Bands the modern Lost Boys would listen to
(Feel free to add your own Lost Boys music headcanons!)
Tumblr media
David:
•Father John Misty- FJM writes music for male manipulators and people with religious trauma, of which I believe David is both. His favorite album is Fear Fun because it’s more centered on chaos and atheism, as opposed to FJM’s later albums which are more about love and himself. His favorite song is Fun Times In Babylon because it’s a song about good times in the Biblical archetype of an evil, hedonistic city and that sounds like a fun time to him. He also enjoys listening to You Can Do It Without Me, and God’s Favorite Customer because they feed his god complex. He loves that FJM sings quite a bit about smoking, sex, and death, all things David is totally down with.
•Radiohead- Also music for male manipulators. His favorite songs are Burn the Witch (ironically since the song is about a society plagued by paranoia, but in David’s case it’s not paranoia, he actually IS a supernatural evil creature), Karma Police (because everyone who messes with them WILL get what’s coming to them) and Paranoid Android. One time a guy on the boardwalk said to him, “oh you like Radiohead? Have you heard Creep?” And David ate him almost immediately.
Tumblr media
Dwayne:
•Hozier- I just think Dwayne likes woodsy deep voice folk rock guys so he’d vibe with Hozier. Also I think he cares about female pleasure more than any of the other boys and so does Hozier. His favorite album is Hozier’s self-titled album and his favorite songs on the album are Work song, because of the promise of devotion and love from beyond the grave, Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene, because of the juxtaposition in the song between the pure and the cruel, and Arsonist’s Lullaby, specifically because of the lines “Don’t you ever tame your demons / But always keep them on a leach.” Unlike his chaotic brothers, Dwayne is a bit more calculating in his debauchery, like the main character of that song. He also enjoys NFWMB and Shrike and is eagerly awaiting Hozier’s new album.
•The War on Drugs- Listening to them almost makes Dwayne feel nostalgic for the 80s as The War on Drugs are the self-proclaimed rock n roll synthesists of the century (reminds him of the pre-Michael days🥲). His favorite album is A Deeper Understanding and his favorite song on the album is Pain, a song about losing a struggle against the darker side inside a person.
•Lord Huron- More woodsy folk rock. He’s a romantic at heart so he loves She Lit a Fire, Fool for Love, Ends of the Earth, and The Night we Met. His favorite song by Lord Huron is Meet Me in the Woods, especially the lines at the end: “Follow me into the endless night / I can bring your fears to life / Show me yours and I’ll show you mine / Meet me in the woods tonight.” There’s a strong possibility he’s quoted those lyrics to a meal
Tumblr media
Paul:
•Greta Van Fleet- They’re like a modernized Led Zeppelin, they make him nostalgic. AND they’re four guys with cool jackets in a band together!!! Paul’s like, ‘guys they’re us:)’ He loves how the band’s albums flow and tell epic stories about worlds plagued by war, destruction, and waiting for peace. His favorite album is the Battle at Garden’s Gate, he likes the instrumentals better on that one and he thinks the vocals are more raw and throaty. His favorite song on that album is Stardust Chords, especially for the lines “Even sinners go to drink the wine / Break the bread” reminding him that even as an evil being, he’s still able to indulge in life and community. He also loves Highway Tune, a song about falling with a beautiful girl while driving on the highway (literally him on his motorcycle every night)
•Lady Gaga- Paul loves the Glam pop-rock of early Lady Gaga, he loves how revolutionary her music is for it’s time, and he appreciates her loud and unique style as well. Also, I HC that Paul is bi (he loves people and not genders, he just like me) and listening and dancing to Lady Gaga let’s him express and celebrate his sexuality! He sees no reason to hide who he is. He loves Poker Face, Born this Way and Monster
•I also think he listens to female rappers and R&B artists who are open with their sexuality and sexual pleasure like Janelle Monáe, FKA Twigs, Doja Cat, SZA, and Nicki Minaj he’s all for the sexual liberation of women in the modern era. Especially Janelle Monáe though for her songs about sexual expression and gender identity. Janelle has described herself as “a free ass motherfucker” and Paul vibes with that energy. He loves Americans, a song about subverting traditional American values in favor of loving people for who they are, I Like That, a song about sexuality and self-acceptance, and Make Me Feel, a song celebrating bisexuality. He also enjoys Django Jane, Pynk and Tightrope.
Tumblr media
Marko:
•ALL pop-punk, all of it. But especially Fall Out Boy- He’s not a huge fan of MANIA but he loves the other albums, especially the older stuff. His favorite album is Save Rock And Roll the instrumentals of the songs on that album are his favorite AND Elton John and Courtney Love are featured on the album and he loves them both. His favorite song on the album is Death Valley. He likes their older stuff as well like Sugar We’re Goin Down (he doesn’t care that people think it’s overplayed, it’s a banger) Of All the Gin Joints In The World, Fame < Infamy, and Immortals (for obvious reasons)
•Tally Hall- He’s like, a band that writes songs about existential chaos? Sign him the fuck up. He loves Ruler of Everything, he finds it sort of ironic because the song is about the frivolity of life and inevitability of death, yet for him, death is not inevitable. He also loves Cannibal (obviously) it’s a metaphor for the singer, it is NOT a metaphor for him >:) and Turn the Lights Off, especially the lines “Everybody wants to get evil tonight / But all good devils masquerade under the light.” Marko has the face of an Angel, but is usually depicted as the most brutal of the boys, he literally is a devil that masquerades under the light.
Bonus: All the boys listen to the Killers, for their grunge rock music (their favorite songs are On Top, Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll, and The Man), Muse for their anti-government rock (Their favorites are Uprising, Supermassive Black Hole, and Resistance) and Thrice for the woodsy rock (Their favorite songs are Black Honey, Blood on Blood, and Beyond the Pines). And of course, they listen to all the same bands they listened to in the 80s as well: Mötley Crüe, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Van Halen, Echo & the Bunnymen, Metallica, etc…

Stolen prompt: shuffle your likes or your favorite playlist and post the first ten tracks
I’m doing my on repeat playlist since I don’t trust my actual everything playlist…plus you gotta talk about the song and I can’t do that with the hundreds of random music I saved because I sort of liked it…
The Rain - Smash Into Pieces. One of the few vent songs I play when mommy issues flare up lol…also I always love songs that use the sun as a goal, to finally feel it after years of darkness and cold. It goes hard.
