[tv review] tos 1x15-1x19 (1966-67)
1x15 “shore leave”
you know kind of immediately if you’re going to like this episode or not. it’s incredibly silly, but i’m here for it.
also, while the episode as a whole is pretty disposable in terms of trek lore, there are two absolutely essential kirk/spock moments in here for shippers, so if that’s of interest to you at all i wouldn’t recommend missing this one. b-rank
1x16 “the galileo seven”
this is a spock-heavy episode and i’m almost always game for spock-heavy episodes. his commitment to peace and nonviolence is admirable, and for all the complaining everyone around him does, his logical approach really does give them the best chance of getting out of this extremely desperate situation. i might like more recent development of the character better than what we get here, but this is still one of the early tos episodes that has aged the most gracefully. in spite of the foam spears and styrofoam rocks. a-rank
1x17 “the squire of gothos”
kirk matches wits with a proto-q who has been observing humanity from afar and doesn’t realize that because of the speed of light he’s actually observing humanity from hundreds of years ago. so he has the personality of some imperialist general (retired). and like, i get that this isn’t any worse than a lot of episodes i like, but for this kind of silly bullshit it just kind of either clicks for you or it doesn’t, and for whatever reason this one has never clicked for me. c-rank
1x18 “arena”
maybe i have this one rated too highly, i won’t fight anyone on that. but i look forward to it every time i rewatch the series. and it’s not just because the gorn captain is hot af (but wow he’s hot af), but… yeah, okay, it is largely because the gorn captain is hot af. that’s fair. but come on, this episode is so iconic. a-rank
1x19 “tomorrow is yesterday”
the time travel is stupid and makes no sense, and it’s highly implied that it’s easy and they can casually use it again in the future (which does actually happen in a later episode). honestly this episode isn’t the worst or anything, and parts of it are pretty genuinely entertaining, but it’s definitely not one of my favorites or one i ever look forward to. it’s fine, though. it’s light & silly. the shot of the enterprise in the earth’s atmosphere being perceived by 20th century people as a ufo is adorable. it’s fine. c-rank

1x16 - The Galileo Seven
5/10. An interesting diversion from business as usual with this one, as Spock is sent on an away mission to an unknown quasar with six crewmen, including McCoy and Scotty, only for them to become stranded on a hostile planet. Back on the Enterprise, Kirk must contend with a Starfleet commissioner whose sole purpose is to remind the captain that his duty is to deliver medical supplies to a plague-ridden planet, no matter that some of his crew are missing. Spock takes control of command this episode, although it’s a struggle to do so with dissent rising in the ranks of his subordinates, all of whom are repulsed by his cold logician’s approach to survival. Even McCoy takes his turn stirring the pot, incredulous that Spock refuses to risk the surviving members of the crew in order to bury a dead one, for example. Lieutenants Boma and Gaetano, not-redshirted redshirts, question Spock’s decisions at every moment, suspicious of the fact that he’s not falling over himself in hysteria every time something goes wrong. It’s implied that they probably wouldn’t talk back so much to their superior officer had it been Kirk, or another human, regardless of the decisions made; the chain of command would be adhered to strictly, and should be in times of crisis, lest order collapse completely. They simply don’t trust his Vulcan instincts. McCoy does stand up for Spock later in the episode, and Scotty too, and upon the moment of escape even Boma risks everything to save Spock on a whim; but it’s all done in a manner that belies how superior they think their emotion-driven actions are when compared to logic. It’s fascinating looking at it through the lens of ableism and racism more than 50 years after it was written. (Obviously only contained in a fantasy setting, not comparable to real racism.) I’m sure many POC and neurodivergent people will be able to identify with the rigorous suspicion and interrogation to which Spock is subjected, when he’s only performing his job to its specifications. This is not to say Spock was 100% right all the time, as the story dictated he should have been more prepared to anticipate others’ emotions, instead of assuming everyone and everything will follow logic. But there are interesting parallels to explore.
Favourite quote: “What a mess.” / “Picturesque descriptions will not mend broken circuits, Mr. Scott.” - Scotty and Spock. // Proof that I manage to be both of them in a crisis. Simultaneously bemoaning the state of things while chiding myself for not fixing it sooner. The Enterprise crew really make up one whole functioning person, don’t they?

