Something I saw on Reddit yesterday has sent me into a spiral of wonderfulness about Gold Rush.

A reminder of what Taylor said about Gold Rush, that it: “takes place inside a single daydream where you get lost in thought for a minute and then snap out of it.”

I had a theory from very early on that Gold Rush was about kaylor meeting at the Met Gala in 2011. I didn’t have any solid ‘evidence’ of this, but some stuff stuck out. As a refresher, we know that they met and had an interaction at the 2011 Met Gala because a year and a half later Karlie said that this was when the baking date joke first started. They joked about it, Taylor then mentioned it during her Vogue interview Sept 13, 2011, and then Karlie saw it when Vogue was released in January 2012 and tweeted ‘your kitchen or mine?’ Karlie wore a gold dress that year to the Met Gala and then 8 years later, she famously wore another gold dress and captioned her insta post “Gold Rush”.

What really made me think Gold Rush was about the 2011 Met Gala was just the whole way it vibes with the toe storyline, because I think the Toe fanfiction was invented to mimic Kaylor’s actual truth, partly to allow Taylor to write about her experiences and attribute them to joe in a believable way. It’s easier to lie when it’s partly true. So if Taylor first developed a crush on Karlie at the Met Gala 2011, it just smoothly fits into this toe thing, in a way. This is especially true when you add in the fact that Dianna was also there, and then Taylor and Dianna may have started something within days of when Taylor shouted out Karlie in the Vogue interview in Sept 2011, and both Karlie and Dianna tweeted about the Vogue cover in a flirtatious way. You end up with this messy bit of a love triangle type thing going on, not too far off from the mess that was Calvin/Tom/Joe (Karlie) in 2016. Not that I think we can say that anything really was going on between kaylor at this time, but you can definitely see flirting and crushing going on, which fits the toe narrative about them being friends and texting while Taylor secretly had a crush while dating Tom. Not exactly the same of course, but if this was all happening back then it gives her this ability to write about real situations and feelings while being able to attribute it to the boyfriends. And the whole message of Gold Rush is that it’s just a dream and it could never be. And so it was for another 2 years (in the toe fantasy it was just 3 months of her daydreaming about it and thinking it could never be.)

So this was just a silly, fun idea I had until yesterday when I saw this excerpt form her Vogue interview on Reddit. Keep in mind the spring 2012 show took place in Sept 2011:

I also realized that in August 2011, in the same sort of timeframe all this was going on, Taylor wore a Philadelphia Eagles shirt during Speak Now tour 👀

And on top of all that, at this time karlie was getting what I consider to be her first real chance at fame outside of the fashion world, because she got a cover story for Life Magazine, released Sept 10, 2011 (all this going on at the same time is kinda crazy!) And this video was part of that photoshoot:

muses: the red lover and the 1989 heartbreaker

I cannot get out of my mind just how messy the falling in love songs on Red are in terms of the Timeline and when they were written if they are supposed to be about men.

I’m not going to include receipts you can double check me in this masterpost of song writing dates and ofc @swiftgronmasterpost.

Let’s take EHC, Come Back... Be Here, and Treacherous.

It’s just three songs but the male muses associated w them are very confusing.

Let’s take Come Back... Be Here.  Taylor wrote this song with Dan Wilson sometime in spring 2012.  It’s about someone who has to leave her and travel for work just after they’ve gotten involved.

Conor Kennedy is out - he was 17 and as far as we know they hadn’t met yet and he also wasn’t travelling anywhere...he was a child in high school.

You would think Harry would fit but Taylor meets him supposedly on March 31, 2012 (and goes to a house party at Dianna’s that night💁‍♀️) and then go to NYC (Dianna in tow of course 💁‍♀️) together.  Haylor (plus Dianna 💁‍♀️) is in NYC together for about a week and then Taylor goes to Nashville, Harry goes to Australia, and Dianna stays in NYC.  Harry never makes it to London before “cheating on Taylor” by being papped kissing a girl at the end of April 2012, thus ending their short romance before he ever returns back to London.  During their spring fling he was never in NYC without her, nor was he ever in London without her.

Dianna goes to London a couple times that Spring.

