Hi i ADORE the essay (ariticle?) you wrote about Tortallan heraldry! Is there anything you'd like to see Pierce incorporate more into the Tortall series in that arena? Any fiefs you want the coats of arms for or anything like that?

oooooh good question! I definitely would love more data points in general, just to see whether any of my theories are correct—a few more knights' shields might tell me if bordures have a meaning in Tortall, and if that meaning is related to the Lady knights' Orle at all—or I might be able to find out when the nontraditional tinctures were introduced, and which ones are common compared to others. I'm particularly curious about Naxen and Queenscove in this aspect, as they're some of the oldest and most powerful fiefs in Tortall, with the mosts knights contributed (I believe Neal also lists Legann and ha Minch as among the oldest) and that data could be very helpful, as currently Conté is the only house we 100% know goes back to the founding of Tortall. We know Macayhill is in the Book of Gold, and probably so is King's Reach and Queensgrace before it rebelled, plus Haryse and Masbolle, but it's not 100% confirmed that the families in the book of gold predated Tortall as a nation or if they were simply enobled very early (and besides, we only have arms for Macayhill and King's Reach, of that list) It's also like a sample of the arms of families explicitly in The Book of Silver, so I can properly place things on a timeline better than "Macayhill oldest, Mindelan newest" I'd also love to know how Tortall handles grants of arms precisely. Getting a knighthood is obviously directly tied to getting an arms grant ("getting one's shield") but clearly some people get arms of their own (Alanna, Kel) and some people maintain cadency labels (Conté heirs) or are granted arms that are identical to other members of their families (Kel implies her brothers have the same arms, which...defeats the entire purpose of individual heraldry...) having some sort of arms is inherent to knighthood in Tortall, but there's clearly some changes based on circumstance behind the scenes, even if it is only a matter of request by the knight/preference by their family/special arms being awarded for special distinctions like being the First Lady knight in centuries. More data would help me puzzle that out, I think. On a similar note, I'd also like to know how non-knights get arms—if they're allowed to use their head of house's arms plus cadency and inherit arms when they become head of house by default even without a knighthood, or if they have to have completed some form of education, or hold a position at court, or what. There's at least two coats of arms in the meta belonging to people (the second aspen vale son who's a mage and George Cooper) who definitely aren't knights, and I'd like to know how that works when arms are part of the award of knighthood.

In 595 AC, one year after Alysanne V, Elaena gave birth to her second son, Daemion I, a boy who took after his father in looks strongly and became heir to Driftmark after Elaenas mother on his fifth name day. Daemion was a quite and serious boy and had been engaged to his Velaryon cousin, Lady Alanna for nearly all his life duo to the close friendship between their mothers. Daemion however had no interest in girls or even knightly activities, his love laid with his dragon, a large dark blue creature that he would spend any walking hour on, if allowed to. Elaena could not bear to send him away to be fostered at Drifmark, so instead his great grandfather taught him how to sail in the harbor of kings landing. His betrothed came to live at the red keep when Daemion was 14 and all though he dutifully spend time with her, there just wasn’t a spark. Instead they parted ways after their wedding, Alanna returned to driftmark and Daemion spend his time either traveling across the narrow sea by boat or dragon, or at court where he served as lord admiral to his brother, long before he even inherited the driftwood throne.

A year after Daemion princess Shaera II is born. She does posses classic Targaryen features but is very skinny and long limped, with wide set eyes and a long pointy face, which leads to her being mocked for her spider like appearance and awkward movements often. Shaera could read and write exceptionally well, but her face very very rarely showed any emotions and she did not voice her thoughts or struggles to other, which led to her being considered low of intelligent by her septa’s. Shaera was taller than most men and seldomly spoke, making her a hard match to make. Much like with Alysanne, Elaena was desperate to find a good and gentle husband for the girl, although Shaera might not have minded the silent sisters all that much. At nineteen Shaera married Robert Redwyne the young lord of the Arbor, who had travel all around Westeros by boat and only seen one portrait of the princess before agreeing to wed her. Shaera had only one daughter, but her mother was happy to see that Shaera would now occasionally smile, whenever her mother visited her.

