The Many Voices of Brian Slade
I really appreciate that Brian's voice is done by multiple artists throughout the film. Todd Haynes said that it works because of the versatility of the music and of Brian as an artist, echoing the versatility of Bowie himself: "all you have to do is listen to someone like David Bowie over a span of four years and you hear the change in voice and style according to what's required by the different songs".
In my opinion, Brian having multiple voices works for another reason: it adds to the enigma that is Brian Slade. How do you analyze the message of an artist that doesn't have one true voice? How can you pin down someone who is elusive and constantly redefining themselves? We already know Brian has a knack for taking on different personas; the vocal fragmentation adds one more layer of disguise. Sultry and world-weary, or thin-voiced and innocent, or bombastic and crowd-pleasing - he can make himself into whatever the moment calls for, without ever revealing who he truly is.
Tumblr media
To the best of my knowledge (and with some help from Wikipedia), below is the breakdown of vocal performances on Brian's songs. I'm not going to try to analyze why certain singers ended up with certain songs (because I do think some of it was probably a logistical thing, and also because my brain can't stretch that far right now), but I would love to hear others' thoughts/theories on it! Also if I missed any songs or misattributed the vocals, please let me know.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers (the actor):
Sebastian
Ballad of Maxwell Demon
Baby's on Fire
Tumbling Down
Thom Yorke (of Radiohead):
2HB
Ladytron
Bitter-sweet
Craig Benjamin Wedren (of Shudder to Think):
Hot One
Grant-Lee Phillips (of Grant Lee Buffalo):
The Whole Shebang
Nathan Larson (of Shudder to Think):
People Rockin' People (couldn't find a link, but it's the Tommy Stone song)
Callum Hamilton (the Young Brian actor)
Tutti Frutti (again, no link, but it's Young Brian covering Little Richard)

13, 29, and 37 for the music asks please!
13: Favourite lyric?
oh thats so tough. fuck. um the first one that came to mind was from 2HB by Roxy Music "your death could not kill our love for you"
edit: how did i not think of Afterglow by Genesis. "i would search everywhere just to hear your call / and walk upon stranger roads than this one in a world i used to know before" it reminds me of my rabbit that passed away 5 years ago :((
29: First song that pops into your head, go!
I Love to Boogie - T. Rex i havent listened to that song in years idk why
37: Any band you thought you wouldn’t like, but did once you gave it a chance?
ummmm maybe Oingo Boingo? im fairly certain it was shelby who got me into them, usually we dont like the same music but they're just so !!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Bryan Ferry—one of my musical heroes as a vocalist, singer-songwriter, style visionary, and frontman/co-founder of Roxy Music.
Ferry is like a man stepping out of a classic film, evincing James Bond, Marlon Brando, and Humphrey Bogart (RM tributed Bogart with “2HB”). Musically, Ferry is influenced by American soul singers, The Beatles, Gershwin-esque pop standards, and European genres (think Balkan-Mediterranean folk, Marlene Deitrich, French chanson, and opera). He is also a chief interpreter of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Lou Reed; Ferry’s harmonica playing handily mimics Lennon’s early 60s Merseybeat sound. With a 3 & 1/2 octave range, Ferry’s vocal technique involves a groomed palate, tight vibrato, volatile articulation, and the “talking blues” speak-singing cultivated by Dylan and Reed. Like Billie Holiday, Ferry sometimes sings a tad sharp and off the beat. His style is an acquired taste for some, as he challenges the conventions of male pop/rock singing. One critic called him “Dean Martin for psychotics; Frank Sinatra on LSD.”
Singer peter chauncey and I covered Roxy Music’s "Mother of Pearl.” Ferry’s lyrics take the dead end of 'party love' and measures it against the durability of pure love, alluding to Boticelli's ‘Birth of Venus’ painting, The Bible, and Frederic Neitzsche. The original “MOP” was a two-tiered rock operetta, opening with a sinister shindig, like a Sam Cooke party crashed by speed freak bikers. The party-groove abruptly cuts to a pensive, down-tempo Velvet Underground-style chord meditation while celebrating the power of eternal love with a fascinating parade of lyrical images. Madame X, completed!
Tumblr media
I'll be honest. This was less completion and more a combination of me being exhausted, the paper physically buckling in places, and me discovering that there is an upper limit to how many layers of graphite you can layer over one another.
If I could go back and do this over, this is what I'd change:
Get a black and white image of the painting to work from in advance, rather than working from the coloured painting directly.
Figure out how to evenly lay colour over a large area without the unsightly white patches. That's still a problem without a solution, but I'll find something.
Instead of starting with light 2HB layers and deepening them over time, start with the correct intensity graphite pencil. Graphite pencils should be treated like watercolours, and starting with a light pink shade and adding slightly darker pinks over time will not give you maroon in the end, that's just not how colour works. Same principle with graphite pencils.
Good thing is, I will be able to change all this in my next painting, where I will absolutely bastardize the artist's vision by dressing this lady in Ebony Darkness Demen'tia Raven Way's fashions. Although I might change my outfit idea because I have just discovered Victorian Gothic fashion, and I am In Love. Also up next (maybe tomorrow) is a megapost about Raja Ravi Varma and why the entire Indian Subcontinent should be stanning him, which will probably hit a thousand words at this rate.
Expect more batshittery anon,
Rama.

