In Xuan Ji's opinion, she doesn't whine nearly as often as other people. To be transmigrated, reincarnated, or whatever her current circumstance is. She isn't even sure if she was transmigrated or reincarnated! She is even unaware of her own death! Does she even exist? Wait, of course she does exist. What kind of dumb question is that?? The system claims that she reincarnated, but it gives no indication of how she died. She has been on the phone and in the bus before. Did her bus experience a collision? But shouldn't she experience that pain as other anime and manga characters experienced it as well? 

Before rushing outdoors, she hastily put the black blindfold across her eyes. Having learned the ability of "inner-sight," the sight is translucent black, but she can still see herself surrounded. How much better it would have been if she could use eye contacts in the time period she is in. She wouldn't be forced to wear this obtrusive blindfold. It had only been 10 minutes and she already lost 100 points for it, making her account going negative! If she repeats that 100 more times, she will be buried alive! 

Spotting Xiyin holding the hairpin and enthusiastically waving it like a young child playing with their toy. She wasn't sure whether to be jealous of the young energy of the female or to act as though she doesn't know the female. It didn't matter since Xiyin approached her without hesitation, approaching her like an adorable kitten that needed its owner to survive. Xiyin positioned herself at Xuan Ji's side and then carefully nudged onto her long sleeve. 

"Hm?" To prevent Xiyin from realizing she already knew what the female was about to give her, Xuan Ji pretended to be completely unaware. 

"I just purchased you this hairpin, Xuan- Jie Jie. I hope you'll like it," Xiyin stutters inconsolably while looking to the side. Her cheek begins to flush a peachy-color as she struggles to look squarely at Xuan Ji. 

"Oh...thanks?" Xuan Ji was uncertain of the original Xuan Ji's response. She also doesn't want to lose any more points. 

Walking alongside Xuan Ji, Xiyin nodded but kept her mouth shut as her previous blush subsided. Xiyin presents as a pleasant and attractive young lady with a good body shape who wears light cosmetics. Even though she is only giving an item as a gift, Xiyin appears to admire the original Xuan Ji sufficiently to cause such reactions. 

They fell into an awkward silence because neither of them seemed to know what to say to the other. "Any place that you want to visit?" Xuan Ji immediately regretted the word after she had said it. She should have just kept quiet to avoid losing points for speaking in an ooc-style, but her noisy little mouth wasn't much help. 

"Anywhere that Xuan jiejie wanna goes, A-yin will follow"

Oh then, that was certainly of no use. Not that Xuan Ji will express her ideas in the open and dash Xiyin's hopes. 

Xuan Ji noticed an elderly woman staring at them as though she were waiting or hesitating. When the elderly woman noticed that Xuan Ji was looking at her, she swayed to the side. The woman approached them after gathering the guts to do so and said, "What sect are you two females from?"

"We're not members of a sect", replied Xiyin immediately in response to the query. The elderly woman changes in some way after hearing that. "Is something wrong?" As she kept gazing at the woman though her black blindfold, Xuan Ji asked. 

"Nothing. Simply put, I was concerned that I wouldn't have enough money to pay them if they were cultivators from a larger sect."

Xuan Ji replied, "What is it that you need help with?"

"My son is missing ever since yesterday night, I been attempting to ask around yet ..."

Graveyard: Chapter One

-A Pet For The King-

A/N: Here we go! Off to the races! Do these two have a history? Sure seems like it... Tags are open.

There were at least 50 prisoners ahead of you awaiting their assignments at the work shed. Thanks to Korg, you’d been released from your cell, and sent for something called Joruuda’s Judgement.

From what you gathered, Joruuda is a green guy with 2 heads assigning people to different lines. A simple grunt—all of which sounded the same to you, and one of his assistants would shove you where he decided.

There’s about 10 people to go when you feel a soft tap on your shoulder. You turn, and your gaze immediately has to glance another 3 feet higher.

“Hey Ella, it’s me Korg.” The pile of rocks smiles happily.

You smile, shaking your head in disbelief. This guy really is too nice to be locked up in here.

“Hi, Korg.”

He stands awkwardly next to you as the line begins to move again. “Whatcha doing?” He asks.

You sigh. “Just awaiting destiny.”

“That’s a funny way to look at a life time of manual labor, but okay. Hey, that King guy is here. Wanna see him?” He asks innocently.

You scoff. “Why is a guy that’s supposedly a King down in the cells? Not much regality to be found in a dungeon.”

Korg shrugs. “Not sure, but I think the Grandmaster is letting him have his pick of concubines.”