Dreams Without a Future - Sabled Sun. Beautiful piano but it’s the title that really punches me. I can’t articulate it. Just let it sink in. Dreams without a future, hopes with no hope, yearning for what is forever out of reach. Consider that the song is part of a project about a dying, overindustrilaized earth and…
The Blood is Art - Pastelle. This is one of my main ship songs uhhhh so to spare everyone…I really enjoy the singer’s voice, she nails the ethereal and angelic, and hearing it with such angry lyrics and sharp turns in notes is really interesting. And I adore the ending, just haunting vocalizations that are seeped in regret and sorrow…
Pottle - Bengalfuel. For once I cannot wax poetic about an ambient song. It’s just really calming and relaxing, 10/10 noises.
Love You (When You’re a Mess) - Jadudah. found this song during a really lull era where I wasn’t finding any new good music so I became so obsessed. The guitar riffs go crazy. Also I found this song when I was first getting into my stupid ship so 😅
Island - Bengalfuel. This is from the same album as 4 so…still applies. Nice noises, I like it a lot more for having reverb and longer notes.
Wicked Game - Chris Isaak. Quintessential post-hang out song. I use it mainly to relax but still want something more song-like than ambient. Again, I love guitar, and the strumming in this is really something.
Your Eyes Open - Keane. Another thing I really love is unconventional instruments together. So I really enjoy how the piano is used alongside drums and vocals. And again, I really enjoy long notes which the vocals easily supply.
(I skipped a song because it was another BENGALFUEL ALBUM ONE) Into The Unknown - Starset. I actually used to hate this song haha. But then it grew on me. Did you know there’s piano in this too? You can only hear it with good headphones, buried in the chorus. But, starset has my favorite hard rock/metal guitar riffs, hence why they’re like…my #1 band. I paid $140 to get my albums signed 🤨
Secret of Life - Lord Huron. The chorus would help me reach like 20mph on my bike it went so hard. Also reminds me of one of my favorite OCs…I should really go back to writing…oh well.
Tagging…..!!!!!! @umbralundertaker @nightfuryqueen @nightfuryqueen @prussianmemes @prophet60091 @stoplookingformee @imgoingtoputscorpionsinyourmouth and do it if you want even if you’re not tagged Teehee

From the depths of my mind came forth a ship I hadn't thought about in years. Curiosity overtook me and I was suddenly gripped in the throes of Ao3, desperately reading through fanfic and switching back and forth to Tumblr for fanart to reblog – all while I crafted a playlist with every fic I read.
Now I will say, the few nods to the ship is in the title, referencing a very good fanfic series and very loosely referencing the very popular seasons!au in the fandom, really couldn't help myself with that both of these.
(For the four souls that liked my playlist when I first put it out, I hope you like Hijack.)
Let's get started! :D
• Ends of the Earth - Lord Huron
"Headin' out into the unknown,
Wayfairin' strangers and all kinds of danger,
Please don't say I'm going alone,
To the ends of the earth would you follow me?"
This an adventuring song and just hits different. I feel like these two would just go off on a whim on a crazy adventure while the other tags along cause what's life without a bit of fun? It's also find it sweet that maybe just maybe one of them would ask if they could come along. Though it would probably come off like "You're stuck with me now."
Either one of them would most definitely use that phrase.
Of course, when I listen to this song now, I think about Of the Northmost Winds and Skies by xxiiyu. Go read this fanfic if you haven't, it's a wonderful slow burn with a bunch of adventure, magic and pinning for our pairing. I'm going through my second reread of the fanfic due to my enjoyment of it, definitely one of my favorites.
Fic Recs: Forget-Me-Not by UmbrellaMartialGod, Of Tender Years by zoom, Wooed by toopliss_chewtoy
The Fold – Wickerbird
Now, not every song needs to spawn a mini character study so I picked this song mostly for the vibe. The nature imagery is giving "running through a dark forest and feeling nature all around, the co-existence of people, nature and something more magical. I think of a more magical Berk, leaning further into their superstitions and folklore. I'm thinking of a BBC Merlin-esq take on magic, with it being ingrained in the world and some being born with it.
Fics Recs : breath by AnguishofMyLove, Son of a Witch by twiafom, Between Blurred Lines by ThatAwkwardFaeNerd
Black Moss – Johanna Warren
I think about this song constantly. It's the vibe of the song!!! (The lyrics are kinda morbid, but it is they vibe they give off.) It's hard to find the words to type, but I just think these lyrics apply to both Jack and Hiccup. And this song always has me putting the pairing with Jackson Overland who then turns into Jack Frost, for maximum angst.
"And you've been watching me,
You say I emanate some strange magnetic power,
But don't be drawn to me, I maybe be here today
But soon black moss will cover over my dead body."
To potential to write so many dynamics that fit with this! To explore how Hiccup and Jack interact with each other with either Jack knowing Hiccup after becoming Jack Frost or with Hiccup seeing so much of his old friend Jackson Overland with in Jack Frost and trying to figure him out.
"You've been a lot of places,
left me forgotten by your side.
Maybe the feeling's baseless,
But something in me still stirs when I look in your eyes,
'Cause you've been kind to me,
I never quite believed you when you said its over,"
Jack wondering why Hiccup looks at him differently, with something in his eyes that Jack can't put a name to. It makes his heart ache cause Hiccup looks like he needs an answer for something Jack doesn't know how to answer. Something is there, just below the surface of what's between them, if only he could figure it out.
This song, for me, has a lot of potential to have so much good angst. Unfortunately I can not bring myself to write said angst, so I only have my thoughts.
