living together ~ monkey trio
{macaque, sun wukong, & mk x fem!reader}
++============++
Macaque
macaque started living at your place after the defeat of LBD and it was a weird adjustment for him
he’s not the type for a more domestic life but he loved you and didn’t want to leave you alone all the time
you were happy to have him there but you could tell he was struggling with the adjustment
mostly all the sounds, it irritated his ears
you do live in the city after all and you’re used to the sounds.
to help you got him a pair of noise-canceling headphones
you rarely see macaque without them which you don’t mind
the two of you exchanged small notes to each other
macaque finds it cute especially when you drawing things on the notes
you got blue and purple sticky notes for this
you like things that are color coded, it was one the charms that macaque liked about you
the first couple of days you spent together, macaque won’t sleep in the same bed with you
not that you minded, you loved macaque and respected his space since he’s rarely touchy with you mostly bc he’s not much of fan but also abandonment issues
but one night, you felt him slip into the bed from behind you, his arms wrapped around your waist, his face buried in your neck and his tail was curled around one of your ankles.
he likes your warmth and after that night, he’s gotten clingy with you
clingy to the point where he’s protective, like very protective
you’ve heard him hiss at people before
you started to think that your monkey boyfriend was half-cat
he loves your touch, you’ve heard him purr sometimes when you pet him when the two of you chill on the couch
you love have your emo monkey boyfriend in your home
Sun Wukong
after a lot begging from wukong, you finally gave in and moved in with him on Flower Fruit Mountain
he was a happy monkie and hugged you as soon as you showed up
“Peaches! You made it!”
“Hi, Wukong.”
wukong’s little monkeys were just as happy to see you as your monkey boyfriend
They took turns hugging you 😭
though you had your gripes with living on Flower Fruit Mountain, you found that it was quite peaceful living far away from the crowd city
wukong knew the stress you’ve experienced while living there so he thought if you lived with him you’d be able to get a sense of peace
you really took on a housewife persona which wukong was surprised by
he wanted to you to relax and let him do everything
yet you said otherwise
you like the idea taking care of household stuff also you want to make this monkey your husband
wukong didn’t stop you from doing what you wanted
when you cook, he’d stand behind you with his arms around your waist, his chin resting on your shoulder as his tail wagged behind him
“Thanks for everything, Peaches.”
he’s very flirty and rolls out compliments every so often and you don’t mind, they sometimes make you flustered but you’re so used to wukong’s antics they don’t effect you as much so you flirt back sometimes
It catches him off guard sometimes
sleeping in the same bed was easy for the two of you with you liking to cuddle and wukong being clingy
“I love you, sunshine”
“I love you too, monkey face.”
MK
you and mk have talked about who would move into who’s place
But neither of you could come to an agreement on it
Look you wanted to live with mk yet his apartment seemed too small for the two you yet you lived on the other side of the city, yet your apartment was bigger than mk’s it was a bit inconvenient
After days of rating the pros and cons, the two of you settled on you moving in with mk
pigsy and mk helped you move most of your stuff to mk’s apartment (mostly clothes and other things like that) and your hamster
mk was happy to have you with him
He likes seeing you after a long day, sometimes he even forgets that you live there
an exhausted mk would sometimes stumble through the door, seeing you either on the couch or sitting on the bed in the bedroom, he’d flop down in your lap and rant about his day while you listened as you ran your fingers through his hair
you cook most of the time
you’ve been teaching him how to cook, yes he has blown up the kitchen before
mk did get embarrassed when said you’d like to sleep in the same bad as him
mk.exe has stopped working
you laughed at his reaction, and told him that he didn’t have to agree with it if he didn’t want to
he shook his head rapidly and said he doesn’t mind
he was really tense next to you until the both of you fell asleep and woke up almost on top of each other
you moving in with him was the best thing that happened to mk

triggers: death, adoption, mental illness
felicity was born to a single mother. she was never planned and was indeed a strain on the household. her mother hid her pregnancy with her until she went into labor and told her parents. it was a disaster and continued to be when fliss was born. none of it was her fault but her mother was already suffering from mental illness, something that wasn’t helped by the judgemental people around her. then suddenly, the woman was gone in an accident - felicity's own family didn't want her. she would scream for her mother, for anyone but they wouldn't come.
at the age of five, she was adopted by the daughter of edward allen, a known billionaire and they both lived in the united states of america. money prevailed in getting ms. allen what she wanted, a child when she was a single and vile person that would say and do anything to get one. when unable to conceive herself, she looked towards adoption and the process was much quicker taking a five year old, plus, she skipped out baby night feeding so it was of no concern to her.
it took her a while to get settled but with edward’s help, fliss managed. she always felt a bit out of place with her peers; she didn’t catch onto jokes that fast nor did she necessarily care about designer things or status. she was labelled as odd and that’s how it stayed. she loved singing, mainly to herself and also writing music, composing. that was her happy place along with being with people - even if they didn’t understand her, she still found the positives to enjoy it. her grandfather was very supportive with whatever she wanted but she never once asked for anything apart from ‘dinners and dance parties’. in the absence of her mother's caring, edward was the one to make her feel like she was exactly where she needed to be, even be quick to put her into therapy, not because she was broken but because she needed that external support where she could be honest. felicity was always grateful, always reminded that she got lucky with the life by her mother and edward took that pressure off. the whole world probably had some opinion on the billionaire but he was perfect to her.
when she was in her teen years, she worked as a model for her mother’s cosmetic company. without realising it, felicity was responsible for her mother’s success because it made the woman branch out into new foundation shades - it wasn’t perfect but it was a step in the right direction and her mother was applauded whilst felicity became the face of the entire company - not just the face but the name of felicity cosmetics. you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing her face. it did cause controversy with her being young but it got people talking.
