Day 6/100 of #100DaysOfWatercolorBotanicals 🌿🌊🏖If you are a left coaster and ever get an Echium candicans, don't plant it right up against anything. It will bush out quite a lot. This lovely plant is native to the Canary Islands and has beautiful blue flowers that give it the name Tower of Jewels (among others). These are all around Santa Cruz and Monterey though I got mine from a sweet old couple running a very wild and old nursery. It's my fave place to wander in the spring. This plant's leaves splay out around hearty stalks that are more spiral and less clumped as I painted them 🙄 I'm good at not taking a second or third look and going abstract rogues with my botanicals. . . . I forgot to post my #100DaysOfWatercolorBotanicals yesterday 😱 "Coachwhip" Ocotillo can grow 20 feet tall and are quite a stinking, odd sight in the desert. They have red, tubular flowers that cluster at the tip of their canes, which are covered in scary looking spikes. Cuter from afar, splendid from any view. ✨ Fouquieria splendens ssp. splendens ✨ is the only Fouquieria found in Arizona. @desert_dwellers By far the coolest plant I've ever seen. #plantnerd 🌿 Info from Plants of Arizona @falcon.guides (Best modern plant book! Day 10/100 of #100DaysOfWatercolorBotanicals (and a little teaser for the June happy mail shipment! 🌵) Back from Arizona and back to work! I can't begin to express how much I love the American Southwest. The geology, flora, fauna and plethora of different ecosystems and how everything relates is quite literally WONDERful. My only regret from our trips is not getting to meet up with Tucson and Phoenix friends. I guess that means another super southwest visit is in order! . . . Among the many different types of cacti I saw were saguaro, tons of prickly pairs, agaves/yuccas of all sort, different barrels, and LOTS of differently cholla (not as cute up close but one of my favorite cacti genus). I also got to meet ocotillo up close...much less intimidating from afar but one of the most amazing plants I've ever met!