So we have either a mystery man (some hetlors say Jake and one really enthusiastic Zac Efron fan tries to make it about him) or Dianna fitting the song.

Treacherous was written that spring as well again with Dan Wilson and she easter eggs Harry in the liner notes, as well as tying it back to him by saying it’s about the same muse as the IKYWT muse and very acutely letting everyone know IKYWT is “about Harry” as well.

So the muse is either Harry or ofc, possibly Dianna who she was inseparable from that spring.

And finally we know she wrote Everything Has Changed on May 15th, 2012 due to to her tweeting about writing the song with Ed.  She easter eggs Conor in the Liner notes with “Hyiannis port” but as far as we know she had not met him at that point.  Dianna (with that iann in her name too!) was ofc at Hyannis with Taylor as well.  Furthermore if the line “meet me there tonight” in EHC is to be taken literally, well Taylor literally did go and have dinner that night with Dianna.

So the muse for EHC is either Conor (though as far as we know they hadn’t met yet, he was still 17 at that point) or Dianna.

Three “falling in love songs” on the Red album, and three different male muses (a mystery man, Conor, and Harry) OR Dianna fitting the thread for ALL of them.

Furthermore, wouldn’t it make sense if the falling in love muse was the breakup muse on 1989?  Like wouldn’t Taylor fall for someone on one album and the falling songs follow the same thread for the songs she’s writing about on the following album if she had broken up with that person?

Where are the breakup songs for Conor?  If he inspired emotion as beautiful as displayed in EHC why aren’t there breakup songs about him?  What about the mystery guy from Begin Again or Come Back... Be Here?  They were worth writing love songs about but no breakup songs?

All the breakup songs on 1989 are supposed to be about Harry.

Treacherous seems to be about the same muse as Style, Wonderland(which btw, Alice in Wonderland was Dianna’s entire personality back in the day), and IKP (driving around late at night, and a desperation to keep the relationship a secret).

AYHTDWS and IWYW (oh btw it’s about an ex that moved near her, written in 2013, Harry didn’t move to LA until 2014 while Dianna moved near Taylor in summer 2013 💁‍♀️) could be viewed up as a follow up to Come Back... Be Here wishing again her lover would come back or had stayed with her.  But CBBH doesn’t fit for Harry though we’re supposed to believe the 1989 tracks are for him.

And most blatant mirroring we get is EHC vs. Clean.  In EHC the butterflies are the beautifulful kind and Taylor is dusting off her highest hope.  In Clean the butterflies have turned to dust.  The rain pours down on her in both songs.

But EHC is supposed to be about Conor according to the liner notes and Taylor nearly said Clean was about Harry when she said she was inspired to write the song about her ex when she was in the same city as him in London.

Meanwhile Dianna ebs and flows throughout Taylor’s life from fall 2011 to early 2014, showing up again and again during supposed Haylor moments 💁‍♀️, tweeting “DATEME” at Taylor, acting sus in interviews about Taylor (referring to her and Taylor as “we” when talking about the Kennedy’s accepting them into the fold, insanely saying “I cannot say” when asked about Taylor dedicating songs to her on the Red album), posting to Tumblr about secret love, tweeting at Taylor the simpiest stuff you’ve ever seen, as Taylor tweets about Glee and shows up on the Glee set “just to see who’s there”, and then they get “outed” and Dianna deletes her public tumblr, posts about “lost love” to her private tumblr, and Taylor ignores Dianna’s birthday and texts Austin about regretting all her decisions.

Then Ten months later Taylor writes Clean and says she’s 10 months sober, 13 months after she broke up with Harry?

So Taylor fell for three different guys on the Red Album and then wrote a break up album about only one or them...

OR

It’s Dianna, who fits all these falling in love songs on Red given the Timeline of Events and who disappears from Taylor’s life just as Taylor starts to write 1989 mysteriously, despite being special best bestie throughout the Red era.

Which makes more sense to y’all?