it was a lot of pressure to put on her but she was agreeable in nature and never wanted to upset her mother so never said anything. she fell into her music as a way to process emotions and things she cared about - had been dubbed a bit of a prodigy but was never really good at school. through connections, she did manage to get a place at julliard but she’d crumble and pull out only a few months in. it was mainly sitting in her bedroom with her laptop and equipment, headphones on being in a completely different world while she wrote and mixed tracks and that was and continues to be her happy place.
the news that her grandfather was ill and he wasn’t going to get better hit fliss the hardest. he was the one person who she felt understood her, the one that tied her to a lot of things and made her feel loved. impulsive and intense behaviour came from her during this time, that was in her second month at julliard. living in denial was a hard place to be as her mental health deteriorated quickly - fliss' mother wasn’t the talkative type and every time she tried to accept reality and try to talk about her feelings with the woman, she’d be shut down and thrown into a schedule. she’d dropped out and hadn’t told her mother - being dishonest was not her thing...
she had a breakdown at a photoshoot. the photographer was quick to intervene and attempted to comfort her until they could get her somewhere safe. a day after, she was hospitalised but her mother wanted to get her out quickly. it was upsetting when edward died and she has yet to accept that he’s gone. it was just her and her mother and although she felt broken, she needed to be there to comfort her mom because she could see that the woman was struggling - it was hindering them both that she still didn’t want to talk about it.
the reading of edward allen’s will was a big event. fliss wasn’t expecting to get anything as he’d given her more than enough love to make up for the lack in her life. it was a great surprise to everyone, including her, when edward left everything to her. overwhelmed didn’t even cover it. his savings, current bank account, shares in his company, property... everything. she was so confused as to why and did feel sorry for her mother but she didn’t even have time to think about what she wanted to do with the billions (tabloids will say millions which is half-true because they underestimate the situation) before the woman that she called mother would be filing to court to try get it revoked and passed to her.
fliss did not want to fight with her mother. the woman didn’t even tell her about it, a lawyer made her aware that her mother wanted to take it from her and was bringing her sanity into question. she didn’t even want all of it but the fact her mom was doing this to her made her more resistant. its a lot of responsibility and she needs to really think about what she wants to do about everything so is attempting to ignore the pressure.
little facts:
she’s not bothered about designer labels. if it’s pretty, she’ll buy it, whether it’s from chanel or a charity shop, it doesn’t matter to her. this is why she wears ariana’s perfume - a little goes a long way but can be known to putting on too much and accidentally irritating taxi drivers when she gets in.
tries to be positive to everyone and everything but it makes her feel good. she is naive when it comes to trusting people but wants to be loved so is ultimately a people pleaser.
she publishes her own music online using an alias of alisa w, like an alice in wonderland situation. fliss just likes creating for now and now she’s not modelling for her mother anymore (contract was terminated), she’s happy keeping out of the public eye as much as possible.
with what’s going on, she’s residing in her late grandfather’s upper east side penthouse :))
cries very easily - if she’s happy, sad or scared, she’ll be crying. fliss also very much wears her heart on her sleeve!
was labelled as ‘kooky’ pretty early on but doesn’t really mind. she does try to fit in but it never ends up being how she imagined. she's diagnosed with schizophrenia and autistic spectrum disorder and doesn't necessarily hide this. it's not that she hides it but there's never a moment for it to come up but she also feels like her mother will use her mental health against her when it has nothing to do with the situation.
loves blue eyeshadow!!
has drunk since she was a teen and still doesn’t know her limits :)
either cant sleep so she decides to scrap book while listening to music at three am or she does nothing but sleep.
is incredibly loyal and loving but doesn’t try to ask too many questions. her personality can sometimes be imposing as it is.
is trying to act like nothing is happening so is over-compensating with her chirpy personality.
likes all types of music apart from country, sorry :/
her fave colours are blue, green and purple but not together

TOGETHER.
Omertà means silence. It's is a vow that binds your soul to the Family; barring nothing from service. Leaks happen of course, and marriages are arranged in the idea to keep bloodlines pure. Be fruitful and multiply.
Carlo had been a made man for a while, finding a wife out of circumstance in a local heroin dealer, Leticia, much to the dismay of most in the Family. Unexpectedly, at one of the lower points in their marriage, they were expecting twins. Carlo had recently been released from jail on bail money that wiped out most of his savings, forcing him into as many jobs as possible to keep the family afloat. "One or the other," they decided, giving their second-born son up for adoption at the moment of birth.
APART.
The Paolazzi household often ran amuck in chaos, screaming and fighting. Uncorrupted by the Underworld, Rosemary found her escape in books, promising herself that when she got into college and became a doctor, this would all be behind her. The screaming, fighting over money- it would all be a thing of the past.
Dr. Donald Hughes took pity on the second-born, becoming a single father practically overnight. Naming the child Lucifer, his promise to his late wife would be completed: raising a child in their image. Though, for everything that Lucifer was, there were plenty of things that he wasn't: genuine was the word at the top of the list.
Omertà broken, consequences happen. One bullet per parent, back of the head while their daughter attended her high school. Marty adopts Rosemary, becoming more of a father to her than Carlo ever was. Olivine goes from being her cousin to her sister- but they were close enough that the change in nomenclature hardly felt like change at all. Karen, her aunt, passes from cancer later that year.
Lucifer experiences his first death in college. Debatably, it could be argued that he loved Jennifer, the first clarinet in orchestra. Always seen together, his smile appeared genuine when around her. Prospects of a proper marriage once they graduated hung on the horizon, before a car crash with a drunk driver took Jennifer's life too soon. Holding her in his arms as she lay dying, screeching cars ran around the intersection.
College continued to be a financial struggle. Odd hours between working as a stripper, classes, and running errands for the Family kept Rosemary in the throws of cocaine addiction, using the drug to stay awake for days on end. It wore her body down, crashing and sleeping for hours on end. Shame she had to be used as a talking point, abducted from her club, and branded with scars down the backside of her body. Tattoos and ink later, it didn't fix any of the keloid scarring.
