INDY Daily: Senate GOP Proposes Slashing N.C. Corporate Tax Rate to Zero

Good morning, readers.

Republican state lawmakers have a lot of bad ideas recently, but here's one that's truly terrible: phasing out the state's corporate income tax.

That's right: North Carolina currently has the lowest corporate income tax rate in the nation at 2.5 percent but, under a new package of tax cuts introduced by Senate Republicans, that rate would dwindle to zero in five years resulting in a loss of billions of dollars flowing into the state's coffers.

Democrats have been quick to criticize the proposal.

"We have a once in a generation opportunity to invest in our schools, quality child care, small businesses, community colleges, transportation, housing, and tax cuts for families who really need it," said Ford Porter, a spokesperson for Gov. Roy Cooper in a statement. "The last thing we need is more sweeping tax breaks for corporations and the wealthiest among us instead of investments in our hard working families and communities."

Senate Democrats held a news conference yesterday to promote elements of Cooper's budget proposal that the governor unveiled in March. They're also pushing for the reinstatement of North Carolina's Earned Income Tax Credit, which was eliminated in 2014, to help low- or moderate-income families.

So, while North Carolina Republicans may feel like the state is flush with cash since we're sitting on a surplus of $5 billion as a result of the legislature's inability to negotiate a budget with Gov. Cooper for the last two years, the state actually has a lot of pressing needs the corporate income tax revenues could pay for.

Our public education system desperately needs some $8 billion in new investment. We've got climate and environmental crises to deal with, housing shortages, a broken unemployment system, and pressing infrastructure and transportation needs. Working class families are struggling hard to pay for things like childcare, young adults for higher education.

This is all to say slashing the corporate income tax rate down to zero is incredibly short-sighted and bad for the state. The money corporations save in taxes won't create new jobs or new opportunities; it will merely exacerbate the already gaping chasms in quality of life between North Carolina's richest residents and its poorest.

While police reform legislation has passed in 24 states since Floyd's killing, North Carolina is not yet one of those states. But a number of Republican-backed bills, including bills that mandate better training for officers responding to mental health calls, providing mental health resources for officers, a database tracking police officers' certifications and suspensions, and an obligation to report misconduct, look poised to pass in the General Assembly this session.

Interview with Kara Leigh Ford

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Kara, I live and work in Somerset, South West England. I am a full time potter making tableware and art from my studio at the bottom of my garden. My work is inspired by the textures and colours of the south west coastline. I live with my husband Tom and two rescue cats Luna and Flora.

When did you start working with ceramics and how did it all begin?

This is a bit of a long story, so here it is in a nutshell. I studied fine art at university but never touched clay until after I graduated in 2005. Due to the lack of jobs in the arts sector and no skills to speak of on how to making a living from being an artist I took a job in branding and marketing. I decided to do an evening class in pottery to keep my creative juices flowing - from that moment on I was hooked. Painting was always a source of frustration for me - I was never really able to get across what I wanted to say on canvas but clay afforded the extensity I was always looking for - seeing a lump of mud transform into a bowl was like alchemy to me. In 2014, a close friend of mine died of cancer - at the age of 32 - it was a huge wake up call that we only have one life. After much discussion with my family and friends - I packed in the career I had grown to resent and became a full time potter. With hindsight the marketing job gave me a lot of business skills the degree did not - how to build a brand, copy writing, budget management so I am actually very grateful for that time now.

Do you sell your work online?

I do indeed! I sell predominantly from my website karaleighfordceramics.com I also have an Etsy shop - and ship internationally.

What is your proudest moment to date?

Seeing my travel mugs for sale in Fortnum and Mason was a pretty mind blowing experience. I was asked to go and meet one of the buyers in their Piccadilly store - I don't think I have ever been so nervous. I also supply pottery to a restaurant in York called Le Cochon Avegule - they have been voted one of top 100 restaurants in the country - I am very proud that their exquisite food is served on my plates.

Tell us about your work space.

I originally began working from a tiny 9ft x 6ft shed painted like a beach hut - but soon out grew it. Last summer, I invested in a purpose built pottery studio. I have two wheels, lots of shelving and a beautiful reclaimed wood and gas pipe work bench. My original little studio now houses my two kilns.

What do you enjoy most about your job and what do you find challenging?

I love the freedom to create, I'm an introvert so love nothing more than spending my days in my studio playing about with new forms or discovering new glaze combinations. I find focusing on tasks quite challenging - I struggle to concentrate on one thing at a time and tend to waste time flitting from one project to another, this results in working longer days than I really need to - it's something I am working on. Im also very easily distracted by emails or social media plus dyslexia means writing is often a cause of anxiety.

What is success to you?

Success for me is a feeling or a state of being rather than a destination. It's all too easy to say: 'when my business reaches 50K followers on Instagram I'll be successful' or 'when I am turning over 60K a year I'll be successful'. I try and be really mindful about how lucky I am to do what I love every day.

What keeps you motivated?