Dianna didn’t intentionally make Quinn gay for Rachel but she couldn’t help it in the early days with her personal life with Lea

pls right?? i mean i think it’s funny bc quinn is a gay coded character bc her christian guilt/repression combined with her obsession w status and popularity (hence her never seeming to actually like the guys she was with) definitely made the character come off as a lesbian to a lot of people. i think once the audience picked up on that combined w the way people shipped her and lea, they did eventually write it into the script in s3 and beyond a bit.. and at that point, maybe she leaned into it slightly. i absolutely do not think it was ever her intention to play quinn as a gay character at first though. some actresses reaaaaalllllllyyy tease it and play into it but dianna didn’t much (that i remember) and was clearly uncomfortable with the speculation around her own sexuality and private life, as she later confirmed. as for faberry... some was subtext, some was questionably written text, and some was just their chemistry. all IMO of course!

Day 354

This weekend was rough. Largely because it’s really, really hot.

In fact, it’s incredibly hot and that’s making my stomach act up. 

Also, the world isn’t quite so kind and it’s getting into my head. People are hurting and dying and being gunned down in a country that has never really been about freedom. It… it becomes a weight at times, and while yes, I’m abroad, the recent events coupled with the KyoAni Fire have just been a bit much. It becomes scary. It becomes an intense weight. It becomes a reason to tuck away and want to never go out into the world unless absolutely necessary.

But I refuse to stop my life: I have to keep going. I can’t just hide in my home and decide to never interface with the world: I think that’s what terror –and those who perpetuate terror- would like for folks to do. They want to see the world burn: I want to see life come from the ashes and reclaim. 

(I don’t genuinely want to hide: I just can’t help but sometimes feel like it.)

I’m afraid, yes, but I’m not going to stop. There’s still too much good in the world and too many attempts to do right for me to just throw in the towel.

So here’s how I’m reclaiming my week. Well, my day.

In my attempt to shift my life-blogging persona into an aspect of my professional identity, I created a card. Well, now it needs a bit of an update. So I’ve gone in an updated it to look a bit crisper and more organized. It even has tabs that you can click on so I can better make it a viewable C/V that you can preview versus a really simple site.

I’ll be making it into a pinned tweet this week!

Decided that learning lettering may be beneficial to my current long-term goals

So over the past few months, I’ve been considering entering translation and localization, largely because my experience with Japanese and English has really encouraged me to do something I love with those skills. But this weekend, I considered lettering as part of that overall goal, and found that that felt right.

The former is a solid goal: while I’ll still work towards having a solid day job for things like health care and steady funds, I have plans to also begin my work with freelancing in translation and localization.

I’m going to focus on proficiency in CSP, or Clip Studio Paint. I have access to the program on my iPad, which would be a tool I’d be using should I also choose to do lettering. I’d also like to get some basic understanding of Photoshop under my belt again: I had a decent level of proficiency in high school and college, but it’s also been... 10 years since high school and six since undergrad. A refresher might be good.

At most, it’s part of my potential plans for next year. At minimum, it’s a new skill that I can use for my own private purposes. Overall, it’ll give me an appreciation of all the hard work that goes into lettering manga, both in Japanese and English. And honestly, I think a deeper appreciation for what a lot of my friends do can be only beneficial.

(Now to figure out the other aspects of my goals... I’ll get there in due time!)

Chose two manga to practice translation (and potentially lettering) with

So I received an incredibly kind offer last night: the chance to have some of my translation practice reviewed. Of course, I said yes: this is essential to my growth, and a good chance to practice accepting help and kindness.

So naturally, that means making a choice.

And I did, this morning, very spur of the moment: a manga about gothic Lolita clothing and growing up (着たい服がある / Working Title: Those Clothes I Want to Wear) and a manga about koto and the feeling of falling in love with music (この音とまれ! Working Title/Official Title: Sounds of Life!).

They’re both from two different genres with two very different stories. I think they’ll help me a lot with my ongoing private practice and study.

My goal is do a first read through by next Wednesday. Then I can do a second of the first chapter, and take notes. After that… we’ll start translating and localizing the text. I’ll also be building my first Word Bank (a file with keywords and phrases to help keep things in order) alongside my work.

I already have a bit of an idea of how I want things to shake out, but it’ll take a deeper dive into reading both volumes –and watching the manga for KonoOto- for me to decide the direction I’d go if given these are work.

Thankfully, what this’ll do is give me a base for my portfolio: I really want to have six to eight samples across multiple genres for next year when I start shopping myself around. Also, this is a bit of prep for the Manga Translation Battle, which I will enter without the intent of winning. (Winning would be great: having eyes on my work is even better.)

