I had been wondering about this line from Sweet Dream for awhile now.

"My father, my universe,

Take away the weak and small me."

It never seemed to really connect to anything. Belief never made any of our cast less helpless, let alone our original singer here, Sua.

But with the recent comic, I have thoughts on this.

Mizi doesn't see Sua as beneath her innately, is the thing. Sua is an equal - equal anatomy, equal heat, equal passion. She's even dressed in the outfit Mizi would later wear for Round 1.

But the dress fits more loosely on Sua than it does Mizi. Sua is also, quite literally, beneath her. Mizi knows she could "crush" her. Because of the way they have been taught "love", there is this interesting juxtaposition in the way they see each other and the way they act.

Sua is complacent - micromanaged and constantly nitpicked for the slightest things she does out of line. She doesn't put up any resistance, because there's no point. Sua is Mizi's protector, but it's because Mizi is Sua's only form of comfort. Protecting Mizi protects her sanctuary. Sua can feel genuinely grateful that Mizi doesn't get dragged around like her, while still feeling somewhat resentful. Sua finds strength in devoting herself to Mizi.

Mizi is bitterly aware of her own helplessness. If she is "cute" or "pretty" or "adorable", it just means that people can do whatever they want to her. It's not even out of malice! They love her! They don't even notice they've hurt her. Mizi reveres Sua for this reason, because Sua willingly makes the choice to let Mizi do whatever she wants to her. Sua is just like her, weak and made to do whatever others wish. Sua is her god above her, and the one beneath her that she can hurt if she so chooses. She doesn't want to hurt her; Mizi loves her, but that's what love is to her - to adore that which is cuter and more helpless than you. Because Sua surrenders to her, Mizi knows she is safe.

How can she not worship the one who has given her such a precious gift as control, as limited as it is?

They are the garden's two weakest creatures. Luka has no control beyond his claim of the stage, but Mizi will never even have that - she is too pretty, too adorable, too feminine. To be loved is to be hurt, to love another is to claim them. This is why she must love Sua more overpoweringly than Sua loves her. She sees her as a person, but loves her with the strongest expression she can muster, which is god. Her benevolent god, who grants her the freedom of control.

Luka can overpower the other contestants. Mizi can only overpower Sua, and only because Sua allows.

that ask earlier got me thinking about this au more. initially it was just a couple of doodles but im a bit invested now lol. things would kind of go as follows:

spearmaster finds artificer roughly like in this comic, while it's on its way to moon after getting the pearl ripped out by pebbles. it doesn't know what a baby is or that this is one (it just thinks this is a small creature that happens to resemble it), and to be fair, artificer can definitely take care of themself better than the average slugpup. they were abandoned by their colony at a young age, when their explosive abilities began to manifest, but i think they'd have been raised by a colony of carnivorous slugcats, so them eating meat isn't that anomalous. they're definitely in the cycle, so they can come back after they die (which they do, many many times), but they're not locked at karma 1 yet. they also can't craft anything yet; their spit just kind of sizzles and burns if it gets on you, and their explosive jump is very weak. if they get knocked off spearmaster's back during a fight, it's going to have a hell of a time catching them again lol. (they definitely still explode underwater though, i have a small comic about that that didn't fit in this post.)

the campaign pretty much progresses just as it would if played with a slugpup-- a couple of extra deaths and detours, a cycle where arti gets killed and spearmaster sighs deeply before throwing itself in acid, etc. i think it would bring arti back with it to sun's superstructure just because i like the idea of suns being like "how did you get a baby???" lmao. arti probably grows up there, learns to fight from their parent, menaces the ecosystem, and then eventually feels an urge to return to the place they were born in. spearmaster by that point is likely too old to travel that far, so they go alone, and on their travels they either adopt or asexually reproduce to create two slugpups of their own. and then the cycle continues.