You roll your eyes. “Wonderful.”

You’re next in 2 away from being judged, “No thanks, Korg. The guys is probably a lunatic, and I’ve had my fill of those.”

“Alright, suit yourself. Hopefully you don’t get sent to the 4th line.”

Your stomach churned, “Whats the 4th line, Korg...”

“Oh, that’s the ah, the sewage department.” He smiled.

“Next!” The assistant with the clipboard called.

You step up to the line marked on the floor. “Race?” She asks you.

“Asgardian.” You reply, attempting to avoid eye contact. Most people these days didn’t like hearing that someone had visited Asgard, let alone was a citizen.

One of Joruuda’s heads turn and looks at you abruptly. His three eyes scan you up and down, before growling something to the assistant on his left.

“Alright, Asgardian. Lane One.” She says. You smile meekly, and follow the guard.

Compared to the other lanes you’d seen, lane one was relatively empty. Just you and 6 or 7 other women; of every shape and color, mind you.

A guard holding the largest blaster you’d ever seen stood at the head of the line. “Listen up, urchins! Through that door you will remain silent! Stand there...look appealing...keep your mouths shut. For those of you selected...well, congrats. Those of you who aren’t?” He smirked, “I’ll see you in the sewers.”

Selected? You thought. For what?

If you’re being totally honest, you’re not exactly sure how much worse things for you could get, so you decided to roll with it.

A buzzer sounded, and the door ahead of you shot up, opening into a large white room.

The 8 of you file in and stand on marked spots. Curiosity got the better of you, and you start to look around. It seems to just be a large white room with one door on either side. On the wall ahead of you however, you notice a small seam across the bottom where it meets the floor.

Illusionary walls. You think to yourself.

Suddenly another buzzer sounds, and a voice comes over an intercom, speaking yet another language you don’t understand.

A door on the other side of the room opened, and a guard walked in. He makes his way to the group of you and without hesitation, grabs the front of your shirt and yanks you towards the door.

Shit, shit, shit! You didn’t actually prepare for what would happen had you been picked.

Three more guards walk past you, back into the room where the other girls are awaiting their fate. “Alright ladies, to the sewers!” One says happily. The last thing you hear before the doors shut is shrieking.

“This way...Asgardian.” The guard commands. Note to self, keep your origin story private from now on.

The guard escorts you down the dark hallway, and into a very questionable elevator. Then, a transport carrier arrives and escorts you to the one building towering over the rest of the city.

Once inside, you traipse down the red and white hallway, before stopping in front of a door. “Wait here. When the door opens, you can enter.”

You nod, not wanting to attract unnecessary attention. The guard takes a few paces behind you, but waits there with his gun at the ready.

After a few moments, the door slides up. You walk in, and see people in the bright clothing and markings all over their faces. A large, boisterous group is straight ahead of you, laughing. When they see you approaching, they part down the middle.

A man walks forward, dressed in the gaudiest outfit you’d ever seen. His nails and eyeliner matched the same shade of blue, and his assistant was the surliest looking woman you’d ever seen.

“Ah, here she is!” He leaned over to her, “it is a she...right, Topaz?”

“It is a she.” The stout woman replied monotonously.

It doesn’t take you long to realized that this nutjob is the Grandmaster.

“Wonderful, wonderful! Sire, I believe this is the one you’ve selected to be your concubine du jour?” He asks suggestively.

A crowd to your left splits a path, and you sense his presence before you see him.

“Oh yes, I do believe she’ll do wonderfully.” The smirk in his voice is undeniable.

No, not here. You think.

But he is here—Loki, in all his glory.

“You’ve got to be shitting me...” you scowl.

“Hey, hey! Language missy, this is the King of Assberg!” The Grandmaster boasts.

“Asgard.” You and Loki mumble simultaneously.

He laughs suggestively, “Ah look at that, bonding already I see. Well your majesty, please feel free to retire to your chambers. Those broad shoulders of yours must be quite tense, and I can see in your eyes you’re just dying to get a taste of...” he drifts off, unsure of what to call you.

“Prisoner 7648.” His assistant said boringly.

You rolled your eyes, “My name is Ella and I will not be going with him.”

As you turn around to leave, you’re met with the whirring of a laser blaster aimed straight at you.

Putting your hands up in surrender, you spin back around.

“Oh no actually, I think you will, won’t she?” The Grandmaster queried.

“Mmm.” Topaz replied.

Loki took a step forward. “Grandmaster, might I humbly request some privacy for the day? I’m quite pent up you see, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to control myself with this one.” He says, looking you up and down.