Princess Alayne was born in 598 AC, she was named after the queens close friend and lady in waiting, Alayne Massey, and though small of stand and prone to bad luck, Alayne was the wildest of the queens daughters by far. Her father, king Rhaegar I, would take her dragon riding and taught her to use a bow as well as a sword. As a girl of 12 he took her along with him to tour the Riverlands, where his murder of Lord Blackwoods eldest son caused an up roar. In the midst of the ensuing rebellions, Alayne disappeared, she spend a good 4 years living in the wild, in enemy camps or in castles, disguised as a boy, with her hair dyed black. It was during these years that the 14 year old princess was thrown into a bear arena, (a common practice of entertainment among northerners at war) where she suffered a claw mark to the left cheek, before being rescued by her fathers dishonored knight, Ser Norren, who killed the bear and spend the next year trying to drag the girl back to her mothers court. Eventually Alayne married Lord Arin Baratheon, a man ten years her senior at 18, by her own choice. She became known as ‘the she-hound of the Stormlands’.

Prince Aeron I was the third son born in 599 AC, he was a smart boy and he and Rhaegar II had been inseparable in their youth, but when he turned 18 he expressed his wish to got to the citadel and become an arch maester, he did just that and the men of the citadel prophesied him a bright future until in the year 619 AC Aeron visited a Tourney at Harrenhal and meets Lady Sabitha Tully, who he falls deeply in love with. She is smart, honest and capable and they exchange frequent letters for the following year, only falling deeper in love, but Sabitha is betrothed to the heir of house Bracken, Ser Jorrik, who is frankly, a terrifying dude. So just a few months before the wedding, Aeron takes his dragon and goes and marries Sabitha, leaving her father and the Brackens enraged. They leave for kings landing, Aeron becomes hand of the king to his brother eventually and Sabitha becomes a great politician. Aeron does a terrific job at keeping the realm together during the chaos that is Rhaegar II ascension and funfact: a lot of boys are named after him. He also kills Jorrik Bracken in a duel at some point sooo…