Huzzah for the Cum Laude, his doctorate in Musical Composition dragged, assignment after assignment turning the recluse into more of a hermit, confirming his father's suspicions of some kind of anti-social personality disorder. Articulated practice for years on end earned him the first violin chair with the city's orchestra. Composing and giving lessons in the interim, he earned a modest income.
Power exchanges hands, and a quiet name moves through ranks, showing a natural inclination for power and that, no, it didn't corrupt, but reveal. Years barreled into each other, having perfect alibis for necessary murders and continuing to display her aptitude. Larger threats called for new thinking, addendums to rules and traditions saw her throned seated with glorious power and prestige. A silent revolution sees major changes in their city, the world bending to their whim. Don Rosemary Paolazzi- Dottore if you're keeping your mouth shut.
TOGETHER.
How strange, to receive a letter. Lucifer stared at the envelope, staring at it and the wax seal for several minutes before deciding to finally open it. Eyes scanned words, bemused for the first time in a while. He could make the meeting, why not. What did he have to lose after all?
Welcoming the tall man into her pit, faces stared, seeing some kind of specific, dramatic irony. It wasn't until Rosemary saw him face to face in her office that she experienced it herself: staring at Lucifer was like looking into a mirror. Catching him up to speed on her recently acquired knowledge, she explained their relation, and their kinship to almost all the people in the previous room.
Sure, he'd have no problem doing it. Doing any of it really, it provided a break from his hum-drum experience. After all, there wasn't much to any of it besides pulling a trigger. He could report back to his twin, collect money, and keep his head down. After all, he now had a perfect playground for his darker fantasies and she had a gunman.

Composting
Compost is the single most important supplement you can give your garden. It’s a simple way to add nutrient-rich humus to your lawn or garden that fuels plant growth and restores vitality to depleted soil. It’s also free, easy to make, and good for the environment. But composting also has other benefits.
Composting Benefits
Soil Conditioner
With compost, you are creating rich humus for your lawn and garden. This adds nutrients to your plants and helps retain soil moisture. They don’t call it “black gold” for nothing.
You're reading: Composting
Compost is the single most important supplement you can give your garden.
Recycles Kitchen and Yard Waste
Composting can divert as much as 30% of household waste away from the garbage can. That’s important because when organic matter hits the landfill, it lacks the air it needs to decompose quickly. Instead, it creates harmful methane gas as it breaks down, increasing the rate of global warming and climate change.
Introduces Beneficial Organisms to the Soil
Microscopic organisms in compost help aerate the soil, break down organic materials for plant use, and ward off plant disease.
Good for the Environment
Composting offers a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers when applied to lawns and garden beds.
Reduces Landfill Waste
Most landfills in North America are quickly filling up; many have already closed down. One-third of landfill waste is made up of compostable materials. Diverting this waste from the landfill means that our landfills will last longer (and so will our wild spaces).

What to Compost
What you can put into your compost will depend somewhat on what kind of composter you have, but some general rules do apply. All compostable materials are either carbon or nitrogen-based, to varying degrees. The secret to a healthy compost pile is to maintain a working balance between these two elements.
The Secret to a Healthy Compost Pile: Carbon/Nitrogen Ratio
Carbon Carbon-rich matter (like branches, stems, dried leaves, peels, bits of wood, bark dust or sawdust pellets, shredded brown paper bags, corn stalks, coffee filters, coffee grounds, conifer needles, egg shells, straw, peat moss, wood ash) gives compost its light, fluffy body.
A healthy compost pile should have much more carbon than nitrogen.
Nitrogen Nitrogen or protein-rich matter (manures, food scraps, green lawn clippings, kitchen waste, and green leaves) provides raw materials for making enzymes.
A healthy compost pile should have much more carbon than nitrogen. A simple rule of thumb is to use one-third green and two-thirds brown materials. The bulkiness of the brown materials allows oxygen to penetrate and nourish the organisms that reside there. Too much nitrogen makes for a dense, smelly, slowly decomposing anaerobic mass. Good composting hygiene means covering fresh nitrogen-rich material, which can release odors if exposed to open air, with carbon-rich material, which often exudes a fresh, wonderful smell. If in doubt, add more carbon!
This table details how the items in your compost are likely to be classified:
Material Carbon/Nitrogen Information Wood chips / pellets Carbon High carbon levels; use sparingly Wood ash Carbon Only use ash from clean materials; sprinkle lightly Tea leaves Nitrogen Loose or in bags Table Scraps Nitrogen Add with dry carbon items Straw or hay Carbon Straw is best; hay (with seeds) is less ideal Shrub prunings Carbon Woody prunings are slow to break down Shredded paper Carbon Avoid using glossy paper and colored inks Seaweed and kelp Nitrogen Apply in thin layers; good source for trace minerals Sawdust pellets Carbon High carbon levels; add in layers to avoid clumping Pine needles Carbon Acidic; use in moderate amounts Newspaper Carbon Avoid using glossy paper and colored inks Leaves Carbon Leaves break down faster when shredded Lawn & garden weeds Nitrogen Only use weeds which have not gone to seed Green comfrey leaves Nitrogen Excellent compost ‘activator’ Grass clippings Nitrogen Add in thin layers so they don’t mat into clumps Garden plants — Use disease-free plants only Fruit and vegetable scraps Nitrogen Add with dry carbon items Flowers, cuttings Nitrogen Chop up any long woody stems Eggshells Neutral Best when crushed Dryer lint Carbon Best if from natural fibers Corn cobs, stalks Carbon Slow to decompose; best if chopped up Coffee grounds Nitrogen Filters may also be included Chicken manure Nitrogen Excellent compost ‘activator’ Cardboard Carbon Shred material to avoid matting
Is There Anything I Definitely Shouldn’t Put in My Compost?
Do not compost meat, bones, or fish scraps (they will attract pests) unless you are using a composter designed specifically for this purpose. The Green Cone Solar Waste Digester is one good example.