I’m going to kill you in your sleep. You think as loud as possible, knowing Loki is probably poking around in your head. A smirk crossed his lips for a moment, and you’re confident he read your mind.

Good.

“But of course. Feel free to join my pleasure vessel later, we embark after dinner.” He offers Loki, to which you feel the vomit rise in your throat.

I am surrounded by maniacs. You think to yourself.

“I shall consider it,” he replies. “For now, I’ll take to my chambers.” Loki’s gaze is upon you once more, but his eyes aren’t holding that signature arrogance you’re used too. They almost look...relieved?

Probably to leave this fools company.

The guards who escort you were equally as creepy as the rest, and while Loki roamed freely ahead of you, they’d chosen to shackle you—at Loki’s insistence.

“I can take it from here, gentlemen.” He said, punching in numbers on the keypad on the wall next to the door.

You keep silent as he walks you into the room, and removes your shackles.

“Now then—“

Slap!

Your hand reverberates off his cheek before the shackles hit the floor.

Loki’s face remains unphased as he grabs your wrist, squeezing it tightly. It’s hurts, but you won’t give him the satisfaction in telling him that.

“Striking the God who just saved you is not the wisest of choices.” He seethes.

His grip grows stronger, surely bruising you. “Saved me? You’re the reason I’m here in the first place, asshole!”

His tone lowers, “Careful, pet. You’ve no friends here, and I am still your king.” He warns.

You tear out of his grasp. “You’re nothing to me. Just the man who tried to have me killed.” You turn your back on him, and walk towards the window.

He laughs sardonically, “Don’t be so dramatic.”

“Dramatic?!” You shout, “You summoned a tidal wave to chase me down and drown me.”

His face shift into something you can’t decipher. “You would not have drowned. You’d have been pull back toward the palace, but instead you decided to not head my warnings and kept running.” You hear his footsteps carrying him closer to you.

“How did you even find me? Have you charmed me? Put some sort of location spell on me?” You sneer.

He chuckled, “You’re not worth the effort it would take to maintain it. I fell into the bifrost same as you, only I was wise enough not to get myself captured.”

You turn to him and cross your arms, “and how do you expect the Grandmaster will feel when he find out he’s housing a murderous usurper?”

Loki closes the space between the two of you, “Oh pet, I don’t expect him to become aware of any of that. A gentle reminder that I’m the only thing standing between you and a lifetime of slavery to that lunatic, so I suggest you do not try my temper.”

“Or what?” You prod.

He moves his lips close to your ear, “or I’ll have you sent back to your cell to rot away into eternity.” He whispers.

When he pulls his face back, his eyes are boring into yours, “Thoughts?”

You swallow thickly, your eyes unable to leave his gaze. As much as you detested the God before you, you knew better than test him. Besides, being with him is a much better choice than being a prisoner.

...well, a prisoner in a cell anyway.

You’d known Loki your whole life. There was a time when you’d never imagine he’d hurt you, but it’s all different now. After what he did all those years ago on Midgard, and what he’s done now to Odin, there’s no predicting him. His taste for power and purpose has drained him of his humanity.

“Fine, but if you think I’m going to serve as your concubine, you’ve got another thing coming.” You threaten, though after his words, the threat comes out meeker than intended.

Loki laughs, “If that’s what I wanted of you, I’d take you...right here,” he braces his palms against the window behind you, trapping your body between it and his. “Where everyone could see you come apart, but alas, I’ve other pressing matters, I’m afraid.”

Asshole.

“Why did you pick me then? You can’t possibly think I would uphold any loyalty to you. What purpose could you have for me?” You ask, trying to shrink from his gaze.

Loki pulled away from you, moving across the room. He removes his leather cloak, laying it on the bench at the end of his bed.

“I have plans. Plans that will require someone with your skills, and if you’d like to see Asgard again, you’ll do as your told.”

The anger building within you began to bubble over, “‘Do as your told?’, I’m not a dog, Loki. I’m not a pet you can train and command.”

“Actually,” he ponders, “that’s exactly what you are. Whilst on Sakaar, my pet you shall be.”

Sakaar? Well at least I know where I am, now.

He sits upon the bench, and removes his boots. “How long have you been here?” He asks suddenly.

You shrug, “I don’t know. A month? Maybe less maybe more. The days in the cells all blurred together.”

A sort of sadness flashes in his eyes, but you ignore it. You will not fall for the trickster god’s schemes.