I must mention the series Heart of a Dragon's Soul by SilverlySilence. The fic is also a slowburn that builds on Jack's appearance in Berk, stripped of his magic but still very in-tune with the mystical side of things and he eventually becomes Berk's Druid all while becoming friends with the gang and falling in love with Hiccup along the way on this very wild and tense adventure. Slow, warm and sweet like a cup of hot coco is reading Soul of a Druid.
I would love to read it again, if my heart can take it.
Bigger Than The Whole Sky - Taylor Swift
The lyrics, oh my god, the lyrics for this song. This song ruins me every time. Every time. Alright so this is kinda cheating cause this song also makes me think of Heart of a Dragon when I listen, but hear me out. I don't really know what more to say than read the fanfic and then listen to this song and try not to cry about it, cause that's what's happening to me right now.
"Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye,
You were bigger than the whole sky
You were more than just a short time
And I've got a lot to pine about,
I've got lot to live without,
I'm never gonna meet
What could've been, would've been,
What should've been you."
I'm never getting over this. This is for every fic that has Jack going back in time with bond with Hiccup and the gang, getting friends, getting to see dragons and having people see him only to then get tossed back in his own time left with the sinking feeling of never seeing Hiccup or his new friends again. (Then he finds a way back or Hiccup finds him in the future and they live happily ever after!!)
((Bonus if Jack was sent back while he and Hiccup were find out about the thing between them or had just confessed their feelings for each other.))
Okay little blurb aside - I decided to put it at the end of this playlist cause it starts the journey all over again when Hello My Old Heart starts to play, and I think its fitting and it pulls at my heartstrings.
On a happier note, I'd like to think, they'll meet again. That's the wonders of fanfiction, you get to make up new beginnings and endings for your favorite blorbos.
And I think about these two a bit too much to be healthy, but I love them.
Anyways, thanks for the read and if you happen to listen to this playlist, I hope you enjoy it. Keep on creating and happy writing!!

7 please!!
Hi LT! (I knew you would be here with shrines questions eventually 😂❤️)
7. Where did the title come from?
OH I love this question!! All my titles come from Lord Huron’s Strange Trails album. I went back and forth on giving titles for the future fics, but I’m gonna bc i don’t care about spoilers and also i put too much work into my titles to let them go unheard lmao because who knows how long it’ll take me to finally write all 5 of these.
the series title, build me no shrines, sing me no songs, comes from Way Out There. Specifically this chunk of lyrics: “I belong bodily to the earth / I'm just wearing old bones from those that came first / There are many more flames when mine is gone / They will build me no shrines and sing me no songs” (but honestly the whole song is perfect for the series). The title and the original idea seed sort of came together, but it’s grown into it’s title as I’ve outlined I think. Harry’s doesn’t want to be a saviour. He’s just a kid fighting his hardest in a war that he didn’t start. Also the ‘wearing old bones’ bit is a fun reference to future arthurian shenanigans 👀
the title for the first fic/year three, a sign in the midnight sky, and the second, the heavens collide, both come from Until the Night Turns (“I had a visitor come from the great beyond / Telling me our time in the world is done / And to watch for a sign in the midnight sky” and “I had a vision tonight that the world was ending / And the sky was falling and time was bending / I watched the heavens collide right before my eyes). I won’t say much about the first because I know i said I don’t care about spoilers but that was a bit of a lie, that one’s a very big spoiler lmao but it’s basically just like beginnings and Harry’s world changing. the heavens collide though is Sirius and Regulus!!! they don’t really interact at all in the first fic and finally meet again at the start of the second fic so it’s all about their relationship. plus Harry starts getting visions, so that part is maybe a little on the nose…
into the endless night came from these lyrics from Meet Me in the Woods “I have seen what the darkness does / Say goodbye to who I was / I ain't never been away so long / Don't look back, them days are gone / Follow me into the endless night” which year 5 is a major turning point. It’s really for both Harry and Tom, how they’re both changed by the resurrection, and how there’s no way to undo what’s been done up to this point. Plus it’s a lot of Harry embracing the changes he’s been fighting the last two years.
the year 6 fic, darkness brings evil things, I used The Yawning Grave lyrics “Oh, you fool, there are rules I am coming for you / Darkness brings evil things, oh, the reckoning begins / I tried to warn you when you were a child / I told you not to get lost in the wild / I sent omens and all kinds of signs / I taught you melodies, poems, and rhymes”. I think in my outline this is one of the lowest points in the fic. A betrayal comes to light, the Order is losing, and Harry starts wondering if they’re all going to make it out of the war intact. Also lots more visions this year, so that’s the whole other chunk of lyrics.
the last fic I’ve got planned in the series is tear through the night, and the title comes from The World Ender (“The fair and the brave and the good must die / I seen the other side of living, I know heaven's a lie / I'll tear through the night, and I'll raise some hell / 'Cause I'm the World Ender, baby and I'm back from the dead”) which. just… yeah. I feel like this one explains itself honestly, and I’m not spoiling anything else lmao
That was probably a lot more than you meant when you sent that ask 😅 you stumbled into my secret Shrines title lore, sorry!
ask me things about my fic!

PLEASE provide us your playlist/lore/moodboard for Love Is A River. I'll take anything ya got. :-D
THANK YOU for asking. For anyone reading this other than the asker, she is referring to this fic:
Which, after a bit of a hiatus due to Life Events™, has just been updated with a new chapter!
I don't have an actual moodboard, but you can get the equivalent experience by looking at any stills or GIFs from The Husbands of River Song. I have also commissioned an illustration for the story from the incomparable @illustoryart, and have accordingly also been inspired by their many illustrations of cute cottages and nighttime coziness.
The two most important songs for me in planning and writing have been Now or Never by Alan Doyle, and Anchor by Fortunate Ones.
