The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Wow, what a game. I probably could not have chosen better for my first game of 2025.

At first, I wasn't certain how I would feel about a Zelda game with indirect combat, but Echoes delivered on its premise with aplomb. I felt like it was the perfect evolution of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom's systems where every tool had multiple uses. The wonderful thing about Echoes is that you have so many tools with so much utility that you can basically do whatever you want with creative enough Echo use.

Of course, for me, that meant spamming Deku Baba for combat for basically the entire first quarter of the game. It got to the point where, even though I'd long since stopped using it, Deku Baba still took SECOND PLACE on my most used Echoes list. Crazy. (Trampoline and the all-powerful Water Block were the other two.) I regret nothing, though. Spamming Deku Baba like I was twerking at the enemy was far more satisfying than it had ANY right to be.

On the subject of the Water Block, can I say that thing needs a NERF? It feels like once you have access to Water Block, you can get literally anywhere you need that's either a certain number of blocks away or, even better, along any ceiling or up any wall, as the only limitation Water Block has is that one of the connecting blocks is touching an existing piece of terrain. And since you have access to the third dimension, you can snake your chain of water blocks any which way you need. It's completely busted, and the only reason Flying Tile even keeps being useful is that it can cross huge gaps that are too long even for the Water Block. Long live Water Block.

The only real flaw I can come up with for the Echo system is that the list of echoes displayed upon holding right is a single line almost as long as Hidetaka Miyazaki's swamp boner. It should honestly have been a grid, like it is in the pause menu, or even better, organized by category.

Complementing the Echo system is a mechanic wherein Zelda uses Tri to control the movement of another entity—item, enemy, obstacle. Sometimes I would forget this exists, but that’s my own fault. It has two functions: moving the target to match Zelda’s movement, which saw plenty of use, or moving Zelda to match the target’s, if the target is mobile...which saw next to none. It was tremendously underutilized. The only time I actually had to use it was when it was first introduced. Still, it was an interesting skill; I just wish it had been expanded on a little more.

The boss design in this game is ACE. Echoes of Wisdom sees some of the most creative and fun boss designs I've seen in Zelda in a long time, and that's including Tears of the Kingdom's high-tier bosses. (I’m not sure any of them beat out that Ganondorf fight, though. That was *sick.*) That being said, creative use of Echoes does kind of make the bosses a little too easy, but that's not necessarily a problem for most players.

I truly believe Echoes of Wisdom stands up with the greatest 2D Zeldas. A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening should be proud to stand with it. I would PREFER a less bobbleheaded art style, but I wouldn't mind if Zelda games continued on a path like this--less focused on Link necessarily cleaving a bloody path through to Ganon as if Hyrule depended on it and more on unique and interesting mechanics like Echoes.

Is it really the Downfall timeline if there's smoothies?

Lore discussion under the cut. I understand many Zelda fans do not care for overall lore or even like the idea of a timeline, but I am not one of those fans. At the core of me is a lore nut and I will be loring. And nutting.

LORE DISCUSSION ---- Spoilers ahead!

The Eldin Temple's boss threw me for a loop!

I know it's just an Echo, but the fact that it appears is still significant. It means Volvagia was still alive to BECOME an Echo by the time Null started breaking out of its cage. Where was Volvagia during, let’s see… A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, the Oracle games, A Link Between Worlds, and Tri-Force Heroes? Does Volvagia’s presence mean OoT Link didn't even make it as far as the Fire Temple in the Downfall timeline? That doesn’t exactly jive with my personal theory for the existence of the Downfall timeline, but the fact is Volvagia’s echo exists in Echoes. (It COULD simply be that they want to start making Volvagia a recurring boss like Gohma, but with how creative the bosses in this game are, and that Volvagia is a single individual while Gohma is a species, I somehow doubt that.)

Echoes of Wisdom seems to have been placed after Tri-Force Heroes and before the Decline of Hyrule leading to the first two games. Given that it explicitly takes place in the Downfall timeline, it makes me wonder what Null’s deal is in the Child and Adult timelines. It clearly must still exist as it was there at the very beginning, long before even Skyward Sword, so it would have survived into each timeline as well.

That it takes place after A Link to the Past, however, is blatant just in its geography, as a couple of AlttP’s dungeons can be seen as ruins in Echoes of Wisdom. Notably, the ruins of the entrance to the Desert Palace is the site of a minor rift that Zelda must explore as part of the Gerudo story in Echoes. Very cool. I love that shit. I LOVE that shit.

Also, in Eastern Hyrule, the Eastern Palace makes its third appearance as the Eastern Temple. Good Stuff! I love Zelda.

That about sums up my thoughts about Echoes of Wisdom. At least for now. I might update this later. Who knows?

Next up is Link’s Awakening. I’ll likely finish Lies of P first, though.

And why does it even matter what the fandom is doing if you like the character enough? Like I LOVE Price, he is one of THE comfort characters I have, and I HATE the interpretations this fandom pushes towards him.

You're saying that his character only falls into this category and nothing else in your eyes, but what the truth is that his characterization is much deeper than just 'daddy taking care of reader' or whatever filth that is.

I sat curled on the couch with a blanket drawn tightly around me, staring at the modest decorations I’d strung up days ago when Alhaitham first left for Akademiya business. The lights, the strings of ribbon—they felt out of place here, like foreign embellishments in a world that had no meaning for them.

Christmas. Once upon a time, it had been everywhere—woven into every light, every note of music, every breath of winter air. It wasn’t as though I’d celebrated Christmas extravagantly but the absence of it here made the ache of displacement settle heavy in my chest. Even if I’d only half-participated in the holiday back then, its laughter and warmth had always been a comforting constant.

