The gearbox has a longer throw compared to the Honda Civic Type R, but this allows the turbos to spool up before shifting to the next gear. The Valour doesn't lead its class in any particular area, and that's part of its charm. Its electrically assisted steering doesn't match the feel of a McLaren, and its suspension doesn't offer the refined balance of ride and handling provided by modern twin-valve dampers. As an ardent fan who’s owned three GTIs over the last 15 years, few new car launches get me as excited as a new generation of the iconic hot hatch. The Mk8 2022 model ushers the GTI into a high-tech new era while retaining that raw, analogue driving feel intrinsic to its DNA.

Ever since the first Mk1 GTI introduced the concept of an attainable, performance-oriented “hot hatch” to the masses in 1976, driving enthusiasts have had a new affordable toy. Balanced, Playful Handling Remains Core Strength Through sweeping curves of my favorite SoCal canyon routes, the GTI stayed planted and lively. The new VAQ limited-slip differential meant I could really lean on the accurate steering and impressive grip levels from wider tires before gentle understeer curbed my momentum. Adaptive dampers on certain trims add greater compliance in comfort mode too. It’s still the trusty Front-wheel drive balance that makes the GTI so satisfying to chuck around bends. Gearbox Options to Suit Any Driver Stick-shift fans can rejoice as VW retained the standard 6-speed manual for ultimate involvement, with auto rev-matching helping smooth shifts. But most will opt for the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic that suits the GTI’s torque-rich character - snappy, smart shifts to better accelerate but still highly responsive using paddles. I’d welcome the manual’s added driver connection, but won’t mourn losing the DSG’s convenience in traffic.

How Rivals Compare

Having tested the latest Civic Type R and Hyundai i30 N Performance, the Mk8 GTI keeps pace with these FWD heavies while undercutting entry prices. The Honda and Hyundai build on front-drive with their less-sophisticated platforms by adding power or handling sharpness – turning up extremes where the GTI takes a more holistic approach. Cost Benefit Analysis of Commuting to UCI versus Living on campus over the course of an academic year

Cost benefit analysis is defined by: 

“A cost-benefit analysis is the process of comparing the projected or estimated costs and benefits (or opportunities) associated with a project decision to determine whether it makes sense from a business perspective”

Examples of factors to consider for this cost benefit analysis are:

The cost of rent for on campus housing

The price of gas spent for commuting

The opportunity cost of giving up the time for commuting to campus

Potential social relationships developed on campus versus friends and family back home

Location, community based events specific to either the location of your home or your university housing

Vehicular ware from commuting throughout the school year

Cost and Benefits of Driving

In 2022 the average cost per gallon of gas in Orange County dollars was $4.892.

Assuming a commuter drives a 2010 Honda Civic, they can be assumed to be getting 30 miles per gallon between the highways and city streets. Examples of commuter travel distances would be 27 miles for Andrew Maldonado and 26 miles for Randall Winvick. As engineering students we are required to be on campus 5 days a week commuting 2 times a day which would result in 270 and 260 miles of driving each week.

For Andrew Maldonado we have 270 miles of commuting each week for 11 weeks a quarter for 3 quarters at the rate of $4.892 per gallon and 30 miles per gallon. The raw cost of this traveling in terms of gas is $1452.924. Similarly for Randall Winvick we have 260 miles of commuting each week for 11 weeks a quarter for 3 quarters at the rate of $4.892 per gallon and 30 miles per gallon. The raw cost of this traveling in terms of gas is $1399.112. In addition to this the cost of wear on a vehicle per mile driven according to AAA insurance is 8.87 cents per mile. For Andrew this would equate to $95.796 and $92.248 for Randall per month, or $957.96 and $922.48 per year.

This adds up to a total cost of $2410.884 for Andrew and $2321.592 for Randall for a year’s worth of commuting while considering both the cost of gas and the cost of wear.

 The opportunity cost of driving in terms of time would be the 90 minutes a day Andrew spends driving where he could be doing other activities instead of driving. For Randall 70 minutes for commuting.

Costs and Benefits of on campus housing

            On average the cost for on or off campus housing for UCI students was $1400 dollars a month. Assuming a student to be living on campus from September-June it would be 10 months worth of rent of $14000. This is about 6 times more than the cost of driving, it comes with the obvious benefit of not having to spend time driving, wear on your car, and the better availability to participate on on campus events as compared to a commuter. However your chance of accidentally committing vehicular manslaughter plummets as you are spending over an hour less driving each day.

Conclusion

Andrew Maldonado’s conclusion:

After learning about the Cost Benefit Analysis principle in this class, immediately the idea of running an analysis of the cost and benefits of commuting to campus versus living on campus occurred to me. This situation pertains to my personal life as I myself have had to make the decision to either commute to UCI or live on campus. I’m extremely glad that this economics project has given me a strong reason to analyze this because  I’m trying to maximize the utility of money while being cautious about how much I am spending. While doing this project I had an idea of the results I expected to find, yet they were still quite surprising to me. I thought that the cost of gas and ware on my vehicle to commute to school would be far greater than what they are. Gas for the entire school year is about one sixth of the cost of rent! This was very surprising to me and made me consider becoming a commuter for my final year of school, although the opportunity cost for spending 90 minutes a day is a hefty price to pay when a 24 hour day already feels incredibly short. Additionally, the mental fatigue that driving can offer, and the decrease in sleep due to having to wake up earlier for morning classes are very significant costs. While considering all of the factors that I have learned while doing this project, I believe that continuing to live on campus is the best option for me.