Once more, it’s win-win, which is exactly what I like!

Did Some Listening Practice w/ New Game!

It’s what’s on the tin: I did some listening practice with the anime New Game! It’s cute, and surprisingly, really easy for me to understand. Bit by bit, I’m getting better at catching words and phrases without subtitles. I’m gonna watch a few more episodes over very late dinner, and then pick up studying at my desk tomorrow!

Read for Pleasure

Something I’ve struggled with over the past few months is taking time for myself to enjoy reading. I think when I read lately, it’s usually in the context of study or knowledge gaining, or something of the like: it’s never expressly for the purpose of pleasure.

So… I picked up my brand new copy of Dianna Wynne Jones’ Fire and Hemlock and J-Novel Club’s physical release of Hiratori Ko’s JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World and let myself have some levity this evening, even if I didn’t read for too terribly long.

A habit is made in small steps, not great leaps.

But I have to say that reading on the train, on my sofa bed after dinner…

…simple perfection.

All together a really successful day! I'm so proud of myself for doing a good amount of things. I'll do even more tomorrow! For now... late dinner and ice cream! Yay!

Final Lookbook

Here are the screenshots of my finished lookbook for WGSN’s Womenswear Forecast A/W 22/23 Supercharged Simplicity with Flex Leisure being my chosen trend. I chose this trend as I really liked the narrative behind it as it was really relevant to the world we live in now, also the chosen garments for this trend that mix casual with luxury would be a way I’d happily dress myself and therefore think it would be easier producing a good quality lookbook. As shown in the beginning when I was experimenting with photoshop I had looked at two different trends which were colour play and artful expression but I found it harder to research and find imagery that fit in with these trends as well as the flex leisure trend. While looking for relevant imagery for this trend I thought of brands and designers which were known for either nude tone knitwear or varsity and sporty style sweatshirts or retro style footwear and included then into my lookbook, I have used a few images from wgsn but most of the images are what I’ve found myself as I felt they showed the narrative clearer.

The influences for this included icons such as Princess Dianna and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy who have been photographed many times in a similar way to this trend, for example Princess Dianna at a polo club wore a sweatshirt with an oversized blazer over the top – these are two key garments of the trend. Carolyn was also named ‘queen of 90’s minimalist fashion’ which again works well with this trend as it is a more minimalistic trend with muted tones, she’s been photographed several times wearing quite simple garments such as jeans but then elevating the look with a smart sweatshirt and structured luxury handbag. The main colour palette for this trend is nude tones with hints of darker blues and reds, this is significant to the trend as beiges and nude tones always come across as a more luxurious and put together tone, then the colour accents highlight the sporty aspect of the trend. With regard to material choice I would say it is 80% jersey due to the sweatshirts and then and then just a basic cotton or cotton mix for the tailored garments such as the trench coats and blazers. The garments are a mixed of relaxed and structured, for example the sweatshirts are relaxed items of clothing while the tailored items add structure even through the blazers and trench coats are oversized.

With regards to font I looked at the images of garments which had text on and tried to find a font as close to this as possible, I used Adobe fonts to find this and believe that ‘Rockwell’ was the closest I could get, I typed out some of my work and looked at it in view mode to see if it fit the trend correctly which it did. With the size of the font all the sub texts are a size 10 so that it doesn’t dominate the page and can still be easily read, the title is size 36 so that readers are aware that is the trend.

After completing the lookbook and evaluating it I believe it is of a good and professional standard. To begin with the front cover I only wanted one image that I believed gave a good start point as to what the trend was about. I took the layout inspiration from a pinterest image that I previously posted and created my own geometric shape on illustrator and used it as a frame around my image. I really love this effect and think it looks really well put together as the shape is the exact colour as the text on the models sweatshirt. With the background colour I used a colour dropper to get the exact colour of garments that fitted in with this trend and chose one that complimented my image used the most, I did this throughout my entire lookbook as the background will always be within the colour palette and compliments the images of models and garments. The one thing about this page that I’m still not sure on is the text, the font size and spacing is how I’d like it but I still don’t think the layout is 100%, even though I had tried multiple different layout options this looked the best but I’m still not quite happy with it, therefore in the future I should look at more title inspirations to see if there were any that would have suited my narrative better than the way I’ve done it.

