I do my best writing inside the Empire Toyota of Huntington Service Center waiting room. I am very diligent about maintenance and oil changes, so much so that a mechanic in Brooklyn once told me “this is the most well-preserved Camry I have ever worked on.” Within six months of living on Long Island, however, that superlative belongs to some other car.

“You got a rodent living in there.” the Huntington mechanic said. “Look.”

The hood was open on my silver 2017 Camry. I bought it used with 10,000 miles on it. My previous car was a 2006 Jetta (manual; thank you for your patience, Dad). When I began my search for the car, I typed “Jetta used near me” into Google. Google immediately sent me ads for Cadillacs. Excuse me. You know the other things I’ve been Googling, Google! No one who bought a Cadillac also recently searched “Megan Man X2 Boss Order?”

The mechanic had walked me through the garage, past several open hoods of healthier cars, to show me my car, hovering slightly off the gray epoxy floor, held up by a bright yellow two-post lift. It felt like I had been asked to identify a body in the morgue. The tires were removed and he pointed at the visible rings of rust.

Over the annoying anti-rhythm of impact wrenches whirring, he yelled: “that’s where the brakes meet the tires. Bad!”

The car had been shaking at stop lights both when I braked and when I began moving again. I had ignored it until now, hoping everything would be magically fixed at this garage in under an hour without my acknowledging the problem. No dice. I was going to be there most of the day. Thankfully, I don’t mind sitting in a room while NY1 plays in the background and I’m free to treat the time I’m required to wait like I’m in adult detention. Between waiting for a car to be serviced and waiting in that big room to potentially get called for jury duty, it’s tough to pick a better spot where I can simply think. I guess I could go to the library, but who has the time?

As a bonus, there is a Starbucks touchscreen coffee maker near the bathrooms of the Empire Toyota of Huntington Service Center. I think about this machine from the second I make my car’s service appointment. When I’m at home selecting a time to go in, I’m trying to sync it with a normal (for me) coffee break. When I’m driving to the service center, I’m thinking about that double cappuccino I’m going to get. When the Toyota rep whose job is to sit me down in a tiny office and calmly deliver the news that I’m about to get gouged fixing those tires, I’m thinking about the coffee. When I’m approving $850 worth of repairs with my signature, I’m wondering whether there will be more than one choice of bean on that day’s screen, whether I should add a Sugar In The Raw packet this time around.

And when I finally sit down to drink that coffee, free of any responsibility for 2–5 hours, I can get to work writing the next great novel or TV pilot. Or a shitload of texts and tweets.

have seen the "you really bought a tesla?" post a couple times now and it's another one of those things that I think people often have misconceptions about

1. the cheapest Tesla (model 3) was the world's bestselling electric car from 2018 to 2020, when it was ousted by the 2nd-cheapest Tesla (model Y). the model Y was the single best selling car in the world in the first quarter of 2023. they are very popular.

2. the cheapest Tesla is $40,240 new. with the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles, a price tag of $32,740 puts it on par with the Honda Odyssey minivan's base price or with slightly nicer trims of SUVs like the Subaru Outback or Toyota RAV4, and only about $100 more than a new Prius Prime. People in California may also qualify for an additional $2000-$5000 rebate for buying one, bringing the price down to $27,740 - just $1000 more than a new Toyota Camry.

3. the concerns about safety are often weighted against an incorrect baseline - so far, current data show that electric vehicles aren't more likely to catch fire in an accident than gas vehicles and are actually less likely to do so (but this is difficult to get solid data on. there's a bunch of articles reporting on a study by an insurance company showing a massive reduction in fire risk but the underlying data are highly suspicious).

4. the big point of distrust that I think is grounded: recalls. some of the 22 (22!) model 3 recalls are ~trivial, like "the driver's side sun visor may be missing the airbag warning sticker", but some are more serious, like "the airbags might not be correctly connected to the car." it seems like a lot of the issues have been addressed on the current (2023-2027) line, but the recurring problems with things ranging from minor software issues to pretty serious function issues are good cause for concern. None of the ones I've read about seem as severe as Toyota's "oops the accelerator gets stuck and your car can't stop moving forward" recall or Ford's "oops the engine explodes" recalls [plural], and even the worst ones are on par with things we've seen before especially from US automakers (glaring at Ford, GM, and Ford again). Ford and GM are both guilty of continuing to use known bad parts for >5 years with (in one case) thousands of fires and (in another) over a hundred deaths. moreover, GM's Bolt EV is under a 100% recall for the 2017-2022 model years for high fire risk and Ford recalled over 100,000 hybrids for fire risk - so is Tesla worse than GM or Ford? I don't know if I'd say that, but I'd really want a car I buy to live up to a higher standard.