but doesn’t remember him remind you of anyone but they all managed to get out of thereand go hide out in a Chinese restaurant where the become more acquainted state gets kidnapped by the hand but gets out of there by cutting off his own hand get itand goes to talk to the team Alexandraand had followed to see Alexandraand the hand is a whole knee iron fist alive because his iron fist is the key to open the gate to the sweet sweet Dragon bones if I happens electro starts remember who she isand that offenders get their hands on one of the hands main leaders also have their superhero team name is the defenders this guy is not of much help thoughand so stick to set off is not happy about this because they’re running out of there immortality juice the defender starting though because they’re like if the hand need you Danny we should probably had your wayand then he does what he does bestand is a whiny baby so they’ll punch him for a whileand then time however stickand typical stick fashion thinks that he might in the world so I’m getting kill him but lecture shows upand kill stickand tasty on fist to the hand she also kills Alexandra as she wants to be in charge I guess Jessica Jones find out more about that whole get it will found a while back with hands digging for Dragon bones after Lilith over the police that offenders minus Danny fight the hand plus the got Colleen to Strange Adventures #3 DC Black Label 2020 Written by Tom King Illustrated by Mitch Gerads Coloured by Evan Shaner Lettered by Clayton Cowles    Can Adam Strange handle the truth? After the cosmic adventurer was accused of murder and had his whole record as a soldier questioned, he turned to Batman for help clearing his name. But someone else was needed to ensure that the investigation would be truly impartial. Enter Mr. Terrific, the man for whom “Fair Play” is a credo to live by.   Be careful what you wish for, Adam Strange, because your life is about to be turned upside down. This could be one of the greatest tests you’ve ever faced. Like when you had to prove yourselves in Rann’s gladiatorial arena.  This adventure between two worlds continues….    This is utterly phenomenal!  I mean the Mister Miracle was groundbreaking for sure but to follow that up with this is sheer bloody genius.  For one of DC’s earliest stars to have fallen by the wayside the way he has, it is super nice to see that he’s the focus of a story that could very well be canon as it is set in another reality.  That we don’t see as much of the space heroes as we have in prior years is a shame because there is a wealth of great characters going to disuse unless they appear in Green Lantern.  This feels like a time when Adam was a member of the Justice League of America, he got married in volume one, but with a modern twist.  So completely realised is this that it is very nearly scary in how gosh darn it is.    The way that this is being told is flawlessly brilliant.  The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented beautifully.  Sure the Justice League was asked by Adam to look into this but it’s Batman who takes this too far and by engaging Mister Terrific they are definitely going too far in proving he’s guilty not innocent.  This leads me to the character development we see in these pages.  While Adam is who he is and that’s pretty much All-American boy next door mom and apple pie, however it’s Alanna who really steals the show here.  She’s feisty, opinionated, smart and deadly, oh and she likes to smoke cigarettes which is surprising but I am actually okay with.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how well everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.    The interiors here are utterly gorgeous.  The linework is truly exquisite and there is this way of seeing these soft and almost delicate lines form these strong unbreakable moments that is awe inspiring.  The utilisation of not only varying weights but of techniques throughout really do bring us some amazing attention to detail.  Thank you for the hairy chest and making Adam something of sex symbol throughout half this book!  The creativity and imagination that we see is mindbogglingly brilliant, Kklint alone is stunning.  How we see backgrounds being utilised to not only enhance the moments but bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and this overall sense of size and scope to the book is stupendous work.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this masterful eye for storytelling.  The colour work is equally as brilliant.  How we see the various flesh tones utilised to create musculature is sensational.  The various hues and tones we see within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows such an understanding for colour, how it works and how to utilise it properly.  Then there’s how we see Hawkman and his helmet and wings and such, by fiery light of the silver moon is this magnificent. ​    The story really is amazing and how we see the Rann and Earth sections playing out and how they tie together is intriguing on so many levels.  The layering and the clash of personalities and then the sheer fact Alanna is fearless and in Batman’s face about it makes me love her even more.  If this is what most of DC’s books looked like then I would read every single one of them.

Drift of Mist

The Lady clapped her hands, once, twice, three times and that seemed to be all that was necessary.  Three doorways stood in the arena now. The one that opened in front River was a swirling vortex.  He stepped forward and stepped through it without hesitation or really anything else.  (That was gratifying.  It wasn't like she wanted to hear anything else from him.)

The one in front of Nick and Anna was a stone gate.  Nick smiled in recognition and Anna only nodded at him.  (She was still on his arm. Nixie was truly beginning to wonder if she was in much, much worse shape than she was admitting.  That would not surprise Nixie if it were true.  She could only hope at this point that Nick would be enough to get her though their trial.)  

Nick walked up, unlatched and opened the gate.  Nixie leant as far to the side as she could, and noticed, just through the other side, that there was something different if you looked through the gate than just the other side of the arena.  But she couldn't see exactly what it was, couldn't make it any sort of shape or landscape that made sense.

And before she had finished processing any of that, Nick bowed Anna through and shut the gate behind them.

They vanished.

When River went through the vortex, she wasn't surprised that he vanished.  But when the gate moved, when it was opened (it opened out) they didn't step through on the other side and that felt...different.  Weirder.  Stranger.  It ought to be something that made sense.  

Now there was only the door in front of them.  It was a wooden door, with a brass knob, the kind you might see in a house or an apartment—it was the epitome of a door, Nixie thought.  She couldn't remember the number of these that she'd ever seen before in her life, but she knew that she'd seen it before.  She couldn't count the number of these that she'd seen before.

It was set in a frame, which she thought was a nice touch.

It was closed.

Around the edges, she could see the rest of the arena.