Avoid composting perennial weeds or diseased plants, since you might spread weed seeds or diseases when spreading your compost.
Don’t include pet manures in compost that will be used on food crops.
Banana peels, peach peels, and orange rinds may contain pesticide residues and should be kept out of the compost.
Black walnut leaves should not be composted.
Sawdust may be added to the compost, but should be mixed or scattered thinly to avoid clumping. Be sure sawdust is clean, with no machine oil or chain oil residues from cutting equipment.

TIP: Storing Compost in the Kitchen
To store kitchen waste until you’re ready to transfer it to your composter, keep a container with a lid and a handle under the sink. A stainless steel compost pail with an carbon filter or a ceramic model will cut down on odors. If you don’t mind occasional smells, use an old ice-cream pail. Chop up any large chunks before you toss them in.
A Word About Yard Waste
With yard and garden wastes, different composting materials will decompose at different rates, but they will all break down eventually. If you want to speed up the composting process, chop the larger material into smaller pieces. Leaves and grass clippings are also excellent for compost but should be sprinkled into the bin with other materials, or dug in to the center of the pile and mixed. Avoid putting them on in thick layers – they will mat together and reduce aeration, which slows the composting process.
Adding garden soil to your compost will help to mask any odors, and microorganisms in the soil will accelerate the composting process.
Composting Leaves
If you have too many leaves to incorporate into the compost bin, you can simply compost the pile of leaves by itself. Locate the pile where drainage is adequate; a shaded area will help keep the pile from drying out.
The leaf pile should be at least 4′ in diameter and 3′ in height. Include a layer of dirt between each foot of leaves. The pile should be damp enough that when a sample taken from the interior is squeezed by hand, a few drops of moisture will appear. The pile should not be packed too tightly.
The pile will compost in 4 – 6 months, with the material being dark and crumbly. Leaf compost is best used as an organic soil amendment and conditioner; it is not normally used as a fertilizer because it is low in nutrients. TIP: Leaf-Mould Tea
Use leaves to make a nutritious “tea” for your plants. Simply wrap a small pile of leaves in burlap and immerse in a garbage can or large bucket of water. Leave for three days, then remove the “tea bag” and dump contents into the compost. Scoop out the enriched water with a smaller bucket and use to water your plants and shrubs.

How to Compost
Start your compost pile on bare earth. This allows worms and other beneficial organisms to aerate the compost and be transported to your garden beds.
Lay twigs or straw first, a few inches deep. This aids drainage and helps aerate the pile.
Add compost materials in layers, alternating moist and dry. Moist ingredients are food scraps, tea bags, seaweed, etc. Dry materials are straw, leaves, sawdust pellets and wood ashes. If you have wood ashes, sprinkle in thin layers, or they will clump together and be slow to break down.
Add manure, green manure (clover, buckwheat, wheatgrass, grass clippings) or any nitrogen source. This activates the compost pile and speeds the process along.
Keep compost moist. Water occasionally, or let rain do the job.
Cover with anything you have – wood, plastic sheeting, carpet scraps. Covering helps retain moisture and heat, two essentials for compost. Covering also prevents the compost from being over-watered by rain. The compost should be moist, but not soaked and sodden.
Turn. Every few weeks give the pile a quick turn with a pitchfork or shovel. This aerates the pile. Oxygen is required for the process to work, and turning “adds” oxygen. You can skip this step if you have a ready supply of coarse material like straw. Once you’ve established your compost pile, add new materials by mixing them in, rather than by adding them in layers. Mixing, or turning, the compost pile is key to aerating the composting materials and speeding the process to completion. If you want to buy a composter, rather than build your own compost pile, you may consider a buying a rotating compost tumbler which makes it easy to mix the compost regularly.

How to Choose a Composter
Choosing what type of composter will work best for you involves considering three main factors:
Where you live
What you’ll be composting
Whether you want to turn your compost manually or not
Where do you live? What will you be composting the most? Composting mostly kitchen scraps Composting kitchen scraps plus some yard waste Composting lots of yard waste Urban (no outdoor space) Worm bin (vermicomposting) Urban (some outdoor space, patio, or balcony) Worm bins or Compost tumbler Compost tumbler Suburban (with yard) Enclosed bin or compost tumbler Enclosed bin or compost tumbler Enclosed or DIY bin Rural (with yard/acreage) Enclosed bin, or compost tumbler Open compost pile, enclosed bin, or tumbler Open compost pile or multiple enclosed bins
If you’re prepared to turn your compost every 1-2 weeks and you live in an area with access to outdoor space and carbon rich materials, enclosed bins or open compost piles could work for you. If you live in an urban environment or your back isn’t ready for all that turning, compost tumblers or a worm composter are options worth considering. Read on to learn more about each of these compost systems and other composting tips.

Simplest Composting Methods
“No-Turn” Composting
The biggest chore with composting is turning the pile from time to time. However, with ‘no-turn composting’, your compost can be aerated without turning.
The secret is to thoroughly mix in enough coarse material, like straw, when building the pile. The compost will develop as fast as if it were turned regularly, and studies show that the nitrogen level may be even higher than with turned compost.
With ‘no-turn’ composting, add new materials to the top of the pile, and harvest fresh compost from the bottom of the bin. This can be easily done in an Aerobin Composter, or a Eco King compost bin. Which brings us to …
Enclosed Compost Bins
For small-scale outdoor composting, enclosed bins are the most practical. Enclosed bins include:
DIY Compost Bin
The least expensive method is to build one yourself from a heavy-duty garbage can. Simply drill 1.5-cm aeration holes in rows at roughly 15-cm intervals around the can. Fill the can with a mixture of high-carbon and high-nitrogen materials (see our table above). Stir the contents occasionally to avoid anaerobic pockets and to speed up the composting process. If the lid is secure, the bin can be laid on its side and rolled; a length of 2″ cedar ( use a 2×2 or a 2×4) can be bolted to the inside, running top to bottom, to help flip the material. Without this, the contents tend to stay in place while the bin is rolled.