Not an album but the vg soundtrack
actually!! a decent amount of the songs were compiled and released in album form, and it’s available on CD and vinyl, the latter of which i have. it’s blue and orange and hooo i love it
in terms of songs in the film overall though i think i’ll go with that bc it does give me more freedom to pick film exclusive tracks or versions of tracks.
3. the film version of bitter sweet by roxy music where the flaming creatures have a part. LOVE those fuckers. also i sing along to brian slade’s part every time i watch the movie
2. GIMME DANGER CURT WILD. IDK WHY THIS ISN’T ON THE OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK BUT WE WERE FUCKING ROBBED, EWAN IS SINGING HIS HEART OUT AND CURT IS IN SO MUCH PAIN,,,,,
1. jack fairy’s version of 2hb. i love them with all my heart and this song’s overall place and purpose in the film is so fucking good. i like that jack bookends the story and their performance is Great even though ik it’s not actually micko singing

3 & 28 for the music ask? 😊
Thank you Jane bestie 💛💛💛
3. a song you really like by an artist you otherwise don’t listen to very much (whether that’s because you usually don’t like their music, or just because you haven’t listened to the rest yet)
Hmmm I think I have to say When I’m With You by Sparks, I do listen to quite a few of their songs but not regularly and this one is the only one that is included in literally all of my playlists
28. name a song (or a few songs) that would need to be included in a movie about your life
Firstly I have to say This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) by Talking Heads. It’s so beautiful and I love the lyrics and “never for money, always for love” is my life’s mantra.
Then I’d say 2HB by Roxy Music because it is also the most beautiful song ever and it always puts me in a very specific mood that I adore.
Also Dance Yrself Clean by LCD Soundsystem because whenever I’m going through it I listen to it and I dance around to it at 3am nearly every day so it’s very special to me.
I have to include Born to Run by my dearest Bruce Springsteen because he literally wrote that song about me and I love him for it.
And finally Into My Arms by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds because it’s the perfect love song and I already decided I’m dancing to it at my wedding, I adore Nick Cave.

