Rain, loudest wind, a thick veil of dark clouds, greenery, sunbathes, walking barefoot on the beach, outings, some brilliant sunrises and sunsets, the calm blue dense clouds, flowers, trees, stars in the open sky, new life, new strength, new hope. July has treated me well and there's still time before it's time to say goodbye. I'm going to enjoy these magical days and bright nights to their fullest. There's so much I want to do and experience.🍀

For a few days now my dreams feature chocolate cigarettes. Like proper cigarette you can smoke and you get addicted to, but made of chocolate. It's Milka chocolate too. No idea why the fuck.

PROLOGUE: last wish
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— SUMMARY: as childe stands on death's door, he makes one final wish that allows him to roam the earth for a little while longer.
— GENRE: angst
— WARNINGS: descriptions of blood, injury, and death (i love you ajax T-T)
— NOTE: AAAA prologue for my first series is out <33 haven’t written in a while so i am a bit rusty but this definitely gave me some practice!! i promise this isn’t as angsty as it sounds, the next chapters are much more fluffy i promise you all </33. but anyways, i hope you all enjoy this!! have an amazing day you wonderful people ^^
Tumblr media
childe stumbles across the snowy terrain, ragged breaths escaping him as puffs of white hair in the cruelly cold weather. usually, he never had a problem with such extreme weather. in fact, he often found comfort and familiarity in the chilly bite of the wind and the white snow that decorates every inch of land.
but when he was trying to suppress more blood from seeping out of his fresh wound, it wasn’t the most comforting thing in the world.
as his legs give up on him, body collapsing against a tree, the only comfort he wishes he had at that moment was the warmth of your arms. he wishes the warmth of his overwhelming amount of blood wasn’t the only thing keeping him from the cold.
(more utc!)
his hand shakes uncharacteristically as he desperately attempts to stop the bleeding, tears blurring his vision due to the ungodly waves of pain that crashed over his body.
he refuses to die this way. he cannot accept that he passes surrounded by pain instead of your presence.
he'd give anything not to succumb to death at this moment. but, given the fact he could barely lift a finger, he knows his time is almost up.
a breathless and pained chuckle escapes his bloodied lips, tears finally cascading down his pale cheeks at the predicament he was in.
he was in an indescribable amount of physical pain, but it also hurt him thinking about leaving you so suddenly. he didn't even want to imagine how devastated and broken you'd be at the news. he had always hated being the reason for your sadness after all.
for once, the mighty eleventh harbinger could not do anything about the situation. compared to the formidable fighter he was just mere moments before this, he was helpless. he was utterly weak. he was dying.
but before death could claim him and take him from his suffering, he musters every last fibre of strength he has in his body to shakily pull out a crumpled letter. a letter that would serve as his last remembrance of you before his eyes closed for eternity.
though he could barely make out the letters through his tears and the black holes that started to form in his vision, he had memorized the letter by heart. he knew it enough to recall how he could practically hear your overjoyed voice through the words scribbled on the page, how relieved you sounded that he would be by your side in a few days time.
he was beginning to get too weak to even hold up the paper and the only things he felt as his eyes began to shut was regret and guilt. he hoped you'd be okay after finding out what happened to him.
oh, how hopelessly he wished he could bid you one last goodbye and give you one last kiss.
he would've given anything to miraculously pick himself back up and live one day closer to seeing you again. but the world is harsh and apparently, nothing he could offer would be enough.
so with nothing left to stop his impending doom, he closes his eyes and lets darkness surround him.
however, as quickly as he had lost his consciousness, he regained it. all the pain is gone and it's as if the strength has been restored back to his body.
childe does not know what he's supposed to feel after he dies, but he can tell that this was definitely not it.
to his own surprise, he's able to open his eyes and scan his surroundings, making sure that he wasn't in some odd afterworld. he's even more shocked when he's able to move normally, as if there was never a gaping wound on his body to begin with.
carefully, he stands from his spot beneath the tree. his eyes nearly bulge out of its sockets when he sees his own body still there, all bloody and bruised from the troublesome battle he fought during his mission.
"hello?" childe calls out wearily, whipping his head around in all directions in hopes to find anyone, something, anything to explain to him what was going on.
when he sees and hears nothing, he turns back to his body one last time, chewing on his bottom lip in deep thought .
he was sure he had passed, but unsure of what to do now that he was brought back. had he failed to do something? was he supposed to look for someone who could help him? perhaps he was supposed to complete his failed mission?
as he's recalling what he could have done to warrant himself a second chance at roaming the earth, his eyes widen at a sudden realization.
his last wish. it was to say his last goodbye to you wasn't it? that was the only thing he begged for in his last moments and maybe some god out there was kind enough to give into gim.
so, without a moment's haste, he sets off, sprinting across the snowy grounds of snezhnaya as fast as he can, determined to see you one last time before whoever gave him this second chance decides to change their mind and take him from you again.