Standard Compost Bins/Digesters
Another option is a compost bin, sometimes called a ‘compost digester’. Compost bins are enclosed on the sides and top, and open on the bottom so they sit directly on the ground. These are common composting units for homes in residential areas where bins tend to be smaller, yet enclosed enough to discourage pests. These bins are inexpensive, but it is difficult to turn the compost, so it can take several months to produce compost. These bins are thin-walled plastic, and may chip along the edges, especially during a freeze.
Food Waste Digester
These countertop ‘composters’ grind and dehydrate food waste rather than decomposing it. The process takes as little as three hours, leaving you with an odor-free material suitable for garden fertilizer. When finished, bury the resulting material beneath the soil surface, where the decomposition process kicks in–to the benefit of your plants.
Tumblers
The most efficient enclosed bin method is the compost tumbler. It’s possible to maintain relatively high temperatures in drum/tumbler systems, both because the container acts as insulation and because the turning keeps the microbes aerated and active. Some designs provide an interior “paddle” or “aeration spikes” which help bring air into the compost and prevent clumping of the composting materials. Other designs have holes on the ends for aeration. This greatly speeds up the composting process.
An enclosed ‘tumbler’ system offer the following benefits:
Speeds up the composting process
Composts year-round due to higher internal temperature
Can’t be accessed by rodents, raccoons, dogs, or other critters
Keeps compost neatly enclosed and odor-free; well-suited for residential areas and large apartment terraces or patios

Tips for Successful Composting
Activate Your Compost
‘Activators’ can be added to your compost to help kick-start decomposition and speed up composting. Common compost activators include: comfrey leaves, grass clippings, young weeds, and well-rotted chicken manure. You can also buy inoculant at your local garden center, though a shovel full of finished compost from another pile works just as well.
Flying Insects Attracted to Your Compost?
Small fruit flies are naturally attracted to the compost pile. Discourage them by covering any exposed fruit or vegetable matter. Keep a small pile of grass clippings next to your compost bin, and when you add new kitchen waste to the pile, cover it with one or two inches of clippings. Adding lime or calcium will also discourage flies.
Unpleasant Odors from Your Compost Pile?
This can be a concern in urban and suburban areas with small lots and neighbors living close by. Reduce or eliminate odors by following two practices: first, remember to not put bones or meat scraps into the compost; second, cover new additions to the compost pile with dry grass clippings or similar mulch. Adding lime or calcium will also neutralize odors. If the compost smells like ammonia, add carbon-rich elements such as straw, peat moss, or dried leaves. See 7 Signs Your Compost is Struggling and What You Can Do About It.
Is Your Compost Pile Steaming?
No problem. A hot, steamy pile means that you have a large community of microscopic critters working away at making compost.
Is Your Compost Pile Soggy?
This is a common problem, especially in winter, when carbon-based materials are in short supply. To solve this problem, you’ll need to restore your compost to a healthy nitrogen-carbon balance. To learn how restore your compost pile, read our article How to Fix a Soggy Compost Pile.
Matted Leaves, Grass Clippings Clumping Together?
This is a common problem with materials thrown into the composter. The wet materials stick together and slow the aeration process. There are two simple solutions: either set these materials to the side of the composter and add them gradually with other ingredients, or break them apart with a pitchfork. Grass clippings and leaves should be mixed with rest of the composting materials for best results.
Problems with Raccoons?
If there’s a population of raccoons in your area, they will be naturally attracted to your compost pile. The best solution to this problem is to bar their entry to the compost. (Traps and poisons are more trouble than they’re worth.) A wood or metal lid can be easily hinged to the bin described above on this page, or you can buy a commercially-made compost bin with secure fitted lids which are pest-proof, such as the Aerobin or Jora JK270.
A Moveable Feast
The soil beneath a compost bin becomes enriched as nutrients filter down with successive waterings. You can place your bin on a plot of earth that you plan to use for a future vegetable or flower bed, or fruit tree. Each year, you can move the bin to a different area; you’ll get a double benefit – the compost from the bin, and a bed of nutrient-rich soil ready for new plantings.
Take Advantage of Autumn’s Bounty
The biggest challenge for small-scale backyard composting is finding enough carbon-rich materials to balance the regular input of nitrogen-rich materials from kitchen scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, grass clippings, and other fresh materials.
To learn how to make the most of autumn’s bounty, read: Autumn Composting Tips
What About People Living in Urban Locations, Can We Compost Indoors?
Even if you live in an apartment or other urban location, you can still reduce your organic waste and produce your own compost for potted plants, balcony planters, or your plot in the local community garden. There are several different methods for composting indoors which are odor-free and compact enough for even small apartments. For more information about these and other indoor composting methods, read our article: How to Compost in an Apartment
What About Weed Seeds?
A liability in composting is the unexpected introduction of new weed seeds to your garden. This is caused by slow or incomplete composting that didn’t generate enough heat to kill any and all weed seeds. Weed seeds in compost are a nuisance because once the compost is transferred to your garden beds, the compost acts to fertilize the weeds and make them even more persistent! With home compost bins or piles, the way to eliminate weed seeds is twofold:
Make sure your compost is hot enough. Reach your hand into the center of the pile – it should be almost too hot for comfort. Specifically, the temperature should be 130 – 150 degrees F. It takes about 30 days at 140 degrees to kill all weed seeds.
Mix your pile. While your compost may be hot in the center of the mass, the outside of the pile is cooler, giving seeds a chance to survive. Mixing brings cooler material to the warmer area and also increases aeration, which helps attain the higher heat levels. Compost tumblers are very useful for this.
If you are buying bedding for animals, or using mulch or carbon-rich material to bulk up your compost pile, be aware of introducing seeds to your garden via the compost. For example, make sure to get straw, and not hay, since straw is mostly weed-free. Ask the sales staff if there have been any complaints about seeds in these products.