"Now or Never" has this bit that always makes me think of the end of THORS: "For tonight we are the chosen few/The least that we can do/Is lay our hearts on the line/Oh we're running, we're running/We're running out of time/And I can see the truth/It's coming for me and you/My Love, the moment's here/It's now or never, my dear."
The title of the story comes from "Anchor," and this little piece of that chorus--"Love is a river/It’s gonna run/Time is a sea that drowns everyone"--has been stuck in my head for six months. Not long after I became obsessed with that song, and had firmly established in my mind the water-cycle metaphors of the story, I heard Éilís Kennedy's song Row On, and that also seemed to fit.
Of course, when you are in the middle of writing a story, everything you listen to seems to fit, so the full playlist is mostly just a list of songs I have been listening to, which because I am in my head about this pair, seem to me to be about them. I make no claims to the objective fit of the lyrics of any of these. And the actual playlist I write to also has a bunch of Murray Gold from the Capaldi years, especially, of course, "The Woman He Loves" and "The Singing Towers." The list includes a good number of songs cherry-picked from the many Doctor/River playlists on 8tracks.
Here is the playlist (I don't do Spotify, so sorry for the extra steps):
1 Now or Never/Alan Doyle 2 Anchor/Fortunate Ones 3 Row On/Éilís Kennedy 4 Basket Case/Sara Bareilles 5 A Drop In the Ocean/Ron Pope 6 River/Emeli Sandé 7 Good Company (From "Oliver and Company")/Pianomation 8 Heartbeat/Scouting for Girls 9 Next to Me/Emeli Sandé 10 Start of Time/Gabrielle Aplin 11 Love is All/The Tallest Man On Earth 12 Gravity/Sara Bareilles 13 Stay/Hurts 14 Cherry Wine (Live)/Hozier 15 Home/Vanessa Carlton 16 North/Sleeping At Last 17 The Night We Met/Lord Huron 18 White Flag/Dido 19 Swing Low Sail High/The Wailin' Jennys 20 Work Song/Hozier 21 Poison & Wine/The Civil Wars 22 All I Ask/Adele 23 Boston And St. John's/Great Big Sea
The story has its origins in my own confusion, upon first watching The Husbands of River Song, over why the Doctor doesn't assert his identity more forcefully. It was clear what the Doylist answer is: the continued mistaken identity allows for lots of fun comic moments in the episode.
But to come up with a Watsonian answer I found myself doing a re-watch of River Song's entire run (in the order of her timestream), and developing this head canon about their mutual belief/fear that the other person thought it was a marriage of convenience. And I love nothing more than mutual pining, so I thought I'd write it up, and here we are.

Ranking my favorite bands (warning: this is like 50% folk rock/indie folk)
The Oh Hellos - the only even vaguely religious music I will listen to. Most of their songs are fairly secular, which is probably why I like them, and the more blatantly religious ones are probably closer to “religious trauma” in terms of lyrical content than “praise Jeebus” (there’s a crapton of Bible references though, but they’re used more for metaphor and imagery than religion). Their music is also very optimistic, which isn’t a very common thing with most of the bands on this list; most of their songs kinda give me the feeling of “even if everything’s going downhill, it’ll still get better in the end”.
Lord Huron - if I heard this out of the blue while I was hiking in the middle of the woods, I would be completely unsurprised. Except for Vide Noir, all of their songs give off pristine “middle of nowhere and there’s weird shit happening” vibes. There’s a supernatural element in like 90% of their songs, ranging from “taking a dimension-hopping acid trip” to “dude comes back from the dead to get revenge on an evil real estate dealer who killed his family”. A lot of their songs (or at least their earlier ones; I’m still listening to Long Lost) also tell stories, which is nice.
Death Cab for Cutie - I’d imagine their music sounds like what it’s like to live in a city where it always rains. It’s somewhere halfway between nostalgic and melancholic; my two favorite songs from Thank You For Today are “Northern Lights”, which is more optimistic, and “Gold Rush”, which is entirely focused on the nostalgia that comes from returning to your home town to find it irreversibly changed. Also, one of my favorite fics got its title from “Amputations”, so I can’t really complain.
Imagine Dragons - while I agree with some people that their first three or so albums are their best, the rest of their music isn’t slouching either (”Wrecked” and “Bones” are probably my two favorites of their new songs, and if you haven’t listened to them, YOU SHOULD). While they’re kind of overrated, that’s more due to their popularity than any flaw with their actual music. Also, Dan Reynolds has one hell of a vocal slide, and I can respect that.
Rise Against - punk is only really my genre sometimes, so I tend to gravitate towards these guys’ music because their lyrics are really good and to the point, sometimes to the extent that it’s downright cheesy (the children’s chorus in “Make It Stop”, anyone?). Not that that’s a bad thing, though; it can actually be really effective, such as the aforementioned “Make It Stop”, where the chorus makes it go from a standard punk rock song to straight-up badass. They’re also more...diverse than most punk bands, I guess, in terms of repertoire; some of their music is more acoustic, and I honestly think those songs are amongst their best because of the contrast they draw between the slow instrumentals and the bitter, harsh lyrics.
The Lumineers - I only recently started getting back into these guys’ music and holy shit they’ve gotten good. I listened to most of Cleopatra and their debut album maybe three years ago and just kinda thought “meh, they’re good but they’re not that good”, but their new(ish) album III is *chef’s kiss*. I’m probably biased on that front though, since I’m a sucker for concept albums. They’re more melancholic than most folk rock bands I listen to and they don’t rely as heavily on electronic instruments, which gives them a more down-to-earth tone than the other two folk rock bands listed so far, but they make the kind of music I’d listen to on the rare rainy days where I live (Arizona sucks ass, man).