Uhura appreciation, continued.
Episode 1x15: Shore Leave. A very minor role as background on the bridge and over the comm.
Episode 1x16: The Galileo Seven. Her initial appearances are background on the bridge and trying to pull in a garbled message that the shuttle is off course.
Tumblr media
Midway through we get another interesting bit that shows what a fine bridge officer she is. She steps down from the Captain’s right, obviously coming from the science station, with an urgent report that there is a planet capable of sustaining life; the crew of the shuttle just might be alive.
Tumblr media
Later in the episode she works hard to try to establish communication, but regretfully the interference is just too severe. (Also why do visiting jackasses dignitaries always sit on her station? And how does she keep herself from kicking their asses for it?)
Tumblr media
Seriously the comm board is not for sitting! Nyota gently reports to the Captain that the search efforts are not going well. No doubt she just heard the Captain tell the log he is trying to come to terms with the growing certainty that the Enterprise, and he personally, has suffered a great loss.
Tumblr media
More time passes; Kirk is getting pissy. “How are the sensors?” he asks her. When Uhura starts to tell him about the last report he snaps at her: “I don’t care about the last report! I want to know now!” “Yes, sir,” she answers, turning swiftly to get a fresh report. It continues to get worse, and she reports to Kirk that a search party has returned with injuries and a fatality. Then the time is up; the ship must move on, and she relays the Captain’s order to abandon the search, her voice soft and regretful.
Tumblr media
As the search winds down, she steps up behind the Captain. This is clearly a position of support for her commander. As they leave, Spock employs his gamble, and they see the shuttle lit up in the atmosphere. Uhura whips around in her chair at Sulu’s excited cry, and whirls back around to order the transporter room to beam the crew aboard. They initially think they lost it until Uhura reports that the transporter room beamed up five persons, and relief sweeps across the bridge. (Setting aside that there were seven people who disembarked, but whatever, if anyone died it was a redshirt.)
Tumblr media
At the end, she stares significantly at Spock, along with everyone else. Spock pauses to look at her, and then practically rolls his eyes, discomforted by the attention, knowing they intend to point out his gamble. The episode ends Uhura laughs along with Kirk and McCoy at Spock’s insistence that his actions were completely logical. Oh, Spock!

Star Trek TOS Spock Whump List
First Officer Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy.
My favorites are in bold.
Season 1

1x2 Charlie X - both legs broken (very brief) then healed
1x4 The Naked Time - infected by alien virus, cries
1x16 The Galileo Seven - stranded on alien planet, crewmembers argue with him, sacrifices himself to help others escape (they don't let him) leg trapped by boulder, rescued, limping
1x29 Operation -- Annihilate! - infected by parasitic alien that attacks his nervous system, intense pain, fought twice, restrained, temporary blindness, worried friends
Season 2
2x1 Amok Time - extreme physical and emotional stress that will kill him in 8 days, fought, brief sadness
2x5 The Apple - poisoned, runs into force field, struck by lightening (second degree burns on back) pain
2x7 Catspaw - chained up in dungeon
2x10 Journey to Babel - difficult decision, gives blood, sedated, recovering in sick bay
2x19 A Private Little War - shot by primitive gun, helped to walk, unconscious, sick bay, worried friends, slapped in the face several times
2x23 The Omega Glory - hit by phaser blast, weak, worried friends
2x21 Patterns of Force - whipped, bloody marks on back, handcuffed, imprisoned (TW: this episode has depictions of Nazis)
Season 3

TOS 1x16: The Galileo Seven
Episode: The Galileo Seven (1x16)
Series: The Original Series
Original US air date: January 5, 1967
Tumblr media
Spock and some people (but mostly Spock) are stranded on a random planet with some random aliens that want to kill them. Spock tries to find a solution, but everyone hates him because he doesn’t fall to pieces and get all emotional about the situation.
Like, dude, he is a Vulcan. He is rational. He only gets emotional when under the influence of unknown substances. How did you ever get in the Starfleet without this basic knowledge? Bof.
Other than that, it is a truly enjoyable episode.

I’ve just noticed that Spock and Scotty gave each other high five in 1x16 - The Galileo Seven and I’m like “Probably it was too perfect to cut it but WHY A VULCAN GIVE HIGH FIVE?!?”