1, 10, 11, 13, 23 !
getting to this very late but i love making playlists so please have some more... this is SO long wow, apologies...
1. what’s on your oldest playlist?
my oldest playlists are long gone from my current computer but here are five songs from a playlist for a story that i wrote in college... probably 2011. it was about a bunch of disturbed teens with vague supernatural powers who are townies on this summer vacation island in maine and one ends up killing their friend’s summer girlfriend out of sexual jealousy
black lips - “lock and key”
cave singers - “black leaf”
deerhunter - “lake somerset” (this whole thing was my attempt to write a story with the vibe of this song)
menomena - “oh pretty boy...” (supremely underrated band. both my parents at separate times overheard me listening to this and thought they were hearing strange voices in the house)
the sandwitches - “sirens and bells”
10. 5 songs for being in love and pining
spiritualized - “i think i’m in love” chemical brothers vocal remix
adorable - “cut #2″ (supremely underrated band)
echo and the bunnymen - “lips like sugar”
sleater-kinney - “oh!”
blur - “beachcoma” ... the point at which you looked at me has always been part of my brain and now my mind is in a whirl and it seems i am not the same, my dear and special friend, there’s never a point at which we end...
11. top 5 songs from a musical or movie
the entire velvet goldmine soundtrack especially:
shudder to think - “the ballad of maxwell demon”
shudder to think - “hot one”
the venus in furs - “2hb” (roxy music cover)
and these ones from i’m not there:
malkmus singing “ballad of a thin man” ... honestly i like this better than the dylan original
jim james and calexico - “goin to acapulco”
13. 5 songs that evoke memories
ought - “men for miles”... i LOVE this band’s first album and the singles from this one started coming out while i was backpacking across canada in summer 2015. i remember listening to this on the train back from halifax to quebec city at dusk through all these strange towns. and the lyric “who would want to live here / there’s fourteen clocks in half as many rooms”
fountain - “venetian unfolding” - lying on my back in volunteer park staring at the sky being overwhelmed with happiness when i had finished editing desperado
women - “narrow with the hall” - i remember lying on the couch at my mom’s old apartment listening to this and crying in the middle of the night and then my brother came home stoned and started singing pavement to me which cheered me up
preoccupations - “death” - my friend bianca and i got a leak of this album on my 24th birthday in november 2014 while i was visiting her in toronto for this noise festival. i remember listening to it for the first time with her and her boyfriend in their old apartment and then listening to it on the greyhound on the way to the buffalo airport and the gray endlessness. this is one of my favorite songs ever. i love that it is about the general fact of death as well as one specific person’s death at the same time and with equal power.
guerilla toss - “trash bed” - seeing them for the first time live with clara at sxsw in 2014 and our minds being so totally blown that we then followed them around and saw them several more times.
23. 5 friends and the songs you associate them with
clara - “guarded by monkeys” by cracker, also “mother of christ” by alice donut which we heard on KEXP in the middle of the night around christmas and which expanded our brains... so many songs with clara... also the entire sleater-kinney discography
bianca - “octet” by deerhunter
cam - “eyesore” by women and “television man” by naomi punk, driving on I-5 and this coming on the radio (also KEXP!) and both of us gasping loudly and reaching for the volume to crank it at the same time
paige - “800db cloud” by 100 gecs... she was driving me to work from our climbing gym at like 8:30am while blasting this in her car, the first time i heard them and it was game changing
preeta - just the nicki minaj verse from “monster”

Hello hello wonderful AA members! Back again with another character from the Fate anime series. This time my husbando Lancer from the Fate/Stay Night honestly since he appeared in the series i had a instant crush  yes love at first sight  . So how i couldn't draw this wonderful smexy men like how?
· · • • • ✤ • • • · ·
Lancer is a servant (i wish he was my servant) unfortunately he doesn't have a good end and doesn't appear a lot in the series but still he is savage funny strong and hot (what else can you ask about a man?). Another thing i really liked about him is that he is a man of his word even if have to sacrifice himself he will keep his promises no matter what. That's why he became my anime husbando because of his great personality and his appearance.