Discovery and learning keeps me coming back to the potter's wheel/ work bench. There is so much depth to my craft, it would take many life times to explore it all fully but I am giving it a really good go.

Have you any particular goals for the future?

I want my business to be able to facilitate my life (not the other way round) - I want it to give me the freedom to travel and see the world, experience other cultures and truly make the most of my time on planet earth. I'd also love my business to be carbon neutral - it would be the dream to be able to run my kilns on solar power one day. I've already cut out 99% of plastic from my packaging.

Signal | 2: The Subconscious Mind

To start, we jumped straight into our project. We asked ourselves “what are we trying to do?” and “what is our brief going to look like?”. Whilst we didn't have any clear statements of intent to begin with, it quickly became clear that we both wanted to explore the commercial side of subliminal messaging, and especially how it works in advertising. We also decided to do up a timetable on the wall of our workspace, and give ourselves strict timelines to work with on the project.

The most pressing thing to focus on first of all was research. Neither of us knew ANYTHING about subliminal messaging outside of fiction (Namely the “Join the Navy” Simpsons episode), so we needed to find some concrete evidence that it worked, and that it could be used in advertising.

Firstly, the first search hit upon Googling “Subliminal Advertising” was the hoax created by Jame Vicary in 1957, where he claimed to have flashed brand logos inside movie showings in theatres. He claimed this increased coke sales by 18.2% and popcorn sales by 57.8% (Dylan Love, Business Insider, The Shocking Drink And Incredible Coke History Of Subliminal Advertising). Whilst this proved to be a hoax, this triggered a lot of research into subliminal advertising. Findings after this new research found that under certain situations, subliminal priming increased choices for certain brands, but it was largely influenced by the situation of the priming. (e.g. priming a certain drink brand was only effective when the participants being primed were thirsty). (Thijs Verwijmeren. Johan C.Karremans. Wolfgang Stroebe. Daniël H.J.Wigboldus. (April 2011). Working & Limits of subliminal advertising, p1). Arguably, strong pre-existing brand loyalty restricts the effectiveness of priming competitor brands ( (Thijs Verwijmeren. Johan C.Karremans. Despite this, remarkably findings showed that AFTER the priming, the participants were actually more likely to choose the primed brand over the habitual (or brand loyal) brand. ( (Thijs Verwijmeren. Reading through a lot of this research was extremely helpful, as it gave me some direction to look further into Priming as a whole, rather than just subliminal messaging.

This prompted me to look into the differences between conscious and sub-conscious thought processes. A quote that stuck with me was “Conciousness is the faculty of an individual’s senses and reasoning” (Robert C. Ford. (March-April 2014). Prime Time: The strategic use of subconscious priming to enhance customer satisfaction. p3, 271). Research done into priming groups of participants who didn’t know what they were being observed in regards to. Participants were asked to circle words relating to the elderly on a large list, (e.g. “old”, “kind”, “slow”, “wrinkles”) and then observed when leaving the room to the elevators. This actually resulted in an observed change in movement speed; compared to the control group, the test group all walked to the elevators noticeably slower. (Robert C. Ford. (March-April 2014). Prime Time: The strategic use of subconscious priming to enhance customer satisfaction. p3, 271) . This is especially interesting to me, as it tells me that priming can even be used to affect people’s physical actions as well as sub-conscious decisions.

A question to keep in mind: Sub-Permanence of brands; Are dominant brands more or less susceptible to priming than their competitors?

Perhaps a Test to look into could be showing two groups different videos, one featuring largely red images and colours, and the other doing the same with blue. Afterwards, leading the groups into a room with Pepsi and Coke and observing wither the blue primed group chose more Pepsi over the red primed group? Something to look into during play-testing I guess.

On top of this, perhaps a look into Colour Theory is needed to understand how different colours can illicit different reactions and trigger different emotions from people.

September 15th

2019 - Ric Ocasek

Ric Ocasek the former lead singer with The Cars was found dead in his New York City apartment, he was 75. The Cars formed in Boston in the mid-1970s by Ocasek and band-mate Benjamin Orr after they met at high school. Their early hits included 'Just What I Needed', 'My Best Friend's Girl' and 'Good Times Roll'. Their 1984 ballad 'Drive' was used as background music for footage of the Ethiopian famine, and its re-release as a single after Live Aid helped raise money for the cause. After the band broke up in the late 1980s, Ocasek embarked on a solo career as well as working as a producer for artists including Weezer, Bad Religion and No Doubt.

2019 - AC/DC

The Cook Islands, a nation in the South Pacific, released two silver coins to honour two classic AC/DC albums. The band’s landmark 1981 album ‘For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)’ was honoured on a two dollar coin while 1990’s ‘The Razors Edge’ could be found on a ten dollar coin. Both feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse side.

2014 - U2

Apple released a tool to remove U2's new album from its customers' iTunes accounts six days after giving away the music for free. Some users had complained about the fact that their latest album Songs of Innocence had automatically been downloaded to their devices without their permission.