“Hm, well I’ve been offered to join the Grandmaster for dinner. It’s supposedly quite the grand affair, so I suggest you bathe.” He says, looking you up and down once more.

Oh gosh, when was the last time you bathed? You can’t remember, and it’s embarrassing. You were never the fairest of maidens on Asgard, but right now you looked like something scraped off the bottom of a boot.

“Don’t fret, pet. I assume life was not full of grandeur in the dungeons. Bathe, and look presentable.”

You roll your eyes, “Forgive me, your majesty,” you sass, “it would appear I’ve left all of my fine silks and jewels on Asgard.”

Loki stands, and waves his hand over the bed. Through the reflects of green shimmer, appears a silk gown. Deep green in color, and far too revealing for your taste. “Now as for the jewels, I suppose I can make my pet a collar—“

“No.”

He smirks, “I thought not. Come, let us bathe.”

Your eyes widen, “I know how to bathe myself, and I can’t exactly run away down the drain, Loki.”

He opens the bathing room door, before turning back to you. “No, but these people seem to think I’m making you come undone in every conceivable way possible,” he husks, “and I can assure you, I would not be done yet. So I will stay with you a while longer, to maintain our ruse.”

You sigh, “You disgust me.”

Loki tuts, “Now, now. My pet would have the highest obedience. We’ll have to remedy that tongue of yours.” He runs his thumb across your bottom lip, and you have to resist the urge to bite it off.

“Bathe—now.” He orders.

You traipse past him into the bathing room. Sitting on the edge of the pool, you pull off your boots and your vest, pausing when you get to your tunic.

“Turn away.” You seethe.

Loki’s eyebrows raise, “It’s not like I haven’t seen a woman’s body before.”

“That may be true, but the only way you’re seeing this woman’s body is if you’ve developed the ability to see through clothing. Now turn away.”

...and he does. Which surprised the hell outta you.

Once you’re in the bath, you submerge you’re body fully under the milky water, leaving only your head visible. “Okay.” You announce.

Loki turns around and begins stripping off his clothing.

“What in the name of Yggdrasil do you think you’re doing?!” You shout.

“Bathing. I was in those dungeons for only a moment and I feel absolutely riddled with filth.”

You gasp and turn away when he reaches for his belt. “Absolutely not! There’s another bathing pool right there, Loki!”

He laughs, then you hear the water splash, and you can only assume he’s entered your pool. Lucky for you, it’s nearly 8 feet wide, so you tuck yourself into the far corner.

“Do you not recall the escapades of our youth? Bathing nude in the sea whilst the stars danced above us?” He croons, moving closer to you.

Loki reaches behind you, grabbing a wash sponge and hands it to you. “A lot has changed, Loki.”

The water ripples as he moves away from you again. “You’re right, and I intend to keep it that way.”

The milky water is above your bosom, shielding your body from his view as you wash yourself. While it’s not the most awkward thing in the world, considering how familiar you are with each other, it is unsettling.

“This is madness.” You mumble.

“Oh, pet,” Loki smirks, “The madness has not yet begun.”

Another round of TGD theories (no reviews and The Guest this time, because I’m feeling like shit and I can’t think. Give me 10 drinks, then we can talk.)

After the Chuseok cutoff, it’s hard to make any theories and that’s sad because two of my theories from last week were debunked. The ‘cliffhanger’ timings are all off due to this. I meant to discuss, but I don’t feel like it. Maybe in a few days when my brain works again.

If you’ve read my posts before, you know the drill: This Post Contains Ghost Detective Spoilers because I’m an asshole who has to reveal everything, so if you’re trying to avoid spoilers, don’t read until you’re all caught up. I have no idea how to write a goddamn show and I have no idea what I’m talking about, but I just love typing and talking and thinking and giving unsolicited opinions. No, seriously. Ask my friends.

How did Dail end up in the middle of the street?

Let's get one thing straight: the 'jump' between 'Dail in the interrogation room' scene and 'Dail in the middle of the street in broad daylight with bloodshot eyes and seemingly had sucked out the bad juju' scene is... drastic. So who did he meet in between these scenes?

Based on the first scene, Dail entered the interrogation room in the most dramatic way possible. He forcefully turned Deokjoong's face as he realised that the latter was mind-controlled by Hye because the sclera turned red (heh I slept in science class, so thanks Google). In order to turn Deokjoong's face, he has to touch him. Right, there was no pain response from Dail. Should he be in pain, the response would be immediate. Cut to: Jungdae in his superior's office. Then, we were greeted by a shot of Dail somewhere in Seoul with bloodshot eyes, black veins visible underneath his skin, in pain, and he looked lost.