Aquarelle ppaper A4
Mechanical pencil 2HB 0.5
Black brush pen
Markers (same i used for my other drawings)
White pencil
Pencil color's
Step 1
As always do is the sketching by composing the character in the middle of the paper and then i start drawing the character. I started firstly drawing the torso and i changed the position of the left arm and after that i did start drawing the shoulders and the face after that i started working with the upper part of the hair. I worked a bit with the outfit.
Step 2
After that i started working with the outfit i which i got the idea from the reference picture. Firstly i started working with the vest and after that shirts sleeves, to jump on working with the facial details like eye's, mouth and nose, for the hair i wanted to do the version of the hairstyle he had on Fate/stay night but then i thought going with the version in Fate/Grand order kinda a mix of both versions.
Step 3
Forgot to mention the pencils i used was a basic pencil hb for the sketching and for the details i used 0.5 mechanical pencil. After finishing drawing the character and working with last details i did line up the drawing with a 0.7 black pen for the large area's then a 0.3 for the details like hands the face and hair for eye's nose and mouth i used the 0.1 black pen.
Step 4
Coloring part a basic blue pencil color as a first layer for the hair then i did blend it with a sky blue color as second layer, and as last layer i used a dark blue marker and the 46 blue marker to get the shadings was needed.
Step 5
In the end i used the dark blue color pencil to make the shadings darker, for the eye's i used a red gel pen. As per the skin tone i did use as first layer a basic skin color pencil and went over blending it with the 97 marker to get a darker tone and for the part of the shadings i used the 107 marker.
Step 6
Jumping on coloring the outfit by starting with the vest by using a black marker but since the marker left a lot of blank parts i did use another layer by using a normal black color pencil and blended together. For the shirt and pants as first layer i used the white marker and then i went with black gel pen and went again over with white marker to get the grey shadings. And then as final step i did work with hair giving the highlights by using a white gel pen and same white gel pen i used for the white highlights on the vest also for the buttons.
Final look
Proof:
My man omg isn't he hot?  Ok ok i should stop simping in this blog damn i blame him for being so handsome. Anyways haha besides jokes was really a great fun drawing him since he is my favorite one from the Fate series. Honestly will be few of my favorite characters from the Fate series that i will bring soon so stay tuned. For now i hope you enjoyed reading and watching this one so for now bye bye.
So that's all i hope y'all enjoy the blog i wish you good day/afternoon/night

Song asks! 6, 14, 15, 19, and 20!
1. a song that reminds you of your favorite book
okay, so it’s a play and not a book, but angels in america will always be #1 in my heart of hearts. every time i hear “moon river” (esp. the henry mancini version since it’s in the miniseries), i think of prior and louis dancing and the way louis says “just spectral” and the way louis just vanishes from his arms and he collapses without the support and how it’s representative of their general relationship and the way that prior’s able to dance for just a second despite the pain in his leg and i 🥺😭. anyway, i could v much be a “in this essay i will” person, but i’ll stop there.
14. the last cd/album you bought
i pay for spotify premium (i know they have their problems, i’m sorry), so i buy less often than i used to, but i got boygenius’s self-titled ep on vinyl for my partner.
15. a song to listen to on rainy days
“crackagen” by anohni and “vienna” by billy joel.
19. your favorite song from a movie
hmm, if we’re talking about cues, “tiny dancer” by elton john in almost famous is iconic. and "2hb" (it’s a cover) in velvet goldmine also just gets you right in the moment. also, it’s a tv show, but the americans has the best music cues of any show i’ve watched, especially “only you” by yaz, “slice of life” by bauhaus, and “with or without you” by u2.
20. favorite song from a musical
can i do top few in no particular order?
hedwig and the inch: tie between “wicked little town (reprise)” and “origin of love”
spring awakening: tie between “bitch of living” and “the bitch of living”
hadestown: “wait for me” (2017 off-broadway version)
natasha, pierre & the great comet of 1812: “prologue”
someone else asked me this, so i’m gonna do a round two because there are so many more. sorry i’m a cheater, but also not sorry. 😬