Teyvat moved without pause. The winds of Mondstadt whipped across snow-buried plains, Sumeru’s ever-shifting leaves played on the breeze and Liyue’s lanterns flickered against a fading sky. It was timeless and unchanging, as if the universe was indifferent to the celebration I longed for. But like the decorations I’d strung up, Christmas had no place here. And in that knowledge, my homesickness deepened, the distance between my old world and this one stretching farther.

Suddenly, the door creaked open, and I startled, my gaze snapped to the figure entering. Alhaitham’s silhouette was outlined against the dim light of Teyvat’s evening and in his hand was a small neatly wrapped package, the paper a rich shade of crimson, tied with thin, silver silk that shimmered softly in the light.

“You’re back,” I mustered, rising slightly from my seat.

“I am,” His gaze swept over me, and a crease formed between his brows. “You look troubled.”

I offered a fragile smile, “Just thinking about… you know.” I trailed off, eyes drifting to the window where whimsy unbeknownst to me twinkled in the inky expanse above.

Without preamble, he extended the gift toward me. “Here.”

I blinked in surprise, looking from his hand to his face. “What’s this for?”

“Isn’t it customary to exchange gifts for… Christmas?”

The word fell from his lips tentatively, as though testing its weight. His eyes searched mine for any sign that he had mispronounced it. Then, a bittersweet ache unfurled in my chest.

“You… remembered?”

He remembered. Even in passing, even if I hadn’t explained it in detail, he had remembered. And more than that, he had acted on it.

“You mentioned it once,” he replied, the faintest hint of awkwardness colouring his tone. “I don’t fully understand the tradition, but it seemed important to you.” He paused, then added softly, “I thought it might remind you of home.”

My fingers brushed the wrapping paper, tracing its edges as a quiet laugh escaped me. “You didn’t have to go to all this trouble.”

“It matters to you. If it makes this place feel less foreign, then it’s no trouble at all.” He spoke as though his sentiment was the simplest truth in the world.

I bit my lip, his words filling the emptiness in my heart like the flickering flame of a candle in the dark. Slowly, I unwrapped the gift, the paper falling away to reveal a delicate glass ornament, its shape a perfect, crystalline star. It caught the lamplight, scattering prisms across the room like a reflection of something celestial—like fragments of a distant sky.

“It’s not much,” he almost sounded apologetic, “but stars seem to hold significance in your world’s imagery for this holiday.”

I stared down at the gift, my vision blurring as the sting of tears welled unexpectedly. The ornament trembled in my grasp, held close to my chest as the first drops slipped free, unstoppable. “Thank you,” I whispered, so softly it felt like the words might dissolve and me with it.

Watching me closely, a shadow of concern crossed his face, as though uncertain whether he had made me uncomfortable. “You’re crying…” His voice wavered, caught somewhere between a statement and a question.

I wiped at my tears, smiling through them. “They’re happy tears,” I told him. “I really needed this.”

Alhaitham sat beside me with the same calmness that defined his every action. The silence now brimmed with a bubbling warmth, deeply felt like a steadfast anchor.

“If you’d like,” he started, “then we’ll celebrate it. Here, every year. However you wish.”

His offer settled gently. “I would like that,” I said, already untethered.

Alhaitham nodded, brushing his hands against mine, the touch so tender it seemed to carry a promise with a three word phrase hanging in the air. As the glass star shimmered between us, the ache of homesickness began to ebb. In its place bloomed a sense of belonging.

A realisation that home was here. Home was now. And it had been all along.

AO3 search tool is here! Use page 1 to search scraped fics by username. Use page 2 to search by work ID (which you'll need to do if you're looking for an anonymous work).

In case this post breaches containment: this is a tool that only has access to the work IDs, titles, author names, and chapter counts of the scraped fics for this most recent scrape discovered in April 2025. There is no other work data in this tool. It originally also showed the number of hits at the time of the scrape, but I had to remove that since it was really slowing down the tool's loading. This never had the content of your works loaded to it, only info to help you check if your works were scraped.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the cost to host the tool! I appreciate you so so so much. As of this edit, I've received more donations than what I paid to make this tool so you do NOT need to keep sending money. (But I super appreciate everyone who did help fund this! I just wanna make sure we all know it's all paid for now.)

The mobile view only works if you have the Power BI mobile app, which is kind of a silly thing for you to download if this is the only report you will ever load. The best alternative I can find is enabling screen rotation and turning your phone sideways. It's a litttttle easier to use like that.

At this time, I believe most of the fics that were missed were caused by deficiencies in the scraper's code. I will continue to research on that, and you guys will be the first to know if I find anything that seems to be an effective anti-scraping measure.

Some FAQs below the cut:

"What do I need to do now?": At this time, the main place where this dataset was shared is disabled. As far as I'm aware, you don't need to do anything, but I'll update if I hear otherwise.

"I don't want to know!": This tool is 100% optional. If you don't want to know, simply don't click the link. You are totally welcome to block me if it makes you feel more comfortable.

"Can I see the exact content they scraped?": Nope, not through me. I don't have the time to vet every single person to make sure they are who they say they are, and I don't want to risk giving a scraped copy of your fic to anyone else. If you really want to see this, you can find the info out there still and look it up yourself, but I can't be the one to do it for you.

"Are locked fics safe?": Not safe, but so far, it appears that locked fics were scraped less often than public fics. The only fics I haven't seen scraped as of right now are fics in unrevealed collections, which even logged-in users can't view without permission from the owner.

"My work wasn't a fic. It was an image/video/podfic.": You're safe! All the scrape got was stuff like the tags you used and your title and author name. The work content itself is a blank gap.

"It's slow.": Unfortunately, a 13 million row data dashboard is always going to be on the slow side. I think I've done everything I can to speed it up, but it may still take up to 10 minutes to load. It's faster if you can use desktop, but it should work on your phone too.