It's worth noting that all the pain responses Dail has gotten were moments he touches ghosts like Hye and the tunnel ghosts. When it comes to the victims of mind control, like Deokjoong in the interrogation room and the boy at the hospital, Dail has made contact with them, and yet hasn't shown any signs of being affected by the pain. But why were his eyes red? He could touch ghosts without his eyes turning red. So this means he was angry, and his evil side emerged (since Evil!Dail will only make an appearance when he's angry).

What happened in between the two scenes? Who did he meet that made him angry and simultaneously sucked the bad jujus from? He can't meet Alive!Hye, because, at that point of the story, they have yet to cross paths. He won't be able to meet the tunnel ghost because the helpful half (Chaewon's spirit mother) is gone for good (or is she?)

Since TGD has a track record for answering theories (doesn't matter if they're debunked or turned out to be true), I should expect to find out about this bit because it's been bugging me. If the intention of this scene was used in a way to establish the moment of realisation where he had heard the tourism fair jingle, then it's a huge loss for the story. If it's left unanswered, then it will be a frustrating loophole, and we want to avoid that.

The 'Can Chaewon Hear Dail' Saga Continues (because it's been bothering me)

We've previously established that Chaewon is one of the mysterious characters in the show. This has led me to believe that one of my theories about her to turned out to be true: as much as she's the outgoing character we all have fallen for, she's secretive and has a dark past. In this section, we'll talk about how this very character fucks with my emotion and why I'm starting to doubt my formerly 'confirmed' theory.

In the last review/theories post and also on Reddit, I theorised that she hasn't told the truth about the ghosts she can hear or see hence, we get to see her interacting with the grandpa ghost in Ep. 7/Ep. 14. But in Ep. 8, she was in a 'conversation' with Dail (patience... we'll get to this), it seemed like she could only see the silhouettes of the ghosts and not hear them, just like how we see Dail through her eyes. As of now, it's conclusive she's able to see only ghost grandpa and the tunnel ghost.

...or is it?

[Dail enters the elevator. We don't see Dail, but we know Chaewon does.]

Chaewon: Did you find anything?

Dail: Sunwoo Hye isn't here. Maybe she already approached everyone and controlled them to commit suicide.

Chaewon: It's impossible to control many people at once.

[Dail does a double-take. He expects to be in a one-handed conversation because Chaewon can't hear him.]

Chaewon: [cont.] If that was possible, she should've done it when she was in a coma. Point 1

[Dail looks at her up and down in confusion.]

Dail: You can hear me? Point 2

[Chaewon smirks.]

Chaewon: You're quite taken aback, aren't you? Point 3

[Dail looks away. Possibly feels awkward, but definitely confused.]

Chaewon: [cont.] I don't know about anything else, but I know what you might want to ask me. Point 4

[At this point, Dail shoots her another bewildered look in her direction. After she says her line, he relaxes.] Point 5

Dail: We need to find out how she's going to try and kill everyone.

[An idea hits Chaewon.]

Chaewon: Let me tell you something I found out yesterday.

Okay, let's stop right there and try to analyse the italicised dialogues and action.

It sounded like she could hear him and replied his query. She answered his question and didn't even hesitate. Her timing was spot-on too. Interesting.

Dail looked genuinely perplexed. He wasn't sure if he heard her right. Honestly, same. For that one second, he seemed convinced that she could hear him and that she replied to his remark. Remember: she wasn't supposed to hear him, but we've seen her doing this before and it was revealed that she could see him... well, not like how Yeowool sees him, but you get the picture.

Again, she answered him, but in an indirect manner. Instead, she posed him a rhetorical question or Dail simply just couldn't reply because he was baffled. Yay vagueness! On the other hand, Chaewon also didn't answer him with a definite answer like "Yes, I could hear you all along!" and we don't know for certain if she could hear him. We know that she is secretive and we discover more about Chaewon when she thinks if it's appropriate for her or when someone finds out about her (examples: Yeowool instructing Sangseob to find out about Chaewon, and when Jungdae finds out about her ability as he peeks from afar.)

