. One time a wallet. But one time the bright bastard brought me a crumpled bag of red ice. You know – back when I was investigating full time. ” 

      He looked downright amused as he recalled it. “ Of course I get him to show me from where – after a lot of effort and patience. Turns out? The genius found not only a distributor’s hide out in some rich asshole’s house – but it was one of Detroit’s number one most wanted drug peddlers. Gave him two big steaks that night for cracking open a two year long case I’d been on. ”

      It took Hank a moment to register the approaching footsteps, head lifting up with a jerk when Sumo let out an excited boof and went bounding. Before he could really raise his voice to call the dog back, the lieutenant felt himself sobering up very fast. There was something about young Zoe’s expression that felt like a haunting reflection, Hank’s body stiffening up a bit as he leaned forward. He watched as the large St. Bernard attempted to lean his entire weight into her, waving off the quiet dejected words with a shake of his head. 

      “ Pfft. You know damn well you’re always welcome here. Who else would Sumo slobber on in his excitement? The novelty of ruining my pants wore off years ago for him, ” came the gruff voice as he took a final swig from his bottle, placing it on the porch next to where he perched on the ledge. Arms folding over his lap, Hank leaned forward as casually as he could as he looked her over - subtly trying to pin point if the reason behind that expression were physical - before patting the faded wood next to him with a dull slap. 

      “ Pop a squat, kiddo. I don’t have anything to drink besides water at the moment, ” he began, words stilted as he tried to force a slight smile. Even as his chest bundled up tighter with a sense of protective worry. “ But if you need it, it’s there. Could also order some greasy pizza… No offense. You look like you might need it. It is the best comfort food out there. ”

      His throat felt tight and his body tense as he stared the other down. It was dangerous being out here in the open - dangerous even talking to someone like him. But . . . They’d somehow always managed to be in the right places at the right time to help each other. Didn’t matter how opposite they were. Practically from two different worlds and constantly in one chaotic orbit, colliding over and over. There had to be a breaking point. 

      “ You know I can’t. Shit. I’d be leaving everything -- ” he croaked out, arms tight and jaw clenched as he stared at him. Why’d he have to go and say it like that? Like it was a miserable goodbye that shouldn’t make him feel like he was ready to puke. It didn’t make sense. None of it made sense. If he wanted to be sane he’d stand his ground. But as he watched the other, he could feel his resolve crumbling. 

    And then Sumo had to go and make everything worse by trotting right over to Higgs’ side with a low whine. 

      “ Aw -- for fuck’s sake, Sumo. You’re making this shit show a lot worse than it already is! ” he spat out, grimacing as the large lummox pointedly looked at him. Remained unrelentingly at Higgs’ side. Traitor. Gritting his teeth, Hank turned his head skyward and drew in a sharp and miserable breath. Fuck it. 

                                           “ . . . I’m comin’, I’m comin’. Jesus goddamn Christ. ”

Hank grit his teeth as he remained crouched right next to the young woman, brows pinched tight together as he gently nudged his folded jacket under her head. He could hear in the distance the faint sound of sirens – too far off to the close for comfort. They needed to hurry their ass up. Shit. Others were hurt too but Hank couldn’t handle more than one person at a time. Not while a damn near riot was breaking out. 

      Pressing his hands firmly to the wound at her side, Hank turned his surprisingly clear gaze up to meet hers. “ Shit, I know kid. I know. Gotta hurt like a bitch, ” he grit the words as he tuned out the chaos unfolding around them. One thing at a time, Anderson. One goddamn thing at a time. The androids and people responsible for this shit show would be caught. He’d make sure of it. “ Bullet wounds are the worst you get. But you got the look of a fighter. So I need you to keep both eyes open, keep breathing, and keep watching me alright? Help will be here soon and we’re gonna make sure you’re bright eyed and fuckin’ bushy tailed when they get here. You hear me? Stay with me, kid. ”