in short, the most popular teslas by a huge margin are the two most affordable ones, which are fairly accessible to consumers (especially in California). the risk of a tesla exploding or catching on fire is not, as far as I can tell, higher than other cars (and it appears to be less likely per million miles traveled than some other EVs on the market). teslas still have a bunch of quality issues, and they still have some stupid design choices - but you can easily buy a shittier car for a lot more money, particularly an American-made one.

Car sales continue their slow decline in the U.S. in 2017, although that same year the Camry is all new (and labeled a 2018 model). America's best-selling car ranks seventh in 2018 sales overall when trucks and SUVs are factored in. Other Camry sales-beaters include the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Ford F-150. In 2020, sales took a 13 percent drop, thanks to the global pandemic that put the world in park. Camry sales in 2021 were a better showing. With a total of 313,795 units of the family sedan sold in the U.S., the Camry took the sixth spot in overall sales. What’s the difference between OBDSTAR X300 Classic G3 and Autel IM608? Which one is better?

This post will compare them in Immobilizer, Diagnostics, Remote Keys, Chips & MCUs, Gateway, Motorcycles, Add-on function and update aspects.

Similarity:

Both support immobilizer function.

Differences:

1.Immobilizer

X300 Classic G3 is for IMMO and programming.

Autel has been on the market for many years before the G3. G3 is a new product. So the database of Autel is a bit more robust on the outside.

For example:

Program 2016/2017 Toyota Camry, the key was just fine but when into the remote programming it did not work under the Camry menu. In fact, it is capable of doing it but it most likely has to do with the market difference from the Asian market to the US market, you can program the remote function under the GT86 Toyota and that’s cable to program the remote just fine.

But under directly under Toyota Camry it did not work.

But OBDSTAR will out the R & D behind it and adds all the vehicles as well.

You can see the list of all the vehicles supported on the immobilizer side and it is pretty good. Another thing is that OBDSTAR has no Mercedes support yet, OBDSTAR said they are working on it.

IM608 has good coverage. IM608 not only programs the keys but is an excellent scanner and can program other units like ELV, dashboard, EZS, Skin, and ECU.

2.Diagnostics

Autel IM608 is also a full-fledged scanner, not just an immo programming tool.

It has a full-fledged diagnostic tool built in so it does take advantage of that. It has very good diagnostic capabilities and covers the Euro/Asian/US & Australian markets very well.

G3 is not a full-fledged scanner.

3.Remote Keys

MaxiIM IM608 will also generate Autel universal ikey remotes, but OBDSTAR doesn’t support remote generation.

4.Chips & MCUs

Autel has a bigger database to that than the G3.

It has a much larger database of chips and MCUs.

It can read and write a lot of chips and MCUs with the XP400 pro programmer.

The database on the amount of actual chips that OBDSTAR supported is not very extensive at the moment. This is a new tool. This is being added to the monthly things.

5.Gateway

OBDSTAR X300 G3 has built-in FCA Chrysler Fiat, Renault and CAN FD gateway connectors, you don’t need to buy separate gateway adapters.

You can use it to connect the compatible vehicle directly into the gateway like that bypass the gateway. Very convenient!

6.Motorcycles

The G3 also does motorcycles and aquatic Vehicles.

The G3 comes with motorcycle cables so you get all these cables for Ducati, Yamaha, Harley, BMW, Honda motors, etc. You’ll be able to program all these vehicles with the OBDstar.

Autel does not have it. It does not do motorcycles and aquatic vehicles.

7.Add-on function

OBDSTAR G3 is a flagship device you can add on all the other features. You can add odometer correction, airbag reset, test platform and ECU cloning license to the G3. It wins Autel MaxiIM IM608!

All these features are not available on the Autel.

OBDSTAR G3 License

G3 can add the same feature to clone as dc706. If you go to Advanced ECU where this tool starts to blow away everything else.

There is no competition, to be honest.

ECU license allows you to write the PIN to it, you can also write the VIN, change the VIN number, and correct mileage for some ECUs, G3 can do immo off on certain ECMs.