Of course she could.  That was completely normal.

It was only that...that on the other side...that wasn't what they were going to.  She knew that.

Alanna tapped her shoulder and smiled, grinning wide.  Her hair was bright pink against the graying sky and she grabbed Nixie's hand. “Come on,” she said.  “Haven't you always wanted an adventure?”

Update!! 6 months!

So this update is very late and needed! I have been very busy seeing my exchange friends as over the past month my oldies have been going home. A lot has happened recently but the biggest would be Eurotour. 

Eurotour was 18 of the best days of my life. I’m not going to cover every aspect of it because this post would be very long, however, you can have some of my favorite memories.  We began the trip on the 18th of May and we drove to Berlin. After a few stops picking up the last few exchange students and getting lunch, we finally made it to Berlin. Everyone was very excited and ready to get to the hostel. By the time we had got our rooms sorted, we were taken to dinner in a restaurant that was decorated in a very old typical German way with wooden ceilings and wooden furniture and animal heads hung on the walls. For dinner, we had chicken and some potatoes and a strange salad. After dinner, we were given free time to walk around and explore the city. A group of us headed to visit a park that some of the boys wanted to go to. By the time we had been there had a look around, gotten a few photos it was time to walk back to the hostel. We spent the next day seeing the Berlin wall, which was absolutely beautiful and a memorial to the Jews. We then had free time to go explore the city for ourselves. Later our councilors surprised us with a trip up the Berlin T.V tower. The tower is 250m tall and we went to the top. At the top, you have a 360º view of Berlin. Afterward, we had more free time which we spent exploring the city again. 

The next day we drove to Czech where we stopped and looked in a concentration camp. It was a very strange experience but it was very good to hear about what happened there and the type of prisoners they had. this camp held a lot of political prisoners of war as well as Jewish. from the camp tour we continued our drive to our hotel which was just outside of Prague. The hotel was huge and consisted of two main areas, one where the rooms were and another which held activities and the dining area. We stayed for two nights in this hotel and spent a day exploring Prague. We visited the Old Castle which was a beautiful huge Gothic-style building. After spending an hour there to walk around, see the view and take some photos (unfortunately the line was way too long to get into the castle so we didn’t go inside) we headed down to the see more of the city. It was so beautiful and full of life and many small streets and gorgeous buildings. We spent a few hours exploring different sections of the city and then spent some time relaxing before meeting with the group again.

Over the next day, we drove to Vienna. We didn’t do anything else that day apart from having a small look around and eating dinner. The next day we spent driving around Vienna seeing the beautiful buildings and making a few stops to see the Schönbrunn Palace and the Hundertwasserhus. The Hundertwasserhus was a unique building that looked like it had been patchworked together because it was so miss-matched however it was absolutely gorgeous. The Schönbrunn Palace was still as magnificent as I had thought when we visited in 2016 and we explored some parts of the garden that I hadn’t seen at the last visit. From here we went and ate lunch. Alanna, Zara, Emily and I had some pasta and afterwards, I met up with Agnes. We went and had a coffee and talked and caught each other up about what we were doing and how our families were. It was really great to see her again. We were together for a few hours before she helped me find Alanna and Zara. Once I had said goodbye to Agnes we had more free time to just look around the section of the city near our hostel and shop. 

