Six-Time Tony Winner Audra McDonald, reigning Queen of Broadway

In honor of the Tony nomination announcement today, it's about time I published this post I've had waiting for almost two months now. With 64 Divas in our tournament, they're practically drowning in Tonys. Collectively, 53 Divas have received one or more nominations across four eligible acting categories, and 31 have taken home the prize. And you'll never believe what tumblr's image limit is. 30.

As luck would have it, two Divas won Tonys in the same year and despite what might be the most dramatic height difference possible, Bebe Neuwirth and Janet McTeer were photographed together specifically so I could make this post work 27 years later. (Bebe in heels and Janet in flats, and still...)

Un clásico del terror: CHUCKY

Uno de los clásicos del terror es estrenado el 9 de noviembre de 1988 bajo el nombre de ‘Child’s Play’ o más conocido como ‘Chucky: El muñeco diabólico’. Este peculiar muñeco ha logrado un gran éxito, teniendo así una larga lista de películas incluyendo una serie.

CHILD’S PLAY

Película estrenada en Estados Unidos en el año 1988 nos cuenta la historia de Andy quien al ser fanático de los muñecos Good Guys  insiste a su madre para que le compre uno de estos simpáticos muñecos lo que no saben es que esto desencadenaría una serie de sucesos terroríficos en la familia, ya que el muñeco Chucky contiene el alma de Charles Lee Ray quien busca vengar su muerte, en la película se cuentan diversas situaciones en las que Chucky termina quemado y descuartizado por la madre de Andy.

CHILD’S PLAY 2

Estrenada en 1990 esta película narra la reconstrucción de Chucky y con esto como el alma de Charles Lee Ray vuelve al cuerpo, pero esta vez más cínico que antes. Chucky no solo busca su forma humana sino también vengarse de Andy quien ahora se encuentra con sus padres adoptivos, pero esto no dudaría mucho ya que Chucky mata no solo a los padres de Andy sino también a su maestra. Andy y su hermanastra Kyle atacan a Chucky cortando sus piernas y bañándolo en plástico, pero el final del muñeco llega cuando Kyle pone una manguera con oxigeno en su boca haciendo así que la cabeza de Chucky explote.

CHILD’S PLAY 3

Es estrenada en 1991 y nos cuenta que han pasado 8 años desde que Andy tuvo su última interacción con Chucky, Andy ha sido enviado a una escuela militar esperando empezar una nueva vida, pero no esperaba que Chucky volviera a la vida, sin embargo, esta vez teniendo en mira a una nueva víctima, Tyler. La película narra como Andy intenta detener diversos acontecimientos del muñeco en contra de Tyler, finalmente Chucky es atacado con una bala en el corazón, al querer atacar a Andy termina perdiendo su mano y cayendo a un ventilador gigante que lo corta en pedazos de esta forma matándolo.

LA NOVIA DE CHUCKY

Estrenada en 1998, narra la historia de como Tiffany Valentine, novia de Charles Lee Ray, rescata los restos de Chucky para reconstruirlo y traerlo devuelta a la vida utilizando el mismo hechizo vudú que utilizo Charles para meter su alma en el muñeco, pero este ritual falla, inesperadamente Chucky cobra vida y mata al novio actual de Tiffany. Ella emocionada con continuar su relación le muestra al muñeco un anillo que creía era de compromiso, Chucky aclara que solo fue un anillo que robo a una de sus victimas lo que inicia una pelea ya que Tiffany pensaba que él quería casarse con ella, así que decide encerrarlo y darle una muñeca vestida de novia, mientras ella tomaba una ducha, Chucky escapa y la mata, metiendo su alma en la muñeca de novia. Al final de la película Tiffany queda embarazada y da a luz a un bebe-muñeco.

EL HIJO DE CHUCKY

La quinta película estrenada en 2004 nos cuenta la historia de Glen, hijo de Chucky y Tiffany, quien al enterarse que se sacará al aire una producción basada en su padre y madre decide resucitarlos sin imaginar que esto desencadenaría diversos sucesos. A diferencia de sus padres Glen no quiere ser un asesino, sin embargo, después de varias situaciones Glen mata a su padre despertando así su lado malvado. Con Chucky muerto, Tiffany cambia de cuerpo con la actriz Jennifer Tilly quien estaba embarazada de gemelos, entonces deciden dividir el alma de Glen en los dos niños dando como resultado una niña con el lado malvado y un niño con el lado bueno. Cinco años después en el cumpleaños de los gemelos, reciben un paquete con el brazo de Chucky.

LA MALDICIÓN DE CHUCKY

Estrenada en 2013 nos narra la historia de Nica, una chica discapacitada que después de la muerte de su madre invita a la familia de su hermana para el funeral. Nica recibe un paquete que contiene un muñeco ‘Good Guy’ que claramente es Chucky. Alice, hija de la hermana de Nica, encuentra a Chucky y rápidamente le agarra cariño. Dentro de la familia comienzan a ocurrir muertes repentinas y Nica sospecha que el culpable es Chucky comenzando así una pelea entre ambos finalizando con policías en la casa, Nica declarada demente y Chucky siendo enviado nuevamente por correo hacia la casa de Alice, seis meses después, es enviado a la casa de un joven que reconoció, Andy Barclay, quien lo espera con una escopeta en la mano y le dispara en la cabeza.

CULTO A CHUCKY

La séptima película es estrenada en 2017 y gira entorno a Nica quien al ser declarada demente se encuentra en un psiquiátrico pensando que ha sido la culpable de las muertes ocurridas en ‘la maldición de Chucky’ pero cuando su psiquiatra utiliza un muñeco Chucky como método de recuperación se desata una nueva serie de homicidios. Andy se interna en el psiquiátrico y envía un muñeco ‘Good Guy’ con un arma por dentro, pero se entera que Chucky puede transferir su alma ha varios muñecos, todo en el psiquiátrico se descontrola y uno de los muñecos posee a Nica quien mata al doctor y huye del hospital junto a Tiffany.

CHUCKY: LA SERIE

La serie estrenada en 2021 gira en torno a los orígenes más oscuros de Chucky quien tiene el alma de Charles Lee Ray que busca venganza cobrando la vida de varias personas. En esta serie el dueño de Chucky es un chico llamado Jake, en la noche de Halloween Chucky decide ir por uno de los enemigos de Jake, obligando al mismo a tratar de detener al muñeco a toda costa.

By 1986, Bebe had a Tony Award and a solo Hirschfeld drawing to her name, and by 1997, she had another Tony and three more Hirschfelds from both stage and screen work. Hirschfeld had a sprawling collection of art not limited just to Broadway. And of course, the feature Hirschfeld most prominently exaggerated (though not by much) were her award-winning gams.

Bebe's Sardis portrait is, of course, her in character as Velma Kelly in Chicago. The style of her caricature seemed to bridge the change between the old-school exaggeration and comic features that made the drawings so distinctive, and the blander, homogenous styles of today. Bebe's portrait came a few years before the true shift began, and frankly, she's better off for it.

"Bebe Neuwirth," The Lights of Broadway, Autumn 2017 - Squigs

I've neglected to mention it so far, but each Squigs trading card comes equipped with a little "fun fact" section on the back. Most cards include a few biographical points, show credits, and a special "did you know?" With Bebe's return to Broadway this season, we can only hope we'll get another Squigs illustration to add to the list.
