been musing on deep space nine's runway success in @need-him-pregnant-poll & star trek's general mpreg possibility scope. so here's my take on mpreg in star trek series:
TOS:✅❓🤨🤭 POSSIBLE, WITH CAVEATS. would be considered an amusing, curious, and off-putting facet of some alien life. Could potentially temporarily impact main crew, but it would be a one-off, with the birth occurring immediately or otherwise terminating.
TNG: ✅❓🤨 POSSIBLE, NOT LIKELY MAIN CREW. Would almost certainly present a dilemma about carrying the life without the host's consent, which main cast wouldn't have to make a hard decision about, in the end. A side character may make the decision and be righteously interrogated on it
DS9: ✅ ✅ PROBABLE. Any alien could mpreg carry a baby, and they'd spend half the reveal episode gossiping about it. Bashir would act smug evolved about it, maybe a little medically fascinated. O'Brien would be racist; "it's unnatural." Julian almost was cornered into mpregging. It was inches away from a real plotline.
VOY: ✅ ✅ 💥 PROBABLE, LIKELY ABORTION. Literally any character could be mpregged, and I'd believe it. Even the women. Janeway-approved survival abortion (📈) or Janeway-approved "we need to find some meaning some how out here" sloganeering (📉)
ENT: __ [I'm so sorry.. you can't make me watch it]
(MOST) NEW TREK: ❌❌❓ NOT FREAKY ENOUGH. TRIES TO CLING TOO MUCH TO NOSTALGIA BAIT, NOT AUTHENTIC WEIRDNESS. Could mayyyyybe be a fun fact one character says as part of a safe one-off quip: "Do you know male [alien race] actually carry their young?" haha everyone claps and they forget about it
LWD: 👑 CANON.

Jane Wyatt was born in 1910. So she was 57 when she played Spock's mother Amanda in TOS "Journey to Babel".
Mark Lenard, Sarek, was 43.
Leonard Nimoy was 36.

I can't count how many times I've seen folks ask, "Should I tag this fic 'Major Character Death' on AO3? The character dies in canon before this story, but it deals with other characters grieving for them."
I've never known the answer, either—does MCD only apply to fics where the character dies *in the fic*, or does it also cover fics that focus on others grieving for that character? (personally, I avoid both like the plague, and fics tagged with MCD are easier to stay away from, so I have always preferred the latter).
But I was just talking with some friends about when to use the MCD warning, and I thought I'd share a specific snippet from the article above:
We require “Major Character Death” when the character is both a major presence in the fanwork and they’re dead by the end of the fanwork. We don’t take canon into consideration here – what we’re interested in is whether the character is a major presence in your fanwork. If you create a fanwork centered on a character that dies and stays dead in your work, that work should be warned for “Major Character Death” even if they only appear for one line in canon. If that same character dies before the start of your work, and dealing with the grief of their loss is a major part of the fanwork, “Major Character Death” is also required in this situation.
So there you go!
There's also this useful bit:
If your work features a character death and that character returns in a later chapter that is currently posted, then this warning is not required. However, if the character does not return to life until a sequel fanwork, the warning is still needed on the work in which they died. Archive Warnings apply to individual fanworks, not to series of works.
I highly recommend that anyone who posts works on AO3, and even people who don't, go read these Spotlight articles. They're super informative and they answer a lot of specific questions that people in fandom ask all the time. All of this info has been in AO3's TOS and FAQ for ages, but having topics broken into chunks like this is really helpful.