This one frustrates me because I'm not sure if it's something that gets lost in translation, or if I'm the one who just couldn't understand it. If it's the former, I'm not blaming the translators because these things happen and not everything is translatable. K-dramas have the tendency to use flowery, vague-ass language, and since we only have one line to work with, let's try to dissect it. I'll be honest: I don't see how that very line connects with their previous questions or remarks. What about Chaewon expecting Dail to ask her a question, and her knowledge on this 'thing' is limited? We might be able to look at it this way: she can't hear him, but anticipates questions from him; basically, she'll blurt whatever she thinks Dail wants to know. If that's the case, how could she be certain that's what answers his questions? And her reply to him ten seconds prior to this 'revelation' was very specific. From here, the Dail's-and-Chaewon's-conversation end up being a one-sided conversation once again. Is this the writer's way to tease (in both sense) the viewers?

And Dail lets his guard down. Why? Probably there are more important matters at hand? Could he realise that Chaewon was just pulling his legs? So far, Chaewon hasn't tricked him about her abilities and everything she said and had done reveals that she knows what she's saying and doing, and she had done it with purpose. If this character is just playing that 'Haha, got you!" card, then it's a waste of time and is directionless.

As I rewatch the flashback scene with Chaewon and ghost grandpa, she did make an attempt at talking to the ghost child by asking it a question. She asked, "What do you want?" before ghost grandpa interjected with the information about how the other ghosts died.

Once again, when it comes to revealing her secrets, Chaewon does them whenever no one's watching, especially without Yeowool, Sangseob and Jungdae around. By right, based on this elevator scene, this means she could hear him.

So, could she really hear Dail? Is Chaewon taking a shot at answering Dail's questions, hoping that she answers his question? Could she just be playful and tricking him?

Why is Hye still so powerful?

Trigger warning: mentions of suicide.

So... Hye's not dead? And she's committed to terrorise everyone's lives, especially our Korean Scoobies'. We have six episodes (or twelve episodes, depending on how you see it) left for this drama, and we've just witnessed what might be one hell of a stretch so far... but with worldbuilding (which is our keyword), anything is possible.

The biggest questions like why Hye is the murderous rampaging bitch she is and why is she adamant on killing everyone have been answered. I guess in this particular story, anger is justifiable for acts of violence and manipulation... by a 12-year-old. Young!Hye didn't want to die, so she switched the laced Coke with her father's and fessed up to Dail, saying, "Yes, I killed [my father]!" rather than rationalising it as an act of self-defence. What can a 12-year-old do except to feel angry about what she had done when she was alive? Also, what can a child rationalise?

I have to say I don't get why Deokjoong said those words because he was the only adult who was with her since the death of her family. This is why Hye was angry: to hear someone say that she should be killed and that she's not able to survive alone is disheartening. He was guilty of encouraging a traumatised 12-year-old to attempt suicide, and he hasn't made an attempt to rectify his words or tell her what she's done is wrong and it's not her fault. What the writer didn't explain was this: was Deokjoong an idiot that he didn't realise how damaging his words were, or was he under some kind of influence (at this point, not Hye's) to say those horrible things? Could it also mean that 12 years-old Hye misinterpreted what Deokjoong was saying?

Alright, let's talk about why Hye might be able to retain her psychic powers. (Again, this is worldbuilding and has got nothing to do with how real life operates. Duh.)

Theory 1: Dail realises and knows a fetch's powers are learned skills. For example, if you know how to build a table from scratch, you should be able to do it from scratch, regardless of your form as a person or a fetch. Like Dail, he's still a sharp detective, and he knows his shit even when he's a fetch because that's what he's good at. Whereas Hye who have been a fetch the majority of her existence is good at mind manipulation. What she learned as a ghost gets carried to when she's alive.

Theory 2: I've mentioned show Hye's a great manipulator, and how she tricked both Dail and Yeowool into believing that only one of them has the power to kill her. Let's say Dail was the one who wasn't supposed to kill her, and it's Yeowool who was supposed to do it (which I think is the truth), Hye wasn't 'properly' killed, and with him doing the deed, he entrapped her spirit. Someone who's been in comatose for 25 years is basically dead, for lack of better word, despite Deokjoong going out of his way to keep her alive, hence why he wanted Yeowool's body to become Hye's new host. But what had happened was that it was Dail who'd done it, and he used the weapon that killed Yirang. So back to Theory 1: because of this, she was able to return to her body along with her powers.

It's safe to say that in a fictitious story, in my aunt's words, the bad guys will have the advantage, and the good guys will need to struggle in order to defeat the bad guys. However, there's a downside to Hye being advantageous (alive and possesses mind manipulation powers).