Next, it was onto Lido di Jesolo. We drove over the border of Austria and Italy and the view was just amazing. The mountains were stunning and very picturesque. The drive was long and we got to Lido di Jesolo in the evening. We found our rooms (we were very lucky getting a room on the top floor) and then decided to go to the beach. It was really nice to go to a beach again that wasn’t super muddy or super rocky. We spent a few hours there before heading back to the hotel and turning in for the night. The next day we went to Venice! We drove over to where we would catch the ferry to Venice. Once we had arrived in Venice we had a small tour and then our guides and councilors surprised us with Gondal rides. The rides lasted about half an hour but they were beautiful. Venice was so amazing and being able to see part of it from the small trip on the canals was truly special. Once our Gondola ride was over we had free time to explore the city. First, we went and bought huge ice-creams in waffle which were really delicious. We also bought some fresh fruit and found a small street with steps at the end that we sat on and were able to enjoy the sun, not have tourists crowding it and just enjoy the canals. From there we went and had a look at some souvenir shops and more of the small streets and buildings. Eventually, we found our way back to our meeting place and met up with the others and then we headed back to the hostel. Once we were back at the hotel and had had dinner we went down to the beach for the rest of the evening. That night Alanna, Zara, Emily and I decided to sleep on our balcony because it was a beautiful night and we had the top floor and a huge balcony. Surprisingly our sleep wasn’t that bad however we were awoken by church bells that rang for about 20 minutes. That day was reserved for us all to spend it at the beach. So after breakfast, we headed down and set up for the day. We spent the day lying in the sun and swimming. For lunch we had pizza and it was delicious! I think we ate about one pizza each. That evening we went and did karaoke at a restaurant near the hotel. It was a lot of fun. 

Day 10 we drove through Italy stopping in Verona, which is famously known for Romeo and Juliet. We saw the Arena in Verona which was great although it was under construction so there was a lot of fences and building supplies sitting near. We were also taken to Juliet's balcony which was in a small courtyard and was very sweet. We then had two hours free time in which we went and had lunch, (pasta that was so delicious), and saw a little more of the town. Then it was time to continue driving to our hotel for the night. 

The next day we continued driving to reach Avignon. We drove through the Alps which were magnificent and truly mesmerizing. Our day stop was in Nice which is such a beautiful city. Here we were given free time to see the city and possibly go swimming if we wanted. First, we headed up to the Castle Hill to see the view from the top. It was so beautiful seeing how vibrant blue the ocean was and how full of life it made the city seem. From here we headed down to get lunch and sit on the beach. We lost track of how long we were lying on the beach because we all fell asleep slightly because the sun was so warm and the ocean sound was very calming. When we all decided it would be best for us to get up we went for a small walk around and found some macarons to try. They were very delicious. I bought an ice-cream macaron and a normal one. The ice-cream macaron was a giant macaron with ice-cream as the filling. By the time we had finished here and had seen a little more of the city, it was time to continue our drive to Avignon. 

Day 12 we were taken to Pont Du Gard which is an old Roman aqua bridge. We walked down across the bridge and down to the river which runs underneath it. We went swimming down part of the river and, although the water was very cold, it was very refreshing and nice. We only had half an hour before we had to head to the bus for a picnic lunch. From there we headed back to the town of Avignon to see the city. Inside the city is the Palace of the popes which was huge and sat just higher than the rest of the city. Here we were given free time so I went into the Cathedral next to the Palace with Sofia, Regina, and Marianna. Sofia and I then went together to see some of the city and found a very cute merry-go-round which we went on. Soon we meet up with a few of the others and walked back to our hostel where a few of us went in the pool. 