Covid 19 Domestic Abuse Resources
Due to increased social and physical distancing as a response to COVID-19, many domestic violence victims are at greater risk of abuse due to:
isolation, through which abuse thrives,
fewer opportunities for social support,
fewer public venues and events through which victims may be able to seek help or flee, and
close confinement with an abuser.
Many abusive partners are also using COVID-19 as an opportunity to further gaslight, control, and isolate potential abuse survivors by:
withholding and limiting food,
withholding medical supplies,
preventing a potential survivor from accessing medical care,
confiscating a potential survivor's devices, preventing communication with advocates and hotlines, and
escalating physical abuse for which potential survivors may be hesitant--or unable--to seek medical care due to an already overloaded healthcare system.
Below are some resources for domestic violence victims to utilize during this pandemic.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love My Freezer
Tumblr media
hutchyb for Getty Images/iStockphoto
There’s a technique — even a flair — to freezing food successfully
My mother is what you might call a culinary cryogenicist. Long before the crew at the Noma Food Lab grew their first flavor spore, my mom was experimenting with the effects of age and temperature on all kinds of foodstuffs: the last two bites of some mac and cheese. Four shrimp. One-third of a pork chop. Three matzo balls. Half a bag of green beans tied shut with a trash bag twist-tie. An old joint. Eight slices of rye bread. Raisins. So. Much. Ham. And that’s just the first shelf of the freezer.
It was a talent she inherited. Her own mother was a master of the freezer arts, best exemplified by the very same “tray of frozen shrimp” offered to us on every grandparent visit for more than two decades; it became a running family joke. As a member of the next generation, however, my family’s faith in the preservation power of cold turned me into a devoted freezer snob. For most of my adult life, my freezer has remained a sacred space reserved for only the most cold-hardy ingredients — ice cream, popsicles, those giant cocktail ice spheres, and maybe the occasional box of toaster waffles or bag of frozen peas. Meat? God no. Fish? Please, back away and leave quietly.
In my mind, freezing things ruined their precious molecular integrity by turning them into rock-hard cubes. Meat is normally prized for its “freshness.” In the fields, crops are carefully covered to prevent freezing, so why put them under such duress in your own home? Having kids a few years ago loosened me up a bit — show me one child-rearing American household a without a frozen bag of dinosaur-shaped chicken blobs lurking somewhere. But overall, for the better part of the last decade, my freezer has remained as sleek and food-free as an after-hours Apple Store.
But when COVID-19 hit I admittedly went into full hoarder mode. My diet, like my fashion, is dictated by my mood (it’s also why I’m a chronic over-packer). With annual memberships to Instacart, Amazon Fresh, and a handful of specialty grocers down the street, I’d become accustomed to getting all the ingredients to sate any craving within an hour of it hitting. Maintaining that level of spontaneity in the time of supermarket lines and impossible delivery queues meant stocking up in ways I’d never fathomed before.
Even with a family of four eating three-plus meals a day, the kind of inventory I was sporting needed to be able to hang out a while. And so, it was with deep reservations that I finally began freezing things — though the real miracle didn’t occur until I began un-freezing them.
First I tried a pork tenderloin, one of three I had purchased at Costco a few weeks earlier. Following the advice of the pros, I took it out of the freezer and put it in my fridge overnight, cooked it as usual, and it was… fine. Good, even. Next I tried salmon — I’ve had terrible experiences with frozen seafood in the past, so my hopes were low for the three rosy-pink portions I defrosted and broiled. But again, the resulting fish was surprisingly moist, fatty, firm, delicious.
After that I started throwing everything in the freezer just to see: ground turkey, chicken thighs. All were fine. Then I moved into pizza dough, shredded cheese, blanched vegetables; then on to chili, tortillas, pancakes, whole loaves of bread, coffee (while dry coffee beans won’t technically “go bad,” their flavor and aroma suffer over time). Pretty much every single thing I froze — and later unfroze — emerged as relatively unharmed and tasty as the day I bought it. (Notable exceptions included skim milk and some poorly wrapped steaks, and it took some serious trial and error with fresh greens.)
Now, as we go into week five… or six? of “safer at home” measures, my freezer has transformed from a sterile ice-storage facility to a clutch partner in culinary crime. Today the once-barren shelves are buckling beneath the weight of dated and labeled baggies and bins with enough perfectly preserved food to more than bridge the gap between bi-weekly produce box deliveries and masked-up grocery runs.
But as it turns out, my mom and grandmother were, in fact, artists — there is a technique, even a flair to freezing food successfully. Wrap something improperly or defrost incorrectly and you might not just risk the integrity of your ingredients, but also your health. So after a month or so of embracing my familial fate and becoming a frozen food convert, here are a few lessons I’ve learned:
The Container Matters
I know, plastic is the enemy, but those fancy glass containers can crack in the freezer. According to the experts, the best way to freeze food is in a vacuum-seal bag that you suction yourself with one of those fancy machines to minimize air (air is your enemy in the great freezer wars). I don’t have one of those — though I’ve been eyeing this one on Amazon — so I use regular old freezer-grade zipper bags and press out as much air as possible before sealing. There’s also a trick where you mimic a vacuum sealer with a drinking straw, slipping it in the corner of the bag and sucking out as much air as you can before pulling the straw out at the last minute, but I felt weird inhaling all those funky meat fumes. My Instagram feed has been full of ads for these pricey silicone bags that I hear work well but I’ve yet to give them a test run.
Either way, you’re going for minimal air exposure and some thickness barrier — a little cushion between your food and the freezer air will help prevent that dreaded freezer burn, a damaging mix of oxidation and dehydration.
Prep Is Key
For meat and fish, you generally want to remove them from their original packaging and re-wrap in individual portions before freezing. Wrapping each cut in an extra layer of plastic before putting them in the zipper bag adds another degree of protection. Timing is key here. Freeze cuts of meat immediately after you get them home, or better yet, buy them pre-frozen. There are entire industries built around freezing fish in a way that sacrifices the least in the way of flavor and texture, so trust the pros — they know what they’re doing.