I'm not going to pretend as if I liked this Alive!Hye thing. I genuinely don't like where it's going. We've seen Dail and Yeowool in distress in their attempts at defeating her, and Hye's always been the strongest, and just like a sadist, I love it. To end Fetch!Hye, it'll be an equivalent to a boss level fight. It would've been fun to watch them go through Hell in order to defeat her, and in return, we'll be able to see better characters' development especially Dail, Yeowool, Sangseob, and Chaewon. It could be done with the involvement of Dail's newfound powers; how he insists on gaining and perfecting the powers he gain, and he ends up being an evil spirit (because we can't all win.)

Alive!Hye's appearance was great -- it created a buzz. Despite it being exciting, I can't help to feel like the writer chickened out from a crazy yet effective plan because they can't outline what will lead to the final battle. It's too easy to kill Alive!Hye, but had it been harder, it'd be worthwhile. For the sake of the story in a long run, it's a half-hearted and desperate attempt to find an easy way out/way to end the story after what the writer had panned out at the beginning of the drama which was very promising.

NUS Module Review (GEM) - GET1050 GER1000 GEQ1000

Hi! So here’s my first module review on the various General Education Modules (GEM) that I’ve taken so far :) currently I’m only a year two undergraduate at FASS in NUS, and I’ve only taken the ones allocated to me – GER1000, GEQ1000 and GET1050. (I have also taken GET1029 as a UE but since it is also philosophy introductory module, I’ll cover that in another review!)

As you may already know, all NUS students are required to clear the five pillars of GEM which are meant to enrich the student with different forms of thinking, knowledge and abilities beyond one’s own specialisation. The five pillars being Human Cultures (GEH), Asking Questions (GEQ), Quantitative Reasoning (GER), Singapore studies (GES) and Thinking and Expression (GET). *note that for Residential Colleges there might be replacement modules instead

Generally, all NUS undergraduates are allocated GER and GEQ and can choose from various modules from different faculties/majors to make up for the other pillars. For FASS students, however, we are allocated with GET1050 (previously GET1031A) which is computational reasoning. 

For this review I’ll talk about what the module is about, the components that made up the grading and any relevant tips if I have any :) I wish to say that these are all my personal opinions and if you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact me!

 GER1000 Quantitative Reasoning

GER1000 is a compulsory stats module for all NUS undergraduates. The module has a flipped classroom style which means that all lectures are based online. Students are required to watch and learn from the videos (which are pretty lengthy) before attempting the tutorial questions and online quizzes. The lecturers for the videos change accordingly to the topic and I had some difficulty understanding some of the videos due to their accents. Thankfully, there are slides and speakers’ notes provided so that helped for reference.

Tutorials are once every two weeks and I would suggest for one to attempt and complete the assigned tutorial work as tutorial participation and attendance make the final grade. In addition to online quizzes and tutorials participation/attendance, there is also a group project and final examination. For the group project, students are to choose from the various case studies provided and provide data analysis and present it in a ~10 mins presentation with Q&A. And, for those wondering, your groupmates are allocated so it all depends on your luck :/ For the final paper, it is a closed-book examination but there will be ample time for you to complete it as (if I remember correctly), it is 2 hours long with only 30+ MCQ.

Tip: Do take note that on NUSmods (which is a website NUS students generally use to view available modules/ lectures and tutorial slots/ plan their timetable in general) the module code for students taking it in hall is GER1000H. This “H” refers to hall, and NUSmods will show you the tutorial slots available within hall. Generally, I would advise students to go for tutorial slots within hall compound as it is definitely more convenient.

Also, ask around from your seniors if they have any past year papers for you to practise with for the final examination, except from some that are out of syllabus, the questions styles are usually repeated.

Generally, the bellcurve is pretty steep and many FASS students around me s/u this. However, don’t give up so easily! The group project and final exam can really help one do well as well :)

 GEQ1000 Asking Questions

GEQ1000 is also a compulsory module for most NUS undergraduates. I’m not too sure on this but I think some of my friends from RC took some replacement modules instead of this. This module is a CS/U module which means it’s pass-fail by nature so it’ll contribute to one’s completed module credits but not one’s Cumulative Average Point (CAP). This is also quite a low-effort module so I would suggest for one to maximise this. Personally, I overloaded with another module so I could take advantage of this.