Now it was time to go to Paris! We spent the day driving, only stopping for lunch. Once we had made it to our hotel and had our rooms sorted we went to go on a river tour around Paris. The boat tour took us around to see a few of the attractions such as what was left of the Notre Dame, and of course the Eiffel tower. The tour was really nice and due to the time of day (evening), it was very beautiful. Once the tour was over it was time to head back to the hostel. The next day we went to the Louvre Museum. We spent two hours there walking around. Firstly, of course, we went and saw the Mona Lisa. Us exchange students took over and pushed our way to the front to get some good photos. From there we went to another part of the museum and Alanna, Owen and I got separated from the other group so we just went off looking at other parts. Zara was unfortunately very sick so she stayed at the hotel. Alanna, Owen and I walked around looking at the paintings.  We spent two hours there and then went to meet up with the rest of the exchange students. From here we went to the Eiffel tower and were given free time. We went to get lunch, first, we had Chipotle and then we got a savory crepe (I had ham and cheese) and it was delicious! Next, we went back to the group and were given the opportunity to go see the Square Nadar. It was quite warm so we went and got some cold drinks and then begun our walk to the top. Once we got there we had a look down some of the streets and got ice cream. Soon it was time to go back to the Eiffel tower. There we waited to go up but we had problems with the tickets so unfortunately, we didn’t get to go up the tower. However, we went and found a nice patch on the grass and watched the light show. We then walked back to the hotel, so that we could get enough sleep for the next day. The next day it was time for Disney Land! Whilst we waited for our councilors to get our tickets we went and had lunch at a sandwich place inside the Disney park. fro there we went and got our tickets and went inside. Alanna, Emily, Jom and I went on Space Mountain as soon as we got it. We had to leave Zara out in some shade because she was very sick, she ended up going back to the hotel. After Space Mountain and deciding what we were going to do (Emily went back with Zara) Alanna and I went on to the next rides. We spent a while in lines and going on rides whilst also seeing the park. Eventually, we found some others and walked around with them. After a while, in Disneyland Park, we went over to look at the Studio park. Alanna and I went on two rides, the Aerosmith rollercoaster and the Tower of Terror. Both were really great although I think the tower of terror would’ve been better if we could understand what it was saying. By this time we were pretty exhausted and headed back to Disneyland park and met with the others. By this time everyone was super tired and we went back to the hotel.  

From Paris, it was onto Holland. To get there we went through Belgium, stopping in Brussels for a few hours. In Brussels, our main sight to see was Manneken Pis. This is a tiny little statue of a naked little boy peeing. One story behind the legend of it is that a fathers son went missing and the father found him peeing on the street corner and so in gratefulness of finding his son decided to build a statue on the corner he was found. Of course, there are several other stories behind it but this was the one we were told. After a few hours of free time, we then had to continue our trip to the Nederlands and get to our hotel in Doorwerth. 

Our 17th day of the trip was spent in Amsterdam. To start our day we went on a canal tour through Amsterdam, passing several sights such as parts of Jordaan, and Anne Franks house. Once the tour was over our councilors and guides surprised us with tickets to Madame Tussauds. We were given free time to go in there and then see what we wanted in Amsterdam. Madame Tussauds was really cool, my favorite was probably the Avengers. Once we had seen all of Madame Tussauds we went to get lunch and then had a look around at some of the canals and went and did some shopping. After doing some more walking around we had to head back to the guides so we could go back to the hotel. Once we got back to the hotel we had some free time and then we had a final night party and flag signing. It was really great and a lot of fun. 

The final day was spent driving back to Denmark. It was a sad trip because over 18 days we had all become very close and considering a lot of them were leaving shortly after. Once we had said our goodbyes it was time to head home. 

After Eurotour I spent a lot of time seeing my oldies and spending as much time with them as I could before they left. I also moved host families to the Schwartzs during this time. My new family is very welcoming and I have adjusted great. Due to some host family complications, I moved to what was supposed to be my third family so they had planned their summer holidays and couldn’t fit me in their plans last minute so right now I am back with Birgitte, Lars, and Zofie, no longer Victor who left to Mexico yesterday for his exchange. Tomorrow we will go to Møn for a few days, which will be nice.

Tamora Pierce and her sneaky ass cameos

It’s been a while since I either started yelling or cried from a book, but Tamora Pierce managed both with a well placed, stealthy cameo in Tempests and Slaughter.

You know the one, towards the end of the book, in the arena. The cameo I didn’t realise I needed.

I don’t know how much I enjoyed Tempests and slaughter but I do know it gave me many a feel. Also, I haven’t read a Tamora Pierce book for the first time since mastiff so it was weird not knowing exactly what was going to happen all the time

Actually, for me, I think part of what contributed to me being (I’m going to call it being unsatisfied with the book because it’s not that I didn’t enjoy it, it just didn’t satisfy me) was that in a way I do know exactly where this all ends, from reading the Wild Magic series.  And try as I might, that leaves me with a lack of wanting to connect to certain characters in Tempests & Slaughter.  When you know someone isn’t going to turn out well, you spend the whole time suspecting them of the worst - is Ozorne actually behind the very bad things they imply Chioke is knee deep in (regicide, rigging the succession, etc.) Yeah, I would buy it. 