A RIVER THAT WINDS ON FOREVER
It felt too soon to be going back home. Hours on the back of her bike with the sun beating down on her, and the closer she got to the base – the more familiar the terrain became – the more the feeling grew; like she’d never left in the first place. Approaching the outer perimeter – the path of the patrol routes, the sightline of the nearest lookout point – she slowed down, weaving between gnarled Joshua trees and pale rock formations erupting from the sand, watchful eyes scanning her surroundings through the tinted visor of her helmet.      A trail of dust appeared on the horizon before long, kicked up by an ATV advancing from the left, then another, from the right. Erica slowed to a stop, switching the engine off and kicking the stand down while she waited for them to reach her. Before they came to a full stop in front of her, she pulled her helmet off, breaking into a grin when the first of the drivers recognized her.      “Erica?”    “Josh.” She stepped off her bike, receiving him when he came up to hug her, the pair locked for a moment in an embrace before the woman from the other vehicle took over, flinging her arms around Erica’s neck. “Sadie, good to see you.”      “Your hair! You look so different!”    “Figured a bit of change was in order.” She rubbed at the back of her head, still smiling at them.      “Look at you,” Josh was almost laughing. “Couple months in the city and you’ve got piercings all over. You get any tattoos?”      She shrugged. “Not yet.”      “And the others?” Sadie looked hopeful, grabbing the brim of her cap and wiggling it a little to adjust it. Her dark hair was tied into a bun at the nape of her neck, but a strand loosened with the movement, blowing across her face in the dry breeze.      “Forgotten about us already?” Josh smirked, quirking an eyebrow.    “No; I’m here for work.”      “How long are you staying?”    “I’m not.”      Both their smiles faded, disappointment and something else sapping some of the warmth from their expressions. Erica pretended not to notice.      “Right. Of course.” Sadie returned to her ATV for a comm, freeing it from a small bag placed on the side of the seat. “Gate, this is lookout four. Erica’s here.” She spoke into it, releasing the button on the side while she waited for a response.      “Copy.” There was a pause. “All clear, Sadie. I’ll let Cira know.”      Fuck. Erica closed her eyes, slowly breathing in, then put her helmet back on and straddled her bike. Josh had seen her expression, but thankfully knew better than to ask, returning to his ATV with a nod and a polite but rather unconvincing smile. Helmet back on, Erica mirrored the nod, flipping up the stand with the heel of her boot and starting the engine, leaving the two of them to return to their posts as she traveled on, trying not to clench her jaw too hard, or let her knuckles pale around their grip on the handlebars.
The base was nestled in a flat between a loose circle of towering bluffs, a high wall wide enough to walk along the top of filling the gaps between the crags. Steel walkways clung to the insides of the steep cliffs, connecting the stretches of wall to form a perimeter around the entire compound, high enough that when walking it, one could see clear to the other side. Coming up on the gate, she saw two figures atop it – one on either side of the barrier, each carrying a rifle – silhouetted against the sun. She didn’t bother trying to see who it was, nor did she get the chance, because before she’d even reached the gate doors, the left one opened, pushed along by Grant and… Erica drew in a breath, rolling in through the opening on momentum alone before pulling to the side and parking her bike out of the way of — but still near — the inside of the gate. She took her sweet time switching off the engine, taking her helmet off, rummaging through her small backpack before hooking the strap over her shoulder, getting off the bike, and only when she couldn’t stall anymore without looking ridiculous, she turned around to face the shadow she’d been keeping an eye on the entire time, stretching across the sand underneath her feet.      Another hug, firmer, longer, but no comment on her hair, or the silver rings in her ears and septum.      “It’s good to see you.”    “You too, Mom.” Erica pulled back, carefully breaking the embrace to look down at her mother’s solemn face. “How is everyone?”      “Surviving.” Her mother began walking, and she followed, throwing a small wave and a halfhearted smile over her shoulder at Grant as she went. “One of the solar panels has lost connection with the inverter; we’ll need new parts for it as soon as Frances and Lionel figure out what the problem is — and we’re low on antibiotics, but otherwise the base is operational.”      Erica opened her mouth, stopped herself from asking if there was anything she could do, and nodded instead. Nobody was dead. Sick. Hurt. At least not badly enough to be worthy of mention in her mother’s eyes. “Listen, I need to talk to Moira. Could you… not tell Allegra and Marcel or Nadir that I’m here? If you see them. I don’t really…” she turned her head, looking around as if Gia and Yousef’s parents would suddenly appear, now that she had mentioned them, “have time to catch up.”      “Will you stay and eat?”    “Maybe. I don’t know.”      “I’ll be in AG.” Her mother peeled off without acknowledging her request. “Find me before you leave.” Stopped in her tracks, Erica drew a quiet sigh, then headed in the opposite direction, towards the building that housed the lab.
Placed in the shade of one of the crags and thoroughly air-conditioned, the lab and infirmary was the coolest building in the compound, with its own set of generators and additional backup power on top of that again, should anything go wrong. Failsafe upon failsafe. The hallway she stepped into when she came through the door was dark and quiet, void of people; not unusual, so she pressed on, undeterred. Through another door towards the far left end of the hallway, the lab opened in front of her — just as dimly lit, save the blue sheen cast over the wall to her right by the UV-lamps that warmed the rows of various plants there, encased in glass. She still didn’t see anyone, so she continued past an open doorway into the next room, where she finally spotted the back of the woman she was looking for, silhouetted by the monitor at her desk.    “Moira. Why’s it so dark in here?”
