Vandread is a weird show.
Like. Surface level it's a wacky, horny, comedy mecha anime.
But it's gender politics are all over the place, but I think they're supposed to be?
I just don't know if it's actually making a valid point, or even a coherent one.
The basic premise is that human men and women have been living on separate space colonies for so long that they view each other as alien species.
A small group of men and a ship full of female space pirates get Star Trek Voyager'd into a random spot in the galaxy and have to make their way back home while fending off attacks from strange alien drone spaceships.
The entire cast is ostensibly queer and it's never really questioned or analyzed. That's just the way they are. And it's not really a harem show, despite the set-up. One of the space pirates is absolutely DTF about one of the alien men, and another is sort of on the fence about it. Which is disconcerting to her actual partner. And the third main female character is just minding her own fucking business.
It feels like it's trying to say a lot of stuff, but I'm just not entirely sure what any of that stuff is.
