— “you write a lot of letters?” you ask keiji, sitting on his desk. he feels your watching eyes as he signs his name at the end of the paper, and glances up at you through his glasses with a small smile. “yes, i do,” he says, twirling the pen between his ink-marked fingers.

you hum, tilting your head. “who do you write to the most?” you ask, curiosity in your tone.

his pen stops twirling, and he freezes up just slightly, his eyes flickering up again. “m-my family,” he replies, with a chuckle. he just hopes you don’t notice the nervousness in it. “mmm, that makes sense,” you say, nodding. you pick up your mug and take a sip of your tea, turning away from him, and it seems like you’re none the wiser.

truthfully (and he can’t bear to say this out loud), he writes to you the most, pouring himself bare into every unrequited line.

his heart beats a little faster, a little louder as you continue to lounge on his desk. he feels it in his head and in his chest and under his feet. 

you don’t seem to hear that reverberating thumping every time you enter his house, but keiji thinks one day, some day, its rhythm will consume him enough to dig up all those unsent letters and scream in confession.

From his opening note, Jean is considered the everyman of Attack on Titan. He isn't special. His parents are inconsequential. He's here to get a cushy job in the interior and not have to worry about death knocking down his door or any of the other inconveniences that plague the masses. That's the dream, and he comes very close to living it.

Only death doesn't stop knocking just because his door is a little further down. Death is everywhere. That's instrumental to the growth of so many of these characters. Death is everywhere. What, then, is your response?

Getting the hell out, fuck this place, fuck dying for anything other than your own interests.

Some characters embrace death and its oblivion. Bertolt finds calm when he stops struggling against his oppressors and accepts being their weapon. Reiner longs for it, terribly, but he can't leaves his dependents behind.

Jean doesn't want to die.

Death is everywhere.

Jean's decision to become a member of the Survey Corps is not a triumphant claim of his principles, it's a dawning horror that this is the world as it stands -- unless there's a change. There is only one branch that is willing to fight for the change.

Jean is willing to die for that change. He doesn't want to. He doesn't want to fight this war. He doesn't want to be in the line of fire, he doesn't want to be eaten alive. Why should he? Why can't other people just deal with it?

Because everyone wants someone else to deal with it. Everyone would rather be alive. The world isn't kind enough to respect that.

Yet. Jean joins up praying for that yet.

And he lives.

exploring raven and qrow's dynamic via their semblances is so so so fun and tasty like i've transcended canon this is my city now lol

they would see their own semblance as more trouble than they're worth; for qrow it's how he's not wanted by people upon learning about misfortune, for raven it's attracting people who only want the perks of kindred link—the worst case scenarios being someone wanting him dead, or forcing a bond by any means necessary.

but to each other??? kindred link is proof that someone cares, that no matter how far he tries to go, not only can his sister be there in a second, but she gets a warning if his life is in danger, and by being close to her brother, the way people are wary of misfortune, keeping their distance, makes him the safest place for her.

Several Sentence Sunday

Both on time and late! I was tagged last sunday by the wonderful @gege-wondering-around which is honestly so, so, so kind of you. I had actually never intended to share this totally for fun (and my friend) fic but what the hell? Have... something that will eventually be Sterek!

There’s a tall, no-nonsense looking woman behind the reception desk who glances up, a little startled by his abrupt arrival. She seems to recover quickly, straightening from where she’d been leaning over a stack of papers to watch Stiles hurdle over a footstall and slam bodily into the reception desk. She doesn’t flinch but she does take a measured step back, giving Stiles ample room as he leans his elbow on the desk and tries to catch his breath.

“Good morning,” she says pleasantly, as if this is how all her guests arrive downstairs. “You must be Stiles.”

“Hi. Good morning, yes,” he gasps slumping forwards, staring beseechingly up at her with his big, innocent eyes. It’s the kind of look that would always get his dad to fold on whatever hardline stance he was taking so it should work on her.

“I need your help. I need a phone shop – for phones. Broken phones. My phone just crashed and if I don’t get it working my dad is going to commit multiple felonies that all end in homicide. Please help me prevent my murder. My Dad… he’s a deputy and homicide would look terrible on his service record. And he wouldn’t last one day in prison. Please. Help me. ”

The receptionist is staring at him and Stiles has long enough to question whether that was possibly too much before she breaks into a wolfish grin and tilts her head to look appraisingly at him. If he wasn’t so frantic he’d almost consider it rude. But then she’s nodding, almost as if she’s made up her mind about something, and pulls out a notepad, sweeping her papers efficiently to one side.

“Well. We can’t have that can we,” she says scribbling down an address on the pad. “Murder would be terrible for business.” She rips off the paper and hands it to him. “There are a few repair shops in town but I’d recommend you going to the Beacon Hills Chronicle. Ask for Danny. He’s good with tech and he won’t charge you. Tell him Laura sent you.
