Harry bites his lip, glancing over at him; his eyes are still on the horizon, so Harry lets his gaze linger for a moment. The chill has flushed the tip of his nose and apples of his cheeks pink, and he looks so painfully pretty that it makes Harry’s heart hurt; this close, he can see a few patches of close-shaven stubble Louis’ razor hadn’t quite cleared away, and belatedly it strikes him that Louis must have shaved specifically for this. He’d certainly had noticeable scruff when Harry had been shamelessly ogling at him through the huge festival screens lining the stage earlier in the day. His teeth sink into his bottom lip to temper the satisfied little smile that blooms at the thought of Louis taking the time to neaten himself up for a night out with Harry, the idea sating the endless pit of need that Louis ignites in him just enough to quiet it for a short while.

His personal assistant Zayn Malik suggests they lie low for a bit while Harry's agent cleans up the mess. Zayn's even got a suggestion: he has a friend named Liam that is a manager at a bed and breakfast/working farm in the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin. Once there, though, there's a complication: the owner of the bed and breakfast is a really attractive shifter by the name of Louis Tomlinson, who just wants a quiet life with his daughter Ariel. And, oh yeah, things are awkward between Zayn and Liam, and Louis isn't happy Zayn's staying with them.

Louis shoves an album booklet — Harry’s album booklet — into Harry’s hands, folded open to a familiar page. “I need you to tell me that that goddamn song is not about me.” His voice cracks a little in his vehemence, and ice fills Harry’s veins as he glances down at the creased page. He doesn’t need to look closely to know what it is Louis is talking about — the title is printed plainly on the page, Second Chances, along with every incriminating lyric, line by line. It’s his most blatant offense off the entire album, probably; sickeningly indulgent and too obviously vulnerable to even defend himself against. The song is a surface-level dip into the fantasy world Harry toys with when the ache of loneliness gets to be too much in the middle of the night, the brief glimpse already toeing over the boundary he’d promised himself he’d set for his career. Most damning, though, is the tiny embossed dedication at the bottom of the page; “For who I’d be if I wasn’t afraid,” Louis recites, looking expectantly at Harry. “What the fuck does that mean?