Another point of being unsatisfied for me came from some story structure issues - I’m trying to be as spoiler free as I can, so please ask for clarification if I get too vague on my spoiler observations. I was waiting for something - Preet, Chioke and the regicide plots, Faizy’s death - to over arc and come to some sort of resolution.  While books in a series are designed to be open ended, as a reader, there’s a dissatisfied feeling when you don’t have an arc or plot of some sort resolve.  Even Arram isn’t resolved in the end on his eventual need to leave, he’s still in a mindset of convincing his friend.  Additionally, the Musenda “reveal” happened too soon for me.  It’s very apparent in that chapter that Arram is going to be faced with hard death, and the potential for it being Musenda’s death came off the table too soon.  I felt like that should have come from the end of his time at the arena.

But I think the biggest source of feeling unsatisfied from the book came from the fact that in the end, this was a book about boys and male character driven.  When I pick up Tamora Pierce, from way (way way way) back in the day when I first read Alanna to Mastiff a few years ago, I read for tomboys and strong female characters.  I’ve been forcefed a steady diet of male characters all my life, in classes and by the market which still is dominated by the male protagonist.  I pick up Tamora Pierce for the women I identify with.  (I also tend to only pick up YA with male protagonists these days if they are LGBTQIA+)

In the end, I’ll say there were some great things about the book, but while I enjoyed it’s pieces, the whole left me rather unsatisfied.

So,  this story is starting to get very strange indeed.

At first, Gentle Readers, I thought this was going to be a very twisted Kanjar Ro story, where Adam was being framed for war crimes which he not only did not commit, but crimes which did not exist. I mean, Rann is a Zeta Beam ride away, who exactly is going to to verify any of the accounts?

Then, with the introduction of Michael Holt in the second issue, the smartest, most fair minded individual on Earth, we have the Investigator.  His job, as he has accepted, to determine whether there is any truth to the allegations too War Crimes having been committed by Adam Strange, and then to determine the extent of the crimes. His mission, after interviewing Adam and Alanna, to travel to Rann, and review all the records.

For Mr. Terrific, this will be a daunting task.

Issue Three tosses a Sliding Curve Ball through the plate glass window.

Alanna Strange, wife of Adam, seems to be leading a smear campaign against the investigators… Mr. Terrific, and the Justice League, and trying them in the court of Public Opinion.

Planting seeds of distrust in the media over the lines of questioning being followed, unsubstantiated offhand comments, one sided analysis by talking heads on ‘fair and balanced’ news programs, and finally, paparazzi style photos being taken, and broadcast, to show a hero’s wife being strong armed by the Bat of Gotham…

What the Hell is going on???

I’m Lost.

I really feel as if I’ve been thrust into the DC version of the ‘Geraldo Show’, with all the insanity inherent in the host, and his audience.

This is gonna be good.

With 9 issues to go, if I was sure I had a handle on where this was going with Issue 3, I’d skip to Issue 11, and ride it out ’til then, saving my COVID Bucks.

The way this story has me all twisted up like a Gordian Knot, I can’t wait for the next issue… I’m running through Instagram, looking for Doc Shaner and Mitch Gerads feeds, hoping for a clue, with a post of a panel or a page…. I want to know outcome of Terrific’s investigation off world, and By Jingo, nothing’s going to keep me from it… except for the store being closed, or the books being late, or any of a hundred other teeny, tiny , little issues which I will not enumerate here.

But, I digress.

Tom King was a SPOOK. Yes, with a Capital SPOOK. He ‘was’ an analyst for the CIA.