Tumblr media
With a start, the brown-haired woman turned around, mouth open about to reply before she saw who had spoken and froze for a second, a blank look of surprise lingering on her face.      “Erica.” She stood up, rubbing her eye as she approached, lab coat swishing around her legs. Her glasses were perched on top of her head, half-tangled into the mess of greying curls she’d piled there and fastened with a tie; a strand clung to them when she tried to pluck them free, and she began impatiently trying to disentangle it, gaze focused on the hinge it’d gotten caught in. “The panels… getting fixed. Generator’s running the important stuff. Lionel said it probably wouldn’t be long, so–” she got her glasses free and hooked them into the pocket on her chest, “–I’m not wasting fuel on lights. What are you doing here?” A sigh heaved her shoulders. The woman’s hands were planted firmly on her hips.    “I need poison. As small a dose as possible, and as fatal as possible in as little time as possible.”      “Okay… I don’t really have that kinda stuff on hand. Method of administration?”    “Oral.” Erica made a face. “I assume.”      “I can make a tincture, but it’s gonna take a couple of days if you want it to be potent.”    “Days? You really don’t have anything else? Some drug that could be lethal in high doses?”      “No guarantee it’d result in death, no. It’s also not what you would define as quick.” Moira paced around, opening a small fridge filled with vials. “The only thing I have is a bit of snake venom, but that needs to be injected. We also need it to make antivenom.”    “Shit.” Erica, about to reach for her phone, remembered that it was packed away on her bike, switched off. No cell traffic in or near the base. No phones. Just radios. A few months in the city, and getting anything arranged without one was already a pain in the ass, where she’d never once minded it before. “Do both. What do you need?”      Moira shrugged. “Nothing I don’t already have. Hey— where are you going?”    “To replace your venom.” She was already through the first doorway.      “Rattlesnake!” Moira called out after her, the clinking of lab equipment sounding between her words, “The Mojave, not the diamondback!”
In AG, her mother was walking between rows of cabbage with a spray bottle of organic pesticide, a wide-brimmed hat hiding her face from the sun.    “Mom,” she called out, pacing closer along the edge of the square plot, boots never touching the darker soil that had been placed there.      “Yes?” her mother didn’t stop her work; didn’t look up.    “Looks like I’ll be staying for a couple days. Have you seen Locke?”      “If you want to help, go to the panels, Erica.”    “I need to do something for Moira first. Have you seen him?”      “I haven’t — but you know where to look.”      She nodded, a single dip of her chin. “I’ll see you tonight, then.” Two days of living in the past, for a client she’d never worked with before. Money is no object, she thought stubbornly as she headed off in search of the only man she’d trust to wrangle a deadly snake, wondering idly if Josh and Sadie would be too in whatever huff she’d put them in to keep her company later, maybe share some moonshine. She’d need it — especially if she was staying the night with her mother.

ok so i wanna give a lil in-depth explanation for my 1917 playlist?  i finally shared it but now let’s talk about it.
it starts off with “1917″ from the soundtrack, think of this as the title sequence of the playlist.
then we go into Jos Slovick’s wonderful rendition of “I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger” because as the only song in the film, i wanted to be first on the playlist.
next is “epiphany” by taylor swift, i don’t think i need to explain that one.
(scattered throughout the playlist is the original score by thomas newman, this keeps the storyline oriented through the playlist and it’s a stunning! soundtrack so)
“savior complex” by phoebe bridgers.  both scho and blake.
“long lost” by lord huron bc the lyrics are how i imagine scho feels in the beginning, so wholly exhausted by the war.  especially the first verse “Leave me where the light pours down / Through the trees like rain / Let it wash over me like a flood / Let it ease my pain / Let it drown me”
“be still” by the killers. i love this song.  i imagine these lyrics being sung to both scho and blake, i will probably make a longer post relating the lyrics to 1917.
“bells in santa fe” by halsey.  even suggested this one (thank u!) and it fits so well.  sonically it reminds me a bit of some motifs in the soundtrack, but also the repetition of the lyrics “All of this is temporary” and “It's not a happy ending” are !!!
“this is me trying” by taylor swift.  again, prob don’t need to explain this one but scho and blake really are just trying their best but damn all of this is so. hard. to get through.
“ends of the earth” by lord huron.  both scho and blake at different points are being led by the other, through no man’s land, through the mine, through to meet death (the end of the earth?) it just. yeah. feelings.
“i will follow you into the dark” by miya folick.  i love this song, but specifically her version, it’s so much more haunting (it’s originally death cab for cutie).  and just, when blake guides scho through the collapsing mine shaft and tunnel while scho can’t see, while he follows him through the dark, but also all of the lyrics i can’t even pick a line rn
“not dead yet” by lord huron.  uhhh well at this point in the film they’re both still alive.
“safe & sound” by taylor swift.  will comforting tom as uh, he, uhhhhh yeah.
“drop dead” by holly humberstone.  yeah so, both of them are not still alive at this point in the film.
“the parting glass” by hozier.  i love this traditional song a lot, some parts feel like tom leaving, heading to the beyond, some lyrics feel more like will having to leave tom’s body.
“in the bleak midwinter” by worcester cathedral choir.  yes i have a lot of feelings about tom’s death scene.  the lyrics are a poem by christina rossetti (who i love).  i honestly got the idea to add this to the playlist from tommy in peaky blinders (this is tied to his experience in france in the war and death so, it fits ok)
“headstones and landmines” by lizzy mcalpine.  this is during the period of time when will is knocked out, i imagine words and thoughts floating through his unconscious mind?
“the jumblies by edward lear” by dorothy rose gribble.  i listened to basically every recording of this poem on spotify and i liked her’s the best.  the way she says “they went to sea in a sieve they did, in a sieve they went to sea” reminded me quite a lot of how george said it in the film (i need someone to get george to do a recording of this whole poem pls i love his voice and the rhythm he recites the jumblies in the film)
“at sea” by lord huron.  in a sieve they went to sea.
“generous heart” by maya hawke.  i love maya’s album but relating to the film: scho has such a generous heart. he shares what little food he has with blake. age before beauty. the way he is honest with blake as he dies. when he gives all his food and the milk to lauri and the baby. but i put this song here because of the moment between scho and baumer. he tries to give the boy a chance to let them each go their own ways. also in my hc, he only chokes baumer till he passes out, he doesn’t kill him unnecessarily.
“all i want” by kodaline.  i WILL be making a whole separate explanation for this song but for now, just, ugh, listen to the lyrics, it is as if scho and blake are speaking to each other. “take my body” takes on a whole new meaning. it’s scho floating down the river thinking this.