You can reset the VIN on the radio you see so if you get a used radio and then it gives you VIN locked you can reset it.

When going to the ECU flasher if you add on the cloning function, it handles different modules as well as body control modules. You can clone them and once you enter into these modules you can read them and modify the units.

They are good on GM ACDelco ECUs, it also does Fiat IAW 9DF, Chrysler GPEC2/3/2A, Hyundai SIM2-50, etc.

They have very good wiring diagram pictures.

The test platform function allows you to do is to actually send the message over the CAN BUS network and actually turn that cluster on or activate different modules that are activated via messages and not just simple powers and ground.

8.Update

OBDSTAR updates the software every month, and more vehicles are added.

If your subscription expires, you can use OBDSTAR G3 normally, but you will not get updates.

If your subscription expires, functions that require online access will not work on IM608, for example, Mercedes online password calculation, you cannot get new updates either.

Of course, you will need to renew your subscription to get current updates on both tools.

X300 Classic G3 software subscription is cheaper than Autel.

In a word, both X300 Classic G3 and Autel IM608 are good key programmers, and both support IMMO. The main difference is in the Database. It is a lot more extensive on the Autel IM608. IM608 wins G3 on IMMO!

OBDSTAR is a very good compliment to the Autel. You can grab the OBDSTAR every time is a late-model Dodge Ram. 23-24. Autel takes a long time to pull the pin and fails to program keys. The OBDSTAR pulls the pin in seconds and programs the keys very fast as well. No Mercedes support yet, OBDSTAR said they are working on it.

Toyota Corolla (1993-Present)

This post continues to show how the Corolla changed from being a standard compact car in 1993 to being one of the most best-selling cars in the world by 2020.

1993-1997 Toyota Corolla (E100)

The E100 generation was a much larger, heavier, and more aerodynamic car, than the E90 Corolla generation. It had also moved into the class of compact cars, taking the place of the Corona and the Camry.

1998-2002 Toyota Corolla (E110)

The E110 generation shared the bodystyle (and even doors on most variants) as the previous generation of Corolla. For this generation, the Base, XLi, GLi, and SE-G trim levels were introduced as well.

2003-2008 Toyota Corolla (E120/130)

The E120/E130 Generation came with a longer wheelbase. This generation of the Corolla in particular, was designed as a global car to suit the market needs of different countries, which helped it become one of the most popular generation of Corollas ever sold. This generation also sparked the production of the Toyota Matrix hatchback, which sold in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

2009-2013 Toyota Corolla (E140/E150)

This generation of Corolla was based on the E120 generation, which is seen by the similar designed bodystyle and doors. However, the E140s which were sold in the U.S. (and most of Asia) used the wider version of the E140 platform, while South Africa and other countries were sold the E150 edition. This generation of Corolla shared similar styling components to both the Camry and the Yaris, and overall improved in driving conditions compared to the previous generation. In the 2011 model, not only was the Corolla given a slight facelight (with new front and rear designs as well as changes to the interior). The XLE and XRS trims were discontinued in the U.S.

2014-2019 Toyota Corolla (E170/E180)

For this generation, the Corolla had an increase in the length of its wheelbase. The front and rear design for the North American E170 was based on the Toyota Furia concept car. This generation was offered in the L, LE, S, and introduced the LE Eco as well. The Corolla had also become the world's best-selling car by this point. By the 2015 model year, a Special Edition Corolla, based on the S trim was introduced, and in the 2017 model year, not only was the S trim replaced with an SE trim, the XSE was introduced as well the Corolla recieving new exterior paint options.

2020-Present Toyota Corolla (E210)

The current generation of the Corolla to date includes a hatchback and station wagon variations in addition to the sedan. In the 2022 model year, the Corolla introduced a GR Corolla based on the hatchback. The L (or base model) was dropped for this generation in the U.S. and the Corolla remains the best-selling sedan in the world with 1.6% of the market.

A categoria de turismo na Argentina que corre há muito tempo com carros com bolha do Chevrolet Coupe SS, Dodge Cherokke e Torino , Ford Falcon , decidiu atualizar seus carros e com a entrada da Toyota , para carros mais atuais , a Ford com Mustang, Chevrolet com Camaro e Dodge com o Challenger e a Toyota com o Camry, já o Torino que é um modelo muito tradicional na Argentina , solução foi pedir que designers imaginassem como seria se ele fosse fabricado atualmente.