Vegetables, for the most part, should be quickly blanched before freezing. The drag here is that in the process of blanching, they absorb too much water to get any sort of good roasty char later, but it’s a small price to pay for having quality seasonal produce year-round. Before you blanch, prep the ingredients the way you plan to eat them, meaning separating broccoli and cauliflower into florets, snapping the ends off green beans, and chopping greens. Then boil a big pot of water and dunk the vegetables in for about a minute before plunging immediately into a big bowl of icy water. This will keep them from continuing to cook and turning to mush. The next part is key: Dry everything as best you can. The more water, the thicker the tectonic ice coating you’ll get on every piece. Then put everything into baggies and freeze.
Fruit freezing techniques vary — it all depends what you want to use them for. No amount of freezer skill will recreate the experience of biting into a fresh peach after it’s been frozen. But for smoothies, pie fillings, baking, or juice, most fruit will freeze just fine. Bananas freeze great, peel and all. Berries you’ll want to rinse, dry, then let freeze on a large flat surface like a cookie sheet before transferring to bags. If you want to use citrus just for zest or juice, go ahead and freeze them whole. They say you can freeze citrus in wedges individually, but I found the texture suffers greatly after defrosting, and honestly I can’t imagine what you’d want to use floppy, deflated tangerine wedges for. Juice is no problem — just squeeze, put the juice into an ice cube mold and freeze. You can pop them out later and transfer to a plastic bag for easier storage.
The above ice-cube tray technique works well for all kinds of liquids and purees. I actually bought these cool molds to freeze baby food for my second kid, and I use them now for smaller portions of stocks, lemon juice, pesto, pizza sauce. For larger batches, I pour a couple of cups into a zipper bag, get out as much air as possible, and freeze them flat so I can stack them later.
Breads freeze fantastically, but as a rule pre-sliced is best. I started buying giant loaves of my favorite rye bread from the farmers market and keep them in the freezer full-time, toasting off individual slices as needed; my mom perfected a technique with bagels that involves slicing them as soon as you get them home, wrapping each half separately, and then toasting them direct from the freezer. Pre-cooked tortillas and pita you can just wrap, freeze, and cook off one by one, but my most exciting recent discovery has been in the realm of pre-baked goods. It turns out most doughs recover well after freezing, and I just made a batch of biscuits using this technique that has you freezing the raw, cut biscuits ahead of time and baking them off as needed. It’s opened up a whole new world of frozen pastry projects for me.
I’m sure there’s some technique to freezing cheese but honestly I just put whole hunks and bags of the pre-shredded stuff straight into the freezer. I don’t really freeze milk but the wisdom is that the more fat content, the better it freezes, so half-and-half freezes great, skim milk not so much. Coffee I found out you can freeze and brew straight from frozen, which is excellent considering it is an absolute nonnegotiable in my house.
*If you’re curious about any other ingredient, there are countless guides to freezing food online that will steer you in the right direction.
Don’t Rush the Defrost
(Even Though Sometimes I Do, But It’s Really Risky, Okay?)
The basic rule of thumb for pretty much everything is low and slow. Put whatever you want to defrost in the refrigerator the night before you want to cook it — sometimes longer for big cuts of meat — and let it come to temperature gradually. I do this... most times. But there is a reason your microwave has a “defrost” setting, and it will definitely speed things along if also putting you at risk of prematurely cooking the edges of your chicken breast. I’ve successfully defrosted smaller cuts of fish and shrimp by running the bags under cold water in the sink for a few minutes until soft enough to handle, but this is not officially endorsed by the pros. What you’re definitely not supposed to do is let your ingredients hang out at room temp until they defrost. I have done this too, though it is a surefire recipe for a bacterial infection and this is not the time you want to be running to the ER for dehydration.
The point is, the freezer might be cold and dark, but it is not at all a thing to fear. Utilizing it well has helped me maintain the kind of spur-of-the-moment cooking style that feels normal to me — a valuable thing when pretty much everything else about my life right now does not feel normal. Now all I need is a bigger freezer.