“cherry blossom” by czarina frost, sam blakelock. blake
“ICU” by phoebe bridgers.  I've been playing dead / My whole life / And I get this feeling / Whenever I feel good / It'll be the last time / But I feel something / When I see you now
“i am a poor wayfaring stranger” by e v e n.  we already heard jos’s version and i love the production of even’s, and she helped me finialize a bit of the playlist so.  go listen to their music!
“my own soul’s warning” by the killers.  lyrically, this feels like it could be the inner monologue of all of the characters in 1917 at one point or another.
“i will be back one day” by lord huron. scho @ his family.
“i know the end” by phoebe bridgers.  even pointed out that the pathway of this song runs parallel to this film and that is so true.
“in memorium” by laura rossi, the chamber orchestra of london. from an album of classical music inspired by ww1 poems.
and we end with 1917 again, the credits, if you will.

to the ends of the earth
Chapter Summary: Phil, on devotion and eternity and the cruelty of human mortality. (Title from "Ends of the Earth" by Lord Huron.) Chapter Warnings: Musings about character death, but nobody dies. Word Count: 583 Words
Also on AO3 here!
Techno is beautiful as he sleeps. Moonlight casts faint shadows over the deep, ever-present bruising under his eyes (from his abject refusal of anything like a normal sleep schedule) and the cherry-blossom pink of his hair, curled slightly from his braid. His chest rises and falls steadily, a rhythm Phil has relied on to fall asleep more easily than any herbal tea mix on the planet. He’s drooling.
And Phil can hardly manage to breathe, aching with the sheer weight of it all.
He’s skimmed a hand through the deep starry night that sits under the waking world, spread his wings in the endless dark, shot rockets so far below that he never heard them explode. He’s stumbled into the deepest parts of the Nether and fixed tears in his haori sitting cross-legged on the bench swing there. He’s found oceans at the end of the world and flower fields at the bottom of the ocean and the sort of beauty that comes from loving hundreds of people and knowing there’s billions more he’ll never get to meet.
And Techno could live to be a hundred and fifty and they still wouldn’t have enough time. Phil has known him for some twenty years, followed him into a mountain made of ice and lit it up with paper lanterns, helped him take over the world (and what a petty thing, and how gratifying that Techno took it just as lightly as Phil), built him home after home, but he will never be able to show him all of these things, the endless devotion to living held in the world beyond the tip of his axe. It’s a time limit that’s too horrible to bear, and he’s taken on its weight over and over again but tonight, tonight he’s certain it will crush him.
He splays his hand out over Techno’s stomach, feeling him breathe under Phil’s fingers. His life is hardly going to last the blink of an eye, but Phil is convinced in that moment that when he passes that’ll be it, it’ll be the last crack before Phil shatters, and he’ll just have to go off somewhere to sleep until eternity (a collar tied to a leash that never pulls, just hangs grimly at his back) finally comes to collect him. It’s too much, knowing that Techno deserves every inch of beauty this universe has to offer and that Phil will never be able to convey the depth of it to him within the few decades he’s been allotted.
Techno shifts with a faint sniffle, one finger coming up to brush under Phil’s eye. He hadn’t realized he was crying.
“Bad dream?” Techno asks, voice still raspy with sleep.
“Something like that,” Phil answers softly, and allows Techno to pull him into his chest. He refuses to burden Techno with the weight of his own mortality—he carries so much already.
Tonight, Techno is warm and soft in the way only Phil gets the privilege of experiencing. Phil lets out a shuddering breath and tucks his head into Techno’s chest, trying to time his breathing to his heartbeat.
It’s cruelly fast, in the grand scheme of things, but tonight it’s slow. Slow and steady, a gentle reminder not to spurn the gift Phil has been given now. That he has Techno now, and he’ll have him when he wakes, and eternity is a problem to leave to tomorrow’s Phil.
He can have tonight in peace, he tells himself, and closes his eyes.

1, 2, 3, 9, 16, 26 for the Loki meme~
already answered 1 and 2! and I...meant to answer this a long time ago and it kept getting buried in my drafts.
3. Did someone refer him to you or you found him on your own? A little of both, I guess. @erlkonigstochter watched the first Thor movie before I did and told me it had a quiet overlooked nerd vs. loud popular jock thing going on, so I was kind of predisposed to sympathize with Loki even before I watched it. and then of course I saw it and it turned out Loki was goddamn tragic and also fuck Odin because WHO FUCKING DOES THAT WHEN THEIR KID IS ABOUT TO COMMIT SUICIDE, HOLY SHIT (yeah overidentifying with Loki in multiple ways has always been part of why I love him). I can’t remember if I properly got into the fandom as such until after Avengers, but I definitely didn’t start trying to write my own fic before then, and fandom was very much a feedback loop--gifsets and meta made me notice things I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise (like...I don’t think it even occurred to me that Loki was probably tortured before being sent to Earth until I saw others discussing it and pointing out the onscreen evidence, and then of course it was obvious) and have feelings about those things, and fanart gave me more feelings, and so did fic, which also gave me various ideas. so in the absence of fandom, I think it’s safe to say I still would’ve liked Loki a lot, but it’s hard to say if I would’ve gotten in so deep.
9. Do you have a Loki song list? Answered before but answering again because I want to share a few! currently I have 68 songs on my general Loki playlist, which I rarely listen to because I’m a baby and some of them make me too sad. but! I also have a handful near the end that I’ve been meaning to post as a mini-fanmix, because it’s actually not terribly sad and it’s about a very specific topic: post-IW/Endgame Loki recovering in New Asgard because fuck canon actually, and it’s kind of bittersweet because trauma’s a bitch and he’s going to be dealing with all this shit for a long time but also he’s alive to deal with it and so is Thor and they’ll help each other heal because again, and I cannot stress this enough, fuck canon. so far it’s got: “No Monsters,” Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire “Tender Offerings,” First Aid Kit “Falling Slowly,” The Swell Season “Saturn,” Sleeping At Last “Never Quite Free,” The Mountain Goats, which really kinda sums up the whole concept and then some combination of “In Harmony,” “In the Silence,” “Going Home,” or the original Icelandic versions of them, all by Ásgeir. these are all extremely gorgeous songs by the way, the whole list, and most of them are even available on Freegal, if your library has that.
oh and the other super-specific mini-mix is about Loki’s time in the Void, and so far the only one on there that’s a sure thing is “Meet Me in the Woods” by Lord Huron (possibly also “The Yawning Grave” by same). other possibilities include “The Colour out of Space” by Matt Pond PA, “The Cold, the Dark & the Silence” by Sea Wolf, “The Void” by Metric, and “Was There Nothing?” (or its Icelandic version) by Ásgeir, but tbh most of those are based on the title more than the lyrics. also it’s sad.