There are two thing to remember when you read those words. First, nobody ever ‘was’ a spook… as anyone who has `read a Tom Clancy novel can tell you, no one wvwe leaves the CIA. What’s the line from ‘West Side Story’? 

‘When you’re a Jet,

You’re a Jet all the way!

From your first cigarette,

To your last dying day!’

Second, as an analyst, he has learned the art of finding the facts in a fabrication, and more importantly, how to hide the facts by creating a monstrous fabrication.

His creation is simply marvelous. 

There is a line in this chapter which perfectly illustrates this point:

‘Not all stories are FICTION’

It is up to the Reader to determine the Demarcation Point, that place in the narrative where the Documentary becomes a Work of Fancy, or, the Tale becomes Testimony… Where is that, you ask?

Again, I am lost.

Which brings us to the team of Gerads and Shaner, illustrators to the gods.

These artists are at polar opposites, the stark angular backgrounds of the cityscapes, to the soft curves of the arena, the hard edginess of Earth, compared to the softer fluidity of Rann .The minutiae in the detail ( Law Firm of Gardner & Fox… I giggled, I remembered, a tear formed)the beauty of the completeness.

Gerads and Shaner Complement and Contrast, each adding nuance to the other’s work, merely by appearing side by side. The Reader can easily enjoy the two stories as they unfold, and as we move further into the narrative, watch as they appear to begin blending into one expansive, scary picture.

Woe be to anyone unprepared for the coming crossfire.

Things get decidedly real.

Michael Hold becomes an interplanetary persona non gratis, and a diplomatic nightmare.

Alanna Strange is showing her cards, and she’s playing with a fist full of aces. She has gone from Space Heroine to Jerri Springer in one hand…

Adam Strange seems to be showing all the signs of having psychotic breaks, if his story is true.

And, Gentle Readers, this is where we find ourselves at the end of Issue 4, with two-thirds of the story to go.

Michael Holt has taken a ship to Rann.

His intention, to review all the documentation he can get his hands on concerning the Pykkt Incursion, in order to assess the veracity of Adam’s account, and the claims of War Crimes levied against him.

When he arrives, he is greeted with open arms by Karnath, the assistant to the Chief of Staff for the Science and Political Council.

In other words, Sardath is ducking him.

Michael accepts this for what it is, and moves on to the Library of Historical Archives, where he asks for the Pykkt documents.

Rebuffed, because no one on Rann, or anywhere else can read or translate the Pykkt documents, Michael goes on to prove how he earned the name Mr. Terrific, much to the chagrin of the Archivist.

This, of course, leads to an attempted Secret Police style arrest that night.

Michael takes himself to the Council Building, sans guards (having  dealt with them by T-Spheres), where he is rather ungraciously invited to remove himself from the planet, forthwith, fo;;owing an exchange of ‘extreme facial hand greetings” with Sardath,

Some people just do not understand the concept of ‘Fair Play’!

The B-story playing out is the part of the autobiography where Adam is angry that the Zeta Beam wore off just as he was leading the Hellotaat against the Pykkt, and more angry that his friends in the Justice League won’t help him to get back there, instead making him wait two weeks for the next Zeta Beam.

From  this reader’s perspective, it seems like we are being set up for something here…

Adam braces both Hal Jordan and Superman to help him, to no avail. He finds, in this version of the story, the League is more concerned with their own issues, and the potential interstellar political fallout from stepping in on Adam’s behalf to help him..

This seems contrived, almost unbelievable, considering the players asked… neither has ever put politic ahead of doing the right thing.

But, I digress, and analyze…

This chapter appears to take place over the span of a very short period, possibly as short as two days. We don’t see Adam in current Time-Space, only in the story flashbacks. Alanna, however, is another story. She seems to be playing a political game of sorts, and Michael is simply upset, but he has gleaned more information and understanding than he would have, had they just let him access the Pykkt Archives.

With the conflict gearing up, King’s story is becoming both psychological thriller and action superhero tale. I can’t wait what direction it roll to next…