The CMOH challenge (clean my own house) So being a SHINKy till 40 afforded me many luxuries (impulse international travel, random money dumps on frivolous things, $200jeans, $2000 bags and $7 coffee. Many Of these luxuries I gave up (or scaled down) when moved on in life and became a Burbie. But one luxury has followed me my entire adult life and has actually transitioned from luxury to mandatory in my Burbie book - a home cleaner! As a kid, my West Indian mom was all about making me and sis clean the entire house when we were old enough, which lead to my sis and I hiding from her, slacking off and ignoring her demands.... which led to her Oscar winning dramatic performance of being fed up with her lazy ass kids. She'd fall down on the floor with heavy cries and the words went something like "LAWD LAWD!!! I can't do this by me-self LAWD!!! FADAHH GAWD PLEASE PRAY FOR DEEEZ LAZY CHIL'REN AHH MIIINNNEEE!! I PRAYYYi live to see tomorrow cuz ah gon' fall down DEAD wit' doom all dis housework by meh-self!!! FADAHH GAAAAWWD I PRAY!!! " it worked when we were little kids cuz we were just in shock by her dramatic fall (she's no small woman). But as we got older we would just sit and time what part of the drama was coming next and silently giggle together. Yes we're ungrateful kids I know....... and clearly my issues with housecleaning started young. Now I've changed cleaning ladies and services over the years but always made I sure kept at least one in my contact list that I could call anytime and within 48hours they come and make me feel whole again - bring me back to my center..... like I said MANDATORY!! I used to have a personal cleaner, then I switched to a service - there is a difference - here's the breakdown: Cleaning lady: PRO: spends 5-8 hours in your space climbing up ladders, going under beds dusting, washing, and vacuuming every crack and crevice until all your fluid bottles are empty and you have to wear a mask from the product fumes - when she leaves your house is sparkly shiny and giving you life! CON: they prefer that you leave your house while they clean so you have to find something to do for 8 hours and you have to build trust. They also get in your business sometimes and you just want to tell them off - but you can't! Well you shouldn't! Cleaning Service: PROs: they always have someone available and the owner is ready to haggle a price. The service I use is Russian and they show up in front of my house in a minivan with a Big Russian dude driving - he drops of someone and comes back 4 hours later to pick her up. You can stay home and tell her everything you need her to do step by step. If you don't like the person they assigned to you, just call and they'll give you a new person CONs: Anna is our assigned cleaner and she comes of that van every other Saturday at 6am waking us out of our sleep! There's no time choice. Also, most of them speak no English - or at least she acts like she doesn't..... so you have to call the owner and have them negotiate on anything they don't want to do. The great thing is that home cleaners are relatively inexpensive out in the Burbs. I pay the same for a 5ksqft house that I paid from my 1 bedroom NYC apartment so there has been no reason to give this up!!! Until now! New Home, New space to learn about and I want to get to know every corner before I pass the torch to Anna. So i assigned my self the CMOH challenge. For 1 month I decided to pull out my big yellow rubber gloves and CleanMyOwnHouse! Well that month went slow.... actually it took 2 and 1/2 weeks before I was calling for Anna again. Not because i didn't want to do it, I really just didn't have the time What I learned from the CMOH challenge: 1) household electrics have gotten much simpler! When I first brought up the Dyson vacuum from the basement, my lil Pops says to me "Mommy what are you doing with that?" Me: I'm about to vacuum the house. Pops: YOU???? Me: Yes! Pops: Why? Me: because the house needs cleaning. Pops: Where's the Peach lady that doesn't speak English? Did she die? My face was filled with shock and disbelief! What have I been teaching this kid???!!! It took me another 15 minutes to start because I had to have a sit down with Pops to explain to him that he said something inappropriate and also explain to him it was my fault. Once I turned on the vacuum, I found it quite easy to use. I was going around the baseboards, the curtains and under the beds like a champ. And when I put on my headset it was like I was in a zone (kinda like a workout but with less instruction and less sweating). It was cathartic! 2) It's ok to get help if you need to and can afford it. Clearly in my childhood home I was taught hard physical work was a badge of honor. In fact I've observed that most black people traditionally do not believe in having someone else clean their home, coming into their space. They think it's for rich people. I realize now that even though I CAN CleanMyOwnHouse, i don't NEED to. If it's a choice between spending that extra time doing constructive with Pops and Hubs. Now the CMOH challenge is done. I have redeemed myself with my childhood and I'm calling Anna tomorrow so I can get a manicure.

What an absolutely terrible time in history to have thin walls, limited alone time, and a frenzied sex drive. It also totally sucks if isolation has destroyed your vibrator of choice (and desensitized your bits in the process). If you have the funds, it’s now more than ever important to find yourself some whisper quiet sex toys. You may be lacking human contact, but you’re still cooped up with nosy roommates, suspicious partners, and family members who still think you’re as pure as the prima ballerina photos still hanging in your childhood bedroom (bless).
“Rechargeable vibrators tend to be quieter than battery-operated ones, but not because of the battery itself,” says Alexandra Fine, sexologist and CEO of Dame Products. “The motors in battery-operated vibrators tend to rattle, and therefore be noisier. All of Dame’s products are rechargeable—which also makes it easier to prevent your vibrator from running out of juice when you need it most.”
Duly noted. And thanks to the beauty of online sex toy shopping, a lot of them will straight up share if keeping quiet is a feature. Like let’s face it, having 80,000 vibrational patterns is useless if they’re going to wake up the entire household. But don’t worry, we’ve done the research (read: I will not be quarantining with parents during the next pandemic) and can vouch for these gadgets that can keep your pleasure on the DL.
Quiet sex toys for when you need to be discreet
1. Bender by Unbound, $69
For when you’re looking for some flexibility… like, literally. With 10 speeds and a two hour battery life, Bender is a G-spot vibe that can also go the distance with whichever erogenous zones you fancy. It promises to be very, very quiet, much like many of its other siblings at Unbound (and pro-tip, they all use the same charger)!
2. Lelo Mia 2, $51
Lelo is known for it’s sophisticated stylings and luxury toys- their Ora 2 oral simulator is a good buy if you’re missing out on the real thing. They also practically invented the “whisper quiet” genre, and the classy, clitoral-targeting Mia 2 can give you low-key vibes whenever you need them. Best part? This red hot number is on mega sale right now!
3. Lelo Soraya 2, $165
If you do want to invest and get a good deal, we have Lelo’s sleek take on a classic rabbit vibrator, Soraya 2, also discounted. She’s a peach: four hours of playtime and 12 settings, a smooth way to guide yourself towards a blended orgasm.
4. Le Wand Bullet, $85
Hi, this vibrator effing rocks. It’s a classic bullet with two detachable silicone heads, so you can switch up your sensations while keeping your vibes pretty straightforward. As for the volume factor, I’ll say this: I received the Le Wand Bullet at my last pre-lockdown shindig, I took it with me when I had to quarantine in a very crowded home, and even in a bedroom with no locks I trust its discretion.
5. Dame Pom, $99
Candidly, I recommend this friend a lot; it came down to this and Dame’s tiny wearable Fin, but in a personal test down before I wrote this (not done on myself), Fin’s just 1 percent louder. Pom is unique for being adorable, squishy, and malleable. It’s not an oral sex simulator per se, but if you get creative with some lube or arousal oil, the shape can bring you to familiar places.
6. Womanizer Pro, $149
If you’re less about fumbling with rumbling and more into suction sex toys, we have some fabulous news! This guy has 12 different settings and a silent mode that’ll keep your pleasure under covers (like, literally, probably). The real challenge will be keeping your own decibel levels down!