Similar to GER, GEQ1000 is also a flipped classroom style with online lectures. The module consists of lectures that spanned across the various majors. There was philosophy, user-design, computational thinking, economics, physics and engineering. The module introduces various methods of questioning, thinking and solving problems based on the differing approaches of the various disciplines. Students are encouraged to watch the lecture videos before going for the tutorials, which are once every two weeks. Tutorial participation and attendance contribute to your final grade. However, because there are SO many components and subcomponents, I didn’t really bother with active tutorial participation that much (on top of that, I had an 8am tutorial so I wasn’t really in the mood…)

Other than tutorial participation and attendance, there is online forum posting, online quizzes, wallet-designing assignment, origami folding exercise to be handed in during one of the tutorials and a final reflection paper. As this is a CS/U module, most people do not put in a lot of effort. And, there is really no need to if you’re tactical about sharing your precious time studying for your other modules. I’ve heard that some people would forgo e.g. the wallet designing assignment because they calculated and decided they can pass even without it.

Personally, I did not really think the tutorials were that interesting or critical in my understanding of the module. However, I genuinely enjoyed myself learning about the various topics that I wouldn’t usually be exposed to due to my faculty and major. So I guess, I’m thankful for knowing more about game theory/ pancake flipping and many more other theories which I haven’t come across before this.

 GET1050 Computational Reasoning

The “GET” pillar is usually not allocated and students are free to choose a module of their choice to clear this pillar EXCEPT FASS students. As the name suggests, this module is about using computational methods of thinking to solve issues. And the million dollar question comes up – does it involve coding? – yes, yes it does and teaches us VBA (s a v e  m e  T.T). In case you’re panicking and shaking in your pants, don’t worry. Even though this sounds pretty much a nightmare for most arts students, this module (which is revised from the earlier GET1031A Computational Thinking) is catered for FASS students and designed by a philosophy lecturer. Even though I practically struggled through it, I can really tell the effort made to simplify what might be very daunting to arts students.

This module is very new – in fact, my batch is the first to take it. This also means that a lot of calibrating and adjustments were made to the grading components, assignments and even the lecture videos. One really remarkable point I have to make is that I really, genuinely appreciate the effort that the lecturer puts into this module and understanding the concerns of students. Jonathan, the lecturer, encourages all the 800 students enrolled in the module to send an introductory email to him for him to get to know us better. On top of that, students are required to do a pre-module survey for him to understand our level of ability regarding coding and whatnot. (He shared that most students replied that we had ZERO knowledge of it, which is sadly the truth) Moreover, he also had weekly clinic sessions to address queries face-to-face and a telegram group for the ease of communication among the students, TA, and himself. This is a true testament of a lecturer who tries his best at understanding the needs and issues of the students venturing on the unchartered terrain of computing/coding :’) very admirable

Not going to lie, this module was very helpful and really considered the general beginner status of many FASS students. This module also has online lecture videos and tutorials once every two weeks. The lecture videos were very helpful and the learning curve is pretty gradual. However, many students feedbacked that there was just too much work to be put into this supposedly level 1 module. The components included online quizzes, tutorial attendance and participation, forum posts, survey participation bonus, a group project with four checkpoints (aka submissions) and a final paper. PHEW…even writing it all down was serious business.

Generally, I was alright with most of the components. Online quizzes were once every two weeks, deadlines were also adjusted if Jonathan needed more time to produce and upload the lecture videos. Tutorials were very interesting and helpful in applying whatever we learnt in lectures to real-life situations that revealed moral/ethical issues regarding the mere use of computational thinking. Forum posts were kinda irritating as there PRE as well as POST forum posts that were graded very critically. But what really ticked me off was that the percentages for the various checkpoints were just too little for the amount of effort my groupmates and I had put in. Students are to choose from two datasets and provided with a dilemma to come up with various criteria/components to find the balance between maximising utility and fairness. In particular, for the final checkpoint, it was only 10% of the final grade, with 5% for the analysis and the other 5% for the presentation. However, the lecturer encouraged students to include skit, song, meme, VBA etc to score well. This was honestly – too much effort. My groupmates included certain elements to make our presentation more interesting but on hindsight, I don’t think I could be bothered with that 5%... Also, groupmates are allocated so it really depends on your luck again :’)

Despite it all, I really believe that I learn quite a lot from this module that is so unlike any other. Honestly, we are so used to believing that machines do not make any mistakes or that it is superior to mankind. But this module really brought about interesting ways of thinking about stereotypes, our prejudices, moral and ethical concerns regarding the dilemma of balancing fairness and maximising utility that machinery might not take into consideration. It also brings to light the importance of ARTS in a STEM-oriented world and the value of our disciplines in understanding and solving problems of the real world. I can still remember profoundly what Jonathan mentioned in the last tutorial – that he had a friend who missed out on a great career opportunity because he was not trained in coding :( and that he hopes that none of us would have to face this issue in the future.
