Totally an impulse buy especially since I have 2 or 3 more books from the library that I still have because of #covid19 but what can I say? As a #Bonehead I can’t resist #TemperanceBrennan books even though the #DrBrennan in the books is different in some ways from #Bones on tv. I loved the progress in Tempe & Ryan’s relationship. #Book #16 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #TheBestOfMe by @nicholassparks There was a time in my life when I basically inhaled #NicholasSparks #books At one point I had read every single one of his books that had been published at that time.!But life happened. Life got hard, and I made the conscious decision to stop reading books that make me cry. I’ve been hitting up the #library every month since December and checking out a handful of books at a time and kept running into books that inevitable made me cry even though I didn’t expect them to. Case in point: Khloe Kardashian’s book. I completely forgot her dad died of cancer 🤦‍♀️ IDK if I was incredibly hopeful or just plain stupid for thinking I was strong enough to read a Nicholas Sparks book again after all this years. Yes, I cried at the end. But I’ve read over a dozen Nicholas Sparks books to know his writing style and suspect ways he’d make me cry and I was right. But I still cried at the end even if it wasn’t a surprising ending. Not sure if I’m gonna be rushing to read another Nicholas Sparks book this year. TBH I’m probably reading a book about vaginas next. Interesting read especially given the political climate we’re in right now. The author has ties to San Diego. #Lategram #Book 20 in the #20booksin2020 challenge is Troubling #Dominance in Sport: Deconstructing Curling Culture(s) through Narrative Inquiry by @rjn.darksports Up until a few weeks ago I had no idea such a study existed. Thanks to @goldlinecurling for introducing me to Dr. Richard Norman through their #sharethemic IG sessions. I think it’s super important, especially in light of the #BlackLivesMatter movement that people confront #racism head on. We can all learn to grow as people. It’s been frustrating that many in the curling community have reacted w/ “curling is so welcoming” & “there is no race on the ice, just the human race” when clearly there’s so much work to be done in terms of #diversity and #inclusion . . I highly encourage all curling nerds and curlers to read Dr. Norman’s dissertation. The #covid19 #quarantine means no group exercise classes, dance rehearsals, or curling league, and the technical difficulties I was experiencing w/ the #virtualbroomstacking just made me want to return to Michelle’s book so I was determined to read and finish. I admit, I cried at the end of the chapter where #MichelleObama talked about her father’s passing. Death is still a sore subject for me even if my dad has been gone 5 years. Reading the book made me nostalgic for the 8 years the Obamas were in the White House. I feel like we live in the Twilight Zone now. #Book 12 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #TheWarOnNormalPeople The Truth About America’s Disappearing Jobs And Why #UniversalBasicIncome Is Our Future by @andrewyang2020 Similar to Elizabeth Warren’s book, this was well-researched w/ a bunch of citations in the notes section. It was a little scary reading about all the ways automation is affecting job loss and the economy, it’s something I never really thought about before. I liked the idea of introducing #VAT setting a $5 billion endowment max or lose your nonprofit status for large universities and scrapping the “best colleges” rankings that rely heavily on financial strength and alumni giving. #Book 9 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #StrongLooksBetterNaked by @khloekardashian I thought #reading this book would be a break and get me away from death and sadness, but I completely forgot that #KhloeKardashian ‘s dad died of cancer. I didn’t expect to cry but parts where Khloe would talk about her dad as well as how she felt when her stepdad Bruce Jenner transitioned to Caitlyn got to me. I guess I have daddy issues - the main one being I no longer have one. I still have to go to the cemetery and bring him the Valentine’s Day flowers I got him. As someone who’s struggled w/ weight issues all my life, the book felt really familiar to me, like eating your feelings or eating out of habit. I liked how Khloe was pushing the idea of small incremental changes that lead to lasting positive results. If something isn’t sustainable, it won’t work. #book 8 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #FullDisclosure by @thestormydaniels I enjoyed #reading this #book It’s just what I needed after all the death & cancer stuff from the last two books I read. It was interesting to hear about what happened before and after the #Toadstool who needed a weed whacker entered #StormyDaniels ‘ life. One of the things I learned about Stormy from reading her book was that she’s an #animallover Horses were a big part of her life & in seeing her IG now, they still are, and it seems she has passed on this love to her daughter, who I hope growths up relatively unscathed given all the hoopla that has surrounded her family so far. It’s sad that she had to be homeschooled for safety reasons. I confess, it was hella triggering because years later, watching my dad die of #cancer remains the most difficult and painful thing I’ve gone through in life, and something I’m still struggling to deal with. I finished the book awhile ago tonight and I am still crying as I type this post, like full on #uglycry too. How fitting that I’m posting this on #WorldCancerDay You bet your ass I am NOT reading Joe Biden’s book about the #death of his son next. Chelsea Handler’s book was a lot about death too and I don’t think I can handle another one so soon. #book 6 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #Life Will Be the #Death of Me...and you too! by @chelseahandler I loved the parts about Chelsea's dogs - Chunk, Tammy, Bert, and Bernice. I remember Chunk and how active he used to be on Twitter. The book takes you through Chelsea's sessions w/ Dan and talks a lot about the deaths of Chelsea's brother Chet and how that has affected he over the years. Chelsea also talks about the deaths of her parents. I think the part about her dad's death towards the end really got to me because years later, I still mourn my dad's #death I'm now curious about enneagrams and what number I may be...I think I'm sadness at my core. #Book 4 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #NaturallyTan by @tanfrance of @queereye I’m surprised it took me longer than I anticipated to read this book given that #memoirs / #biographies especially #popculture ones tend to be easy and fast reads for me, but in the midst of Tan’s witty chapters, PSAs, and #fashion #advice are serious stuff that hit me harder than I thought they would. The stuff about representation, 9/11, diversity, and certain cultures’ obsession about being fair (Filipinos know the whitening cream industry quite well too) all resonated with me.
