At work, someone mentioned that they don't like their dog, and I said Wow, have you tried training it? Socialising it? (This is most people's pet problems.)

And he said, well it is completely trained, he's just used to outside dogs, but this dog is an inside dog since they've been living in a place with no yard. And his wife doesn't like the dog either because it will seek attention from her instead of going to lay in a corner all day.

Me, thinking all this is very, very strange - both of them not liking their own dog and also getting a dog in the first place if they were determined not to like it - suggested that maybe the kids could take care of it.

But the "problem" is evidently that the wife is at home alone, with the dog, most of the day, and never grew up with dogs, and just can't stand it.

I think this guy expected me to express some kind of sympathy, but, of course, I had none except for the dog.

And I just. If you get an animal, you make your bed and you LIE in it. "Not growing up" with dogs isn't an excuse to hate your pet and deny it attention. Grow up. This is a creature who is perfectly trained, sounds like a dream animal for anyone, thinks the world of you, and you just can't be bothered to even like it? Spend time with it???

This guy and his wife are losers. They need to get over themselves and figure out how to love their pet.

Heard from some other guy who failed to train his pet properly and was "scared for his kids."

These are a YOU problem, NOT an animal problem. Train your pet. Love your pet. It's not like it's hard; it's easy. If you're giving your pet a shit life or giving the pet up because you won't bother to put the time and energy into it, then you suck at life and shouldn't have gotten one in the first place.

about Obscurials and pre-Hogwarts Harry

this is your daily reminder that Harry could never have been an Obscurial, not because That Woman hadn’t created/retconned in the idea yet, but because of the actual definition, which is “a child who knows about their magic and tries to suppress it”.

Ariana Dumbledore knew she was a witch from the time she was able to know things. She was actively and knowingly doing magic when she was attacked, and afterward she refused to use her gift and it turned inward.

Harry Potter knew that strange things happened around him, but he did not know that it was magic, because he didn’t think magic was even real. One of the first things he says to Hagrid after The Reveal is something along the lines of “this has to be a mistake, I can’t be a wizard”. He also wasn’t trying to “suppress” any of the things happening to him, because he didn’t know he was the one causing them to happen.

so yeah, there’s no viable “Dumbledore knew Harry could have become an Obscurial when he left him with the Dursleys and still left him there” argument, because Dumbledore didn’t know the Dursleys weren’t going to tell Harry about his magic or even treat him like a member of the family (see: my 12-hour long post about this shit last month, along with The Books).

Given that my dog is slowing down, I keep thinking about maybe getting a younger pup. Especially now that the snow is melting and hiking season is just on the horizon, I’m really not looking forward to having to hike by myself. I tell my husband this and he says “I’ll go hiking with you!” but we both know he doesn’t actually want to go hiking as often as I do, and I hate to nag. I also know I’m gonna need more emotional support than I’ve currently got when my dog passes. It could be next winter, it could be in a couple years, but she’s 13 years old.

But also, I live in a little apartment, and I already am overwhelmed with all the stuff I have to deal with. Having 2 dogs, even if one is old and well trained and basically perfect for me except for the old part, would likely be too much.