For my first double page I wanted a few images of models that really portrayed the narrative of my theme, this is why I chose three models wearing key garments – sweatshirts, oversized blazers and retro accessories. For the background I chose two vintage images of tennis courts to set the sporty theme and used sliced repeated images of a tennis court, I really like the stripes with the models standing over them as I believe it gives some depth and dimension to the pages. Again with the front cover for the sub text ‘comfort meets style’ I used the colour dropper to duplicate the same colour of text as the sweatshirt from one of my images, then the paragraph is the same colour as the sliced image of the court, I really like this and by keeping the text to colours of garments its always going to be within the chosen colour palette. I like this page but I did worry if it was too minimalistic with only three models, so next time I would probably add a fourth and find a way to incorporate it so the pages still look clean, minimalistic and not cluttered.

My second double page was to highlight the colour palette, as nude tones were the primary colours I chose images and models wearing these coloured garments while still ensuring they fit within the trend. I really liked combining cut out models alongside images that still had their background as I found it gave a nice contrast between the two, I decided to used stripes as my colour pallet so that there is a sporty stripe running throughout the entirety of this look with having thicker stripes as the main colours and the thinner ones as accent colours. I also looked into vintage tennis racquets and chose this one as I thought the colour of the wood fitted in with my colour palette and sporty theme. I really like this page but I’m not sure if I could have done with adding some more text or adding a couple of key words as I feel as though its lacking this and could have easily fitted under the colour palette next to the model on the lefts head on either side.

For my thirst double page I wanted to show the key shapes – varsity sweatshirts, relaxed trench coats, oversized blazers paired with retro accessories. I definitely feel like I have got all those key shapes in with my various images including influences of this trend. I feel like out of all my pages this is my most cluttered and probably my least favourite, personally I think I rushed too much on this one and again probably could have done with couple of key words on the page instead of more images of models to keep with the minimalistic, luxury feel of this trend.

On my back cover I used the design I used for my flyer and developed it, I removed the image of the sweatshirt as it wasn’t the most relevant and replaced it with a similar geometric shape to my front cover, I just made this shape a lot bigger so that it wasn’t identical to the one of the front, I believe by doing this it really ties the book together nicely and the other images still relate to the narrative, colour palette and garment style.

In all I am happy with what I’ve produced but there is always room for improvement if I was to develop it again or do the same project, I would definitely research more into title layout, adding more key words or text without over cluttering pages, choosing my models even more carefully to ensure I have enough or to not clutter pages and finally by giving the same amount of time and dedication to each page so that they all come out to a good standard.

The 5 most intriguing storylines of the NFL Draft, ranked

In this year’s unusual draft, we’re keeping an eye on Tua’s stock, the Patriots’ quarterback situation, and the inevitable tech malfunction.

It’s officially draft week! We’re just days away from the oddest draft in my lifetime. I’m pumped, not only because we haven’t had sports in five weeks, but also because I love the draft chaos.

We have four months of agonizing over mock drafts, which will only be ripped up within a few picks in the first round. As you prepare for this Thursday night, and the weekend ahead, here are my top storylines, ranked in order of intrigue.

1. Tua Tagovailoa’s hip

Entering the 2019 season, Tagovailoa was the projected No. 1 draft pick, no doubt about it. His combination of arm talent, field processing, and ability to make something out of nothing are special. However, he injured his hip near the end of Alabama’s season. It was his third injury within a year, this being the worst of the three.

While it appears Tagovailoa is on track with his rehab, two people in the know have told me that teams remain leery of drafting Tua without being able to recheck him themselves. When Justin Herbert goes ahead of Tagovailoa — which would have been completely batshit crazy in September (and still might be) — the hip is the reason why.

2. Which top-10 pick will be the shocker?

2019: Clelin Ferrell, Raiders; Daniel Jones, Giants 2018: Baker Mayfield, Browns 2017: Mitchell Trubisky, Bears

Every year, we see at least one player drafted in the top 10 who was taken higher than we expected. Which team could surprise us this year?