The CFPB is genuinely making America better, and they're going HARD
Tumblr media
On June 20, I'm keynoting the LOCUS AWARDS in OAKLAND.
Tumblr media
Let's take a sec here and notice something genuinely great happening in the US government: the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau's stunning, unbroken streak of major, muscular victories over the forces of corporate corruption, with the backing of the Supreme Court (yes, that Supreme Court), and which is only speeding up!
A little background. The CFPB was created in 2010. It was Elizabeth Warren's brainchild, an institution that was supposed to regulate finance from the perspective of the American public, not the American finance sector. Rather than fighting to "stabilize" the financial sector (the mission that led to Obama taking his advisor Timothy Geithner's advice to permit the foreclosure crisis to continue in order to "foam the runways" for the banks), the Bureau would fight to defend us from bankers.
The CFPB got off to a rocky start, with challenges to the unique system of long-term leadership appointments meant to depoliticize the office, as well as the sudden resignation of its inaugural boss, who broke his promise to see his term through in order to launch an unsuccessful bid for political office.
But after the 2020 election, the Bureau came into its own, when Biden poached Rohit Chopra from the FTC and put him in charge. Chopra went on a tear, taking on landlords who violated the covid eviction moratorium:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/20/euthanize-rentier-enablers/#cfpb
Then banning payday lenders' scummiest tactics:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/29/planned-obsolescence/#academic-fraud
Then striking at one of fintech's most predatory grifts, the "earned wage access" hustle:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/01/usury/#tech-exceptionalism
Then closing the loophole that let credit reporting bureaus (like Equifax, who doxed every single American in a spectacular 2019 breach) avoid regulation by creating data brokerage divisions and claiming they weren't part of the regulated activity of credit reporting:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/16/the-second-best-time-is-now/#the-point-of-a-system-is-what-it-does
Chopra went on to promise to ban data-brokers altogether:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/13/goulash/#material-misstatement
Then he banned comparison shopping sites where you go to find the best bank accounts and credit cards from accepting bribes and putting more expensive options at the top of the list. Instead, he's requiring banks to send the CFPB regular, accurate lists of all their charges, and standing up a federal operated comparison shopping site that gives only accurate and honest rankings. Finally, he's made an interoperability rule requiring banks to let you transfer to another institution with one click, just like you change phone carriers. That means you can search an honest site to find the best deal on your banking, and then, with a single click, transfer your accounts, your account history, your payees, and all your other banking data to that new bank:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/21/let-my-dollars-go/#personal-financial-data-rights
Somewhere in there, big business got scared. They cooked up a legal theory declaring the CFPB's funding mechanism to be unconstitutional and got the case fast-tracked to the Supreme Court, in a bid to put Chopra and the CFPB permanently out of business. Instead, the Supremes – these Supremes! – upheld the CFPB's funding mechanism in a 7-2 ruling:
https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/05/supreme-court-lets-cfpb-funding-stand/
That ruling was a starter pistol for Chopra and the Bureau. Maybe it seemed like they were taking big swings before, but it turns out all that was just a warmup. Last week on The American Prospect, Robert Kuttner rounded up all the stuff the Bureau is kicking off:
https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2024-06-07-window-on-corporate-deceptions/
First: regulating Buy Now, Pay Later companies (think: Klarna) as credit-card companies, with all the requirements for disclosure and interest rate caps dictated by the Truth In Lending Act:
https://www.skadden.com/insights/publications/2024/06/cfpb-applies-credit-card-rules
Next: creating a registry of habitual corporate criminals. This rogues gallery will make it harder for other agencies – like the DOJ – and state Attorneys General to offer bullshit "delayed prosecution agreements" to companies that compulsively rip us off:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-creates-registry-to-detect-corporate-repeat-offenders/
Then there's the rule against "fine print deception" – which is when the fine print in a contract lies to you about your rights, like when a mortgage lender forces you waive a right you can't actually waive, or car lenders that make you waive your bankruptcy rights, which, again, you can't waive:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/about-us/newsroom/cfpb-warns-against-deception-in-contract-fine-print/
As Kuttner writes, the common thread running through all these orders is that they ban deceptive practices – they make it illegal for companies to steal from us by lying to us. Especially in these dying days of class action suits – rapidly becoming obsolete thanks to "mandatory arbitration waivers" that make you sign away your right to join a class action – agencies like the CFPB are our only hope of punishing companies that lie to us to steal from us.
There's a lot of bad stuff going on in the world right now, and much of it – including an active genocide – is coming from the Biden White House.
But there are people in the Biden Administration who care about the American people and who are effective and committed fighters who have our back. What's more, they're winning. That doesn't make all the bad news go away, but sometimes it feels good to take a moment and take the W.