16. How would rate yourself as a Loki fan from 1-10? (1- casual,  10-stan™)  I’m gonna be totally honest here and say that I probably have to admit to 10. I mean--I’ve written a bunch of fic. I’ve made multiple custom figures. I’ve cosplayed five different Loki outfits (all fairly straightforward, but still). and of course, I have an army, which doesn’t even include all the other Loki stuff I have like prints and t-shirts. all of that speaks to a certain level of fanatical dedication, you know?
26. What’s your dream team for Loki? JUST LIKE. A FRIEND. LITERALLY ANY FRIEND, AS LONG AS THE FRIEND IS GOOD FOR HIM I’M REALLY NOT FUSSY but also I always wanted him to team up with the Avengers, you know, the thing that would’ve happened in IW/Endgame if the Russos weren’t such fucking hacks? could’ve even led to working with Nebula! that would’ve been extremely cool but nooooo, we can’t have anything nice! but uh, for things that might actually happen still, teaming up with Wanda would be fun. teaming up with Dr. Strange could also be cool if they both learn to respect each other. so yeah, if all three team up in Dr. Strange 2, I will be just...beside myself.

Stellis Superis, or “By the Stars Above”
A Rossier-in-aesthetics imageset for @theterrorbingo square “I will always come to you,” inspired by the brilliant “Rossier but it’s all Lord Huron playlist” by @jamesclarkross titled “By the stars above, I know we were in love.”
One image for each song, with my favorite selected lyric translated into Latin (original English in caption), with details about the translations beneath the cut!
1. Ends Of The Earth (Theme)
There's a world that was meant for our eyes to see.
Est orbis videndus ab oculis nostris. = “There is a world that is meant to be seen by our eyes.” (The word used here for “world” is orbis, meaning the world in the sense of the round globe, reflecting the exploratory work that Sir James Clark Ross and Francis Crozier did together at both poles.)
2. Brother (Before the expedition)
How many miles have we wandered, under the sky?
Quot milia sub caelo vagati sumus? = “How many miles under the sky have we wandered?” (The phrase “we wandered” is translated as vagati sumus from the verb vagor, meaning to rove or to ramble, in a largely positive sense – think “Not all those who wander are lost.”)
3. Way Out There (Francis leaving with Franklin)
I’ve been drifting in a land that time forgot.
In terra cuius tempus oblitum fluo. = “In a land which time forgot, I drift.” (There’s a contrast here between terra (“land”) and fluo, meaning “I drift,” but also “I flow, I fall away, I vanish,” a Latin euphemism for death.)
4. The Night We Met (James missing Francis)
I don’t know what I’m supposed to do, haunted by the ghost of you.
Quid faciam nescio concelebratus umbra tua. = “What should I do? Haunted by your shadow, I do not know.” (The Latin language doesn’t have a specific word that corresponds to the English verb “to haunt,” but here, the term “concelebratus” means “haunted” in the sense of “thronged,” or “enlivened,” or “animated,” or “filled,” with some person or spirit, in a way both positive (think “celebrated”) and negative (“overwhelmed”); here, literally by Crozier’s umbra (“shadow”), a common term for ghost.)
5. Frozen Pines (The start of the search)
I am ready to follow you even though I don’t know where.
Quo nesciam me tibi sequendo praeparo. = “Although I know not where, I prepare myself to follow you.” (The grammatical implication of “I prepare myself to follow you” is that of changing one’s self for a specific purpose, readying the soul as one might equip a sailing-ship for a long journey.)
6. When The Night Is Over (The search continues, worrying intensifies)
Will I hold you when the night is over?
Esne cadente mihi complectendus limite noctis? = “Are you meant to be held by me, when the boundary of night falls?” (The grammatical construction here parallels the quote from the first song, “There's a world that was meant for our eyes to see,” by using the passive periphrastic, a fancy term that implies duty, obligation, or fate – a world meant to be seen, a person meant to be embraced – but here it’s a question, because Ross is beginning to doubt.)
7. Lonesome Dreams (The search continues, hope fades)
I’ve been dreaming of a lonesome world where I’m lost and I’m on my own.
Avia in quibus solus errem somniavi. = “I have been dreaming up pathless places in which I wander alone.” (The word avia is doing a lot of work here, meaning “a [place or world] that has no paths, that is barren, lonesome.” Note also that the verb for “to wander” is not vagor, as above, but errem, from erro, meaning “I wander, I make a mistake, I err.”)
8. In The Wind (James returns alone)
I have passed my days by the sound of your name.
Aetatem mihi nominis tui imagine habui. = “I have spent my lifetime with the echo-image of your name.” (Instead of literally translating the word “sound,” here I’ve chosen the Latin term imagine from the noun imago – from which we have the English term “image” – because imago carries a burden of meanings from “echo” and “likeness,” to “ghost” and “grave-mask.”)
9. The Ghost On The Shore  (The Spectral Arctic; Franklin Expedition confirmed dead)
Lie where I land and let my bones turn to sand.
Quo obii iaceam ossaque saburra fiant. = “Let me lie where I have fallen, and let my bones become sand.” (The term used for sand here, saburra, is a rarer term than the more standard options, and it refers specifically to sand used on boats as ballast; the material that weighs down a ship, now sunk to the sea-bed, not to be recovered.)