The Giants could be the pick at No. 4 to do something wild, but I don’t think they will. This is a class which has a strong top 11 players, and it would be tough for them to screw it up. The Giants will take either an offensive tackle or Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons.

The Lions at No. 3 could make a shocking selection, like selecting a defensive tackle — maybe Auburn’s Derrick Brown — which wouldn’t be too much of a stretch, but it’s clearly not a need. The Lions drafting a quarterback with the third pick would be a curveball, though. Matthew Stafford still has plenty in the tank, even coming off an injury.

The ultimate shocker would be a team trading up into the top 10 for Jordan Love, who’s the next quarterback in line after Joe Burrow, Tagovailoa, and Herbert. Or better yet, the Jacksonville Jaguars taking Love at No. 9. The Jaguars seem content rolling with Gardner Minshew, and they can secure their tackle of the future with the ninth pick.

Love is way too unproven to waste this pick on him, in my opinion. The comparison to Patrick Mahomes is utterly ridiculous and should be treated as such.

3. New England’s quarterback options

I know it’s not a sexy draft story, but the Patriots’ quarterback situation has important implications in the AFC. The team is talented and can still be successful depending on who’s under center. Currently, New England has Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer in the quarterback room. I can’t imagine the Patriots ride with these two.

They need to make a move this weekend, and it could come earlier than the draft. If the Patriots want Andy Dalton, the Bengals would gladly trade him away as they are taking Joe Burrow with the first pick. This trade could happen on Thursday or Friday.

The Patriots can win 10 games with Dalton. There are more whispers that if Tagovailoa were to fall in the draft, the Patriots could jump up to grab him. That would be amazing. What if the Lions or Dolphins — both staffs led by former Patriots coaches — did their old boss a solid and agreed to a trade? The Patriots could then draft Tagovailoa or Herbert, and suddenly they have a quarterback of the future.

I think we should keep an eye on the Patriots this week.

4. Saturday’s undrafted free agent frenzy

Near the end of the draft, coaches and scouts organize to call possible undrafted free agents and offer them deals to sign with their team. It’s recruiting, but with money. This job is easier when the staffs are together and you can work through a list. You can discuss the potential players, the money offered, and who’s next if options 1-3 disappear.

In which Hogwarts houses would you sort Jude, Noah, Brian and Oscar?

I just posted something about Noah being Slytherin so this is a good time lol.

Noah - SlytherinTime to defend my case here. Noah wants to succeed in art, but more than that, he wants to be a revolutionary. He wants to be the greatest, among the elite. When Noah sees the CSA art classes, he talks about how he recognizes their greatness and wants to be a part of that. When Noah sees/talks to Brian, he talks about how great he is. Noah’s ambition is clear.He also has this way of being very in tune with the world, its colors, animals, etc. and looking at the world and people with wonder, but also being very above-it-all with high-school kids and people in general, except for those he deems…worthy of attention? Idk if I phrased that right, because it’s not that he hates people - quite the opposite. But he’s more concerned with the art and meaning in other humans, and not the superficial stuff. (This point I feel like could point to Ravenclaw too, but overall I say Slytherin.)Finally, Noah tends to resolve situations with cunning, and it’s a point of pride for him. He’s so smug with himself when he wrestles himself out of the fight with Zephyr in the first chapter. Also, the whole business with eavesdropping on summer CSA classes - because he feels he belongs there, he’s entitled.

(I already planned to do a post about Noah, so the rest will be shorter and less in-depth.)

Jude - GryffindorJude is adventurous and courageous (that’s her dominant Se! see my MBTI post about her). She’s very protective of her family/close friends. She’s pretty fiercely set on what she wants, and really stands for it (making the stone sculpture, not clay). (I don’t have much text evidence for Jude right now, if someone wants to hear something more in-depth I’ll do more)

Brian - RavenclawBrian’s got the same sense of wonder as Noah. We don’t get to see it much in the book as he’s not a POV character, but he’s really into the mysteries of astronomy and physics. (I could also see him as Hufflepuff I think…not sure though)

Oscar - GryffindorI’m not that set on this one. But I think Oscar’s pretty spontaneous and adventurous like Jude. He’s also loyal to his friends/family (i.e. Guillermo mostly)