1997 - U2

A 34 year old man was awarded more than £20,000 by a French court after he lost his hearing when he stood too close to loudspeakers at a U2 concert in 1993.

1990 - Steve Miller Band

The Steve Miller Band had a UK No.1 with 'The Joker' 16 years after it's first release. The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974. More than 16 years later, it reached No.1 in the UK Singles Chart after being used in "Great Deal", a Hugh Johnson-directed television advertisement for Levi's, thus holding the record for the longest gap between transatlantic chart-toppers.

1975 - Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd released their ninth studio album Wish You Were Here in the UK. The album which explores themes of absence, the music business, and former band-mate Syd Barrett's mental decline peaked at No.1 on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to spend a total of 84 weeks on the chart.

1970 - Spiro Agnew

US Vice-President Spiro Agnew said in a speech that the youth of America were being "brainwashed into a drug culture" by rock music, movies, books and underground newspapers.

1968 - The Doors

The Doors were forced to perform as a trio at a concert in Amsterdam after singer Jim Morrison collapsed while dancing during the Jefferson Airplane's performance.

1967 - The Beatles

Filming continued for The Beatles 'Magical Mystery Tour'. Lunch was at James and Amy Smedley's fish and chip shop in Taunton, Somerset with The Beatles being filmed and photographed eating their fish and chips.

1966 - Small Faces

The Small Faces were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'All Or Nothing', their only No.1 hit. According to Kay Marriott, Steve Marriott's mother, Steve wrote the song about his split with ex-fiancee Sue Oliver, though first wife Jenny Rylance states that Marriott told her he wrote the song for her as a result of her split with Rod Stewart.

1965 - Otis Redding

Otis Redding released his third studio album Otis Blue. The album mainly consists of cover songs by popular R&B and soul artists, and, bar one track, was recorded in a 24-hour period over July 9/10 1965 at the Stax Recording Studios in Memphis, Tennessee and includes the classic tracks 'Ole Man Trouble", 'Respect', and 'Down in the Valley'.

1965 - The Ford Motor Company

The Ford Motor Company became the first automaker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for their entire line of vehicles on sale in the US. Tapes were initially only available at auto parts stores, as home 8-track equipment was still a year away.

1962 - The Four Seasons

The Four Seasons started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Sherry', it made No.8 in the UK. They became the first American group to have three No.1's in succession.

1961 - The Pendletones

A group from Hawthorne, California called The Pendletones attend their first real recording session at Hite Morgan's studio in Los Angeles. The band recorded 'Surfin', a song that would help shape their career as The Beach Boys.

1956 - Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley started a five-week run at No.1 on the US charts with 'Don't Be Cruel'. The track went on to become Presley's biggest selling single, with sales over six million by 1961. This “double-sided hit” which had 'Hound Dog' on the B side, became the most successful on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. One side reached No.1 on the chart, the other No.2. The two titles spent a combined 55 weeks in the Top 100 in 1956-1957.

Creative Careers | Three Early-Career Filmmakers on Audience-Building and Engagement

With help from Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, we explore the relationship of three filmmakers to their audiences.

Films are created for audiences to experience, and audiences in turn are essential to a filmmaker’s career. With help from Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of The Film Society of Lincoln Center, we explored the relationship of three filmmakers to their audiences.

In a new short video series, Flavio Alves, Eliza Hittman, and Yance Ford share unique insights around finding and interacting with audiences. They touch on topics including the use of social media, working with outreach partners, making personal appearances, and making themselves part of the distribution campaign. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Yance Ford is director of Strong Island, winner of the “Special Jury Award for Storytelling” at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. He graduated from Hamilton College in 2004, and studied film in the Production Workshop at Third World Newsreel. He is a Sundance Institute Documentary Program Fellow, a MacDowell Colony/Fledgling Fund fellow, a Creative Capital Grantee, and he has been featured in Filmmaker Magazine's “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Ford is a former Series Producer of POV, the PBS documentary series. Strong Island was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018 and is currently in the running for Emmy Award in documentary filmmaking. It is Ford’s first film.

Flavio Alves is a Brazilian who was granted political asylum in the United States in 1998. Shortly thereafter he attended Columbia University, where he earned a degree in Political Science. In 2007, Alves returned to school to study film production at New York University. Since then, he has directed and produced more than 20 films, including the award-winning short films, The Secret Friend (2010), and Tom in America (2014), which was named “Best Short Film” by the National Board of Review. His first feature film, The Garden Left Behind, is Fiscally Sponsored by NYFA and will premiere in the fall of 2018. It is the first film to be funded substantially though sales of donated items on eBay.

Eliza Hittman grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn. She received a BA degree in theater and drama from Indiana University in 2001 and an MFA degree from the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts in 2010. Her short film Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight (2011) premiered at Sundance. Hittman was nominated as “Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director” at the Gotham Awards and for the “John Cassavetes Award” at the Indie Spirit Awards for her first feature, It Felt Like Love (2014). Her second film, Beach Rats, won the Directing Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018. Hittman teaches at Pratt Institute.