Randall Winvick’s conclusion:

        In considering all the costs that are involved with driving and commuting versus living near the university, I find it shocking how much more expensive living on campus can be. From our calculations, the price of driving is one sixth the price of living at the university; at this dramatic price difference the added benefit from living on campus would have to be worth a financial value of several thousand dollars at least. Considering the fact that my entire day is spent at school due to my academic work load and that my drive time is only approximately five hours for the commute, I don’t have time to extract the added benefit from living in the university area. Because of this, it makes the most sense for me to make the commute to school.

The all-new Ford Maverick is the smallest and least expensive pickup on the market. Unlike Ford's larger Ranger and F-Series pickups, which have rugged, real-deal truck chassis, the Maverick is mechanically similar to the Ford Escape crossover, so it's less of a work truck and more of a fun truck. Ford offers the Maverick in three trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat. All provide good value, but we recommend the XLT model with the optional FX4 Off-Road package.

The Maverick's standard hybrid powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a small electric motor to produce 191 total system horsepower. Front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission are also standard. It's a responsive combination that does a good job of getting the Maverick up to speed. Power delivery is well-managed, and the engine is generally quiet, except under hard acceleration. An optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 hp is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The hybrid doesn't feel under-powered, but those who crave strong performance or the added capability of all-wheel drive will find the 2.0-liter to be worth the sacrifice in fuel economy. The Maverick's power and acceleration are in line with its rivals, including the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger. All Mavericks handle well, thanks to a car-like ride and responsive steering. Add the FX4 Off-Road package with its range of available drive modes, and you'll be better able to tackle dirt roads and mild trails. The Santa Cruz also delivers a smooth, car-like ride but costs about $4,000 more.

The Maverick can tow up to 4,000 pounds with a maximum payload of 1,500 pounds. That's plenty for most buyers. Its closest rival, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, can tow up to 5,000 pounds with a maximum payload of 1,906 pounds with its optional engine. There is storage everywhere in the Maverick, and its bed is exceptionally versatile though small at just 4.5-feet long. Most small pickups have 5-foot beds, while the Santa Cruz's is just 4 feet long.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the 2022 Ford Maverick with the 2.0-liter engine will return 26 mpg in combined city and highway driving with front-wheel drive, or 25 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. Those numbers beat the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger.

Fuel economy figures for the hybrid haven't been finalized, but Ford aims for an EPA-estimated 37 mpg combined. The Maverick would not only be the most fuel-efficient small pickup in the United States by a large margin, but it would also rival the fuel efficiency of small compact cars such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

The new Subaru Impreza hatch premiered in LA last November has made in Japanese debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon – replete with STI performance parts for a sporty edge. While hardly a return to the days of the full-on WRX and STI hatchbacks, this version does at least add some performance flavour. Offical details are sparse, with Subaru’s statements limited to a confirmation that the STI parts pictured are “under development and customised to sportier specifications”. There are some new black alloy wheels, side skitrs, a branded roof spoiler, a glossy front bumper lip, and a very Honda Civic-style centre-mounted dual-pipe exhaust. It’s unclear what suspension and performance upgrades there are, if any. The Japanese-market model pictured uses a Boxer hybrid, however there’s another slightly punchier performance option in the US: a 136kW and 241Nm 2.5-litre flat-four with full-time AWD, torque-vectoring, and a CVT with eight preset gear ratios and paddle shifters. Apparently the new version Subaru Global Platform underpinning the new Impreza is 10 per cent more torsionally rigid, and includes a full inner frame. With 3.4 times more structural adhesive than before, the Impreza is claimed to be lighter than before too. Subaru Australia still has not confirmed when the new Impreza will come here, simply stating: “Impreza has been part of the Subaru family for 30 years, and we look forward to sharing more details for the Australian market in due course”. As to the future of STI parts in Australia, the company is keen to capitalise as much as it can. As announced last March there won’t be a new Subaru WRX STI, but the Subaru Tecnica International brand isn’t dead. The company’s local arm detailed various styling packages for the WRX sedan and Sportswagon (Levorg) last October, and the company has hinted at an electric STI future. “As the automotive marketplace continues to move towards electrification, Subaru is focused on how our future sports and performance cars should evolve to meet the needs of the changing marketplace,” it said in 2022. “We acknowledge the long love affair Australians have had with the WRX STI, and the STI brand,” Subaru Australia managing director Blair Read later told local media. “The STI engineers and that team, that did all these great things, haven’t packed up and gone home. They’re still there. “Part of that change in direction with the STI brand is how it can play a role not just in one model variant, but across all the product.
