"Just Above Midtown—or JAM—was an art gallery and self-described laboratory led by Linda Goode Bryant that foregrounded African American artists and artists of color. Open from 1974 until 1986, it was a place where #Blackart flourished and debate was cultivated. The gallery offered early opportunities for artists now recognized as pivotal figures in late-20th-century art, including David Hammons, Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Senga Nengudi, Lorraine O’Grady, and Howardena Pindell. Nengudi has described JAM’s energy as 'vibrating,' a space where artists 'were given carte blanche, and there were no restrictions.' This exhibition presents artists and artworks previously shown at JAM in a wide range of mediums, and archival material and artist interventions contextualize the experimental ethos that defined the gallery.

Animated by Goode Bryant’s belief in trying to 'connect us to our innate ability to use what we have to create what we need,' the gallery took what was an expansive view at the time, embracing artists working with abstraction and inexpensive materials, video and performance, as well as self-taught and West Coast artists. It organized exhibitions that explored the idea of artistic and racial mixture, encouraged collaborations between artists, and, with a steady drumbeat, offered a platform for consistent critiques of the commercialization of art. As part of their mission to build relationships with the city’s art audiences, Goode Bryant and her collaborators incorporated talks and workshops into the gallery’s programming, including The Business of Being an Artist—aimed at artists’ professional development—and Brunch with JAM, a $5 lunch series featuring lectures by artists and museum curators.

Knights of Nodd:

Knights of Nodd is a fantasy setting where a Trickster God, Yami, wanted to try his hand at creating a reality away from the prying eyes of his sibling Gods and their rules. Built from the dreams, stories, legends , and scraps of imagination from as many different worlds as Yami could find, Nodd is a planet populated by a host of sapient peoples and interesting beasts. There’s at least one other planet in the same solar system with sapient life, too. This is a world building project that I’ve been tinkering with on and off for 15+ years, so I’m hoping this blog will help me share it. Knights of Nodd is inspired by Music and my time spent in the Furry fandom.

H.A.L.O.S.:

H.A.L.O.S. is a Sci-fi setting that’s a spin-off of the concepts, aesthetics, and characters explored in Knights of Nodd. It’s not yet well super well developed, so it’s hard to summarize. Furries and digital Gods in space is reductive, but not incorrect. H.A.L.O.S. is inspired by my childhood of being charmed by, but not really understanding, Sci-Fi concepts and my now desire to better understand and appreciate the genre.

Artifacts:

Artifacts is a contemporary setting based on our world, with an event happening about 50 years ago that loosed Super Heroes into the world via powerful devices called Artifacts. Each Artifact will only work for one living person at a time, and can look like almost anything. No one is sure how the artifacts “pick” the person they work for. Artifacts was inspired by “outsider comic media” [My Hero Academia, Invincible, Forging Hephaestus, Super Crooks] and wondering “What would a world where comic book Super Heroes looked like real humans be like?”

Good Fortune:

Good Fortune is a fantasy setting where the sea is the center of the world, both figuratively and literally. Topknot, a Wood Elf, has to forge a path to make her way in a world she was raised to fear. After escaping the controlling, cult-like culture of her homeland Topknot sets out, making friends with a merry band of misfits along the way. Together her newfound companions, including a Mage who makes a hobby of getting struck by lightning, a half-Elf weapons Smith and his apprentice, a Vampire Prince, and a crotchety, talking cat, teach her about their world. Topknot soon realizes that not everything she was told about the evils of the outside world was a lie, and there are injustices to right. With her new friends at her side, she has to figure out how to help the world realize the trouble its in and stop The Navy from taking over the world. Good Fortune is my oldest and most beloved project but I don’t share much about it online because I want to get some of it published. When I have art to share though, it’ll go on this blog as well. Good Fortune is inspired by my many years of playing various TTRPGs, stories of found family, and my deep and abiding love of the fantasy genre.
